    Lesson lBUILDING UP ONE ANOTHER

    LOVE ONE ANOTHER

    I Thessalonians 3:12; 4:9

Paul frequently uses the analogy of the human body to illustrate how the church is tofunction. See I Corinthians 12:14-27. For further reference study Romans 12 and Ephesians 4.

What is Paul saying here:A. No individual Christian can function effectively by himself. Just as there are

many parts of one body in the physical makeup of human beings, so the body ofChrist is made up of many members. And each member is important. Nomember of Christ's body can say, I don't need you. We all need each other.

    B. No member of Christ's body should feel he is more important than another. SeeRomans 12:3.

    C. We should strive to create unity in the body of Christ. Study I Corinthians 12:12.

The most significant key to unity and effective body function is love. We are to "love

one another." Love is the more excellent way. See I Corinthians 12:31; 13:13.The exhortation to "love one another" appears more frequently than all others. Of

the 58 references to what we are to do for one another as fellow believers, 11 times we are toldto love one another. If you add Christ's direct Commands to love one another, which arerecorded in John's Gospel, the total comes to 16 in the New Testament.

Christians are to be just as devoted to each other as are the individual members of aclose-knit family unit. For we are a unique family unit. We are "blood brothers." ReadEphesians 1:7. We are family.

Consider the following practical steps for developing loving family relationships in thechurch.I. DONT ATTACK YOUR CHURCH.

If you attack your spouse, or children not honoring their parents you only destroy yourown home. Have you heard, dont bite the hand that feeds you and if you do, you won't befed.

When a church attacks their pastor or its members you only destroy your own church. Sotake seriously what the Bible says about brotherly love.

II. EVALUATE YOUR ATTITUDES AND ACTIONS TOWARD OTHER

    MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH.

Some Christians find it difficult to identify with other believers at the "feeling" level.Consider the following reasons:

    A. You may fear rejection. Some individuals have been so deeply hurt by othersthey are afraid to express their feelings.

    B. You may have had a family background where displays of love were uncommon. It will take time, prayer and association with Christians whom you can trust toreverse such behavioral patterns.

    C. You may spend too much time thinking of yourself. A selfish, self-centeredperson is never happy. Happiness results from reaching out in love to others.

III. EXPRESS LOVE IN A TANGIBLE WAY.

    A. The giving of a gift.B. A note or word of appreciation to someone who has helped you.

    C. An invitation to dinner.D. Leading a soul to Christ.E. Volunteering for a church responsibility.

All of the foregoing may be summed up in the words of Christ in John 13:34, 35.

    Answer the following questions:

    1. Reading the references, what is Paul saying?a.b.

    c.

    2. What is the one most important key for a church to have in order to be effective andhave unity?

    3. If we don't take seriously what the Bible says about love what will happen in ourhomes and churches?

    Lesson 2BUILDING UP ONE ANOTHER

BE OF THE SAME MIND WITH ONE ANOTHER

    Romans 15:5-6 & James 1:8

One of Satan's most effective strategies is to destroy unity among Christians. Heis the author of confusion, false doctrine, and church splits.

We are clearly taught in the Bible that Satan's malicious strategy can be defeated. It isthe power of one-mindedness in those who make up the body -- the local church.

    I. CHRIST PRAYED FOR UNITY.

In Christ's prayer to the Father in John 17, the central theme is that His disciples mightexperience unity and oneness. Read John 17:9-11. Later Jesus amplified this same request. SeeJohn 17:20-23.

Jesus Christ was God in the flesh. He was and is one with the Father. And oneness inthe church in a marvelous way reveals to non-Christians that Christ was indeed God. If Satancan destroy our unity, he has destroyed the most powerful means of communication to lost men

that Jesus Christ was God.Wars and lack of harmony among mankind have been the norm -- the standard for

human behavior. And when lost people see true unity and true oneness, their hearts cry out to bea part of that kind of love.

Jesus knew in advance that Satan's tactic would be to destroy unity in the church. Thushe prayed that God would protect believers from the evil one. See John 17:15.

II. THE JERUSALEM CHURCH SET A DYNAMIC EXAMPLE OF UNITY.

The unity in the Jerusalem church was profound. Read Acts 2:46 & Acts 4:32.This does not mean that there were no problems, that Satan did not try to destroy their

    unity. Read Acts 5:1-11 & Acts 6:1-4.

It is important that we do not miss the results of the unity of the Jerusalem church.Study Acts 2:47; Acts 4:32-33 & Acts 6:7. We see here a direct correlation between unity inthe body of Christ and the results of that unity in the lives of non-Christians.

III. ONENESS OF MIND WAS PAUL'S GREAT CONCERN.

    A. Romans 12:16.B. Romans 14:19.C. Romans 15:5-6.D. Ephesians 4:2-3E. Philippians 1:27.

Though many different personalities are part of any given local church, they can bedrawn together as one heart and soul. And where there is unity, there will be a dynamic witnessfor Jesus Christ.

    Lesson 3BUILDING UP ONE ANOTHER

    ADMONISH ONE ANOTHER

    Romans 15:14 & Colossians 3:12-16

The church is like a family unit. Sometimes it is necessary for a parent to admonish achild, or for a sister to admonish a brother. It is equally true in a church. Although it is not easyto do this, in the end it usually turns out to be a spiritually rewarding task. Open rebuke isbetter than secret love. Proverbs 27:5.

There is no greater sign of love than to be willing to risk rejection in order to helpsomeone spiritually. If you admonish in the right spirit, with the right motive, using anappropriate method, the person who is not living a life worthy of the Gospel of Christ willprobably some day thank you for your love.

    I. WHAT IS IT TO ADMONISH ANOTHER?

The word "admonish" means to correct, counsel, reprove, or warn. See I Thessalonians5:12-15 & I Corinthians 4:14. It would seem on the surface that Paul's instruction to the Roman

Christians to admonish or to "warn" one another, in Romans 15:14, contradicts what he hasjust emphasized. See Romans 14:13. How is it possible to admonish without judging?

II. THE BASIS FOR BEING ABLE TO ADMONISH.

Paul complimented these Christians by letting them know he was convinced they wereable to admonish one another. Here is why he felt that way:

    A. They were FULL OF GOODNESS.That is, they were living holy, Christlike lives. See Matthew 7:3-5.Make sure you clean up your own act before you help someone else clean up his.

    B. They were FILLED WITH KNOWLEDGE.The "knowledge" spoken of here is knowledge of God's Word. Our basis for

admonishing someone else must be definitely supported by Scripture. We are not toimpose standards contrary to Scripture, such as the Pharisees did. If we are notlearning Scriptures as we should, we need to be admonished. See II Timothy 2:15.

    III. HOW TO ADMONISH.

    A. It must be done with deep concern and love. Read Acts 20:31. Note Pauladmonished with tears. See also II Thessalonians 3:15.

    B. It must be done with pure motives. Read I Corinthians 4:14. We do not do it toembarrass or scandalize a person.

    C. It must be done with a proper goal. Our one basic objective must be to help theperson become more mature in Jesus Christ. See Colossians 1:28-29.

Not only are we to admonish each other when we have sinned, corrective admonishing,we are also to warn each other to stay away from sin, preventive admonishing. See Colossians3:16. It is the responsibility of each of us to become mature in Christ so we in turn can helpothers become mature.

    Lesson 4BUILDING UP ONE ANOTHER

    SERVE ONE ANOTHER

    Galatians 5:13

We have often heard the expression, We are saved to serve. Not only are we saved toserve Christ, we are saved to serve one another in love.

In the book of Galatians Paul talks about the freedom we have in Christ, see Galatians5:1. Many people to whom Paul was writing thought Salvation was something to be earnedby keeping the law and observing holy days. Paul said just the opposite. Study Galatians 2:16-21.

Paul was careful to tell us that our freedom does not give us the license to do as weplease. True freedom in Christ means we must live in total commitment to Christ. ThoughPaul knew freedom in Christ, yet he frequently introduced himself as a servant of Christ. SeeRomans 1:1 & Philippians 1:1.

Being a servant of Christ involves us with other members of the church. Turning ourlives over to Christ also means turning our lives over to each other. We are part of a body of

which Christ is the head. Study Ephesians 5:23.In the fifth chapter of Galatians Paul is concerned about how Christians relate to each

other. He reminds his readers that the world bites and devours one another, but Christians areto serve one another. What a contrast!

    I. THE WORLD BITES AND DEVOURS ONE ANOTHER. Galatians 5:15-21.Man was designed to live in relationship to others. See Genesis 2:18. When sin entered

the human race, man's need for relationships with others did not cease, but it becamecomplicated and distorted in Romans 1:25. He began to "use" others rather than serve others inlove.

II. CHRISTIANS SERVE ONE ANOTHER IN LOVE. Galatians 5:13.By faith in Christ's death and resurrection, we are set free from the domination of our

sinful natures. Rather than using people for our own good, we can actually serve one another inlove. The acts of this behavior Paul called the fruit of the spirit. See Galatians 5:22-23.This fruit is the result of people in relationship who are not serving each other selfishly, but"serving one another in love."

As a member of the family of God, with all its rights and privileges, a Christian is to bea servant to all other members of that family. And in serving one another in love, we find truefreedom in Jesus Christ. Our deepest needs are met in legitimate ways.

Other passages to consider: Luke 22:27 & Matthew 20:28.

    Lesson 5BUILDING UP ONE ANOTHER

    BEAR ONE ANOTHER'S BURDENS

    Galatians 6:2

It is entirely possible for Christians to be surprised by temptation and fall into sin. SeeGalatians 6:1. Paul is not speaking here of the person who is given over to sin and thus notgenuinely born again.

Our attitude toward such a brother or sister is extremely important and sensitive. We areto restore them, and by so doing help bear their burdens. Christians have a responsibility whenothers sin. We are to attempt to restore that person -- that is, we are to help that personacknowledge his sin and overcome it. In so doing we are bearing that person's burdens andthus fulfilling the law of Christ.

In our lesson this week we will see how Paul gives specific guidelines for carrying outthis process.I. RESTORATION IS A TASK FOR SPIRITUAL CHRISTIANS.

Paul wrote, Ye which are spiritual, restore him, in Galatians 6:1. Generallyspeaking, there are two classes of people in the New Testament; Christians and non-Christians.But there are also two classes of Christians; Spiritual and Carnal. Spiritual Christians live by theSpirit. See Galatians 5:25. They also manifest the fruit of the spirit in their lives. ReadGalatians 5:22-23. Carnal Christians are described in I Corinthians 3:1-5.

Dealing with sin in the life of a carnal Christian is not the task of someone else who isalso carnal. It is the responsibility of someone who is spiritually strong and mature.

II. RESTORATION IS TO BE DONE WITH HUMILITY.

Restore such an one in the spirit of meekness, wrote Paul. In essence he wasreferring to humility. Read Galatians 6:3.

Christians who approach another Christian about sin must do so with a great sense oftheir own unworthiness to be called children of God.

There is a no more effective approach than a gentle, compassionate, kind and patientattitude when dealing with another person. Study Colossians 3:12-13.

III. RESTORATION MUST BE DONE CAUTIOUSLY.

Consider yourself lest you also be tempted, said Paul in Galatians 6:1. The lusts ofthe flesh are very deceptive - - and very attractive. Some Christians when attempting to helpanother believer who is trapped in some sin, soon find themselves participating in the same sin. This Paul warned against. Read I Corinthians 10:12-13.

Evaluate your life by asking yourself these questions: Am I walking in the Spirit - ledby the Spirit? In other words, am I among those who are spiritual? Am I truly helping to bearthe burdens of those who have suffered spiritual set-backs?

    Lesson 6BUILDING UP ONE ANOTHER

    Submit To One Another

    Ephesians 5:21

The words submit or submission are found often in the New Testament. In its mostgeneral use, the word "submission" means to yield to another's admonition and advice - in otherwords, to be obedient. The word "submission" describes the believer's attitude toward his Lordand Master, Jesus Christ. It is also used to describe the relationship of one Christian withanother. We are to "submit to one another."

When Christ came into the world he brought into being a whole new approach torelationships between people. In the pagan world of Jesus' day, there was no such thing asmutual submission. Man basically operated out of selfish motives. The same is true today.Obedience and submission become a means to a selfish end and brought forth equality.

In Christ all believers have the potential to submit to one another in the fear of God.Even those who have positions of authority -- pastors, husbands, employers -- are to relate toothers with an attitude of submission.

This is what Christ demonstrated for us, when He, the Lord of the universe, became aservant to all men. Read Philippians 2:6-7. Paul made it clear that all Christians are to followChrist's example. Study Philippians 2:3-8.

Study carefully the following scriptures that teach submission and obedience to others.Note the variety of relationships in the context of each directive. Use these scriptures as criteriafor evaluating your own attitude toward other members of Christ's body.

    I. Pastors to other members of the Church. See 1 Peter 5:2-3.

II. Church members to pastors. See 1 Timothy 5:17-20 & Hebrews 13:17.

III. Younger men to older men. 1 Peter 5:5-6.

    IV. Husband to wife. See 1 Peter 3:7 & 1 Corinthians 7:3-4.

    V. Wives to husbands. See Ephesians 5:22,24 & 1 Peter 3:1-4.

VI. Parents to children. Ephesians 6:4 & Colossians 3:21.

VII. Children to parents. Ephesians 6:1-3 & Colossians 3:20.

    Lesson 7BUILDING UP ONE ANOTHER

    ENCOURAGE AND EDIFY ONE ANOTHER

    1 Thessalonians 5:11

Paul constantly did all he could to build up the body of Christ. But knowing he couldonly do so much as an individual, his strategy was to get others to do the same. StudyColossians 2:2 & 4:8.

God's design and plan is that every Christian be a functioning part of the church. SeeEphesians 4:15-16.

Paul's directive to the Thessalonians church is an appropriate exhortation with which toconclude our study. They were told to comfort themselves together and to edify one another. The word comfort means to console or to encourage. Coupled as it is with the word edify,or to build up, it is used to describe functions that will help Christians to be built up in theirfaith, and to help them build up one another in Christ.

    I. THE PRIMARY MEANS FOR ENCOURAGING ONE ANOTHER.

Paul made it clear what constituted the primary means for mutual encouragement --God's truth. Study Titus 1:9 & 1 Thessalonians 2:13.

In other words, the best way for us to comfort, or build up one another, is to skillfullyuse the Word of God in our counseling. See 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 as an example.

There is nothing so powerful, so significant, so reassuring as the Word of God. We arenot sharing human philosophy or temporal concepts and ideas that are limited to space and time.See Matthew 24:35. This is why God's Word is to be the primary means Christians are to use tocomfort one another and to edify one another.

II. HOW WE CAN ENCOURAGE AND BUILD UP ONE ANOTHER.

We must first realize how important the Word of God is within the body of Christ.

Secondly, we must determine to learn what Gods word says. Thirdly, we must be ready toshare the Word with others who are in special need of encouragement. Read Hebrews 10:24-25.

Christians in New Testament days met together for the church to function -- to mutuallyencourage each other. See Colossians 3:16.

In conclusion, we must understand how important each of us are if the church is tofunction the way it should. We should love one another, be of the same mind with one another, admonish one another, serve one another, bear one another's burdens, submit to one another, andencourage and edify one another.
