Next to “to be” (ser & estar), “to have” is what Spanish

Actually, in many languages this is the case.

The infinitive tener is the equivalent of “to have” in English.

• This is a very interesting verb, as you will see. Spanish speakers use it in many expressions where speakers of English use the verb “to be.” You’ll see this a little later.

There are many idiomatic expressions that use the verb tener. One of the most frequently

used is to express age:

Literally: to have _____ years

True Meaning: to be _____ years old

When using these idiomatic expressions, conjugate the verb (tener) according to the subject of the sentence.
