Advanced Teaching, Research Facility Raises Bar for Nursing & Healthcare EducationOn February 4, 2010, Florida International

University (FIU) College of Nursing & Health Sciences(CNHS) kicks off a day-long celebration to dedicate itsextraordinary new teaching and research facility on theModesto A. Maidique Campus.

The new $34 million Nursing & Health Sciences(NHS) Building encompasses 115,000 square feet ofspace housing state-of-the-art interactive skillslaboratories, extensive computer suites, specializedtraining, evaluation and study areas, and ample lectureclassrooms. The facility serves all departments of theCNHS: Nursing, Physical Therapy, OccupationalTherapy, Communication Sciences & Disorders, AthleticTraining, Health Sciences, and Health InformationManagement.

CNHS administrators worked closely with the globallyrecognized architectural firm HOK and its lead architect,Yann Weymouth, to create one of the mosttechnologically advanced and innovative nursing andhealthcare teaching facilities in the region.

Dr. Divina Grossman, Dean of the College, remarkedon the excitement generated by the new building, “The technology and resources that come with the newbuilding will foster cutting-edge nursing and healthcareeducation standards and practices, support importantresearch discoveries, and set the benchmark foradvanced academic studies and instruction in nursingand health sciences.”

The Dedication Day Celebration begins with asymposium in the morning, Addressing the Nation’s

Healthcare Priorities Through Research & Leadership. Thisthought-provoking forum features two panel discussionswith leaders from the National Institutes of Health, theU.S. Department of Health & Human Services, as well asdistinguished CNHS alumni. The celebration continues inthe afternoon with a special presentation by Universityand College administrators and dignitaries, a ribboncutting ceremony, tours of the building, and guestreceptions with musical entertainment.

The Gateway to FIU’s Academic Health Sciences Center

The NHS Building stands as the gateway to theUniversity’s highly anticipated campus health center. TheBuilding’s distinct 5-story, 2-wing (Classroom/Lab Wingand Administrative Wing) structure connected by upper-level walkways creates a gateway that straddles theproposed Avenue of the Sciences. This leads to theAcademic Health Sciences Center emerging on thenortheast corner of the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.Next on the landscape will be the new Miami-DadeCounty Health Department building, co-located with theRobert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work,and the Miami-Dade County Ambulatory Care Center.

Grossman continued, “Our new building represents thisUniversity’s commitment to produce highly skilled,culturally competent nurses and healthcare professionalswho will serve our communities. Simulation at Core of Real-World TeachingMock Hospital, Outpatient Clinics and Rehab Center Promote Advanced, Interdisciplinary Instruction and Collaboration

At the educational core of the new NHSBuilding are the third floor SimulationCenter (SimCenter), and the fourth floorRehabilitation Center (RehabCenter).

These Centers feature special labs,technology, and real-life care settings (e.g.hospital stations, exam rooms, residentialvenues) that can be used individually ortogether in a variety of combinations toaccommodate instruction within andacross the College’s disciplines.

The underlying concept is to createfunctionally flexible laboratories thatpromote interdisciplinary collaboration.“The Sim and Rehab Centers allowstudents across the spectrum of ourhealthcare disciplines to learn underdifferent real-life, real-time scenarios, fromemergency/trauma response to at-homerehabilitation care, and to learn theirprofessional role in the context of apatient’s complete healthcare team,”explained Dean Divina Grossman.

The SimCenter emphasizes nursing andcritical care instruction and features state-of-the-art equipment and instruments forhands-on use by students. The technologymakes possible enhanced clinical and

Students Find “Comfort Zone”in New Building

Whether sitting in classrooms in the pursuit of learning, cramming fortests at study carrels, or socializing with friends in the student commons,students in the new NHS Building have many “comfort zones.”

CNHS leaders worked closely with the building’s architects to designthe NHS Building to make their students feel as much at home aspossible. “We had a collective vision to make this a student-centricbuilding,” said Dean Divina Grossman. “Our students are the heart of theCollege. We wanted to create a comfortable, calming learningenvironment that would be socially welcoming and inviting as well asacademically progressive and replete with advanced education tools andresources.”

Students are already taking advantage of the countless seating areasthroughout the building, such as comfortable chairs, sofas, lounges andbenches where they can congregate, pore over notes from the latestchapter in their text books, or even take a well-earned nap between, notthrough, classes.

Other “student-friendly” features include:•Student Activities Center•Student Services Center•Student commons area, café and patio•PhD carrel room•Student lockers

critical thinking training by incorporating the latest cutting-edgesimulation, digital imaging projection and closed circuit monitoring,and web-based technologies. Highlights include:

• Basic Nursing Lab: a real-size mock-up of a hospital unit, with 15 adjoining patient beds laid out around two centralized nurses stations.

• 8 Simulation Rooms: individual patient areas, including high-techsimulated patient mannequins and full complement of diagnosticequipment designed to simulate an operating room, critical care unit, emergency room, neonatal/pediatric care unit and primary care clinic settings.

• 3 Control Rooms: for operating computerized patient care scenarios and monitoring students’ progress across all simulation rooms through closed circuit video and recording equipment.

• 2 Debriefing Rooms: where instructors and students can review, discuss, and evaluate student performances from the day’s simulations.

The RehabCenter complements the critical patient care andtreatment capabilities of the SimCenter. The flexible design of theRehabCenter labs allows for a variety of uses and training scenariosby the Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, CommunicationSciences & Disorders and Athletic Training departments. The labs of the RehabCenter include:

• Activities of Daily Living Lab • Neuromusculoskeletal Lab• Audiology Lab • Rehabilitation Lab• Gait Analysis Lab • Speech & Language Skills Lab• Pediatric Lab • Therapeutic Activities Lab

Gaumard SimFamilyPatient simulators being utilized in the NHS Building include the Gaumard SimFamily ofFive: mother, father, two children and newborn patients. Patient simulators are used in theinstruction of adult, pediatric, neonatal and advanced patient care. The SimFamily of Fivewas donated by Gaumard Scientific, Inc., developers of interactive computer-operatedadult and pediatric patient mannequins used in healthcare education.

The new NHS Building was officially LEED registered when construction began, and ison track to achieve Silver LEED certification, making it the first LEED-certified building inthe University’s history.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a third-party certificationprogram and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction andoperation of sustainable green building and development practices.

“This new building will not only be one of the most advanced and dynamic nursingand healthcare education and research facilities in the region, but also a successfulexample of the University’s growing commitment to environmental awareness andpreservation,” commented Dr. Divina Grossman, Dean of the College.

Among the design “eco-highlights” of the new NHS Building is Miami’s very first“Green Roof.” From the south lobbies of the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors, you can look outthe window and see the low-maintenance “xeriscape” grass and vegetation planted onthe roof of the 2nd floor corridor. In addition to its aesthetics, the “Green Roof,” whichwill only be sustained from natural rainwater, will help insulate the corridor below andabsorb the heat of the sun’s rays.

Other eco-friendly features of the NHS Building include:

• Prevalence of windows lets natural light illuminate classrooms and offices.

• Occupancy and daylight dimming sensor lighting in classrooms and offices helps lower energy consumption.

• Sunrise/sunset timers and sensors manage landscape, building exterior and lobby lighting operations.

• Insulated-laminated glass windows, metal shades and light shelves cut solar loads.

• Energy recovery systems capture energy from cool and dry building exhaust air.

• Variable flow water and air systems are used in the building during off-peak times.
