SP 111: Public Speaking Fall 2010 TESTIMONIAL SPEECH ASSIGNMENT Speech Type: Manuscript (meaning you may read the speech) Duration: 3-5 minutes General Purpose: To inform Specific Purpose: To tell a story about a specific moment in time that will help your audience relate to you by identifying with your experience. Point Value: 80 points (10 points will be deducted if the speech exceeds or falls below the time allotted by more than 15 seconds). STEP ONE: Choose a Theme 1. Call of the Wild: Tale of an extreme adventure. 2. Now or Never: Failure is not an option. 3. Circle of Life: Every ending is a new beginning. 4. Live & Learn: Experiments gone awry. 5. Nuclear Meltdown: Relationship woes. 6. Tales of the Crypt: Moments that gave you great fear. 7. Did I Do That?: Embarrassing moments ensuing in hilarity. STEP TWO: Brainstorm Topics Think of various life experiences that fit within this theme. Don’t limit yourself—write down all your ideas! You can always cross them out or erase them, but give yourself a healthy list of options. STEP THREE: Create an Outline Recall your story and outline your speech. Use a working outline but make sure to address the following components of the outline: I. Introduction A. Gain Attention B. Relate to Audience C. Thesis Statement II. Body A. Relay the Events of the Story STEP FOUR: Draft the Speech Write your speech using the outline as a guide. Rehearse your speech and make sure it flows and is easy to understand. Use vocal variety and eliminate any redundancies within your speech. Make sure it’s within the specified time requirements!
