SPECIAL REPORT THE 2017 IPA BEST OF THE BEST
“Follow effective actions with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.” – Peter Drucker
For more than 20 years, INSIDE PublicAccounting (IPA) has named the Best of the Best firms. This group, the highest performers within the profession, are ranked on more than 70 metrics. The 2017 Best of the Best firms produce superior financial results while planning for long-term, sustainable growth.
In 2017, 587 firms were eligible for this accolade by participating in IPA’s 27th Annual Survey and Analysis of Firms.
The IPA Best of the Best firms are scattered across the U.S. and Canada and come in all sizes – from 27 employees to 2,615. Two-thirds of the Best of the Best firms appeared on the list in 2016, demonstrating an impressive commitment to excellence and sustainability.
THE IPA BEST OF THE BEST SELECTION PROCESS
IPA uses an ever-evolving proprietary formula for determining the Best of the Best firms. In addition to superior financial results, key areas of focus include staffing, training, governance, organizational structure, decision-making and strategic focus.
WHAT CAN BE LEARNED FROM THE BEST OF THE BEST?
IPA’s analysis of the Best of the Best firms provides insight into what is possible within the profession. Leaders of firms of any size, region or specialty can learn from the common characteristics and best practices of these high-performing firms. IPA’s goal is to offer a clearer understanding of how Best of the Best firms operate by highlighting various management

approaches. This issue includes perspectives on staffing models, the challenge of balancing professional staff development with increasing revenue per FTE, and different methods of
partner compensation. For example, on page 10 find an examination of high-to-low partner compensation ratios, open versus closed compensation systems and key factors in determining compensation formulas. IPA also lists the highest-scoring Best of the Best firms for 2017 on page 16.
The Best of the Best Profit Indicator table on page 14 compares financial and operational results with averages of all survey participating firms. This data focuses on key metrics related to growth, practice mix, net revenue, net income and equity partner information to provide insight into the performance of the Best of the Best.
WHAT IS NOT MEASURED WHEN COMPILING THE BEST OF THE BEST
While the formula for the IPA Best of the Best includes numerous metrics, other aspects of firm management are difficult to quantify, such as culture, partnership dynamics, client perspectives and firm investments for the future.
It is IPA’s goal to add layers and elements that will, in the future, provide the clearest view possible of those firms that are at the top of their game. IPA
The IPA Best of the Best Methodology: All metrics in this issue are based on the top-scoring 25 Best
of the Best, unless otherwise noted. The top-scoring 25 Best of the Best firms represent the top 5% of
all U.S. firms that participated in the 2017 IPA Annual Survey and Analysis of Firms. The 10 Best of
the Best Under $5 Million and the five Best of the Best firms in Canada are identified and recognized
in this newsletter but are not included in the analysis.

The 2017 IPA Best Of The Best Under $5 Million
Operating at an IPA Best of the Best level is a t laccomplishment for any firm, particularly those with less than $5 million in net revenues. The Best of the Best Under $5 Million operate with a relatively small staff – from seven to 26 employees – yet their performance is indicative of firms much larger thantheirs. Many of these firms have adopted some of thesophisticated structures, policies and systems normally seen inmuch larger firms.
is special recognition goes to Duggan & Massey, which has earned the Best of the Best Under $5 Million recognition for five consecutive years, Erickson Brown & Kloster and Iannuzzi Manetta & Co., each marking their third consecutive year on the Best of the Best Under $5 Million list.
IPA congratulates the following firms for bringing a refined combination of nimbleness, skill and entrepreneurial acumen to their management and operations, leading to success.IPA
