Message from the Campus Principal Dear Parents / Guardians, It has been an extremely interesting term getting to know the school and already I have had many thought-provoking conversations with students, teachers and parents about how to further improve our school. Teaching & learning will always play an important part in the development of our students and our school and this is something my Heads of School are constantly championing to improve standards in our classrooms. I would like to take this opportunity to express my huge gratification to the Head of Sekolah Sri Tenby, Puan Lee who will be retiring at the end of this term after eight years with the school. Her warmth and experience has enabled her to establish one of the best performing National Schools in KL and she will be sorely missed by us all. We would like to wish Puan Lee all the best in her well-deserved retirement. During the December vacation the school’s maintenance team will be undertaking several projects to further improve the environment and learning experiences of our students. You may already be aware our new cleaning team are already in place and we expect to see a continuing line of improvement in this area. We will be working with our catering team Diners Gourmet over the next month to refit some of the equipment and paint inside the kitchens. These will be the first steps over the next year to help improve our catering facilities further. TIS Primary will receive a new coat of paint over the break and alongside SST we will see the arrival of two climbing frames for our younger children to play on. We are carrying out essential maintenance to our polycarbonate walkways while increasing further the area covered by these outside of SST. Increasingly, Engage is playing an important role in helping improve our communication with you. At present 24% of parents have not logged in at all so will not be able to access Primary homework or the CCA programme. Please be sure you are able to gain access to this as we will increase the usage of our Engage system over time. A huge thank you to all the parents who are wearing their bright green ‘Tenby Parent’ lanyards. It makes it so much easier to identify if a person should be on our premises or not. Please ensure you wear your lanyard so it can be easily seen by staff. A common misconception is that funding for the school is decreasing whilst school fees are rising. I can categorically state that funding has indeed increased by 20% last year with a similar figure expected for the next financial year. Staff salaries will also be increasing as well as the investment in resources and facilities. I would like to personally thank all of the Tenby teachers and staff for all their hard work over the last term and special thanks to all the students and parents for your support. Please note Sekolah Sri Tenby ends on 1st December 12:00hrs and Tenby International Primary and Secondary Schools will end on 2nd December 12:00hrs. The School will commence next year on 4th January 2017. May I wish you a very restful and peaceful holiday. Best regards, Ian Temple International & Private National Schools Setia Eco Park

Message from the Campus Principal

Dear Parents / Guardians,

It has been an extremely interesting term getting to know the school and already I have had many thought-provoking conversations with students, teachers and parents about how to further improve our school.

Eco News Eco School Committee 2016-2017 Eco School Programme Assessors’ Visit to Tenby Schools SEP Tenby Schools SEP applied for the Green Flag Award 2016 for schools carrying out Eco School programmes. Due to this application, we were visited by the WWF Education Manager and two other assessors of Eco School Programmes to assess our programmes onsite on Friday 18th November from 14:00hrs – 16:40hrs. It was amazing to know that we have so much to show during the school tour which started from the Eco Info Centre to Cafeteria, Tenby’s Science Garden, Eco Interactive Hub, Tenby’s Orchard, Tenby’s Eco Cube, impressive and well laid out Eco Board of TIS Primary and then back to Conference Room for the presentation by our Eco Warriors. At the spruced up Eco Cube, the assessors were briefed about the recycling initiatives of students and teachers and how students are encouraged to recycle every day and on greater emphasis on every Thursday.

Page 3: Message from the Campus Principal

Aqmarul and Tze Ting presented our 2015 “My Green Print in School” project with full confidence. We too had prepared Chandan Kaur, Natassja and Jia Hoong to speak about our recycling process in school and how we carry out campaigns to inform students how to put the correct recyclables into the correct recycling bins for paper, plastic bottles and aluminium cans. After our presentation, our assessors made the following comments and suggestions to move forward our Eco effort:- “ We are impressed with the large number of plant species which you have in your Garden” “ This is one of the few Eco Schools with a students formulated Eco Code initiated by Mr Ross

Armitage” The presence of plants has attracted other insects to our garden especially there is the presence of

an unique and unusual red specie of red dragon flies in our garden This shows that Biodiversity is working in our garden! There is a need to be self- sufficient to prepare our own composts as fertilizers Eco Warriors are to be challenged to resolve difficult plant growth of roses with solutions to overcome

the problem Vegetable like cucumber and fruit like rock melons which are low maintenance products are encouraged to be planted in the school compound The waterlogged area at the Orchard area can be easily resolved by using “Bio-Pori” solution Under unavoidable circumstances, plastic/polystyrene can be used but they must not end up in the

landfills. Thus managing our waste is very important As an Eco School, we must have affiliation with other schools within Malaysia as well as overseas for

sharing Thus it had been a very beneficial session meeting our assessors who had shared useful information and guidance with us to improve our environment. The result of this application will only be released during the closing ceremony of the 5th International Eco Conference which will be held in Sepilok, Sabah from 13th -16th December 2016 Opening of our Biodiversity Resource Garden This is a whole school event on Tuesday 29th November from 14:40-16:00hrs and everyone in Tenby Community is invited to join in this event to know more about our Biodiversity Resource Garden which includes a “Biodiversity Resource Garden Explorer” competition for all classes to send a team each of three members to participate. Asia's Largest Youth Movement - The 24 Hour Race KL 2016

On the morning of the 19th November 2016, over 1000 youths were gathered at IGB International school to participate in one of the most highly anticipated events of the year – the 24 Hour Race. The event that not only seeks to push your physical limitations but aims to raise awareness on the pressing issue of modern day slavery.

Along with three of my fellow seniors (Wan Ting, Alesha and Sarah), I was beyond honoured to have been able to be a part of this year’s 24 Hour Race KL Organising Committee.

The 24 Hour Race was founded in Hong Kong in 2010 and has since expanded to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and most recently, Seoul. In the span of seven years, the 24 Hour Race has already engaged over 150,000 students and raised over HK$3 million to support trafficked victims and fight against human trafficking. Hard to imagine that this amazing feat was accomplished by a group of teens, isn’t it?

With over 1000 participants this year, we managed to double our numbers from our previous race. Our sole beneficiary this year is SUKA Society, one of Malaysia’s most internationally recognised NGOs and recipient of the United Nations Malaysia Award 2015. Teams were able to choose where their money went to, whether it would be put into teaching income-generating skills to the trafficked women, educating trafficked children or even training government officials so that they will be equipped with the basic skills needed to better engage with these victims.

At 8am on the Saturday, runners were bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as they sat on the field while they were being briefed right before the race. I laid my eyes upon the sea of people who were gathered together to stand against a common cause - it was truly inspiring.

The race commenced as the starting line ribbon was cut and the air horns blasted. Students in their blue race shirts sped past those who were cheering them on, and the race had finally begun. It was amazing to see how supportive the whole community was; families, friends and even teachers from many schools turned up to show support for their runners. Throughout the 24 hours, there were events like zumba, music performances and even an open mic to keep spirits high throughout the day. Despite having to evacuate indoors several times due to the bad weather, the race still went very smoothly and everyone had an amazing time.

The 24 Hour Race was a one of a kind experience for everyone involved and I am so grateful to have contributed to such a powerful movement and such an important cause. Congratulations to all who participated, including the 20 Tenby teams and those who won awards during the race! Thank you to all who supported the 24 Hour Race and we hope to see you in 2017!

Year 9 Christmas Charity Project 2016 We are pleased to announce that the Year 9s will be involved in a Christmas Community Service project in support of the Wishing Star foundation. The details are as follows: Who is Wishing Star? A community based group that aims to fulfil the wishes/bucket list of children who are terminally ill. You can find out more about the group and what they do on their Facebook page: Wishing Star. How do they work? They target children, mainly cancer patients who have been sent home with no more hope of treatment and most of these children come from very poor and underprivileged backgrounds. The kids make a wish and Wishing Star tries to fulfil these wishes as well as to help the family through the difficult times. Sadly some of the parents lose their jobs while caring for their kids and they need to make ends meet while dealing with their dying child. What can we do? Each class in Year 9 will be designated the wish of one terminally ill child which they will have to work together to fulfil. The main part of this will involve raising funds in the form of cash which will be collected as a class by the students. The students will then raise funds by donating a minimum amount of RM10 or more. This money will then be pooled together as a class to grant the wish of one child. When will this take place? The idea will be pitched to the students during the week of Nov 14th together with a parent letter informing parents about the fund raising initiative. Students will have the week of Nov 21-25 to pull their funds together. If you have any further enquiries regarding this project or would like to know more, please email Ms. Val at [email protected]

Booklists 2017

These booklists will be available to be picked up from the School Bookshop from Tuesday 29th

November 2016 onwards. The books are ordered based on the number of students in each

level and so parents need not worry over shortage of books or books not available when school

starts unless publishers fail us. In the event of any book not available when school starts,

parents need not worry as teachers will get the relevant sheets for students to answer them.

Please be mindful that at the point of finalising the booklists, certain titles for the revised syllabi

for Form 1 and Form 4 are still not available. This is due to the implementation of new

curriculum for KSSM at these two entry points from next year onwards.

For Primary, we have chosen suitable books for Std 1 and Std 4 Mathematics & for Science, we

have recommend parents to buy Set A Science references for Std1-3 and Set B Science

references for Std 4-6.

Message from Puan Lee Mei Leng Sekolah Sri Tenby is the only CIS (Council of International Schools) accredited Malaysian

Curricular school in Malaysia so far .Last year we were given the Malaysian

5 -Stars rating for SKIPS (Standard Kualiti Institusi Pendidikan Swasta). Our practices are

recognised as the best practices of an effective school with students developing holistically.

Our amazing SPM 2015 results ranked us as the top school in Petaling Perdana District of 55

schools with an average school grade of 2.28.The recently released UPSR results showed

100% passes for all six subjects with quality results for the two languages resulting in an

average school grade of 1.95. Students have not mastered the Higher Order Thinking Skills but

we will be emphasising this more in daily lessons besides stressing on the techniques to answer

such questions. Assessments and Examinations results are analysed for forward actions each

time they are released. With these assuring steps, we are confident that our results will be

improving all the time to reach the status of a distinguished school in the district or state.

We have also structured a complete yearly holistic personal development and year group

specific programmes for all our students and the success will be on parents to register their

children to participate. These programmes include the following:-

Onsite leadership and academic excellence programmes for Lower Primary, Upper

Primary, Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary students

Personal Development and Adventurous Camps for Bronze till Platinum levels

Exposure to external invitational programmes for skills specific enhancement

Experiential Learning Trips for each Year Group based on specific curriculum focus

Pasca UPSR & PT3 Programmes to prepare students for the next level of studies

School Wide Reading Programmes to master English and Bahasa Melayu with

compulsory subscriptions of useful magazines to ensure reading is consistently done by

all students. These reading materials are made use of during lessons for specific

areas/skills like comprehension, critical & creative thinking, summary writing and essay

writing.

Environmental sustainability awareness is also cascaded to students, teachers and parents

in the Tenby School Community with the Biodiversity Resource Garden fully completed by

Tuesday 29th November 2016.

Last but not least, I would like to express my great thanks and appreciation to all students,

teachers, parents and friends for your strong support and assistance during my tenure of

eight years in Sekolah Sri Tenby since 2009 when I was the first Principal of the school. I

On Saturday 23rd July 2016, our school was invited to take part in the Project S.A.L.T. 2016

(Sunway Ambassador Leadership Trek) pioneered by the Sunway Student Ambassadors. The

theme of the workshop is "Leadership Redefined: Situational Leadership"

This workshop highlighted to us how to be potential leaders in the new era of modern day

leadership, taught us crucial skills and the mind-sets to be an accomplished leader.

Students from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca participated in this workshop. A total of 20 pupils from

both Form 4 and 5 had taken the initiative to take part in this workshop.
