The 2011-12 school year is racing along. We are beginning the 2nd semester and preparing all of our students to meet the high standards that are in place for each grade level. Assessments are ongoing with various assessment tools, DRA, PALS, SME, running records, and formative and summative assessments. All of the information is used to support our students through the learning process. Teachers use multiple pieces of evidence to plan, teach and assess in all of the content areas. LCPS provides many resources, tools and materials to our staff and students to meet those learning targets. I encourage families to review the take home materials that your children are provided. These materials are strong indicators of the learning and achievement of your children. Our boys and girls are demonstrating academic success! National African American History month is celebrated during the month of February. Our classrooms pay tribute to individuals who have influenced our nation. Money for Lunch? Check your child’s lunch

account balance from the convenience of your own computer on Café Prepay www.pay4lunch.com.

**You’ll need your child’s 6-digit ID number to register. The students use this number to buy lunch.

Parents will be notified of negative lunch bal-ances every Sunday night through the Connect–Ed system. An alternative lunch will be served if the ac-count is not paid when the balance is over $5.00. If the balance is not paid, the child will be given the opportunity to call home or will be given milk and a cheese sandwich for lunch if payment cannot be ar-ranged.

Please check your child’s balance online. We really don’t want to give out cheese sandwiches.

If due to a disability, you need assistance to enable you to participate meaningfully in any school activity, please contact the school at least five working days prior to the activity.

Green Kids Update Green Crocs (Green Kids) update: We will be-

gin this month with a “waste free lunch” where we weigh our trash and set goals to greatly reduce that amount. We will begin our outdoor classroom with a salad science garden where we plant different lettuces and watch them grow, and can actually eat what we produce. This is not only a good environ-mental lesson, but it motivates children to eat healthier and understand where types of food origi-nate. For more information, check out www.epa.gov/osw/education/quest/ .

We will be having a logo con-test soon as well, so you won’t have to see this one again.

work is on display this month in the Principal’s Gallery: Jonathan Bacigalupi, Jackson Carawan, Peyton Cummings, Nour El Hage, Noah Engle, Patricia Guerra, Ryan Jardine, Bri Marvil, Victoria Navarrete, Gavin Pitts, Rebecca Scott, and Mia Valentino.

Counselor’s Corner In January, students in 1st grade learned about and decorated their room with kindness. Grade 2 students

practiced cooperation and responsibility. Grades 3 and 4 learned about ways to minimize interpersonal conflict, including not reacting and looking at different perspectives. Grade 5 continued their study of tolerance with an exploration of “fair and unfair.” Grades 3-5 all began learning about and discussing study tips. Please look for links to information on study tips on my web page.

In February, 1st grade will continue to explore kindness. They will also begin a unit on feelings. 2nd grade will learn about peer pressure, diversity and begin to explore self control. Third grade will continue work with study skills. Grades 3-5 will all learn more about setting a goal. They will write a new goal or tweak the goal they wrote last quarter based upon the information they gained from reviewing their report card. We will also work on conflict resolution skills.

I am continuing to meet with groups of students during lunches. These will continue to run throughout the year in sessions of between four and six weeks. No student may participate in a lunch group without parent/guardian permission. I am working hard to ensure that every child that could benefit from a group is able to participate in one. If you did not receive my counseling program overview/group needs inventory during the first week of school there is a link to it on my web page (I’m under “teachers”– then “Bresnan”).

Preschool Inclusion Program We are proud to announce that for the 2012-2013

school year, Kenneth W. Culbert Elementary School will once again have an inclusion preschool model in our early childhood programs. This classroom will edu-cate both typically developing preschool children from the Kenneth W. Culbert attendance area and children with disabilities. Important information about the inclu-sion model:

• The program is 5 days a week, Monday-Friday, from 10:30 a.m. -2:35 p.m.

• The class is open to typically developing chil-dren who are or will be 4 years old by 9/30/2012. Children must be toilet trained.

• Parents will be required to arrange/provide transportation to and from school.

There are a limited number of openings in our pro-gram, so please review the criteria to see if your child meets our specific requirements. Applications for the inclusion preschool program will be available in mid-February and qualified applicants will be screened in March. If you have any questions regarding the pro-gram you may contact Cory Joseph at 540-751-2540.

Music Notes Save the date of March 1 for our

Specialists Night, 6:30 p.m. Come out and see some of the things that your students have been learning about in their specials.

Congratulations to Caroline Bolen, Riannon Miller, and Grace Templeton for being selected to represent Kenneth Culbert in the 2012 All County Chorus. You can show your support for them at the concert on April 28, 1:30 p.m. at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn.

Relay Recess of KWC - May 4 The Relay Recess of KWC will be held on Friday,

May 4, 2012 as a PTA After School Activity from 2:35 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will “Relay” around the track to honor and/or remember loved ones touched by can-cer. Jeni Stuart will make a brief presentation at the February 16 PTA meeting about the Relay Recess of KWC. Donations will be accepted to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Read Across America Week We will celebrate Dr. Seuss’

Birthday with a kick-off assembly at 8:15 AM Monday, February 27. Students may dress as their favor-ite Seuss character!

Back by popular demand, Thing 1 and Thing 2 will be Team Captains for relay races for the closing assembly at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 2. Students’ names will be drawn from a hat to partici-pate in the relay race.

Local community members will also visit and read to our students on Monday and Friday.

If all students read daily for 20 minutes during Drop Everything and Read, we will celebrate their success of reading over 9,000 minutes!

We will also be collecting new and gently used books to be donated to a local shelter.

It's going to be a great Read Across America Week!

A Note From the Health Clinic

Students who are returning to school after a hospi-talization (surgery or illness), or a procedure (broken bone or tests) must have a release from the physician. The release should include the following information: approval for the student to return to school, the activity level allowed, any current restrictions, and the duration of those restrictions.

• Children who have fevers (100 degrees and above) should be kept home for 24 hours after the fever subsides.

• If your child is ill because of a contagious dis-ease, such as strep throat, chicken pox, etc. or head lice, it would be helpful to note the reason for the absence when you call the absentee call-line. This will help the school take measures to know the extent of the disease or head lice and reduce its spread.

Be sure to keep the emergency contact phone numbers and information updated so that we can reach you if your child is ill or injured.

Medication in School Parents/Guardians are advised to give

medications at home whenever possible. If it is necessary to medication at school, the following regulations must be followed:

A parent/guardian must bring medication (including cough drops) to the health clinic assistant or designee. All medication brought to school must be in the original container with appropriate label intact. Please use Medication Authorization Form 12:3 for all Over-the-Counter and Prescription Medications.

Non-prescription medications must be in the origi-nal package with the name of the medication and in-structions. It must be accompanied by a signed parent note or Medication Authorization Form 12:3 completed and signed by a parent (available on our Web site).

Prescription Medications require written instruc-tions from a physician in order to administer prescrip-tion medication, which should include:

• Student’s name • Name and purpose of medication • Dosage and time of administration • Possible side effects and actions to take if

those occur • End date for administering the medicine • Parent signature which gives permission to

administer medication and to contact the physi-cian if necessary

• Physician signature All prescription medication must be in the original

pharmacy bottle with proper label containing the stu-dent’s name, medication, dosage and instructions for administration.

Parents must transport all medication (including cough drops) to and from school.
