SALMON ARMHEART OF THE SHUSWAP

Welcome to the Shuswap; welcome to the extraordinary. The rugged beauty and awe-inspiring views will work their magic and vibrate through your soul. No one leaves here unchanged.

What exactly can you expect to happen? Inspiration, peace, tranquility, and renewal in the midst of your adventures on the lakes, rivers, and trails. If your idea of a perfect vacation is basking in the long, languid, sun-drenched summer days that invite you to come full stop

- you have come to the right place. If ‘slow down’ isn’t in your vocabulary and all you want is to keep your adrenaline revved up - you have come to the perfect vacation spot.

The Shuswap is renowned for its hiking, biking, and horseback riding

trails that boast everything from alpine meadows with spectacular views to the cool shady wood trails where sunbeams dance through tree tops high overhead. The lake, with over 1,000 km of shoreline, is perfect for paddling, boating, waterskiing, and tubing.

The winter months are equally as beautiful with weather that accommodates by giving enough snow for skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling alongside mild temperatures to make it enjoyable.

Combine all this with the Shuswap’s legendary hospitality and you have the mix for a perfect holiday. Peruse the local shops and farmers’ markets, savour the local wines, beer, cheese, fruit, and vegetables. Stop by the local artisan shops for unique gifts. Relax in the coffee shops, restaurants, and pubs.

Remember you’re on vacation and not on a schedule. Leave the hustle and bustle of your regular life behind. Open your heart to the beauty of the Shuswap and let its magic do the rest.

Surrounded by mountains that dominate the skyline, downtown Salmon Arm is the picturesque epicentre of the entire Shuswap. Within a pleasant strolling distance of parks and lakes, the compact downtown has a vibrancy that reflects the majestic beauty that envelopes it.

The downtown houses trendy boutiques, cafes, ethnically-diverse restaurants, spas, galleries, and theatres. Within this radius you can find locally made gifts, art, local wine and cheese. It is all small town

appeal with the convenience of city amenities.

Indulge yourself by spending a relaxed and stress-free shopping day. Expect to find something unique and enjoy the down-home friendliness of the locals.

Grab a coffee then head over to the Visitor Centre because it’s an excellent place to begin your tour. Hudson Ave is home to an art gallery, movie theatre, post office, specialty boutiques (everything from antiques to candy), and restaurants.

Alexander St is Salmon Arm’s only one-way street. You will find most of the city’s banks are on this street and the rest are within a couple of blocks. There are clothing stores, pies, lattes, books and restaurants, and Salmon Arm’s classic theatre.

On Lakeshore Dr there is a locally owned grocery store, art shops, clothing stores, shoes and trendy shops.

Throughout the downtown core, there are plenty of spas and hairdressers who are always happy to pamper walk-in customers. Remember this is your vacation: walk slowly, take in the fresh air, and relax. If there is a band playing on the Ross Street outdoor stage, stop a while, close your eyes and feel the music.

Enjoy your visit to downtown Salmon Arm. We’re glad you’re here.

WHARFThe Salmon Arm wharf is listed as

the one of most popular attractions in Salmon Arm on TripAdvisor. The comments reflect how visitors and locals alike enjoy the serenity. Even in the midst of the busy summer season, there is a calmness that comes in the midst of such natural beauty.

If you have a pair of binoculars make sure to bring them on your stroll, this is a great place for viewing various birds including eagles, osprey, ducks, grebes, and geese.

The wharf is usually humming with activity. Some people enjoy a leisurely stroll with a coffee or ice cream in hand, others use it for the daily walk with the dog. And there’s always people with cameras because it is a great backdrop for a family vacation photo.

The wharf is located at Marine Peace Park which also has a boat launch and dock system. Boat rentals are available and there is a concession, as well as washrooms, at the end of wharf. It is, by the way, the longest curved wooden wharf in North America.

out by the end of the day.

There are indoor racquetball and squash courts, fitness centres, a swimming pool, bowling, and a jungle gym. You can take a fitness class, or if you are not exercise-inclined, you can go to a movie or even rent the theatre and have a private party. Or spend a day at a spa. The malls are always a fun option as there are often extra activities going on.

If you’re just not an indoor person, just sing in the rain.

around Salmon Arm’s downtown core. Within a couple of minutes you can go from the city centre to any one of these four parks.

FLETCHER PARK 2ND AVE NE

There is no other way to describe this park other than a hub of happy activity throughout the summer. The water spray park is the biggest draw but there is play equipment for the young ones including a climbing structure, slide, and swings. There are picnic tables as well as a large grassy area and plenty of shade at this three-acre park as well as washroom and change-room facilities. Sorry no smoking or dogs allowed.

MARINE PEACE PARK MARINE PARK DR

As the name suggests, you will find this park very peaceful. From early morning until evening this is a favourite spot for strolling, meeting friends, and simply enjoying the lake view. It’s a lovely spot to watch boats come in and out.

There are picnic tables, washrooms, a boardwalk, nature trails, a boat launch, a gazebo, and a 440 foot, curved wooden wharf with a seasonal concession at the end.

On Wednesday nights throughout the summer come for the free

concerts held here (weather permitting).

MCGUIRE LAKE PARK 6 AVE NE

This is one of the locals’ favourite spots for a pleasant, quiet, and easy stroll. The paved walkway around the small lake makes it perfect for anyone with mobility issues or parents with strollers. There are plenty of turtles, geese and ducks and be sure to check out the Japanese friendship gate. There are picnic tables and benches if you just want to stop a while.

McGuire Lake Park is also one of Salmon Arm’s most popular spots for wedding photos.

BLACKBURN PARK 10 AVE SW

This park is for anyone who doesn’t know the meaning of the word ‘relax.’ This territory is for skateboarders, soccer and baseball fans, frisbee enthusiasts and kids who need to swing, climb, run and play. But if you really would rather relax, there is a covered picnic shelter, a concession, and picnic tables in the sunshine. Washroom facilities are available. Parents who have children with mobility issues will really appreciate the universally accessible playground with recycled rubber safety surfacing.

CYCLINGIt’s not always about the lake. You

will notice many vehicles with bike racks because the Shuswap has over 1,500 km of quiet paved back roads that make for great cycling. There are popular loop cycling routes that range from the easy under 20 km variety to the challenging 100 + km.

There is also a variety of mountain trails in the Shuswap Trail system that are great for experiencing a complete breadth of ecosystems and landscapes from an intimate perspective.

For mountain bikers the popular hot spots are the Park Hill Trail System (5 km of varying degrees of difficulty) near Canoe Beach, and the Larch Hills Traverse (38 km one way) that takes you through forests, fens, and dramatic lake vistas.

If you’re not into long treks or steep hills, cycle around the city and do the nice easy loop around McGuire Lake park or around the wharf area.

There is a handy cycle touring brochure that covers the entire region. You can pick up these brochures at any Visitor Centre or at the local cycling shops, which also do servicing and repairs. From May through October local cyclists organize group rides. Ask for details at the local bike shops.

BEACHESCANOE BEACH

Canoe Beach is the one of the most popular swimming spots in the entire Shuswap. As it is the closest one to Salmon Arm, it is the go-to place for most of the local residents. It has a long beautiful pebbly-sand beach, a large roped off swim area and spectacular view of Bastion Mountain.

There is a concession, clean washrooms and change-rooms. There are picnic tables, a picnic shelter, a large grassy area for picnics and plenty of shady trees for those who like to sit out of the direct summer heat.

Feel free to join in beach volleyball games and children will enjoy the small playground.

There is a boat launch and plenty of parking.

Dogs are not allowed on the main beach area but they are allowed at the dog park on the eastern end.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Canoe Beach is 10 minutes east of Salmon Arm. To get there turn off the Trans Canada Hwy just past the golf course and go-karts onto 50th St NE. Keep on this road until the end, turn left and drive about one kilometre along Canoe Beach Rd and follow the signs.

SUNNYBRAE BEACHSunnybrae Park has one of the

best beaches in the area. It’s always busy on a hot summer day but there’s plenty of room so it doesn’t feel crowded. If you have water shoes be sure to bring them along as Sunnybrae beach has more pebbles and rocks than soft sand. There is also a playground, lots of

grass area, picnic tables, clean washrooms and plenty of parking.

Once you get here, you will want to stay the whole day because it’s beautiful, peaceful, and relaxing. Take the trail to the top of the bluffs across the road for a wonderful view of the lake.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Turn off the Trans Canada Hwy at Sunnybrae-Canoe Point Rd 15 km west of Salmon Arm. Sunnybrae Park is 3.7 km down the road, opposite Sunnybrae Hall.

GARDOM LAKEGardom Lake is a lovely place to

swim and picnic. It’s not as busy or as big as some of the other beaches, but there is a beautiful serenity that comes with the landscape.

There is a small grassy play area, a swing set, and covered picnic area.

Gardom Lake’s size and diverse ecosystem make it popular with canoeists and kayakers. It is quiet and peaceful and perfect for a day of paddling.

It is also a favourite of birders, naturalists, and hikers as there are interesting interpretive trails on the two islands in the lake. You can expect to see Bald Eagles, Loons, Painted Turtles, and Red-necked Grebes.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Drive east of Salmon Arm on the Trans Canada Hwy and turn south on Hwy 97B. Turn on Gardom Lake Rd (approx 16 km) and travel another 3.5 km, turning left on Park Rd. The park entrance is almost another kilometre down the road.

FIRST NATIONSThe name “Shuswap” is an

Anglicization of the word the First Nations people call themselves and transcribed today as Secwepemc. The Shuswap are the northernmost Interior Salish group of the Plateau culture area. Formerly their territory was vast, extending from the Rocky Mountains in the east to the Fraser River in the west, and ranging from Williams Lake in the north to Armstrong in the south. Shuswap villages were located near the numerous lakes in their territory and in the valleys of the North and South Thompson rivers and their tributaries, as well as along the Fraser River.

Lakes and rivers were an integral part of their transportation, and salmon was a main-stay in their diet and economy.

They used plants and animals but were guided by their cultural tradition that they were keepers of the land. Native culture hinges on the belief that the land responds positively to care and respect.

During the winter months Interior Salish lived in villages consisting of clustered semi-subterranean dwellings known as pit houses. Here they existed on the provisions they had prepared and preserved at other times of the year.

Generation after generation learned the ways of the elders through a rich oral history that continues to this day. Many of the local bands have programs in place to teach the young their language and traditions.

Some of the local bands have events and tourist attractions that are sure to enrich your stay here in traditional Secwepemc territory.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIESFORESHORE TRAIL

Every park and trail has its own beauty, but Salmon Arm Bay Nature Trail is one of the most compelling in Salmon Arm. Locals never tire of this tree-canopied idyllic foreshore path for their daily walk. It is conveniently located right near the downtown core and the wharf.

The boardwalk and path are both easily accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. The boardwalk and viewing platform are perfect for birdwatching as this wetland provides an ideal habitat for nesting and migratory birds. The Salmon

Arm Bay is one of only two places in the province that provides a suitable breeding habitat for the Western Grebe. Due to the sensitivity of the eco-system and habitat, please stay on the designated trail and obey signage regarding pets.

The east walkway from the wharf parking lot will take you Christmas Island and connect to the Raven trail.

LITTLE MOUNTAIN PARKIf you’re looking for a nice easy

nature trail to hike or bike, head over to Little Mountain Park. This park is one of Salmon Arm’s treasures with 8 km of wide, smooth forested trails. There are a variety of figure eight loops, some are a little more challenging than others. You can finish the short one within half an hour or take your time and explore the various loops for 2 hours.

One includes a short climb to views of Salmon Arm, Salmon Arm Bay, Fly Hills, and Mt Ida.

If you’re visiting here in the winter months, this is a perfect place to snowshoe! Winter or summer, the views are perfect for picture taking.

HOW TO GET THERE:

There are a couple of different entrances to Little Mountain Park: From east Salmon Arm on Hwy 1, turn south on 30th St SE then left (east) at Okanagan Ave. Proceed to the west parking area at the end of the street. There is also a south entrance with parking on 10th Ave SE near 35th St SE.

fishing, water skiing, tubing, picnicking, cycling, or enjoying nature, make sure White Lake is on your to-do list. White Lake as well.

There are several small nice community parks in White Lake including Hugh Road Community Park, White Lake Community Park, and White Lake Provincial Park. These are peaceful spots where you can access the lake and see plenty of wildlife: Bald and Golden Eagles, Loons, Mule and White Tail Deer, Canada Geese, several varieties of ducks and Sandhill Cranes.

SHUSWAP LAKEWith over 1000 km of shoreline

and 309 square km of lake, there is plenty of room for everyone to have fun in Shuswap Lake.

The lake looks like a poorly written letter ‘H’ made up of four ‘arms’: Salmon Arm, the Shuswap Lake main arm, Anstey Arm and Seymour Arm.

Discover the breath-taking water falls, hidden bays and coves, sandy beaches, marine parks, and explore any one of over 500 creeks that flow into Shuswap Lake.

Let the natural serene and idyllic beauty of the Shuswap relax you. Much of the shoreline is like untouched wilderness and the sheer beauty of it will be forever etched in your memory.

ABOUT THE LAKEIt is more properly called a lake

system consisting of the four arms and Mara Lake. The Shuswap Lake is the center point of this large stream and lake network.

Approximately 526 streams and lakes, covering a runoff area of about 25,000 square km, contribute their water into Shuswap Lake. The South Thompson River carries the total intake about 500 km west where it is finally released into the Pacific Ocean near Vancouver.

Three major inflows (Shuswap River, Eagle River and Salmon River) are located at the opposite end from the outflow. This causes a constant flow of water through the complete lake system. That’s what helps keep Shuswap Lake so beautiful.

BOATINGBring your own or rent one! The

lake is busy all summer with houseboats, speed boats, pontoons, seadoos, wake-boarders and water-skiers.

All four arms meet at Cinnemousun Narrows, northeast of Sicamous. Cinnemousun Narrows is one of the busiest stretch of waterways in the Shuswap. There’s a large provincial park with plenty of beach space and a floating open-air restaurant and store at the Narrows! [Party-minded house-boaters typically head toward Seymour Arm while anyone looking for quieter family-friendly waters may want to stay in Anstey Arm].

There are plenty of boat launches throughout the area and most of them are free. There are over 30 marine parks.

PADDLINGAnstey Arm is popular with those

who prefer to paddle. It’s a little quieter than the other arms but the scenery throughout the entire lake system is truly amazing. There are plenty of beaches to land and things to explore.

Some popular paddles in the Salmon Arm area are Canoe Wharf to Salmon Arm Bay, the Tappen and Salmon Arm Bay Circle Tour, or the Salmon Arm Bay itself.

DIVINGThere are over 25 popular diving

sites in the Shuswap. In the Cinnemousson Narrows you can explore a sunken tug boat, the Alvera, or check out several wall dives. See Copper Island Diving’s dive map for more information.

FISHINGShuswap Lake is a perfect habitat

for a variety of fish. There is in fact 19 species of native fish. There are houseboat and fishing charters if you want to leave the planning to someone else.

SWIMMINGOf course there are beaches

throughout the Shuswap. It’s actually kind of fun to spend a little time at the various beaches throughout the area. Canoe Beach in the Salmon Arm area is the one of the most popular.

MEMORY LANEJUNE 5 | 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

SALMAR CLASSIC THEATRE

Take a walk down Memory Lane. The Okanagan Historical Society and the Salmon Arm Community Heritage Commission are hosting an afternoon filled with old-fashioned entertainment.

The afternoon includes a silent movie (‘The Great Train Robbery’), a historical vignette provided by Peter Molnar, a tour of a heritage home, a Barbershop Quartet and a musical presentation by Andrea Roberts and Norma Jean Gomme, and tea and desserts at the Salmon Arm Art Gallery.

It all takes place on Sunday, June 5 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Tickets cost $30 and are available at Bella Designs - 140 Lakeshore Dr. Only 100 tickets are being sold.

HISTORICHISTORIC BUILDINGS

Salmon Arm was officially incorporated on May 4, 1905 and history buffs will appreciate some of the buildings around the downtown area that date shortly after that time. At 191 2nd Ave NE you will see the Salvation Army building that was originally the Baptist Church, built in 1909.

At 31 Hudson Ave you will see the Seniors’ Drop-in Centre that was built in 1928 as the city’s first municipal hall. Across the street at 20 Hudson is the old courthouse that was built two years later and officially opened in 1931. It now houses various businesses and service including the Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre.

Right beside this building is the Salmon Arm Art Gallery which was the city’s original post office that dates from 1937. It was designed by

architect Thomas W. Fuller, son of Thomas Fuller, Chief Architect of the Dominion of Canada, who designed the parliament buildings in Ottawa.

The Merchant Block (118-148 Lakeshore Dr) was constructed in 1929. The Community Heritage Register states this whole block is an enduring testament to the “resiliency of the city” because it was opened in June 1929 a mere four months after a fire swept that street.

At 331 Lakeshore Dr you will see the old CPR Railway Station that was built in 1913. It is no longer in use as CPR ended passenger service in Salmon Arm in 1990.

Take a stroll up 2nd Ave NE if you would like to see some homes that were built just after the turn of the last century that have been lovingly restored by their owners.

SALMON ARM FALL FAIRSEPTEMBER 9 - 11

FALL FAIRGROUNDS

The Salmon Arm Fall Fair is one of

the most enduring and popular annual events. It is not only a chance to show off livestock, garden and field produce, and home arts, but also, and more importantly, a chance to gather together and celebrate what it is to be a community.

When the agricultural show began in 1897 it was a one-day event with exhibits of apples, flowers, vegetables, butter and grain. As time went on the fair grew to a three-day affair with many classes of exhibits ranging from home canning to photography, needle arts and scarecrows, horses, dairy goats, beef and dairy, sheep, poultry, alpacas and llamas. The entertainment, parade and midway are all part of the fun.

This year the theme is ‘Sew it, Grow it & Show It’. It all takes place at the Fall Fairgrounds September 9-11. www.salmonarmfair.com

attracts visitors but the local amenities, including an impressive array of restaurants, keep them coming back year after year.

Whether you like a hearty breakfast, a light lunch, or a dinner in a relaxed atmosphere, there is plenty to choose from.

Salmon Arm is multi-cultural in its food choice offerings: Thai, Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, East

Indian, as well as typical North American fare. Within a radius of a few blocks you can have fresh homemade bread and pie or the spicy exotic dishes that have come to be an integral part of Canadian cuisine.

Trip Advisor has a long list of local restaurants that have rave reviews. It’s all about the “Great service”,

“Good home cooking”, “Best locally roasted coffee”, “Great food in a nice atmosphere”, Amazing

selection,” and “Fast and friendly staff.”

So when you check out the local pubs, restaurants, eateries, and coffee shops know that you’re in for a culinary treat. From spicy and rich to home-style comfort food there really is something for everyone.

The local restaurants make use of the fine local produce, dairies, breweries, and wineries so you can be sure you’re enjoying an authentic taste of the Shuswap.

Dining out has a number of benefits, besides the obvious of not having to cook or do dishes. First of all, it encourages flexibility and the opportunity to try a new dish. It also creates a distraction-free family time. The meals you eat at restaurants usually last longer than the ones you have at home so your conversations tend to be longer.

This is a time to turn the phone off and enjoy some quality time with family and friends.

You can use this opportunity to be a small treat or a big celebration. Whether it’s a surprise outing for ice cream or a pre-booked fancy dinner, eating out is one way of building relationships and making the everyday a little more special.

So treat yourself, your loved ones, and your friends to a tasty meal at one of the local restaurants or pubs (or better yet, let them treat you!)

Savour your food and your time in a relaxed atmosphere. Don’t rush and remember to save some room for dessert. Calories don’t count when you are on holiday. Seriously, don’t count your calories. Don’t think about them, don’t worry about them, they don’t exist. Here’s how to do it...Hum your favourite tune and sing these words over and over:

“Holiday calories don’t count when you’re in the Shuswap - oh yeah!”

FARM & CRAFTFARM FRESH

It was in the early 1900s when Salmon Arm’s fame as a fruit-growing area (particularly for apples) began to grow. A few years later dairy production was also an important part of the local economy.

Today visitors can enjoy the same world-class taste fresh from local farms. Stop by the local fruit stands, farmers’ markets or the supermarkets that carry local produce. From berries to tree fruit to melons and vegetables there is nothing quite so tasty as fresh fruit and vegetables right from the garden.

The restaurants use fresh local ingredients for the pies and other dishes so you can expect your meals and desserts to be extra tasty.

Some farms and ranches in the area do tours so it’s a great opportunity to connect with the land and see first-hand how food is produced. For more information pick up a Farm Tours brochure at the Visitor Centre.

GRASS ROOT DAIRIES1470 50TH STREET SW

At Grass Root Dairies you can enjoy local fresh cheese made with the expertise of fine European artisan tradition. Since 1983 Grass Root Dairies [formerly known as Gort’s Gouda Cheese] has been making award-winning products that reflect their time, care, dedication, and professionalism.

They use only natural ingredients,

no preservatives, and everything is done at the Salmon Arm cheese plant. Cheese-making, as you can see if you visit their plant, is an art as well as a science. Come in and view how cheese is made or watch their informative DVD on the cheese-making process. The cheese is made from milk from cows on their own farm. The cows are grass-fed only, graze on the pasture in the warmer months and have organic hay in the winter.

You’re always welcome to stop by for a sample and enjoy great-tasting cheese. If cheese is not your thing you can also find fresh milk, and old fashioned yogurt. Treat yourself to a nice glass of cold chocolate milk or  homemade gelato made right on the farm.

OVINO WINERY1577 YANKEE FLATS RD, SILVER CREEK

Mother Nature played an important role in the success of Ovino Winery’s award winning wines. The glacier carved landscape, the sandy and loam soils marbled with infrequent layers of clay lies in the sun-drenched Salmon Valley.

John and Catherine Koopmans bought the property in 1992. They started off with a dairy farm but soon realized the location and soils were perfect for a vineyard. They planted four varieties of grapes: Pinot Gris, Pinot Meunier, Gewurztraminer and the old cold hardy standby Marachel Foch.

Ovino Winery is a true small family operation. From harvest to bottling, all is done with dedication to perfection.

When you visit, ask which wines go best with various dishes. The tasting room is open daily from 11:00am to 5:00pm from May 20 until October 15 and during the Christmas season.

MABEL LAKEMabel Lake is a lovely, long (35km), deep lake east of Enderby. Despite the fact it is popular for camping, fishing, and boating, the serenity is undisturbed. When you’re on the lake, the snow-capped mountains tower over like a beautiful backdrop. There’s a marina, golf course, airstrip, restaurants, and other amenities.

Make sure to stop by the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre, a salmon hatchery dedicated to restoring wild salmon stocks on Shuswap River.

Enderby has a small-town charm that has to be experienced to be really appreciated. You need to park the car and walk around. You can find antiques, local artwork and crafts, fun beach toys, unique gifts, and historic books all within a few blocks.

Make sure you get a few selfies in front of the buildings so you can show your friends that you were in the same spots as movie stars Anthony Hopkins, Julia Stiles, and Alexander Ludwig in the movie ‘Go With Me’.

Remember to get a selfie with any beagle going by because one of them might be Miss P., winner of the

prestigious Westminster Dog Show in New York making Enderby home to North America’s top dog.

Stop by the Visitor Centre to find out about the events throughout the year including a gold-panning competition, outdoor concerts, Canada Day celebrations, and the very impressive Enderby Arts Festival.

The open air market in the south end of the city always has lots of treasures, and one of the biggest attractions in Enderby is the drive-in theatre.

Be sure to pick up one of their city maps and you will see by the ‘legend’ that there is lots to see and do no matter what season: golfing, hiking, biking, swimming, tube floating (very popular), water skiing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, x-country skiing, snowmobiling, camping, and of course, shopping.

Armstrong is, at heart, a farming community, and nowhere does this show itself better than the annual Interior Provincial Exhibition (IPE). It’s huge. From the bull riding, team roping and saddle broncs to the live shows, midway and agricultural exhibition it’s an amazing all-around show.

There’s an Iron Chef contest, dog agility show, a West Coast lumberjack show, blacksmith and Western farrier demonstrations and the barn dance in the big tent.

It all takes place from August 31 to September 4 at 3371 Pleasant Valley Rd in Armstrong.

WHAT TO DO IN ARMSTRONG?

THE I.P.E.

There’s lots to do Armstrong. Stop by Rogers Flour Mill, it’s BC’s only flour and cereal mill. They have bulk food and offer gluten free products and their own granola mixes.

The Chickadee Ridge Miniature Horse Farm is the largest breeder of quality, refined, well pedigreed miniatures in Canada. This is a great family attraction. If you’re feeling nostalgic, rent some roller skates at the arena.

Don’t miss the Armstrong-Spallumcheen Museum and Art

Gallery with its fascinating heritage and railway displays.

And be sure to go to Caravan Farm Theatre, a professional outdoor theatre company based on an 80 acre farm just outside of Armstrong. It is one of Canada’s national treasures. This summer they’re presenting Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize winning classic, Our Town, from July 19th to August 21st at the Caravan Farm Theatre at 4886 Salmon River Road, Armstrong-Spallumcheen.

SICAMOUSGATEWAY TO THE SHUSWAP

You have probably heard Sicamous is known as the houseboat capital of Canada, but did you ever wonder how that came to be? Quite simply, the natural beauty of the Mara and Shuswap lakes and Monashee mountains have made this inevitable.

It’s a haven for anyone who loves swimming, paddling, boating, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

There’s nothing quite like a day on a houseboat. Imagine starting your day, a cup of coffee in hand, basking in the quiet sunrise with the sounds of nature gently soothing your soul, surrounded only by water and mountains. You spend the day exploring the spectacular lake, swimming at your leisure, maybe doing a little fishing, and ending the day with a campfire on a sandy beach.

Everyone around you is in the same happy, relaxed vacation mode, enjoying family and friends with no fixed schedule to mar these perfect Shuswap days.

Visitors return year after year because Sicamous has that warm small-town appeal.

But Sicamous is not just a summer vacation destination. Cyclists and hikers also enjoy coming in the fall when the the temperature is a little cooler and the landscape is arrayed in its glory. The trails in the area range from easy half-hour loops to to a 38 km loop of rugged and difficult terrain and everything in-between.

The winter brings the snowmobilers because Sicamous has some of the best alpine snowmobiling in Western Canada. There are four alpine areas that offer deep snow, powder filled open bowls, endless meadows, and of

course, breathtaking views.

Whether you visit Sicamous in the spring, summer, fall, or winter you’re sure to find plenty of things to do surrounded by the most spectacular scenery.

Although it’s not a big city, downtown Sicamous has everything you need while you’re here on vacation: clothing, candy, beach toys, giftware, jewelry, books, games, hats, houseboat supplies, and more sunscreen.

You will appreciate the small-town friendly service you get all around Sicamous because they’re a friendly bunch of people. (Why wouldn’t they be when they get to live in this vacation paradise? Seriously, they all live within minutes of the beach.) There’s ice

cream, specialty coffees, and really, really good food. Spoil yourself a little with a new hair cut, pedicure or massage - don’t wait until you go home. Pamper yourself here and now.

You can pick up a picnic lunch and enjoy it right beside the beautiful lake right near the downtown. People come to Sicamous to enjoy the lake but they stay because of the atmosphere and the downtown services that are the bedrock of this tourist haven.

Sicamous has a number of parks that really blend convenience with nature and lifestyle. Whether you want to enjoy yourself by the lake or take a quiet stroll in the woods, you don’t need to go any further - just park yourself here!

BEACH PARKFirst of all there is Beach Park that

is right near the downtown. It has a large sandy beach, and good-sized swimming area. There’s a water park, a playground area, volleyball courts and a well-kept public washroom and change room.

So spend a lazy day sprawled out on a blanket with your toes dug into the sand, and make sandcastles with the kids or grab a frisbee to throw around.

RIVERFRONT NATURE PARKThe Riverfront Nature Park is a

lovely and peaceful place to take a stroll with beautiful views of the water, giant Cottonwood trees, and plenty of wildlife. As you walk along the path with all your senses inundated with calm beauty, you will be invigorated and refreshed and your troubles will melt away.

Remember to take to your time and walk slowly as the bird life is abundant to those who wait and watch. To paraphrase Robert Frost - take this path less travelled by, it will make all the difference.

CITY PARKSFINLAYSON PARK

Dine al fresco at Finlayson Park - there are plenty of picnic tables. There’s something to be said for packing a basket of tasty and simple food, and sitting in the great outdoors to enjoy it. Just pack some simple sandwiches, plenty of local fruit, cheese and crackers, juice and

water and have at it. This is just a great way for you and your friends to enjoy yourselves. The kids will enjoy the playground and if you have a baseball, gloves and bats, you can get a game going at the ball diamonds. [In which case you should also pack peanuts and crackerjacks in the picnic basket].

How did Sicamous get its name? Many years prior to arrival of western settlers and construction of the railway, this area was inhabited by semi nomadic Natives, a branch of the interior Salish, called the

“Scheckmoos”. An 1871 provincial map shows Schickamoos Narrows which was known as a “meeting place of Indians.”

In 1864 the gold discovery on the Columbia brought more people to the area. In 1885 the Last Spike was driven in at Craigellachie which linked eastern Canada to the west.

In the early 1900s CPR hill in Sicamous became a residential development. Meanwhile settlers were arriving in steady numbers, not looking for gold, but something better - a home in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

SKY TREK ADVENTURE PARKAt Sky Trek Adventure Park you can

feel the adrenaline rush and be the master your own adventure.

Challenge yourself as you enjoy exhilarating fun on the zip lines, a giant swing, the aerial trekking course, or the Indiana Jones climbing wall.

And the best part is - it’s in the middle of a stunningly beautiful old growth BC rainforest right beside the Enchanted Forest.

The kids will love the Kids’ Tree Adventures course and the Kids’ Jungle Gym.

On the Aerial Trekking Course you climb from tree to tree on ladders, scramble up nets, over suspended bridges, and swinging logs, fly down zip lines or even slide to the next tree on a skateboard. Or test your nerve on Adventure Tower. At 15 m off the ground you can try the sky swing, sky drop, two climbing walls, log climb and Jacob’s Ladder.

For a complete adrenaline rush try the Sky Swing - a giant pendulum swing that draws you 15 m high before a terrifying free fall through

the forest.

Remember to wear comfortable outdoor clothing, shoes or sports sandals (must have a strap around the heel, flip flops are not allowed) for climbing trees.

During May, June, September, and October reservations are required from Monday to Friday. On weekends, holidays and throughout the entire months of July and August it’s a first come, first served basis.

CRAZY CREEK RESORTJust west of Revelstoke on the Trans

Canada Hwy you will find Crazy Creek Resort, a peaceful oasis of nature right beside the highway.

There are three geo-thermally heated and conditioned large hot

pools that come from sulfur-free, pristine, glacial blue

water.  Breathe the high mountain air as you

gaze up at the beautiful waterfalls of Crazy Creek in the midst of the splendor of the majestic Eagle Pass Valley.

The 240 ft. suspension bridge spans the gorge directly

in front of the waterfalls. The connecting boardwalks leading to the bridge also access public washrooms, a courtyard with a fountain, gift shop with ice cream and snacks, seating area and viewing platforms.

Consider a relaxing weekend, or bring the ATVs for extensive riding on forestry roads and trails. The growth above Crazy Creek is surprisingly coastal with cedars, ferns and numerous waterfalls. From Crazy Creek Resort’s suites, or from the hot pool parking lots, it is easy to access top notch hiking or quadding (or sledding) trails as Eagle Pass Mountain and Crazy Creek Gorge offer ideal terrain for touring.

This is an affordable family get-away whether you’re looking for spacious full-kitchen accommodation suites, campsites with power/water or rv/tenting sites in the trees. There is a convention centre meeting room that can be used for family reunions or celebrations.

Open every day of the year, it really is a four-season resort with an amazing assortment of attractions.

ENCHANTED FORESTIf you don’t think fairy tales of

enchantment are true, step into the Enchanted Forest.

This forest, home of fairytale heros, villains, and creatures, magically makes you want to come again and again. It really is like stepping back in time and into a world where dreams really do come true.

The main trail meanders through one of BC’s beautiful old growth forests and takes you to homes of Goldilocks, Snow White, the Three Little Pigs, and even Captain Hook.

See over 350 jolly folk art figurines, BC’s tallest grandest treehouse that rises fifty feet into the forest canopy and a giant stump house with surprises around every corner.

You can also take a row boat through the wetlands and see beaver dams, lodges and floating natural gardens, and frogs on lily pads.

Relax and enjoy the majesty of this truly enchanted forest and simply let its magic take hold of your heart.

WHITEWATER RAFTINGRevelstoke has made a name for

itself in the world of whitewater rafting as enthusiasts from around the globe love the spectacular beauty of the Illecillewaet River. The river has high water levels from June through early July, so you can expect some pretty fast-paced action. In later July and August the lower water levels make it perfect for families with smaller children.

This is adventure tourism at its finest – stepping outside your comfort zone to enjoy the wilderness (and sometimes wildlife) at an exhilarating pace.
