INTRODUCTION
SPANDAN Life Moves on… is an initiative of Lakshya Child Development Center, Indore. Spandan is an effort to preventthe rise of suicides in our state. This initiative was launched by renowned psychologist Mrs. Maya Bohra along with a team of psychologists, psychiatrists and lay counselors in Madhya Pradesh. The organization works on mental health awareness, suicide prevention and awareness. Awareness program is conducted through various awareness campaigns, seminars and events. For the purpose of suicide prevention, the organization runs a 24x7 helpline number which offers free of cost telephonic and individual counseling to individuals in distress. Till date, Spandan has saved more than 670 lives on the verge of suicide.
A small scale survey was conducted among the 17-50 year old male and female inidividuals living in the state of Madhya Pradesh to understand the level of awareness about mental health and suicide. In order to work towards awareness for the same, it is imperative to understand the people’s belief on myths and facts related the subject. Thus, the objective of the survey was to understand people’s view about mental health and to analyze how many suicide-related myths could be decoded. Therefore the form was divided into two parts, the first being general mental health awareness and the second being suicide related myths. Data was collected through an online form and through paper based forms. The survey was taken by 1,659 individuals.
The survey was designed and conducted by Ms. Aparajitha Chandelkar, Ms. Isha Bardia, Ms. Shikha Bohra, Ms. Rachna Chitnis, Ms. Prachi Bohra, and Ms. Ritika Sharma under the guidance of Ms. Maya Bohra – Rehabilitation and Counseling Psychologist.
While the people generally articulated some amount of awareness regarding mental health and accepted that it is a stigmatized topic in the society that needs to be spoken about, most of the individuals reported being unaware about the Govt. policy related to mental health. A substantial percentage of the individuals who took the survey showed beliefs in the myths related to suicide. It can be safely stated that most people are unaware about the facts related to suicide. Hence, there is a huge need for awareness about mental health and suicide in the state.
This year, the organization aims to conduct a specific study with the student population of the state and measure their understanding of the topic.

FACTS ABOUT SUICIDE
Only 10-12% of suicides are due to mental illness. Behind majority of suicides, factors other than mental illness are responsible
like unemployment, failure, guilt, exam stress, breakup, divorce etc.
A person committing suicide doesn’t want to end his/her life; one just want to end his/her sufferings. Thus, we can help them if we take right actions at the
right time.
Reminding a suicidal person about family’s suffering post their suicide will not stop them from committing suicide. It will only increase their stress level and
chances of committing suicide will definitely increase.
Talking about suicide to those who have suicidal thoughts will not provoke suicidal tendency instead it will us know their reason behind such thoughts.
Suicide is not an instantaneous decision. A person committing suicide gives a lot of warning signs before committing suicide, which we usually ignore.
After a failed attempt of suicide the person will plan more effective ways of committing suicide next time.
The person who talks about suicide is not always seeking attention; they may be severely depressed and require urgent professional help. There are very few
instances/cases of attention seeking.
Research has shown that there are more chances of having suicidal thoughts (which then become the act) if a person had witnessed a suicide in their family.
BE ALERT. YOUR AWARENESS CAN SAVE A LIFE.
