Christmas time is upon us once again and it’s a great time to learn the art of making your own wine and beer.  In response to this growing hobby The Fine Vine is well-stocked with a fabulous selection of over 500 different varieties of wine and beer to craft.  Established as a family business in 1997, The Fine Vine quickly became Central Alberta’s premium supply store for the hobby vintner and brewer. For winemakers the selection is vast, whether you prefer a dry or sweet white, a fruity mist wine or a big bold dry red, there is something for everyone.  Premium red kits often come with grape skins adding much more body, flavour, and colour to the wine, just as it is done in a winery.    “The industry has come a long way over the years,” says Paul, owner / manager of The Fine Vine.  “The juice in our premium kits come from well established vineyards, the same vineyards that produce popular commercial wines.”    The savings are huge as the cost per bottle is a mere $2 - $5 for great wine.  Add to this, it only takes 4-8 weeks to produce 30 bottles of wine, although ageing  is always beneficial to the finished product. Craft beer brewing is currently growing in popularity.  It is clear to see when walking

into a tap house or liquor store lately how diverse beer lovers’ tastes have become.  The Fine Vine offers a great selection of almost any style of beer you can think of.  These kits are very simple to make and can be adjusted or customized to your taste.    Paul says, “…for example,  if a brewer wanted to make a very hoppy I.P.A., just purchase one of our I.P.A. kits and we’ll show you how to add some extra hops to liven it up even more.”  Making your own beer at home truly is a craft, and if the customer would like to go beyond the kit, The Fine Vine is there to help. Have an idea for your own craft brew?  Paul can help you create your own style whether it be a nice light Cerveza or a Hoppy Chocolate Roasted Porter.  One batch of beer will make approximately 5 ½ cases at a cost of 50-60 cents per bottle. The Fine Vine doesn’t only cater to the home wine or beer maker.... they also offer a great selection of giftware for any wine enthusiast... Wine savers, chillers, cork tops, decanters to name just a few, and novelty items such as wine games, wine charms, and cheese boards.  Since cooking and wine go hand in hand, The Fine Vine even offers its own brand of delicious hot sauce and wing sauce. While welcoming new customers to this hobby,

Paul, Mavis, and Frank would also like to thank all of their regular customers for their loyalty over the past years and wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas… Cheers!Read more about the craft of wine and beer making and see the selection online atwww.thefinevine.com

the company has followed technical innovation and trends expending into gaming, arcades and retail sales. Retail sales now primary focus on sales, and service, of home entertainment and decor. “We believe in selling a really good quality product at a reasonable price. Season’s Best atCash Casino

By Kathleen Raines

Whether or not a winter getaway to Las Vegas is in your travel itinerary, there is a great casino option right here in Red Deer that offers entertainment choices every day (and night!) of the week. With its seemingly endless array of bright fl ashing lights and bells, Cash Casino has a festive atmosphere year round. But there’s always something new to appeal to visitors, especially during this holiday season. While many regular patrons have their favourite slot machines, there are new games arriving on a regular basis. Check out the new Cash Crib table and the twenty four hour poker room. Cash Casino offers poker tournaments to suit every player level, including beginners. The casino restaurant, newly rebranded as Mai Thai, offers a Thai and western menu including breakfast service starting at 10 a.m. daily. Planning and attitude are the keys to an enjoyable casino outing. Plan your games, plan your budget, plan to win and — perhaps most importantly — plan to have fun! There is so much more than gaming to give Cash Casino patrons a chance to pace their visit and maximize their fun quota. Daily drink and meal specials are best enjoyed while taking in the sporting events on the big screen, and there are regularly s c h e d u l e d entertainers on

the stage.Speaking of plans, Marketing Manager Greg Tisdale is busy putting the fi nishing touches on the plans for Cash Casino’s New Year’s Eve party. Entertainment will be provided by Wakeup Starlight, a Calgary-based folk rock band whose stylings promise “the looseness of Dylan, and the happy stomp of  Paul Simon  back in the S&G days.” There will be party hats and favours, and of course champagne to set the mood for the expected full house crowd, and everyone will be hoping their name is called as the winner of the $2015 cash draw. The staff at Cash Casino have their own holiday excitement to look forward to. For several years now they have participated in the Adopt-a-Family program, committing to help fi ll the wish list of a Red Deer family in need at Christmas. Greg says the casino often takes on one of the larger families, and all the staff get involved: those who love to shop head out with the family profi les and wish lists, while others

take on the task of gift wrapping and delivery. Gift cards for food and practical items are always included.Remember Cash Casino when you are planning your holiday entertainment, whether a team, work or friend outing. They are easy to fi nd at 6350 67 Street, and there is lots of free parking. Season’s Best from everyone at Cash Casino!

(MS) Traditions vary from family to family, but many families share a love of holiday songs and carols at this time of year. Many notable performers have lent their voices to timeless classics or created entirely new songs that have gone on to become perennial favorites. Every year new singers showcase their talents with Christmas releases, and 2014 is no different. Holiday albums available this year include country artists’ collaborations, a carol collection from a singer-songwriter and a surprise swing-jazz release from an actor and voiceover artist.• Grammy-winning vocalist Michael W. Smith

teams up with a bevy of country music greats on his “Michael W. Smith & Friends: The Spirit of Christmas.” Popular artists Lady

Antebellum, Jennifer Nettles, Little Big Town, and even U2’s Bono appear on this album, which features an orchestral fl avor. The album is Smith’s fourth holiday release.

• Those looking for another Christmas album to freshen up their collections can look to “Sings Christmas Carols” from Mark Koselek. The singer-songwriter and frontman for the band Sun Kil Moon lends his baritone and guitar chops to several classic Christmas carols, including “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” and “The First Noel.”

• Seth MacFarlane may have Oscar and Grammy nominations to his name, but soon he will have a Christmas album to his credit as well. MacFarlane recorded “Holiday for Swing” during the holiday season last year. The release follows MacFarlane’s critically acclaimed musical debut, “Music Is Better Than Words.” The actor collaborates with Norah Jones, Sarah Bareilles and others on the tracks, which have a jazz-blues feel.

In case you happened to miss the release of the variety of Christmas albums last year, choose among “I Wanna Go Surfi n’ With Santa,” by the Hollyberries; “Horror Xmas,” from The Misfi ts; “Snow Globe,” by Erasure; or “On This Winter’s Night,” from Lady Antebellum.

Forget about going all the way to Las Vegas to see a Hollywood-ized version of a pawn store; Red Deer has a truly authentic one right here. Meet Red Deer’s pawn stars at Big Gold Pawn Shop: owners Trevor and Kim; and store manager Heather. The TV-show has popularized pawn stores in recent years with their penchant for both good deals and deal-making.“We could make a TV-show right here,” laughs the affable owner, Trevor. “Only ours would actually be real.” Big Gold Pawn Shop is a bright, welcoming store situated on Red Deer’s north end. The establishment allows individuals to pawn, or loan, items to the store for money; which, if not paid back, then belongs to the store. Individuals can also simply sell an item if they so wish. Big Gold offers plenty of previously owned items at discounted prices, but they also offer many brand new products, such as clothing and jewelry. One of the most impressive features of Big Gold Pawn Shop is their showcase of Royal Canadian Mint coins. The store has a large assortment of coins commemorating different events or people, any of which would make a great Christmas present for the coin collector in your life. Some of the coins even feature Venetian glass and Swarovski crystal.

Big Gold Pawn Shop also has the largest selection of gold and silver bullion. Some are big enough to give your arm a work-out when you pick them up. Big Gold pays the highest prices in Red Deer for gold, silver and platinum. They sell lots of high quality jewelry, half the price of retail, and will buy gold and silver jewelry in any condition.“It’s a great time to buy gold or silver,” Trevor says, referencing the market. “Gold is currently at a four-year low while silver’s at a fi ve-year low.”Big Gold Pawn Shop always has a great second-hand selection featuring tools and electronics, including PlayStation 4 and Xbox One machines as well as a

large library of games. Laptops are another big seller, all of which get factory cleaned before resale. For aspiring musicians Big Gold is also the place to go for any musical instruments. There is a whole wall dedicated to guitars, some made by big names like Gibson and Fender. All second-hand products are quality items with prices a fraction of what you would have to pay at a retail store over the Holidays. The owners of Big Gold Pawn Shop pride themselves in running a very clean business. To pawn or sell anything you need two government issued IDs. Big Gold has had over 20, 000 transactions – 15, 000 pawns and 5000 purchases – and in all that time only 17 items have had to be confi scated.“It happens very rarely to us but we are always happy to help people look for and recover their stolen property,” Trevor says, noting that if they do unknowingly take stolen property the RCMP charges the offender who brought it in.“We work very closely with the police. We love them and they love us,” Trevor says. “It’s nice to help someone get their stolen stuff back. That makes it all worthwhile.”Visit Big Gold Pawn Shop at 7110 Gaetz Avenue North, or give them a call at 403-348-1200.

Life can unravel in an instantBy Cindy Oliver

It has been one year since my son’s birth and I can’t help but think back on all the events that have happened in the last year. At 22 weeks pregnant, I went to the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre because something didn’t feel right. A few hours later, I was fully dilated. This meant two weeks in the Red Deer hospital on bed rest before they would even think about transferring me to Calgary or Edmonton where the neonatal intensive care units (NICU) are equipped to provide medical attention to a baby born so early. I was so relieved when I was fi nally transferred to Calgary a week early. On December 4, 2013, with a full neonatal team standing by, August Christian was born in Calgary, weighing 1 lb. 14 oz. I didn’t get to hold him and I didn’t even get to look at him for more than a few seconds because the neonatal team took him and started life saving measures. By the time I was able to see him later that evening, he had tubes and wires coming out everywhere.Three days later, I held my baby for the fi rst time. As you can imagine, August’s birth was not a happy moment; it wasn’t fi lled with joy and wonder — it was terrifying and heartbreaking and sad. But the minute

I had my baby in my arms I again felt in my heart what I had felt during those 19 days lying in the hospital bed, that he would be okay. The day I was discharged from the hospital, I checked-in to Ronald McDonald House® Southern Alberta. Being single, I was going through this ordeal without a partner so having people around that could empathize was very comforting. Each night when I would go back to the House for supper we would talk about what roller coaster we were riding that day. We gave each other strength and encouragement. Due to our time spent in the hospital I couldn’t work, causing a fi nancial strain. Being able to stay at Ronald McDonald House lifted most of that burden because I didn’t have a big hotel bill to contend with. Every night I got back to the House for dinner, there was a hot meal waiting that had been cooked by volunteer groups. I can’t even begin to explain how amazing it was to not have to worry about buying groceries and cooking after a long day at the hospital. I don’t think I would have eaten most nights. By mid-January, August was 3 lbs. 3 oz. His breathing issues were under control and on February 10, we were transferred from Calgary to the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. Two weeks later, August and I went home.I spent the fi rst few days in a state of shock at all that had happened and disbelief that he was actually home and I had him all to myself. He had been home for two weeks and things were going really well; we were getting to know each other and getting into a nice routine when disaster struck the day after his baby shower. His chest was not rising and falling and when I moved his arms they just fl opped. I called 911, who directed me to start CPR and rescue breathing. It wasn’t until paramedics arrived and suctioned out his airway that he started breathing again. We ended up back in the hospital for fi ve days to monitor him. I took August home

for the second time, and fi ve days after getting him home, he quit breathing again. I immediately started mouth to mouth and chest compressions and called 911. The paramedics had a tougher time getting him back but they managed while we were on our way to the hospital. After several more days of observation we went home… on his due date! During the second and third stay at the Red Deer hospital, I was sleeping in August’s room with him in order to provide his care as he was only there for observation and my peace of mind. Even though I didn’t need a place to stay, I utilized Ronald McDonald House® Central Alberta for lunch and dinner. It was within walking distance to the hospital and a very nice place to go have a break. The staff and volunteers were very friendly and welcoming and made me feel right at home. Fast forward to a year later, and as you can see August is thriving. He is a very happy, healthy and a BIG boy! He’s over 20 lbs. now and not only sits up on his own, but rolls all over the fl oor. I think he will skip crawling and go straight to walking. He loves food, bath time and he loves it when I sing to him. My wish for the new year is that August continues to grow and doesn’t have any long-term repercussions from being born so early. If you’re reading this letter and are thinking about making a year-end donation to a charity, please consider Ronald McDonald House® Southern Alberta and Ronald McDonald House® Central Alberta. Both Houses rely heavily on community support and donations and must raise 90 per cent of their funding in the community. Your donation to Ronald McDonald House will go a long way, helping people like me have some peace of mind when they’re in such a stressful situation; not just by easing the fi nancial burden, but also easing the emotional stress. On behalf of my precious son August and myself, I wish you a happy and healthy holiday season and New Year.

Heading into her second Christmas season, Nuts for Bolts Etc. owner Jackie Swainson is busy sewing unique fabric gifts and unpacking new, trendy fabric bolts to supply Central Alberta seamstresses. Located on the Swainson farm a few minutes south of Sylvan Lake off Secondary 781, the store features 1,500 square feet of fabric, giftware, and fabric items sewn by Jackie and her three daughters who are partners in the family business.Nuts for Bolts Etc. got its start online when Jackie, a sewer, became frustrated with the quality and variety of fabric choices available locally. She discovered Cuddle by Shannon, a line of strong, soft fabrics that she loved to work with, and launched the business to gain access to the fabrics for her own sewing projects. Before long sales reps from fabric companies were seeking her out, and a full range of quilting

cottons were added to the inventory. The store opened in July 2013, with custom built shelves full of current, on trend fabrics – Jackie estimates there are over 1,000 choices in stock, including what is probably the largest selection of Cuddle fabrics in Canada. A full line of notions and AccuQuilt products round out the sewing offerings. Nuts for Bolts Etc. is the only independent Canadian retailer for Carolee New York jewelry, a popular gift item. Sewing and quilting classes are being planned for the New Year, including a Downton Abbey Mystery Quilt.Jackie and her daughters are busy sewing aprons, cushions, stuffed toys and quilts for Christmas shoppers, and welcome you to visit Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., or by appointment. Check out the website at nutsforboltsetc.com to plan your shopping trip or to place an online order.

Throughout the various stages of our lives we face both good fortune and arduous challenges. Under normal circumstances we enjoy the moments of good fortune and meet the challenges head on. There are times however when the challenges can seem almost overwhelming to both ourselves and our families. For those suffering from any of the many phases of Alzheimer’s and Dementia meeting those challenges without support can border on the impossible.Symphony Senior Living’s Moments Neighborhoods have been specially developed to accommodate residents with these conditions with specifi cally designed indoor neighbourhoods that provide homelike environments to help those with memory impairment live fully in the present. As Alzheimer’s and Dementia progress, those suffering from the conditions will begin to live more and more in the moment. Short term memories begin to fade at such

a rate that to live in any other manner is confl icting, confusing and will create frustration and aggression. Residents are often more comfortable “in the moment” as that is the most accessible memory they have. According to Lisa Brush, Symphony Senior Living Chief Executive Offi cer, “Symphony actively assists our Moments residents suffering memory impairment to live fully in the present in a safe secure environment. We also work with families to understand the disease and how they can continue to make meaningful connections with their loved ones. We try to help families to understand and accept their grief and then join their loved one on their journey.”Symphony Senior Living offers the Moments program at their Aspen Ridge location at 3100-22nd Street in Red Deer. (MS) ‘Tis the season to be festive, and that usually means stringing up hundreds of twinkling lights to create a welcoming glow on dark winter nights. Some people view the holiday season as their chance to go all out with regard to decorating their homes with an abundance of lights, infl atable lawn ornaments and maybe even some mechanical fi gures. While these decorations certainly may be symbols of the season, it’s easy to forget just how much energy and resources they consume. A typical strand of lights uses around 300 watts of electricity. Multiply those fi gures by the dozens of strings of lights people use and it’s easy to see how quickly energy usage can add up.In addition to lights, lit candles, animated dolls, wreaths, trees, and scores of imported ornaments contribute to the energy consumption per household. Even so, environmentally conscious individuals need not skip the holiday décor and entertaining. Fortunately, there are various ways to be energy effi cient with holiday décor this season.

• Switch to LED lights. LED lights consume a fraction of the energy traditional incandescent bulbs do. While a standard string of 50 lights

consumes 300 watts, LED sets only consume four watts. This not only saves energy, but also considerable amounts of money over the course of the holiday season.

• Use fi ber-optic decorations. Fiber optic items are lit by one light. The illumination carries through the fi ber optic cables to the entire decoration.

• Use a power strip and timer. Plug decorations into a power strip (be sure to follow the recommended power load for safety) and hook everything up to a timer so lights are not on when no one can see them.

• Check light strands. Always inspect lights for frayed wires and any damage. Frayed lights are less effi cient and pose a considerable safety risk.

• Enhance decorations. Use mirrors and refl ective ornaments to give the appearance of more lights without actually adding more.

• Turn off ambient lighting. Christmas tree lights or the lights framing a picture window should be suffi cient to light up a room. Keep lamps and overhead lighting off while the tree is lit to save money and energy.

• Lower the thermostat. When entertaining, turn the thermostat down a few degrees. Having extra people in your home will raise the temperature. Similarly, heat generated by the oven and other cooking appliances can warm up a home. Don’t waste energy by keeping the heat turned on high.

• Invest in rechargeable batteries. According to Energy Quest, 40 percent of all batteries are purchased during the holiday season. To power those many gifts and devices, use rechargeable batteries which can be used again and again.

• Change your cooking practices. Smaller appliances use less energy. Put those toaster ovens, slow cookers and electric fryers to good use. Only use the oven if you are cooking a large meal.

• Wait until the dishwasher is full. Pack in the dishes from holiday meals, and only run the dishwasher when it is full.

• Reuse items whenever possible. Many items around the house can be put to good use as decorations, holiday servers or gifts. Take inventory of what you have before you go out and purchase new decorations.

(MS)The holiday

season has arrived, and millions of people across the globe will be celebrating Christmas with their families and friends. The following are some interesting tidbits to share with your loved ones this holiday season.

• Each year, more than three billion Christmas cards are sent in the United States alone.

• In 350 AD, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the offi cial celebration date for the birth of Jesus Christ. Many historians and theologians have surmised that Christ really wasn’t born this time of year, thanks to imagery and information from the Bible.

• Christmas carols began as an English custom called “wassailing.” Individuals toasted neighbors to a long and healthy life.

• Despite the common tale that three wise men paid homage to baby Jesus, the Bible never specifi cally calls out a number. Similarly, there’s no specifi c indication that they visited the infant Jesus. Their visit may have occurred when Jesus was older.

• Santa Claus’ modern look was inspired by writings from The Knickerbockers of New York

and imagery from Clement Clarke Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Moore denied authoring the famous poem for 15 years after it was published anonymously, feeling the poem was beneath his talents.

• Santa has his own offi cial postal code. It’s H0 H0 H0.

• The song “Jingle Bells” was originally written for Thanksgiving and not Christmas. People loved it so much that the lyrics were changed to fi t Christmas.

• Christmas trees typically grow for 15 years before they’re cut and sold. This means the trees sold today were likely planted in 1999.• Christmas was not declared an offi cial holiday in the United States until June 26, 1870.

• Before turkey, the traditional Christmas meal served in England was a pig’s head and mustard.

• Male reindeer tend to shed their antlers in the winter. This means Santa’s reindeer are likely female.

• Christ may have been born in a cave rather than a manger. According to the gospel of Luke, the shepherds that helped fi nd shelter for Mary to give birth kept their fl ock in a cave. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built over a cave called the Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born.

• Many people may be less inclined to stand under mistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what “mistletoe” means in the ancient Germanic language. It literally means “dung on a twig,” for the bird who eats the berries and then leaves seeds in droppings to propagate new plants.

• Each holiday season, PNC Wealth Management calculates the costs of the gifts in the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The price index for the gifts went from $12,673 in 1984 to more than $24,000 in 2011. The most expensive gift is the swimming swans.

Christmas tidbitsto put you in the holiday spirit

(MS) The holiday season is meant to be enjoyed with family and friends, but not everyone can make it home to see their loved ones on the holidays. Commitments to work or school prevent some people from heading home for the holidays, and such situations often inspire feelings of homesickness. Holiday homesickness may not fully hit some people until the day of the holiday, when people separated from their families miss both the company of their relatives and the holiday traditions they have enjoyed since childhood. But there are several ways to conquer holiday homesickness so you can still enjoy this festive time of year.

• Make technology work for you. Though you might not be able to sit at the holiday dinner table with your family this holiday season, that does not mean you still can’t lay your eyes on your those closest to you. Arrange to video chat with family members sometime during the holiday. If you’re shipping gifts home, ask your family members to open their gifts during your video chatting session so you can see the reactions on their faces when they open their presents. This can allow you to enjoy the thrill of seeing a loved one open the perfect present, even if you happen to be thousands of miles away as he or she tears off the wrapping paper.

• Volunteer in your community. Another way to combat holiday homesickness is to volunteer in your community. Knowing you’re doing your part to make someone else’s holiday special can make it easier for you to be away from family on the holiday. Whether you feed the homeless at a local shelter, distribute toys at a nearby children’s hospital or visit an assisted living facility and spend time with an equally homesick elderly person, putting a smile on someone else’s face is sure to put a

smile on your own face as well.• Stay true to traditions. If your

family adheres to certain traditions every holiday, then do your best to maintain those traditions. Watch that holiday movie your family always watches or cook that special dish you only enjoy during the holiday season and invite your friends who also won’t be leaving town to join in the fun.

• Participate in community events. Loneliness on the holiday can contribute to feelings of homesickness, so make an effort to celebrate the holiday with your community. Many communities host special holiday events, be it tree lighting ceremonies, parades or local theater performances of classics such as Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol. Participate in these events, which can lift your holiday spirit and ensure you aren’t spending the holiday alone at home.

Holiday homesickness can be a tough pill to swallow, but there are many ways for men and women to enjoy the holidays even if they won’t be able to see their families.

Better Hearing Through Professional Care

Daniel Mulrooney, Offi ce Manager and Hearing Aid Practitioner at Red Deer’s Beltone Hearing Centre, sees the company as being in a unique position. Its 75-year history has established it as the most recognized name in hearing. As well, it achieved a milestone when its Bluetooth-compatible hearing aids took top honors in the Health and Wellness category in the prestigious International Consumer Show in 2011.Beltone developed innovative products of virtually invisible Bluetooth-compatible hearing aids that wirelessly receive sound directly from television, cell and home phones, stereos, personal computers and iPods totally changed the market. It is a rapidly changing world in which, according to Mulrooney, “there is much more awareness of hearing loss. Hearing aids are so small as to be almost barely visible and with the use of Bluetooth and other mobile devices today, there is almost a status to having something in your ear.” For a hearing impaired person, Mulrooney explains, the more distance there is, the more diffi cult it is to hear properly, even for a person with normal hearing. “This is what the new devices eliminate. They stream information through Bluetooth-enabled technology directly to the hearing aid. They enable the hearing impaired to remain in close touch with the world they live in. With these

devices, it is as if people and your electronics are talking directly in your ear.”With the direct link between hearing aids and cell phones, it especially benefi ts persons who travel as it provides both the best quality hearing and allows for hands-free driving and, as a result, the driver does not breaking the distracted driving law.One of the results of the International Consumer Show recognition was through a connection with Apple Inc., Beltone developed an app to let hearing impaired individuals use their iPhones to hear clearly each individual speaking in person at roundtable meetings. Mulrooney also says that there is a direct person to person link through a hearing aid clip-on device or mini-microphone. “This works great when couples are talking while the hearing impaired person is driving and it can also be used if given to speakers at conferences. When clipped on to the speaker, the listener can hear 100% what is said.”These products open up the world for the hearing impaired in a way not dreamed off a few years ago. Mulrooney’s experience has shown that it is often at Christmas family get-togethers that trouble the hearing impaired. “With all the conversations taking place, it is almost easier for them to exclude themselves from the family and retreat to watching television. This is less embarrassing than not

being able to follow some of the family conversations and interactions. ”Mulrooney sees hearing loss resulting in a world that becomes increasingly threatening – a world in which music doesn’t sound as good because hearing loss of with certain frequencies make the music sound weak and distorted. “The music sounds empty but more importantly for the hearing impaired, there is an increasing fear of missing something, of being embarrassed. We are social beings. We want to communicate and we want to talk. If you don’t hear, you are not communicating fully.” For the hearing impaired, there is typically an average of seven years between noticing hearing loss and actually addressing the problem. At fi rst, there is withdrawal such as not attending church, not playing cards, turning up the volume on the television and spending more time alone.”But there is always a fi nal trigger that overcomes the denial of hearing loss and results in seeking professional hearing health care help – this sometimes happens at a family gathering such as Christmas or some other important or signifi cant event. With Beltone, the opportunity is available to discover what improved hearing really can do for your life.

Beltone offers new possibilities for hearing impaired

The Spa Spot, located on Gaetz Avenue North across the street from Rona, knows its showroom is nothing mind b l o w i n g .

That’s not important, says owner Kyle Vendel.“What matters are our customers. That’s our fi rst priority. We don’t believe in renting high profi le showrooms at The Spa Spot. The reason being is that by not doing that, we’re controlling the cost of a hot tub. And we’re controlling the price without sacrifi cing the service.”Known as Northern Alberta’s preferred hot tub retailer, Vendel and his wife Candace started The Spa Spot in Camrose in June 2010 with just two hot tubs in a parking lot. Now they have four locations: Edmonton, Lloydminster, Grande Prairie and Red Deer.Vendel previously worked in the industry, dealing with other companies such as Polar Spas and Dynasty Spas. “I didn’t like the way they did business so we fi gured we’d start our own and run it the way we felt it should be ran. It just boomed from there.”On top of winning numerous customer service awards, an “A” rating on the Better Business Bureau for all their locations, as well as being crowned Dealer of Year from MAAX Spas Industries Corp., The Spa Spot has seen over $10 million in Visa and Mastercard transactions since 2010 with zero chargebacks. It’s something to be proud of, says Vendel, who noted if any customer has a problem, it’s always resolved by The Spa Spot staff. The company prides itself on these customer service policies and so far it’s paid off. Forty per cent of The Spa Spot’s business comes from referrals. This year alone out of the 500 tubs sold, 200 of them came from referrals, explains Vendel.Unbeatable prices make them stand out as well. “I’ve watched people shop for hot tubs in the past and then they’d turn around and leave because the hot tubs that would make them happy are priced too high,” he says. “Many places you go to, they’re showing you hot tubs priced at $24,000 or $19,000. We believe there is no such thing as a hot tub over $14,000.”The MAAX Collection Hot Tubs are top sellers, Vendel notes, adding you don’t fi nd comparable quality tubs anywhere else. They come with Bluetooth, WIFI, LEDs, touch screen controls,

ergonomic valves and a steel frame that won’t rot like the wood ones over time. “It’s our top of the line and sells for $11,999, seating 5-6 people. All other tubs like that sell for $20,000 easily with less warranty.”MAAX started in 1969 in Montreal and built 47,000 hot tubs alone last year. They are the world’s largest hot tub manufacturer and are in the top three companies in the industry, next to Jacuzzi and Hot Spring. A MAAX Spa product can be found in one in fi ve North American Homes. What also makes these tubs stand out is the warranty: they come with a 25-year guarantee on insulation and structure, fi ve years on parts, plumbing and equipment, and 10 years on the acrylic. The durable steel frames make MAAX tubs the world’s only appliance grade hot tubs as well.Vendel encourages customers to bring in any price they want beat on a hot tub.“There’s always a sale going on. Christmas means we’ll be having more but just come in, fi nd the product and we’ll fi nd the sale price for you.”The Spa Spot’s offerings don’t stop there. Stroll through the Red Deer location’s 3,800 square foot showroom and check out saunas, gazebos and other leisure products including handcrafted billiard tables, home bars and game room furniture.Sales on the game tables start to climb during the holiday season, Vendel notes but his

priority is still hot tubs.Christmas also means a special sauna promotion with the purchase of a MAAX 811 hot tub: a free Far Infrared sauna, chicly designed to detoxify, lower blood pressure and increase core temperature among other benefi ts. While there may not be glossy hardwood showroom fl oors and wine and cheese, Vendel says the experience at The Spa Spot in unique and knowledgeable.“When people go to a hot tub store, everyone is trying to sell them all the bells and whistles. The most important thing though is about the hot tub itself and does it work for you? Is it comfortable for you and what you envision? Then our staff let you know about how water care takes place, energy effi ciency, freeze protection, how to know if this hot tub is made for your climate,” he says. “We like a win-win: you win by getting the hot tub you actually want and we win by earning your business so it’s like more of a fair trade.”Every member of The Spa Spot’s staff is sent to the manufacturers’ in the US for product knowledge training and every year Spa Spot staff attends manufacturer training and knowledge testing and Spa Spot takes fi rst place with 100 per cent.  The sales associates in Red Deer, Mitch and Catherine, are passionate and go the extra mile for every client, says Vendel. “They’re just wonderful and all about complete customer satisfaction.”Pop in to see them today!

While most people do not associate agriculture with the winter season, Mike Kostuchenko, parts manager of Future Ag in Red Deer, feels that the holidays provide the perfect opportunity to start thinking about preparations for the upcoming farming year.“Although the harvesting season is now over, we encourage farmers to bring in their combining equipment to Future Ag for an inspection and general maintenance so that it’s ready to go when needed. It’s never too early to start thinking about the upcoming year.”Equipment maintenance is just one of the services offered by Future Ag, which has locations in Red Deer, Rimbey, Olds, Stettler and Coronation. As Central Alberta’s primary full-line Case IH dealership, Future Ag offers a wide variety of farming equipment and parts, as well as services that include repairs and general maintenance. With a number of sales and special offers

taking place until the end of December, farmers will have more than one reason to visit one of the company’s fi ve locations over the next few weeks.“We have a number of great deals on various parts and equipment. Just in time for the Christmas season, we are offering up to twenty percent off on a number of toy tractors and combines, and on various different toy collectibles. Also, our annual oil sale runs until the end of December. It’s a great time for people to drop by and see what we have in store.”For more information on Future Ag’s products and services offered, visitwww.futureag.ca.

Price and quality only get you into the game, it’s the service you provide that wins that game for you. Long term commitments to quality products and exceptional service have been guiding principles for a familiar Central Alberta business that has grown and thrived for over thirty years. Since opening their fi rst car dealership on Red Deer’s North Hill in the early 1980’s, the Gary Moe Auto Group has been an integral part of Red Deer’s business community and a strong supporter of the groups and organizations that make the city and Central Alberta one of the most energetic and dynamic areas in Canada. Much has changed over those thirty years, but that unwavering commitment to the best in sales and service has allowed the company to build a fl exible and responsive relationship with their customers that takes advantage of the amazing advances in automotive technology, design and maintenance that have occurred over the last decade.Today’s Gary Moe Auto Group is almost unique in Red Deer as it operates completely under local ownership. Gary Moe Mazda and Gary Moe Volkswagen have been recently renovated to provide state-of-the art facilities and experience in both sales and service. The multi-million dollar Hyundai Store in North Red Deer, opened in 2013, includes the latest in innovation and technology to make purchasing and maintaining your vehicle convenient and stress free. The full line of vehicles offered through the Gary Moe Auto Group includes some of the most outstanding products in the industry. Gary Moe Hyundai cars and SUVs are consistently rated as some of the best in the industry, provide a high level of content for an affordable price and are backed by one of the automobile industry’s longest warranties. When it comes to Gary Moe Mazda, there are affordable, fuel-effi cient vehicles and there are vehicles that offer thrilling performance. Rarely do the two ever converge, but using their revolutionary SKYACTIV technology and the newly announced Unlimited Mileage Warranty, Mazda has made it a tradition of producing vehicles that combine both traits to perfection. Gary Moe Volkswagen, the newest member of the Gary Moe Auto Group family, provides German styling, engineering and dependability at a great price. So whatever your requirements are in a car or an SUV you’ll fi nd whatever you’re looking for in a Gary Moe vehicle. With technology playing an ever expanding role in our lives, the Gary Moe Auto Group continues to strive

in providing customers with the very latest in 24/7 access to vehicles and service through the Group’s web site, on Facebook and through Twitter. “We want to provide our customers with up to the minute, process driven information,” says Dean Moe. “Our variety of manufactures and vehicle selections appeals to a wide range of demographics. And we need to keep up with the variety of ways our customers search for those vehicles.” It’s even possible to book a service appointment through their web site and to receive phone, email and text updates on service appointments, parts orders and vehicle searches. “It’s important for us to remember who drives our business,” adds Moe. “Our customers don’t expect us to be perfect but they do expect us to fi x things when they go wrong and to us that relationship with our customers is what makes all that possible, so we will continue to work very hard to make their experience outstanding in every way.”The Gary Moe Auto Group can trace its roots back to Gary Moe Motors; Gary Moe’s fi rst used car dealership opened in South Red Deer in 1985. In 1988 he and his wife Susan opened a General Motors Passport International franchise selling General Motors and Isuzu products. Then in 1991 when General Motors launched the Saturn, they got in on the ground fl oor as the only Saturn dealer in Central Alberta and one of seven across the province. In July 2002 they opened Gary Moe Mazda on Red Deer’s Gasoline Alley and in October 2003 Gary Moe Hyundai was welcomed into the Group. GM discontinued the Saturn line of vehicles in 2009, but in 2010 Gary Moe Volkswagen became a fundamental cornerstone of the Group. The tradition of

used car sales also continues through the Gary Moe Auto Group with each location offering an excellent selection of pre-owned, reconditioned vehicles. Commitment to family, business and place remain important cornerstones in life to Gary Moe and his sons Dean and Eric. All born and raised in Red Deer the Moes believe strongly in the quality of life and the business potential of Central Alberta. “We love living here,” says Eric Moe. “There isn’t a better place in Canada to live and the business environment has allowed us to form lasting relationships with the people we serve”.“But as much as our business is important to us,” says Dean Moe. “I think that the relationships we have been able to build with our customers over the years are equally important. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our product

and the service we offer and we’ve seen by the amount of repeat business we do that our customers feel the same way. We also look to our customers’ suggestions for ways to improve our service and we are now offering off season tire storage and free seasonal change-overs for our customer’s rimmed summer and winter tires. It’s an exciting time to be in the car business,” he adds. “All three of our lines have shown tremendous improvements over the last few years and there are a number of new developments on the horizon.”The Moe family and Gary Moe Auto Group are an integral part of the Central Alberta business community and have and continue to give back to the community that has meant so much to their success. They continue to be strong supporters of the Red Deer SPCA and other local charities, as well as many local sporting events and teams. “It’s important to appreciate how fortunate we are to be able to live where we do and to be able to do what we do,” says Gary Moe. “And with that success comes a responsibility to give back to your community. This Christmas we’ll also be running a ‘Fill Up an SUV’ promotion at each location to collect items for the Red Deer and District Food Bank and their Christmas programs.”More information on the Gary Moe Auto Group and their products is available on line a www.garymoe.com.Gary, Susan, Dean and Eric Moe along with all the management and staff at Gary Moe Auto Group would like to take this opportunity to thank all their customers for their business in 2014 and to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year in 2015.
