Long before the Mid-South was populated by cows and cotton fields, dinosaurs roamed the land. A traveling exhibit now open allows children and adults to explore dinosaur habitats to better understand how these mysterious animals lived and use inquiry skills to examine what they left behind. Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice transports families back to the Cretaceous Period (145 - 65 million years ago), the time when dinosaurs last lived on earth. Children go face-to-face with the prehistoric world and meet dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes. The exhibit, created for children ages 3 - 10, features two distinct environments and a variety of activities. A Field Research Station allows children to step into the role of paleontologist by uncovering fossils with brushes and creating drawings of the dinosaur environment using fossil rubbings and tracings. The steamy “Land of Fire” connects visitors with the prehistoric home of the Triceratops and T-Rex. Children can circle the land in insect costumes and buzz through a volcano with oozing lava. Work through a swampy bog and identify an ecosystem of animals and plants. No coats are needed for a trip across the “Land of Ice” where visitors meet two dinosaurs, a Troodon and Edmontosaurus, who made their homes in the cold climate of Alaska. Activities include: climbing rocky steps, breezing down an icy slide, and hopping across stepping stones in an icy river. Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice utilizes new research about climates in which dinosaurs were able to survive and thrive. The discovery of numerous species of dinosaurs in the arctic is causing scientists to reconsider old theories about dinosaurs only living in tropical climates. It is now known that many dinosaurs, including Edmontosaurus and Troodon, lived in cold weather climates for at least part of the year. Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice is the first child-centered exhibit in the country dedicated to expanding the understanding of dinosaur habitat and range. The exhibit will be at the museum through May 13, 2012. Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice™ was created by Minnesota Children’s Museum and is sponsored locally by Kronos Energy Solutions.

Come visit Ginger and her friends, the Good for You Crew at The Children’s Museum of Memphis, now through June 24 in the traveling exhibit Good for You: Healthy Fun on the Run. Ginger is a potato chip eating, soda guzzling couch potato who loves to watch T.V. When her mother orders her out of the house, she and her faithful dog George begin an adventure that leads to a world of healthy foods and active play. With childhood obesity ranking as one of the most important issues facing the United States, especially in Tennessee, the exhibit is part of the museum’s health initiative to teach children and their families that living healthy, active lifestyles can be easy and fun.

When guests enter the exhibit, they are greeted by life sized cutouts of Ginger and the Good for You Crew. In the introductory area, visitors listen to their heart beat and participate in hands-on activities that teach the importance of balancing good food choices (energy in) with physical activities (energy out). Visitors enter a room with an interactive video wall where they use their whole bodies to capture floating images of foods to create a balanced meal.

As visitors continue through the exhibit, they pick authentic looking fruits and vegetables in Sam’s garden and take them to Maria’s Farmer’s Market where they assume the roles of shoppers

and sellers as they learn about healthy food choices. To promote physical movement, children are invited into Nelson’s Treehouse

for climbing and then visit Michael and Lea’s campsite where they explore a cave, traverse a rock wall and try out a kayak. Children then venture into Josh’s Living Room where families will enjoy activities like building cardboard forts and playing twister showing the many ways you can be active in your own home.

Good for You: Healthy Fun on the Run was created by Creative Discovery Museum in Chattanooga with funding from the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. BlueCross BlueShield Foundation has also provided funding for the exhibit to come to The Children’s Museum of Memphis.

A Fun Evening of Glitz and Red Carpet Glamour

The museum’s annual fund raiser, Cirque du CMOM, amazed more than 900 guests on February 4 and raised money beyond it’s goal for the museum’s educational exhibits and programs. This year’s theme was “Night in Hollywood: A Vanity Affair.” Guests enjoyed a comprehensive array of food by more than 30 of Memphis’ finest chefs as well as mulitiple bars and a signature drink from Alchemy. The Cirque committee once again held a successful online auction prior to the party, with an astounding array of items from all over Memphis and beyond.Guests were greeted by paparazzi as they walked down the red carpet into the storefronts of Rodeo Drive and the entrance to the Beverly Hills Hotel. T h e “shady side” of Hollywood wowed guests with street performers and a sliderbar on “Skid Row.” Inside the Ciros tent visitors were treated to a special bourbon bar with an “Old Hollywood” feel. Attendees danced the night away to the tunes of DJ Mark Anderson in the IBERIABANK Vanity Affair Room.Co-chairs of this year’s fund-raiser were Cindy Dobbs and Janie Lowery. A special thanks to this year’s sponsors and committee for such a great party!

Program Spotlight: Murphy The Manatee Visits Memphis

Jammin’ to the Music

Saturday, April 28, 10am-1pm

Join us for a special guest storytelling, book reading and signing of Murphy the Manatee Visits Memphis, Saturday, March 17 from 2 – 4 pm. Murphy the Manatee visits Memphis was written by Erin Thorpe, a native of Memphis. She was commissioned by James Jackson to write this fictional story loosely based on a realistic event that involved his experience on the mighty Mississippi River. James and a friend were fishing on the banks of the river in Memphis when they discovered a live manatee stuck in the shallow waters near the bank.

An artist will be on hand to draw caricatures of the visitors.

Since June of 1989 AutoZone, Inc. has been a strong supporter of The Children’s Museum (CMOM) and a champion of our mission which also reflects the AutoZone company values. In addition to supporting the museum through

charitable donations and in-kind gifts, AutoZone fosters community involvement in philanthropic activities and encourages others to get involved with educating the children we serve through the joy of play.

General Information Board of Trustees

MEMBERSHIP NEWS FLASHThe Association of Children’s Museums (ACM) has revised its ACM Reciprocal Program policies as follows:

Effective April 1, 2013:

•The ACM Reciprocal Program will be called the ACM Reciprocal Network.

•The ACM Reciprocal Network admission policy will shift from free admission to: 50% off general admission for up to six (6) people. Additional visitors must pay current admission price.

•Family memberships that include ACM Reciprocal Network benefits must be sold at a minimum price of $125 or greater.

•All current local restrictions will be eliminated. Museums that participate in the ACM Reciprocal Network may not request any new local restrictions.

How does this affect CMOM Contributing Memberships with ACM Reciprocal benefits?

•CMOM Contributing Memberships with ACM Reciprocal Network benefits with an expiration date of March 31, 2013 or before will receive free admission (or current restrictions) through this date at other participating ACM Reciprocal Network museums.

•Beginning on April 1, 2013, Reciprocal benefits will change from free admission to 50% discount on general admission for up to six (6) people at other participating ACM Reciprocal Network museums. Additional visitors must pay current admission price.

Note: With these parameters, the benefits for a one-year membership with reciprocal benefits sold after April 1, 2012 will have partial year free admission and partial year 50% discounted admission. How many months of each benefit depend on the expiration date.

Please contact our Membership Department at 320-3171 with any questions.
