I think, we seldom understand the importance of our body for our spiritual wellbeing. In fact, many of us, if not all of us, think of our body, its needs, desires and urges as the greatest block on our way to holiness. But imagine for a moment if we had no body how we will ever be able to become holy at all. So, our body is not an obstacle but a fundamental necessity for us to be holy. No wonder St. Paul writing to the community at Corinth (our second reading today) urges them/us to “glorify God in their/our bodies”. It is easier said than done. How can we bring glory to God in our bodies?
OUR BODY IS A GIFT OF GOD A fundamental mistake is that we do not know the giftedness of our Body. Our culture with its modern means and products of beauty has succeeded to make us believe that our body is ours and it is up to us to make it beautiful and attractive as we desire.
Anyone with some common sense will know the lies hidden in this commercial culture. If my body is mine, if I have made it, why did I not make it beautiful, attractive and the way I wanted it to be in the first place. Did I decide to make it horrible first and then spend a lot money, energy, time and talent to make it beautiful and ultimately become frustrated with the outcome. To know the truth and to believe in the truth that my body is a free and beautiful gift of God for me is fundamental and the first step on the way to holiness.
THE GIVER OF THE GIFT No stranger gives a gift to another. Gifts are given by the ones who know us, love us and know our needs, likes and dislikes. Now think of God as the one who knows us and our needs. So, the gift of our body is from the God who is deeply in love with us, knows us, and our needs more intimately than we do.
PURPOSE OF THE GIFT: The optimum use of any gift is possible, when we know the mind of the gift giver. If I distance myself or dislike the one who has given me a gift I may not like the gift, or I may not use the gift at all or even I may go to the extent of misusing it. So, knowing God’s purpose to give, the gift of my body becomes non-negotiable. In my opinion to name a few of God’s purposes for the gift of my body……
My body is the proof of God’s unconditional love for me.
This gift reveals God’s glory, goodness and beauty.
Through this body God wants me to enter in a deep relationship with Him.
This gift is to enable me to experience the joys and sorrows of life.
My body is a wonderful tool to bring out God’s own creative and benevolent nature.
The gift of my body is a means of holiness.
This gift is to bring healing, unity and peace into this broken world.
To embrace the enemy and to forgive the foe.
Please feel free to add your own……
Take a few moments to read and to understand these points. Now ask do I look at my body and treat my body this way? Seeing and taking delight in my body as the gift of God, will help me to give glory to God in my body.
May God bless you, Fr. S. Arul Amalraj, O. Praem

ST. PATRICK PARISH JANUARY 17, 2021 2ND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
On December 8, 2020, the 150th anniversary of the declaration of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church, Pope Francis issued an Apostolic Letter entitled Patris corde (“With a Father’s Heart”). In that beautiful letter, the Holy Father proclaimed a “Year of Saint Joseph” from December 8, 2020, to December 8, 2021. The Apostolic Penitentiary also issued a Decree granting plenary indulgences for this special year.
In the next few weeks St. Patrick Parish will share with the parish a schedule of opportunities for us to celebrate this Year of St. Joseph. Each member of our parish is encouraged to pray the daily Novena Prayer to St. Joseph:
O Saint Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires.
O Saint Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, Our Lord, so that having experienced here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of fathers.
O Saint Joseph, I never weary of contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms. I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Hold Him close in my name and kiss His fine head from me, and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for me. Amen.

ST. PATRICK PARISH JANUARY 17, 2021 2ND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
The season of Lent is a time for us to grow closer to Jesus. It is a
time when we are invited to delve more deeply into this love that
God has for us. To facilitate that growing closer to Jesus, we often
choose to “give up” or “sacrifice” something during the 40 days of
Lent. However, this year, rather than looking for something to
“give up” or to “sacrifice”, why not try something different – why
not go on retreat? Not a retreat where you need to go to a retreat
center, remain in silence for days or to listen to spiritual
presentations. No, this retreat will be one that takes place in the
heart – a retreat in which you will “give up” or “sacrifice” a few
hours each week, in your own space, on your own schedule and
speak with the Lord.
This Lent St. Patrick Parish will offer this retreat opportunity.
Using “Abide in the Heart of Christ, a ten-day retreat with St.
Ignatius of Loyola”, we will journey through Lent exploring and
experiencing the depth of God’s love for us.
How will it work?
Each participant:
• will receive the book, which is the guide for our reflection. The book has ten guides for
reflection that will be followed – 2 per week.
• will sacrifice a few hours a week for prayer – conversation with the Lord. Preferably one
hour a day to read the reflection pages and spend some time in private conversation with
the Lord.
• will keep a private journal of these conversations and what stirs the heart.
• will gather with others “on retreat” for an hour each Monday evening at 7PM in the church
(beginning February 22nd). This time will offer an opportunity to pray together and to
share how the time of reflection has spoken to your heart.
• will attend a 45-minute preliminary meeting on Monday, February 15th – at which time
you will receive the book for retreat.
The cost for each participant is $10, which covers the cost of the book. You will be able to pay the $10
at the preliminary meeting.
