INTRO TO CLIMBINGAges 16+ yrs (13 yrs if signing up with an adult)

This introductory course teaches the skills needed to climb and belay

safely in an indoor climbing environment. Par cipants will learn about the gear and techniques to safely top-rope climb; including harnesses, ropes, e-in knots and the belaying procedures needed to take the belay

test. Basic climbing movement technique will also be covered.

Successful comple on of this course is required to be a belayer.

provide children 10 years of age and older with the necessary skills

CONSERVATION OUTDOOR RECREATION EDUCATIONAges: 10 yrs +

The Conserva on Outdoor Recrea- on Educa on (CORE) program is

designed for individuals wishing to obtain their fi rst B.C. resident hun ng licence. It is off ered through a partnership agreement with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Opera ons and the Bri sh Columbia Wildlife Federa on (BCWF).

The program is useful for anyone interested in outdoor recrea on, wildlife and fi rearms safety. The successful comple on of the program is required for B.C. residents at age 18 or over who wish to obtain a B.C. resident hunter number card, and a fi rst B.C. resident hun ng licence.The BCWF is responsible for CORE program administra on, the keeping of graduate records and the public availability of the CORE examina ons through a provincial network of cer fi ed CORE examiners.

Workplace Emergency First Aid (also known

as Occupa onal First Aid Level 1 or OFA 1) is a

hands-on interac ve 1 day course that teaches

workers how to deal with the most common

workplace fi rst aid emergencies. The Workplace

Emergency First Aid course includes adult

CPR, choking procedures as well as emergency

scene management, dealing with shock, spinal

injuries, minor wound management, major

bleeding, internal bleeding, poisons and minor

burns. Students will also be trained to use an

Automated External Defi brillator.

The Red Cross Workplace Emergency First

Aid program is recognized by WorkSafe BC as

equivalent to the OFA Level 1 program.

choking, airway and breathing emergencies and

preven on of disease transmission.

The JLC is a place for young people ages 8 to 12 to learn about lifesaving

Canadian Swim Patrol program, Bronze Star and developing leadership

Assistant Water Safety InstructorPrerequisites: 15 years old and Red Cross Swim Kids 10 or equivalent

The Assistant Water Safety Instructor Course (AWSI) is a prerequisite to the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course. The Assistant Water Safety Instructor Course covers the foundation of instructional skills including teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback.

Candidates are evaluated during 8 hours of assistant teaching and through individual study assignments.

Upon successful completion of the Assistant Water Safety Instructor

Course, candidates are certifi ed as Assistant Water Safety Instructors,

which enables them to co-teach the Red Cross Swim programs under the supervision of a fully certifi ed Water Safety Instructor. Once

certifi ed, Assistant Water Safety Instructors have two years to become

on how to eff ectively apply the information learned in the Assistant

Water Safety Instructor Course to the Red Cross Swim programs.

development, drills, and corrective strategies.

Candidates apply their teaching skills and knowledge during 12 hours

Originally opened as the Prince Rupert Civic Centre on October 16, 1971, the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre has off ered a place for the community to live and play actively since its inception. With the Civic Centre’s re-dedication to Jim Ciccone and his family on February 9, 1996, it continues its tradition of steadfast dedication to Prince Rupert and all of its visitors by supplying quality facilities for community activities. Facilities include the Russell Gamble Gymnasium, Dick St. Louis Auditorium, Activity Rooms , Pottery Room, Lapidary Room, Arts & Crafts Room and an Ice Arena.

The Earl Mah Aquatic Centre is dedicated to Earl Mah, a life-time member of the community of Prince Rupert. Earl Mah was the fi rst Chinese-Canadian born in Prince Rupert and a respected volunteer, businessman, and city Alderman. The facility opened its doors to the public on March 6, 1982. The Aquatic Centre provides a place for individuals and families of all ages to enjoy themselves.
