a reverential attitude and a dependence

on the Holy Spirit to guide us in the

selection of hymns and what to say. Our

goal is to design a worship service with

hymns and choice words that blend in with

the sermon of the day. For this to happen,

we need to learn what the scripture

teaches us about worship.

With the above in mind, our course was

structured for four days of training. Our

contents include: (a) Biblical Foundations

of Worship; (b) Worship Design: (c) Historic

Pattern of Worship; (d) Blended Worship;

(e) Basic Structure of Word and Sacrament;

(f) Prayer Using Scripture as Your Partner;

(g) Worship Leadership; (h) Planning a

Christmas Service; and (i) Evaluating

Worship Services.

Thankfully, interaction from course

participants was high as many became

more engaged with the contents as the

lessons progressed over the next few

days. I am also thankful that many

participants have acquired new skills on

worship preparation and leading.

(Note: We are thankful that one of our lay-leaders, Chan Kum Soon, was able to teach a module on “Church Worship” at the School of Pastoral Ministry in Nepal. Kum Soon is our first lay-leader to fully teach a module at SOPM, and we hope more lay-leaders will do the same! Below are his reflections after returning from Nepal – so be encouraged!)

I am most thankful to our gracious God and Provider for making this trip possible. I also wish to acknowledge the support of Ps Kiran Das, Ps Daniel Chua, Ps Peter Teo, and all who have prayed for me during this trip. As scripture has reminded us – we are “one body, but many parts” (1 Corinthians 12:27) – and my trip is made possible because of the help of many.

Indeed, I count it an honour to be able to share with our brothers and sisters in Nepal about “Church Worship.” It was Ps Kiran who requested this module to be taught. That opened the door for me to teach on the biblical foundation of planning and designing worship services; evaluating public worship; and Christian identity formation through worship.

John Piper once said: “Missions exists

because worship doesn’t. Worship is

ultimate, not missions, because God is

ultimate, not man. When this age is

over, and the countless millions of the

redeemed fall on their faces before the

throne of God, missions will be no

more.” If this is true, then teaching our

congregations to properly worship God

may have greater eternal consequences

and significance than most people realise.

When a pastor or worship leader stands

at the front to prompt the congregation

to worship, it is not a free for all. It is

more than just stringing together a few

favourite songs and hoping to impress

others with our vocal ability. It requires Students doing homework

course has been an eye opener for

our pastors and worship leaders in the

area of church worship…”

In his book, Engaging with God, David

Peterson offers this insight: “Vitality and

meaning of worship will not be restored to

Christian gatherings until those who lead

and those who participate can recover a

biblical perspective on their meetings,

seeing them in a total plan and purpose

for his people.”

Let us pray that pastors and worship

leaders will continue to engage and reflect

on the biblical teachings of worship so that

they can plan worship services that glorifies

God and edifies the congregation. Amen!

Chan Kum Soon

This is what Ps Kiran has written to Ps

Daniel Chua in a separate report:

“First of all I would like to say thank you

for your prayers and financial support

for SOPM module that was taught by

Kum Soon from 9-12 Sep, 2019. It has

been a wonderful blessing because we

were able to train 74 students. This is

an increase of 14 more students from

our usual cohort of 60 students. It

included worship leaders from other

churches and some pastors who were

not regular students of SOPM.

Since “Church Worship” is a practical

course, I have encouraged some

worship leaders and pastors to come

for this module so that they can learn

how to lead their church to have

effective worship services. In fact, this

CHURCH

Thank God for the recently-concluded Leaders’ Retreat led by PM Lee and President Jokowi. Thank God that President Jokowi led the way in tackling the recent haze threat resolutely, and that Singapore and Indonesia are maintaining excellent relations. Pray that the younger leaders will strengthen ties in trade and investments, human resource development, tourism, education and culture.

Pray for Sunday Evening Mandarin Service’s (SEMS) outreach concert on Sun 13 by the “Grape Vine Music” group from Taiwan. The performers, though visually impaired, glorify God with their gift of music. Pray that many will come, especially non-believers and that the songs, testimony and message by our intern Ps Li Kang will touch them.

The New Life In Christ (NLIC) class ends this Lord’s Day, 13 Oct. Praise God for two participants who prayed to receive Christ in their lives during the course. Pray that these two ladies will continue to grow spiritually in their daily walk with the Lord. Pray also for the 5 participants in the recently concluded Alpha course who put their trust in Christ.

CARE GROUPS

CGs are a key platform to extend pastoral care to our members. Pray that more members/worshippers will join a CG and that CGLs will ably lead their groups. Pray that the study of God’s Word, praying together and extending mutual encouragement through fellowship will be done in earnest, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Khee Chang, Lai Koon and Jinj Yang would like to express their deep appreciation for the love, kindness and support offered by our Carmel pastors and church friends in helping us cope with the departure of our beloved mother and grandmother.

We felt your love and care exemplified Christ's love and we were comforted that the funeral services had been a good testimony to non-believing family members, relatives and friends.
