Message from the Acting Principal

Even though we all look forward to the Christmas and summer break, not having the students around the playground and learning in class is really something teachers miss. We love teaching and we love our College!

We are situated, as I said in my speech, in a good place with enrolments increasing through our strong marketing and the community knowing our skilled and caring staff.

The achievements of our students and the opportunities available are becoming well known and the College is a place to come to succeed and experience a wide range of opportunities. Opportunities that have been a focus this year have been;- The development of our Equestrian team and their great successes- Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme as part of our camp and service

development- Continuing our Scholarship and bursary program- Christian Education development- Sapphire Study Centre offering Art classes, Circus skills, MTB

Coaching and more to come- Greater student involvement at assemblies.

We have made capital improvements renovating the student’s toilets, new sails over the Junior School playground equipment. Our solar panels have saved us upwards $14,000 or 32 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Our Design & Technology students Declan Harley and Quin Robinson were listed as distinguished achievers also being nominated to exhibit their Design & Technology projects at SHAPE, an exhibition of a selec-tion of exemplary major works from all over the state.Overall results by SCAC Year 12 include many of our students receiv-ing Band 5 or higher. Our high achievers have had an amazing success throughout their time at SCAC.

We thank the Diocese’s generosity in financing the various building projects planned to enhance the educational opportunities for our stu-dents while at the same time making our facilities second to none. It’s been a fun year - most recently the Magical Christmas Jigsaw what a performance from students and staff.

Our Tiny Talent Time has grown. Thank you to the staff who make this program come alive.

Camps and leadership have been a highlight - Duke of Edinburgh, Jindabyne, Light to Lighthouse and the infamous Year 10 Challenge in Sydney are but a few enjoyed by our student.

MTB Championships, the Bega Country Fair have showcased our col-lege and put us on the map. Our sporting trips and representation of SASSA and AICES and beyond have been well worth the long hours in the bus. Many students have represented NSW All Schools in a number of sports.

Exceptional performances in soccer, cricket, AFL, Equestrian and Ath-letics to name a few from a school of just 300 students.Parents led by our P&F and its President Mrs Kirsty Umbers, were able to finance many aspects of your children’s education.- Readers for K-Y1/2- Additions to the library- Improved technology in the theatre- Moo and Two Cafe furniture to name a few.

My wife Karen and I give personal thanks for your warm welcome and even as we now leave for our next venture, your support including us in the life of Bega has been like our second family. This college is truly blessed being here and we will miss it all. God bless all the SCAC community.

‘Best of all, Christmas means a spirit of love, a time the love of God and the love of our fellow men and women should prevail over all hatred and bitterness, a time when our thoughts and deeds and the spirit of our lives manifest the presence of God.

God blessRod Tuynman

We would like to wish Rod Tuynman all the best in moving back to Sydney. It’s been wonderful working with you over the past 18 months. You have developed a uniform change encouraged an amphitheatre, worked on plans for Moo and Two Cafe cover and this will no doubt be fruitful in years to come.

We wish you all the best and don’t forget to call in next time you are in Bega.

Farewell Mr Tuynman

Among the many highlights of our year was our recent participation in the school play “The Magical Christmas Jigsaw”. I’m sure everyone would agree that our youngest students shone like the stars that they are. Prekindergarten also shone with their outstanding behaviour and man-ners at our end of year excursion to Potaroo Palace. We had a mar-vellous day and many thanks to parent helpers Liz Holland and Leah Oates. Thanks also to Mrs Milton who was of wonderful assistance. There are photos below of us meeting Priscilla the echidna and waiting on the platform for the train.2018 has been our biggest class so far with 22 children altogether. Some will be returning to Prekinder next year, many will be attending Kinder-garten in 2019 and sadly we are farewelling a couple of students too. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each family for the privilege of working with their children and also to wish each child all the very best for their future.

Time Talent TimeBy Lisa LouieThis term Tiny Talent Time has delved into the wondrous world of lit-erature and accompanying crafts. Some adventures this term have seen us ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’, learning of ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ and seeing him turn in to a beautiful butterfly, seeing ‘The Rainbow Fish’ share his beautiful scales and asking ‘Where’s My teddy?’ before we enjoyed decorating biscuits for a teddy bear’s picnic.

Wednesday 5th December was our final session for 2018. We enjoyed the story of ‘Wombat Devine’ by Mem Fox where Wombat desperately wants to be part of the Christmas Nativity Play and is found the per-fect role in playing a sleeping baby Jesus. For craft we made beautiful Christmas tree cards to give to our family.Thank you to Richard Arbon, Lisa Milton and their crew for providing us with delicious morning tea each week. Thank you to Ann Schwarze for opening up the Pre-Kinder room for our children to play and ex-plore.

Kindy newsBy Renee LightlyWhat a wonderful year we’ve had together. Thank you parents for your support in the partnership of your child’s Kindergarten education. I hope you enjoy their books and craft coming home and can see their hard work and progress through the year. We had so many tired after our trip to Potaroo Palace, thank you to those who came and helped. And a very big thank you to all who helped clean the classroom on our last day. Your child will bring home a little gift from me. I will keep their writing book at school and pass on to their year 1 teacher. When it is filled it will come home, it will be a treasure to keep. I wish you all a very blessed Christmas and safe travels in the holidays.

Wrapping up 2018 By Yvonne BrownThank you 1/2B for being such a great class to teach this year. Thank you to all the supportive and encouraging parents of 1/2B. We have been busy with end of year activities, concluding our unit on Celebra-tions, cooking for our Measurement unit in Maths, rehearsing for the production, going swimming and making our own bees wax wraps. We would like to thank Kalaru Wax Wrap Co for the very generous donation of a wrap per child for winning the Wednesday nude food competition. 1/2B were very excited to win and to receive our own wrap. Some children are giving theirs away for presents and some have decided to keep them for themselves. We would also like to thank Emily for the two lovely cakes she made for us. What a yummy recess that was!!!! We wish you all a relaxing break from school and a blessed Christmas.

Q fever - vaccination of 10-15 year old children, December 2018

The National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance of Vaccine Preventable Diseases at

the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney, is conducting a study to look at the safety and

effectiveness of a Q fever vaccine in children aged 10-15 years old. We had hoped to give our Bega

Valley children the opportunity to be vaccinated against Q-fever last year, but due to uncertainty of timing

and lack of numbers this did not eventuate. We have that opportunity again next month.

Importantly the only registered vaccine available in the world is QVax, manufactured by CSL. In Australia

it is only licensed for those 15 years old and over. Therefore under current Australian Immunisation

guidelines, children under 15 years old, who are at risk of contracting Q fever, because they live on

farms, near abattoirs or, are children of “at risk” workers are not recommended to be vaccinated.

The main reason for this age restriction is not because of an identified safety risk but because

the initial trials did not include children under 15 years of age, the licensure of the vaccine was

restricted. Vaccinating children, particularly children of farmers or animal breeders, is an important

preventive measure and has not been studied to date.

Dr. Nick Wood, an immunologist from Westmead Kids Hospital has agreed to come to Bega as part of a

trial of Q fever vaccine (QVax) in children. Given our high rates of Q fever and the number of potentially

exposed children in the area, Bega is the ideal place for the trial. Dr. Wood is seeking a total of 10 well

10-15yr olds for the first part of trial. The kids will need bloods to check for Q antibodies prior to getting a

skin test with the vaccine on the 7th of December – these will be done by Dr. Konrad Reardon at BVMP.

Dr. Wood will be here in Bega on the 14th of December to give the first half of the dose of the vaccine,

will review the recipients and give the second half of the dose on Monday the 17th December.

PLEASE NOTE: there are only 3 places left for 13-15 year old kids for Phase 1 of the trial.

If we have more children booked in, another phase will be rolled out in the new year.

For more information and to book your 10-15 year old children to be vaccinated against Q-fever as part

of this important trial, please contact Helen Schaefer as soon as possible on 0429 476 136
