BRHS Community,

As you get this we will be starting AP testing to be followed by SOL testing. A significant amount of time has been put into getting ready for these assessments. Please see our web site for schedules and prepara-tion opportunities. Also be sure to check the school counseling page for summer course opportunities.

The last day of school is June 9. Students may not end the school year early. Students with an excused absence the last days of school may make up any missed assign-ments over the summer through the main office.

Congrats to our students involved with a great Prom, Spring Musical, and DECA state and nationals. Our fine arts musical programs all received superior ratings from

the state this year, the first time ever. CON-GRATS!

June 5 is our school awards ceremony, and Graduation is June 11.

BR Trip to China Features Music

49 students and 20 chaperones from the Broad Run High School Band, Choir, and Orchestra (Ryan Dempsey, Jen Kauffmann, Carrie Al-bers directors) traveled to Beijing and Xi’an, China April 4-13, 2017. There they had the opportunity to shadow classes with Chinese students and share concerts with both the Beijing MS #22 and the Tie Yi High School in Xi’an. Students also visited Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, and the Terracotta Warriors.

News from the Clinic

If your student will have medication remaining in the clinic at the end of the school year please be aware, VA State requirements do not allow storage of medications over the summer. Please arrange to pick up the remaining medication between the hours of 8:30am and 4pm by JUNE 9, 2017. Medication cannot be stored over the summer and will be discarded if it is not collected by the end of the day (4pm) on JUNE 9th.

The MSA club at Broad Run recently held a fundraising dinner for orphans across Asia. They raised almost $2,000 in one night. The dinner included food, perfor-mances, and a photo booth. If you are interested in joining MSA or helping with future events, contact Rida Ali at 786ridaa@gmail.com

Students completed projects within groups to commemo-rate a recent genocide. Stu-dents displayed their projects in an exhibition at SBHS on April 24, 2017 from 7:00-9:30 pm at Stone Bridge High School. At Stone Bridge, students had the opportunity to hear Emery Ru-tagonya, a Rwandan Geno-cide survivor speak. Kate Eng-lish, from the Educator’s Insti-tute for Human Rights speak and heard the music of Marc Toureille aka Marc2Ray, a Ar-menian Genocide Advocate.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE TESTING OFFICE

This year Broad Run will be offering a condensed Standards of Learning (SOL) testing schedule in order to minimize the disruption of a modified schedule while allowing minimal disruption to instruction. In order to condense our testing into a week of testing you will notice that we will be offering a morning and afternoon testing block with a morning and afternoon instructional block. In modifying the school bell schedule, we will be having 3 hour instructional and testing blocks, which will result in minimal loss to instruction. Students who are at Monroe Technology Center, Academy of Science, and Academy of Engineering & Technology will be hand scheduled into the testing schedule.

Loudoun County Public Schools offers the BEHIND THE WHEEL [BTW] course here at Broad Run. Eligible students are those who:  Hold a Virginia driving permit  Have successfully completed the classroom portion of 

Driver Education with a passing grade  Have been practicing their driving skills with their parents.   

45 hours of practice driving with a parent is the minimum suggested by BTW teachers for students to be successful in the BTW course.     The cost is $225.00.   There is currently no waiting list. Students can pick up the required forms in the main office.

WHAT IS PROJECT GRADUATION?

Project Graduation, part of the Broad Run High School Parent-Teacher-Student organization - a 501(3)(c), is a nationwide effort to provide graduating seniors with a fun, safe place to celebrate their last night together as high school students. This all-night, alcohol and drug-free party is exclusively for graduating seniors and is held at the Ashburn Village Sports Pavilion. The event is held on graduation night (June 11) from 11:30pm through 5:00am (June 12). The students receive a night of fun events, music, games, food, and prizes - lots of prizes. Parents receive the peace of mind knowing that their graduates are celebrating in a safe environment. Want more info: www.brhspg.org
