HuaweiFusionStoragehad132-1600GBNVMeSSDcardsacross36(33storageand3storage-ZK)nodes.TheyalsohadafewSAS400GBSSDsinthestorage-ZKnodesbutnothingcomparedtotheNVMecards.It’ssomewhatsurprisingthattheyweren’tabletogeneratemoreIOPSwiththatmanyNVMecardsbuttheywereusing144-10GbEinterfacestoconnectthe21serversdrivingtheIOPStothe36storage/storage-ZKnodes.IassumeHuaweiFusionStoragewasusingtheiSCSIprotocolintheirbenchmarksubmissionandnotNVMeF.Buttherewasnodetailsonthis.InFigure2weexamineSPC-1LRT(leastresponsetime)reportedbySPC.

InFigure2,theFujitsuDX200S4storagesystemcameina3-waytiefor8thplaceata0.22msecLRT.RecallthatLRT,istheaverageIOresponsetimeat10%ofachievablemaximumworkloadforthesubmission.AsfarasIcantelltheFujitsuETERNUSDX200S4isjustamidrangestoragesolution,whichused16GFCconnectionsforhostand(Ithink)FCconnectionsforbackendstorage.Theydidhave128GBofDRAMacrossthedualcontrollersand20-400GBSSDsbutIdidn’tseeanything

InFigure3,thenewLenovoDS4200cameinat3rdplacewith$0.14/IOPSandtheFujitsuETERNUSDX200S4cameinat#5witha$0.21/IOPS.RecallthatlowerisbetterandAFAsystemsdominatethiscategorythesedays,justlikeLRTandIOPS.TheLenovoDS4200used12GbSASconnectionsbetweenthehostandthestorage,sported12-400GBSSDsand16GBofDRAMacrossthetwocontrollers.Butthesurprisewastheir$13.6Kpriceandbygenerating100KIOPS,itseemslikearealsteel.The300KIOPSoftheETERNUSDX200S4atapriceof$64Kalsodoesn’tseemlikeabaddeal.Buttheadded6SSDsintheDX200vs.theLenovoDS4200andtheabilityoftheDX200togenerate3XtheIOPSseemslikeevenbetterasolution.

SignificanceThenewSPC-1resultswereforv3ofthebenchmark.SPCreportstheseresultsseparatelyfromv1,butherewecombineresults.Thedifferencesbetweenthetwoversionsarenotthatsignificantfromourperspectiveandaremoreintheblocksizeusedratherthantheworkloadsbeinggenerated.SeeingNVMeSSDsstartingtoshowupisexciting.TheyarefastbutwhenbehindaniSCSIinterfacethere’sjustnotthatmuchthatcanbedone.ExcelerousingNVMeSSDsandNVMeFshowedover4MIOPSfrom2(small)NVMeSSDsatunder100microsec.Buttheywereusing100GbEandRoCE/RDMA.Someday,wemaystartseeingNVMeFstoragesystemsbenchmarkedinSPC-1andthenwewillseeanotherstepupinIOPSandstepdowninlatencies,untilthenwerelyonFCandiSCSI.Asalways,suggestionsonhowtoimproveanyofourperformanceanalysesarewelcomed.Additionally,ifyouareinterestedinmoreblockstorageperformanceinformation,checkoutourrecentlyupdated(August2017),SANStorageBuyingGuideavailableforpurchasefromourwebsite.2InSCI’sSANStorageBuyingGuidewenowprovidetop30resultsforsomeofourSPCperformancechartsandnew,SCIderived,OLTP,ThroughputandEmailChampionsCharts™forenterprise,all-flash,mid-rangeandSMBclassSANstorage.
