Academically, we have had numerous students receive scholarships for their outstanding academic perfor- mance and we look forward to our annual Academic Awards night next fall where we will celebrate the outstanding achievements of our junior students. In addi- tion, our school continues to perform exceptionally well on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) and the grade nine EQAO math assessment. We also continue to implement our Manufacturing Specialist High Skills Major Program and this year we had twelve students earn their Canadian Welding Bureau ticket before graduating high school. This type of certification is outstanding and usually reserved for college level students. These are just some of the academic high- lights of another extremely successful school year at Bayside. Student leadership has always been a focal point of Bayside Secondary School and this was another outstanding year in this area. Not only did our Stu- dents’ Council raise money for multiple good causes, they also organized over a dozen special events and activities throughout the year for our school community. Our Athletic Council organized and ran three major spirit days, intramurals and a very successful athletic banquet. We also had several other student leadership groups such as Beyond the Hurt, (anti bullying) Global Awareness, Model United Nations, Red Devil Mentoring, Gay–Straight Alliance and the Photography Club. Research on the essential characteristics of high performing, effective schools shows student ownership and leadership at the top of the list. There is no doubt that Bayside Secondary School has these covered. In athletics, we had close to 300 students and over twenty staff par- ticipate in our interschool athletics program and over 100 students compete at OFSAA, the highest possible level of high school athletic competition. Special mention goes to the senior girls’ rugby team for winning a silver medal and our gymnasts for winning silver and gold medals at OFSAA. Also, our junior girls’ rugby team captured the provincial championship for the third year in a row by winning the Barbarian Cup. In all, our school won eight COSSA gold medals this year. As for next year, I am already looking forward to the major theatre produc- tion Ms. Richmond and the arts department is busy putting together. Stay tuned for more information. As I complete my third year as principal of Bayside Secondary School, I find myself very happy and looking forward to year four. I truly enjoy working with the Bayside community. The students are fantastic, the staff is exceptional and the parents are incredibly supportive. I consider myself very fortunate to be the principal of such a great school. I hope that you will take time to read about all the successes our students have enjoyed this year. We are extremely proud of all of our students’ accomplishments and it is clear, “The Bayside Experience” is second to none. Food for Learning

Prom 2016

Bayside ran two nutrition programmes again this year: a breakfast programme and a lunch programme. In fact, it was likely one of our busi-est years as more students than ever accessed meals at school! Most mornings over thirty stu-dents came for breakfast, helping themselves to bagels, cereal and yoghurt. During periods three and four sandwiches and yoghurt were al-ways available to students who needed a lunch. As well, apples from Grills Orchards were avail-able throughout the day for students in need of a quick energy burst.

Food for Learning programmes could not exist at Bayside without financial support. We would like to thank Kellie Brace, Co-ordinator of Food for Learning, for the funding and support provid-ed throughout the year. As well, monies raised at last year’s “24 4 Hunger” charity event pro-

vided financial support for Bayside’s nutrition programmes. Finally, we would like to thank Bayside’s Students Council members for sell-ing DQ Dilly bars as a fundraiser for Food for Learning. Their efforts resulted in a $500 con-tribution to help ensure no Bayside student is hungry at school. If you would like to contrib-ute to any of our nutrition programmes, please contact Mrs. Morrow at the school (966-2922, ext. 2126), or Kellie Brace, at the Board of

The Prom committee and Ms.Bateman would like to thank those teachers who gave up their night to be there for our graduating class, and for all their help with wrapping up the evening. We can’t host such amazing events without all of our amazing teachers!

The Prom committee worked very hard to provide a new Bayside experience so that grade 12 students could enjoy their night at the Air Force Museum. With change came a lot of extra work and the group worked very hard to provide that for you!

Leadership Trip

Stratford Trip!

October 2016 is approaching quickly, but a few stu-dents still have the opportunity to visit Stratford. A matinee of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth will be our first theatrical event. Students can take in the wonders of Stratford downtown and the beauty of Victoria Park. On the evening of the 20th, students will experience the musical A Chorus Line - this marks the first time the musical has been done on this type of stage! We stay overnight at the Strat-ford Festival Inn, where we will have breakfast in

the morning. Before our last production, Shake-speare’s As You Like It, students will have the op-portunity to take a warehouse tour of all the past production’s props and costumes. All of this can be yours for only $220.00 (Coach Bus, Overnight Stay, Three Theatre Tickets!) There is limited seat-ing available. Don’t miss this great opportunity! Contact Mr. Reid in the English Dept. or Mrs. Rich-mond in the Arts Dept. for details.

Bayside Athletic council once again hosted its annual leadership trip to To-ronto. Over 100 students took part in this fun filled day spent between Won-derland and going to see the Blue Jays play at the Rogers Centre! Although the Jays experienced an unfortunate (and rare!) loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, we still had a great time with our BSS family. If you missed out this year, be sure to sign up early next year!

AP ExamsTwenty-two Students wrote the Advanced Place-ment exams in May. Students wrote Calculus, French Language, Studio Art, English Language and Literature and Biology. An AP exam score of three or higher will earn students a first year university credit in that subject. This is applicable at nearly all universities in Canada and the United States, as well as around the world. Bayside has a strong his-tory of high scores on these exams. If you want to know more about the AP Program at Bayside, con-tact Mrs. Francis.

Book Club

Members of the Red Devils Reading Den had a busy year. Students enjoyed getting together to discuss “student choice” titles (books voted on by members), as well as White Pine titles. Members voted on their White Pine book choice in April and the Bayside consensus was that E.K. Johnston’s The Story of Owen should win. Unfortunately, this title was not chosen by the majority of students who participated in voting nation-wide, but fortu-nately for Bayside, we had our own personal visit with E.K. Johnston. Ms. Johnston spoke anima-tedly to students about what inspires her to write, and shared insights into several of her pub-lished works. Book club members found the writing work shop that she led to be both interesting and inspir-ing.

Most of our book club members are looking for-ward to a new school year that will bring with it the publication of new books by favourite au-thors. We send best wishes to Emily Anderson, Riley Klaver and

Emily Terpstra, long-time book club members who are graduat-ing and moving on to post-secondary adventures. We know you will take your love of read-ing with you.

Learning at Gleaners Food Bank

Students Step up When Disaster Hits

BSS Places 2nd in National Contest

In May, Grade 10 Civics and Grade 9 Geography stu-dents helped sort, stack, pack, and plant (in the or-ganic garden) at Gleaners Food Bank. A big thank you to staff and volunteers for showing us how to take action in our community, and showing us why Gleaners is the greenest food bank in Canada.

Massive wildfires in May triggered the largest fire-related evacuation in Canada's history so thousands of people from Fort McMurray, Alberta, had to flee their homes, schools and workplaces. As Canadians heard the news, everyone wanted to help. Students in Bayside’s Grade 9 Geography class decided to take action.

Students organized the sale of freez-ies, lemonade and homebaking during one week in May. Thanks to their efforts, and the generous do-nations from staff members, fami-lies, and other students, the class far exceeded their initial fundrais-ing goal. In total, they raised five hundred dollars, all of which has now been donated to the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal!

Congratulations students, on showing how to be caring and contributing global citizens.

This year, Bayside Secondary School entered three essays into the national “Turning Points” es-say contest created by the The Learning Partner-ship. This contest offers students an opportunity to write about their own experiences and values; in particular, a moment that changed their lives. Last year, over 14,000 essays were submitted.

It is with great pleasure that we celebrate Kayla Fyfe’s success as she placed second in the Ni-agara Peninsula Aboriginal Area Management Board’s grade eleven category. Kayla’s thoughtful essay is entitled “To This Day.” Kayla’s essay will be published in an anthology. On June 16th, Kayla attended an awards banquet where she read her essay. Congratulations, Kayla!

Athletic Banquet News

Track & Field

Bayside Athletic Council hosted another wonderful “Sports of Sorts” tournament after school on Thurs-day June 9th with a total of eleven teams participat-ing. There were lots of wonderful activities planned and the ath-letes had a great time. The Ban-quet highlighted all of our individ-ual team winners, as well as our major award winners. At the end of the day it truly takes each and everyone of you for Bayside to see the athletic successes it reached this year. Even if you didn’t indi-vidually get acknowledged please know that you are appreciated and needed, and we hope to see you all back out next year giving it all you have!

This season was full of personal bests and suc-cesses. Our team was smaller than it has been in the past, but the quality was as good as ever. Spe-cial mention to Michelle Cormier and Nadia Stin-son who both qualified for OFSAA in two events respectively. Nadia finished out her season in the top ninth spot in the 80m hurdles, while Michelle finished seventh in the high jump. A shout out to Katharine Herron who qualified for the fourth consecutive year in the triple jump, but unfortu-nately couldn’t attend due to being pulled towards her passion for soccer (OFSAA was hosted at the same time). Some athletes worked very hard throughout the winter months, and will be back at it this summer in preparation for cross-country or just overall fitness. If you are interested in this running group over the summer, contact Ms. Bate-man: [email protected] for more informa-tion.

Here are the major award winners:

Grade 9 girl and boy athletes of the year: Michelle Cormier & Nadia Stinson, and Brock AbbottGrade 10: Hanna Fitzgerald & Stuart Lupenette

RugbyThe Sr She-Devils rugby squad capped off a fan-tastic spring season at the OFSAA A/AA Champi-onships in Ottawa. The girls ran their undefeated streak for the year right through to the finals, coming away with the silver medal!! Good luck to the graduates in your future endeavors. To the returning players, we’ve got some hard work to put in next year to make back to OFSAA in Ajax!

The Jr She-Devils also had an excellent spring season in the run up to the Barbarian Cup Provin-cial Rugby Championship held in our back yard at MA Sills fields in Belleville. All of the hard work paid off when the girls captured their third straight championship! Looking forward to making it back next year to Fer-gus.

A special thank you and good luck to three of our coaches, Mr. Ripley, Ms. Robinson and Ms. Tibbs for all of their coaching and expertise shared over the course of their time at BSS. It was greatly appreciated and best of luck in the future.

InterschoolAs a whole this year, the Red-Devils teams were sec-ond to none in the area, winning a total of eight COS-SA regional championships! In the fall we started off strong with Jr and Sr girls rugby, Jr boys soccer and Sr girls basketball. The success carried on through the winter season with Sr girls volleyball and girls swimming. We rounded out our total in the spring, adding the Jr and Sr girls soccer titles. Congratula-tions to all of the teams at Bayside on a very suc-cessful year. If you haven’t been involved and would like to be, come out next year. The coaches are hun-gry for continued success!

The students in the Specialist High Skills Major Manufacturing class at Bayside have had a busy semester. In addition to participating in training sessions such as Fork Lift Operation, Lockout/Ta-gout procedures, Confined Space Entry, CPR and First Aid, students were presented with the oppor-tunity to attempt their Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) Stick Welding Certification (SMAW – FLAT). This test involves welding together two thick piec-es of steel with multiple beads while being moni-tored by a representative from the CWB. Once the weld is completed, it is bent in half using a press. A successful test is not allowed to break or crack. In Canada, all structural welders must be certified, however this same qualification process is also useful for non-structural work. The CWB Ticket is the only nationally recognized welding credential within Canada.

Students started early in the semester practicing for this challenge. They received support from vari-ous course partnerships such as the Loyalist Col-lege dual credit program. Of the fourteen students who attempted this practical test, twelve students successfully met the criteria and will receive their SMAW – Flat welding ticket. This certification is an excellent head start for those students interested in welding and fabrication, as well as a great re-sume builder to help open doors for students inter-ested in careers such as engineering, business, and many others within the manufacturing industry.

More info...Bayside students enjoy a number of benefits by par-ticipating in this program:• a college credit in addition to the secondary

school technology credits.• exposure to college programs which enable them

to make more informed decisions regarding their post-secondary destination.

• an early and clear orientation to college life which includes expectations of adult behaviour.

Concepts to Creations is a Specialist High Skills Major program that provides students with the opportunity to receive concentrated learning and experience in the fields of manufacturing, engineering and design. The program provides “hands on” learning of skills such as welding, machining and computer assisted draft-ing. To discover more, please contact the Guidance or Technology department at Bayside Secondary School.
