NORTH VISTA SECONDARY SCHOOL

12 January 2018e

Dear Parents/Guardian

As part of continual assessment (CA), Semester 1 Common Tests for Specialised League

will begin from 16 January to 3 April 2018. The tests will take place during the first period on

Tuesdays as well as Thursdays and the duration of each test is 30 minutes and 50 minutes

respectively. The Assessment Schedule for Secondary Three and Four/Five students can be

found on page 8 and 14 respectively in this booklet. In addition to the assessment schedule,

we consider homework to be an effective way of both consolidating learning and providing

an opportunity for students to work independently. Homework Guidelines are on page 5 of

this booklet.

NV's success is grounded on a number of key principles and some of these are:

i) A positive attitude that is based on a willingness on a student’s part to achieve their best.

ii) Hard work – we do not shy away from the fact that the final GCE O/N Level Examination is

challenging and requires students to adopt a work ethic that is focused and consistent.

iii) A strong working relationship with teachers - a fundamental key to success in the

foundation years is on students continuing to develop a positive working relationship with

their teachers through regular and focused participation in courses and a willingness to

engage with teachers outside of set class time.

iv) Routines and Balance - all students will need to adjust both their school, CCA and family

commitments to achieve perspective and balance in their studies. This is a reality that

should not be underestimated and in these early weeks.

We adopt a holistic approach to education in this school. As such, it is essential to remind

our students of the need for balance in their lives during this year. The skills achieved and

the growth that occurs in NV is not simply limited to academic success. We hope that this

Assessment booklet will lay a foundation for our parents/guardians and teachers to work

together to establish a partnership built on the shared goal of supporting our students and

assisting them to achieve the best of their ability. Please contact the respective Year Heads

at 68793930 or send them an email at [email protected] should you require any

further clarification:

Sec Three – Mrs Jessie Lim

Sec Four/Five - Mdm Sri Devi Arunagiri

Specialised League Year Head – Mdm Suhana Ahmad

Thank you.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Regina Lee

Principal

NV ASSESSMENT POLICY GUIDELINES FOR PRACTICE 2018

(Revised November 2017)

The NV Assessment Policy guides the design of the assessment environment in the school. The policy creates a reference point for all members of the NV learning community. It defines the assessment philosophy, standards and practices in the interest of student learning. Rationale for Assessment Assessment is one of the processes by which the school monitors the quality and extent of student learning and development. The aims of assessment include: improving student learning through the provision of relevant and timely feedback; evaluating the effectiveness of teaching processes; improving the design and delivery of programmes; and formally certifying student achievement with respect to grade-level learning outcomes for

placement at subsequent levels.

Modes of Assessment Assessment is holistic and aims to assess and develop the whole child. Assessment is progressively sequenced to support the developmental aims of the curriculum. There are clear rubrics and success criteria for each assessment, whether formative or summative. Continual Assessment (CA) is usually formative and aims to progressively develop the students’ content and skills. Students will be assessed through a variety of modes (e.g. quizzes, presentations, portfolios, performance tasks, written, oral) to allow them to demonstrate learning in a variety of ways. Assessment Feedback & Reports All student work should be returned within 2 weeks of submission for feedback to be effective. Results are reported as follows: Progress Reports (end of Term 1 & Term 3) Semestral Report twice a year [mid-year (MY) and preliminary (Prelims)/end-of-year

Common Test Structure The Tuesday/Thursday Common Test structure will be fully implemented for all levels. CA Weighting

The weighting of CA1 and CA2 components is as follows:

Components CA1 / CA2

Common Tests 10%

Alternative Modes of Assessment 5%

The above percentages are based on the entire year’s weighting.

For some subjects, Common Tests may be fully weighted as 15%.

Aside from Common Tests, there will not be any class-based tests conducted and

weighted in CA1 and CA2.

Alternative modes of assessment comprise graded assignments, holiday homework,

portfolio work and practical.

This weighting is stipulated so as to ensure balanced assessment in NV.

Absence from Tests and Examinations A student who is absent for a paper due to illness must produce a medical certificate to cover his/her absence. The medical report / statement must clearly state the doctor's diagnosis and certify that the student was unfit to take the test. Medical certificate without the doctor's diagnosis is not a valid supporting document. Students without a medical certificate will be given zero mark for the paper that they missed. Medical certificates issued by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners and letters from parents will not be accepted. Academic Conduct, Integrity and Responsibility All students are responsible for upholding the highest standards of academic conduct and integrity in all academic undertakings. Any act of academic dishonesty, including cheating and plagiarism, will be subject to stern disciplinary action. Homework Guidelines Homework in NV is an essential part of the learning process. There are four types of commonly assigned homework, each having a different intended outcome.

Type Definition Intended Outcome

Completion Any work assigned during the school day not completed in class

Helps student keep up to date with the classroom programme

Practice Any work that reviews and reinforces skills and concepts taught in class

Helps student practise newly acquired skills to develop fluency

Preparation Any work that prepares student for upcoming lessons

Encourages student to acquire background information or to bring their prior knowledge and experiences to upcoming units of study

Extension Any work that explores and refines learning in new contexts or integrates and expands on classroom learning

Encourages student to problem solve, think creatively and think critically

* Homework is given in every subject at least once a week. The amount of time a student spends on assigned homework depends on such factors as: the student’s needs and learning ability. Submission of Work Students are expected to submit their homework by the stipulated deadline set by their respective teachers. Any request for extension should be made before the assignment due date. Students are responsible to make a reasonable plan for making up missed or incomplete work. The penalty for late submission of work without a valid reason (e.g. illness) is given below:

1-3 50% Detention

>3 days No mark awarded Detention

Students will still be expected to complete the homework for their learning

Parents/guardian will be alerted if there are frequent late/missed assignments by their child/ward.

The Role of the Teacher Assessment is an important part of the NV Curriculum as it is a powerful tool to guide and support students’ learning. Assessment is For learning (formative), Of learning (summative) and As Learning (self-directed and reflective). In planning learning experiences, teachers will also plan how they will monitor students’ progress, provide feedback and facilitate the attainment of essential learning outcomes. Teachers will adopt a learner-centric approach to assessment by: a. Providing a range of opportunities for students to demonstrate learning and

understanding; b. Gathering and recording evidence of students’ demonstrations of learning; c. Making judgements about students’ level of attainment of learning outcomes; d. Guiding the planning of teaching and learning programmes; e. Providing students with clear criteria for success; and f. Engaging students in self-reflection, to enable them to keep track of and share their

learning. Support from Parents/Guardians The school values parents’ and guardians’ support in monitoring students’ learning and progress at home. Attached are the assessment plans for the first semester (CA components and respective weightings) and test/major assignment schedule for reference.

Advice to Students Communicate with the teacher if there are any questions or concerns about the purpose

or expectations of assignments or homework. Use organisational tools such as personal calendars, homework calendars, class

websites or chat applications (e.g. WhatsApp) to record assignment/tasks. Establish a place with no distractions for completing homework. Work within structured chunks of time and with short breaks in between. Schedule and limit a set time for social networking (Facebook & Chats) AFTER

homework is completed. Minimise or set limits on possible distractions: TV, gaming, texting etc.

Check and ensure that homework is completed as instructed and submitted by the stipulated deadline.

Set clear learning targets for themselves. Take action to improve learning based on assessment information, which includes

feedback given by teachers.
