SpaceShipOne & White Knight 1/32 scale
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTION
October 4, 2004, MOJAVE DESERT, California (CNN) -- SpaceShipOne achieved its most spectacular flight yet, climbing to an altitude of 377,591 feet (71 1/2 miles) to win the $10 million Ansari X Prize on Monday.
X Prize officials said it set an altitude record exceeding the military X-15's top altitude of 354,200 feet (67 miles) set on August 22, 1963.

There is no 1/32 X Prize award for a card model of the SpaceShipOne but its equivalent is the feeling when you hold in your hands 1/32 SpaceShipOne attached to the WhiteKnight mother ship. The presented kit supplies this opportunity.
The results depend on your modeling skills. Build the kit with maximal accuracy. Do not allow mess on the external surfaces of the kit. The real thing is gloss white without any mess on it!
It is highly recommended to print the kit’s card pages on semi-gloss or gloss card.
Be very careful when gluing transparent illuminators. They must be crystal clear. Be careful not to make a mess of glue or finger tips. This holds true for the entire kit.
Start the construction with SpaceShipOne.
First assemble the wing and tail reinforcing structure as it is shown on view A. Then glue the external surfaces. The kit provides possibility the tails of the SS1 to be rotated from flight to entering atmosphere position and vice versa. A stripe of elastic rubber band will hold it in flight position /see viewB/
Continue with the fuselage. Assemble the pilot seats together with pilot’s belts and controls. Follow step by step viewE, F, G to build the nose. Then build rear part of the fuselage as it is shown on viewH. Glue the wing-tale assembling to the fuselage following viewJ. If you like your SpaceShipOne to be in landed position on the ground you can add undercarriage. If not, in flight position or attached to the mother ship WhiteKnight you can omit the undercarriage /view K/. If you want the tale to be constantly in atmosphere entering position you can fix it by using two hydraulic cylinders (parts63). If you want to attach SpaceShipOne to the mother ship, pay attention to the holes for attachment on the upper surfaces (parts47, 47d, 57, 57a) and later on the White Knight parts 122, where you sould insert the SpaceShipOne metal wire holders 122m.
Now you can continue with the mother ship White Knight. Start from the interior and nose. The procedure is similar to the one with SS1. Build the entire fuselage part as it is shown on view R.
Put away the ready fuselage for now and focus your attention to the two gondolas.
Then assembly the undercarriage cowlings and the main undercarriage wheels (views S, T). The undercarriage wheels are needed if you like your SS1+WK to be presented on the ground. Build the gondolas skeletons as it is shown in view U. Then cover them with the external surfaces parts following view V. The external surfaces are large parts. Be very careful to keep the straightness and symmetry of the construction. Note that parts 88 and 95 are symmetric but not identical.
Build the horizontal stabilizers and glue them to the gondolas’ tales. Make sure they are strictly perpendicular to the gondolas’ vertical stabilizers.
Continue with the wing. The wing is untypical as a construction for card models but its structure represents the real wing built from composite materials. The hexagonal structure of the wing reinforcement elements in some way repeats this composite structure. Assembly the four parts of the wing as it is shown in views W, X, Y. Be careful not to avoid any twisting of the parts. They should have constant angle. Glue together the central parts of the wing, then the side parts strictly keeping the geometry and vertical angles. Reinforce the wing with the connecting stripes 119, 120, 121, gluing them on the joint lines. Then add the two wing tips.
Assemble the SS1’ and WK engines’ pads following view Z. Pay attention to the SS1 metal holders. The holders of the SS1 glued on the pad should be able to enter easily in the SS1 holding holes and to keep it firmly in attached position. Probably some fine adjustment at the holders will be needed. If you want to attach constantly the SS1 to WK you can omit this procedure and just glue SS1 to its holding pad.
Continue the preparations of building WK with the engines following views ZB and ZC.
At this point all the parts for assembling WK are ready. Glue the gondolas to the wing first. Control the correct position of the gondolas and stabilizers in all three dimensions – side, front and up. Make sure that the gondolas are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the wing central line and also make sure the horizontal stabilizers lay in one plane. Reinforce the construction by adding the gondolas-wing cowlings (parts146-149) .
Now add the fuselage to the construction. Then glue on it theengine pads and the engines. Be careful when gluing the SS1 launch pad. It should be glued very tightly. The supplied joint cowlings of the wing and pads are given for this purpose. Finish the SS1 and WK with some small details like antennas and glue the main undercarriage to WK if you like it to be on the ground. After some inevitable playing with SS1 itself attach it to its launch pad on WK.
