Finding joy in many diverse interestsIf Charles Wiebe could sit down with
his younger self and pass along some advice, it would be to “always take the time to enjoy the fruits of your efforts and every positive thing that is happening around you.”
At 56 years old, that is exactly what he is doing.
Wiebe was raised in Abbotsford and has been a licensed realtor for 25 years, specializing in commercial real estate. He is the immediate past-president of the Abbotsford Arts Council, director at The Reach Gallery Museum, president-elect of the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board and committee member of Abbotsford’s Park Recreation and Culture Committee.
Over the years he has also served
many non-profit organizations in Abbotsford.
“I feel the need to give back to my community and be a part of making our community an even better place to work, play and live,” he says. “The City of Abbotsford awarded me last year with the Order of Abbotsford for my work in the community, especially in the arts.”
Wiebe has performed in many musical theatre shows with Fraser Valley Stage (FVS). In 2006, FVS competed in the International Gilbert
and Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England, with amateur theatre troupes from around the world. Wiebe won for Best Supporting Actor at
the festival, an achievement he says he will be proud of forever.
“Theatre is hard work that takes creativity, discipline and dedication,” he says. “The
emotions you feel performing in front of an audience are uniquely remarkable.”
From theatre performances to stand-up comedy, and working in the real estate market, Wiebe lives a well-
rounded life and says it’s the accumulation of such diverse things that bring him joy.
When he was a kid, Wiebe had dreams of becoming an airline pilot, and to this day he is still fascinated with aircraft and rarely misses an airshow in Abbotsford.
His final piece of advice for that young boy, and something he keeps in mind to this day, is that age is just a number and one to never fear.
“Be guided by how you feel, not your age, and celebrate when you have reached another higher number in age, because quite frankly, the alternative is that you’re not here to celebrate anything.”

Roses, tulips and needlesSitting around with friends one summer night, I was asked what brings most patients into the office to
see me during the summer. With a big grin on my face, I said, ”The rough-and-tumble sport of gardening!” Yes, believe it or not, gardening can
be as hard on the body as other sports like soccer, tennis, and golf. Just watch all the moves a weekend gardener makes: bending, kneeling, twisting, lifting, and pulling, just to name a few.
In spring, we start on the garden and the lawn with cleaning up the debris, getting rid of the moss, and stirring up the dirt to get to the nutrients winter has hidden. Repeated bending is hard on the lower
back, raking stresses our hips through one-sided movement, and anyone with knee injuries is only going to aggravate their joints kneeling down to plant those flower bulbs. So before the flowers are even blooming, we already need to visit the acupuncturist to get help.
At that time of year, I commonly see weekend gardeners come into the office with pain in the buttocks and legs that we call sciatica. With
all the bending and lifting that we do getting our gardens growing, we create pressure on our low back muscles and our hips or gluteal muscles, which get tight and tense and cause pain. We can call these micro injuries. Normally caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve, this pain can be more in the hip area or shoot down the leg to the calf muscles. Acupuncture and massage can help to reduce the tension on the muscles and take pressure off the nerve so we can start to move again without pain.
Once the flowers are out, we may need to visit the acupuncturist regularly so we can continue to have a beautiful garden that birds and bees visit, and relax in the garden with a special drink and enjoy the fruits of our labour. Pulling weeds can cause pain in our wrists, elbows, and other joints. We are performing repetitive motions that tighten up our forearm muscles and create tension in our shoulder muscles, so now our whole arm aches.
So what is acupuncture and how can it help?
Acupuncture is a traditional
healing system perfected by the Chinese hundreds of years ago that explains how our body is made up of pathways called meridians through which energy flows. Where there is a blockage of energy and blood, pain is the result. Think of a garden hose: normally, water flows freely through the hose, but when the hose is kinked, water cannot flow through effectively. Acupuncture helps to remove the blockage in the meridians and brings in a better supply of blood so the body can heal. As nutrient-rich soil enables our flowers and
plants to thrive in the garden, acupuncture improves the body’s circulation so that our muscles can heal more effectively and we do not have to suffer with pain.
Throughout the gardening season, remember you don’t have to suffer to keep your yard looking beautiful. Work hard, yes—but visit your acupuncturist and massage therapist to keep your body feeling good so you can keep those flowers blooming.

Rolling stock markets are a test of faith for even the most stalwart of investors. Such tests occur regularly, but seldom with as much incessant and ruthless brutality as
in the recent past. But even for those with nerves of steel, the turbulent markets of 2008 shed light on the importance of maintaining a disciplined investment strategy.
Resist getting emotional when markets get volatile. Remember, market volatility is an intrinsic part of investing and the rise and fall of the markets is
natural over time. A decline is always followed by recovery and growth. The real danger of panic selling in a declining market is that it converts a temporary paper loss in investment value into a real financial loss for the investor.
Successful investing is a long-term commitment and requires that investors stay invested through good times and bad times alike. Over time there will be periods of stock market declines, but overwhelming historical evidence suggests that equity markets give investors the greatest possibility for long-term growth in asset value and percentage return on their investments, far superior to any other kind of
investments.Be prepared to discount media
dramatization of the daily financial fluctuations in the market. The “worst case scenario” of any event tends to dominate short-term news coverage, speculation rises and emotion often overrides reason.
Volatile times in the market are good times to review the diversification of the investments in your portfolio and your asset allocation strategy. The questions to ask are: Have any fundamentals changed to affect the underlying quality and intrinsic value of my investments? Has my ability to tolerate risk changed and as a result, should the asset allocation be re-balanced?
Investors in a down market often go to the sidelines and neglect to take advantage of strategic investment opportunities. Dollar-cost averaging is one way to lower your cost on existing investments. By regularly investing, regardless of market conditions, the investor takes advantage of downturns in the market and reduces the average share cost over time. The other opportunity is to go looking for quality investments whose price has been dragged down by an overall market decline but whose business value and future prospects are expected to be good.
Stay in touch with your Financial Advisor. He or she is familiar with your
personal situation andcan provide the counsel you need.
Investing in volatile times takes some discipline. But history has shown that the investors who most successfully emerge from turbulent times are those who don’t try to time the markets, who keep emotions in check and refuse to let them overrule their long term-perspectives and who realize that, over time, investors who have appropriately well-diversified portfolios of stocks, bonds and cash – and are willing to accept reasonable risk – are most likely to succeed.
