Comox’s Compass Adventure continues to provide a variety of water sport programming for kids but, for the first time, will offer a chance for adults to get their feet wet, too.

“We had lots of parents complain-ing that they couldn’t have the same fun the kids were having,” Compass Adventure’s Stuart Robinson says with a laugh. “So, we decided, ‘Here you go!’”

There will be two Weekend Water Warrior camps, one in April and one in May, offering adults an opportunity to try Hawaiian outrigger canoeing, stand up paddling, catamaran sailing, beach training and relays. A beach BBQ is included, too.

Participants can also try out Com-pass Adventure’s new Astro Starship, an eight-person stand up paddle board.

“It’s brand new,” says Robinson. “I’m sure there’ll be a lot of swimming involved, a lot of falling in, but it’ll be a lot of fun for sure.”

Meanwhile, the Ocean Adventure Camp, (for ages seven to 16), is a week-long camp which includes sailing,

The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday through-out July and August. Registration is at the Comox Recreation Centre. Day passes are available but must be obtained directly through Compass Adventure.

The Paddle Surf Camp, (10 years and up), features Hawaiian outrigger canoe adventures, stand up paddle board training and the Astro Starship. This camp runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday with start dates throughout July and August. Registration is at the Comox Community Centre.

Robinson notes Compass Adventure coaches are all highly trained and ensure kids have fun on the water while learning to stay safe. For more information, visit www.compassadventure.ca.

Pacifi c Pro Dive and Marine Adventures not only offers underwa-ter encounters with Comox Valley marine life; it also provides above-water adventure like marine and eco tours.

Bill Coltart opened his business in 1994, running diving and snorkeling tours off Hornby Island. He then opened a retail store in Courtenay three years later, and has continued to expand the busi-ness over the years.

“We found that a lot of people wanted to do other activities, such as marine tours and whale watching, and (they wanted) water taxi services,” Coltart explains, noting Pacifi c Pro Dive offers a selection of marine and eco tours, including trips to Desolation Sound.

Last summer’s addition to the fl eet — a rigid hull zodiac, previ-ously owned by the Coast Guard — is great for those further afi eld trips and whale watching tours because it’s fast and low to the water, says Coltart.

Meanwhile, Pacifi c Pro Dive provides water taxi services to islands like Savary, Texada and Hornby. Coltart says this service is popular with people fl ying into Comox Airport, who simply meet the water taxi at the Comox marina for a quick trip minus ferry lineups.

As well, Pacifi c Pro Dive continues to provide diving and snorkel-

ing tours, and Coltart says snorkeling tours are a popular option for those who want to see life underwater without all the training neces-sary for scuba diving.

“A lot of the diving in the Strait of Georgia is generally 10 metres and shallower and the visibility here year-round is very, very good, so snorkelers can see a lot of the similar stuff that divers can see and have those interactions (with marine life),” says Coltart, not-

ing swimming with sea lions is one example of those close marine encounters.

“They will come literally right up to you and get in your face. They’re immensely curious animals, immensely interactive and social animals.”

Spice Hut owner Syed Talat aims to offer customers authentic Indian cuisine with excellent service, and his Comox location does exactly that.

Friendly staff greeted me as soon as I walked into the restaurant on Comox Ave., and as I started browsing through the menu, I was very impressed with the number of dishes to choose from.

After some diffi cult decisions, because so many items caught my eye, I opted for veggie pakoras to start. Fried to perfection and bursting with fl avour from Indian spices, they were delicious, especially dipped in tamarind chutney.

The lamb korma with naan bread was also a great choice. Rich and creamy, with hints of spice and succulent lamb chunks, this dish was absolutely amazing.

Finally, I tried the tandoori prawn dish, which is served with rice, butter sauce and salad. The dish provided a generous serving of prawns, marinated in yogurt and spices then cooked in tandoor, and they were delectable.

Talat notes everything on the menu is made from scratch, using high quality ingredients and spices. Many of the dishes are North Indian, but a few are from South India. About 90 per cent of the menu is gluten-free and there are many vegan-friendly options, too.

Spice Hut is family owned and oper-ated, and the Comox location — which opened last summer — is the sixth loca-tion the family has opened.

“We have been very busy since we opened (in Comox) and very well received in all the cities we opened (in) so far,” says Talat, noting Ladysmith and Campbell River are other Vancouver Island locations.

Spice Hut is located at 1832 Comox Ave. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days per week. For more information, visit www.spicehutcanada.com or call 250-941-7444. Reservations are recommended.

Carrie Holub took ownership of Comox’s Benino Gelato nearly a year ago, and she couldn’t be more delighted with how well that year has gone.

“It was a really good decision,” she says with a smile. “I’m really, really pleased with how it’s gone. I’m thrilled.”

Holub has kept many aspects of the busi-ness the same, like keeping the same staff — including the business’ previous owner Ruth Vanderlinden — and keeping up the large menu of gelato fl avours and espresso drinks.

She has also made some changes, like add-ing more panini sandwich options and home-made soups. The decor has been updated, with wooden chairs refurbished and painted by Holub herself, who holds a degree in visual art, and draws and makes prints in her spare time.

Holub notes the most signifi cant change is that the shop is now open year-round; for the past several years Benino Gelato closed each winter.

Holub and her family moved to the Valley nearly four years ago from Calgary. When her

and her husband Brad, (who is a behind-the-scenes co-owner), bought Benino Gelato, Carrie recalls she wanted to make sure their family became a part of the com-munity.

“That was one thing that was really important to me; it wasn’t just to come in and build and income off the community, but really be a part of it, really feeling like you’re involved in what’s happening,” says Carrie, as she notes Benino Gelato’s partici-pation in the annual fundraiser Christmas Village, (for local non-profi t societies), as

an example.Buying local is also important to Car-

rie, who notes Benino Gelato’s authentic Italian biscotti and shortbread comes from a woman in Qualicum, for example, and she tries to source local products where possible.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days per week, and will lengthen as summer ap-proaches. For more information check out Benino Gelato on Facebook, call 250-339-3494 or stop in the shop at 1700 Comox Ave.

Mobility Aids Prescription Consultation Aids to Daily LivingWe carry a variety of mobility aids including canes, crutches and walkers which we can custom fi t to your budget and needs. If a walker is what you need, we will ensure that we size it properly and educate you on the use, including the transition from sitting to standing to walking to folding it for transport.

In order for you to get the most out of your medication and to minimize side effects, it is important that you understand what you are taking and how to take it. To achieve this goal we will spend the necessary amount of time going over your medications. This may be as simple as a quick chat when we provide your prescription or as complex as a private sit down consultation.

Not all of us are blessed with good health and can skip merrily through life. For those with particular challenges we do offer a variety of products to help get through the day. These include braces, compression stockings, bath safety products, hot and cold therapy and many other items. If we don’t carry it we can certainly try to source it.certainly try to source it.
