 Hughes is not showing us a false perception; rather he is revealing the beauty beneath the

distractions. In Hughes case, the distractions of real time--the age, wear, and wrinkled lines of change

and growth. That is what we might see in a portrait or painting. Thus, Hughes leaves us with a literal,

stripped version of perceived realty, and more importantly, beauty.
