The CT801 transmitter is designed for direct mounting on or near the tank. The CT801allows for remote level measurement by means of a 4-20mA signal and application ofthe bubbling tube measurement principle.

Leakage in the air supply line is not a problem. An automatic valve is activated whenthe supply pressure drops below 1 bar. When this valve closes, the liquid cannot flowback into the bubbling tube and damage the transmitter.

The CT801 can also be used for a tank with overpressure. The overpressure iscompensated by means of a pressure differential transmitter.

The CT801 is protected by a built-in filter against contaminated air or neutral gas.

• Continuous indication• Minimum consumption• Compact design• Overpressure protection• Type approval

The CT180 level indicator consists of a CT100M Modulator with an integrated CT080Indicator.The operation of the CT180 level indicator is based on the hydrostatic pressuremeasuring principle. The principle is based on feeding a low air or neutral gas flow in abubbling tube which creates a back pressure.

The air flow is fed by the CT100M Modulator which contains the following elements:• An air supply shut-off valve• A filter for the air supply• An automatic continuous flow regulator• An over pressure protection for the indicator• A purge valve to blow the bubbling tube clean

The pressure output of the modulator is connected to the indicator.

EM540 Radar microwave level measurement systems are based on the use of smartsensors. These contain microprocessors that generate a signal that sends level, pressure and temperature data to a central monitoring system. The EM540 radar offersentirely new features such as self-diagnosis and self-monitoring, and it is remotelyprogrammable. These features enable the system to maintain itself continuously.

The radar also offers the advantage of a very compact design thanks to the flatantenna. The reduced dimensions enable easy installation and simple maintenance.

Furthermore, this system offers great advantage through the use of an intrinsically safetwo-way digital transmission signal between the radar and the central monitoringsystem, enabling the EM540 radar to be connected to any type of marine computer ormonitoring system.

As the name says, the PFS-TL self-powerd tank contents guage does not use externalenergy such as electricity, air or any other energy source. The hydrostatic pressure ofthe liquid in the tank is exerted directly on the diaphragm and transferred via gas (e.g.oxygen) to an indicator.

The principle is based on using gas to displace the pressure on the diaphragm to anindicator. Level reading is continuous. Simple operation and maintenance-freemeasurement solution. The capillary pipe can be removed for installation, tank andbulkhead fittings. Fittings can be supplied as well.

Additionally, a special isolating valve is available to enable removal of the pressuresensor for maintenance, even when the tank is full. (Only for the externally mountedpressure sensor.)

The BILGE level switch is a float switch specifically developed as level switch in bilgesand dry areas aboard ships. Thanks to its construction, the switch can continueworking without any problem under the most extreme conditions and in extremelycontaminated liquids. The switch is provided with a casing that protects the floatagainst the movement of the liquid, turbulence and all possible contamination thatcan occur in bilge water. Due to its small dimensions, the switch can be mountedvirtually anywhere.

This magnetic float rises and drops along the length of a rod at liquid level. Ahermetically-closed reed switch is installed in this rod, which is activated ordeactivated by the magnet in the float.

A test mechanism can be used to test the operation of the switch withoutdisconnecting the sensor or submerging the bilge under water.

The temperature and pressure transmitter T901-Px1A has been designed specificallyto comply with current requirements in the field of cargo monitoring. The transmitter isdesigned in such a way that one installation will provide two types of measurement(pressure and temperature).Maintenance is very easy, thanks to the modular design of each part. The absolutepressure transducer is constructed in such a way that environmental salinity cannotcause damage. The T901-Px1A can be connected to the radar by a flexible hose, sothat the assembly is not sensitive to heavy swell. The temperature sensors (optionally 1to 3 sensors) precisely indicate the temperature of the liquid cargo, enabling thecomputer to correct the specific gravity parameters directly.

The draught reference pot is necessary for measuring the draught of a ship. The directconnection with the seawater creates the same level in the pot. The draught referencepot is used in combination with the pneumatic indicator CT180 or with anelectronic/pneumatic transmitter CT801. This enables measurement of the ship'sdraught based on the bubbling tube principle. The reference pot is made entirely of stainless steel and does not need any treatmentprior to installation. It is important to determine the correct position in relation to theso-called "Zero line" of the ship.

The TA3840C communication unit is the "heart" of the system. The system works witha bus system over which all radar signals are received. All the signals (level, pressureand temperature) of the installed sensors are processed in the unit. These signals canbe processed, made visible and, if necessary, compensated on the display. Thecommunication unit creates alarms for pressure and temperature and the overfillalarm, and controls the alarm indicator. The unit controls the local readouts on deckand the PC. Furthermore, the signals for the alarm unit in the facilities, for example, are received from the communication unit.

There are several possibilities for obtaining level read-outs.The electrical level transducers can be connected to an onboard computer. There are onboard computers that read 4-20mA signals directly, but there are alsosystems that use an RS 232 signal, for instance. In that case, the level sensors can beconnected via the TA3840C system.

If no use is made of computers or in cases where a "regular" display is preferred, thefollowing dial instrument is available:

DescriptionThe level indicator model CT040-AN indicates the level or volume of the liquid in thetank. This instrument can be installed in a panel, cabinet or desktop. It can be used incombination with all types of electrical transmitters with an output of 4-20mA. (Ofcourse it is also compatible with the CT801 electronic/pneumatic transmitter). Becauseof the low internal resistance, it is possible to connect an extra indicator for read-outsat a second station.

sensors IP68• Self-test• 16 channels• Intrinsically safe• SOLAS compliant

The WIDS (Water Ingress Detection System) consists of the control cabinet withspecifically developed Lidec L20-70DW liquid detecting switch. For alerting, thesystem uses a horn and flashing light. The WIDS meets the SOLAS standard, section XII reg. 12 for water detection in drytankers and bulk carriers.

Although use of liquid detecting switches in bulk carriers seems unusual, it is a factthat some bulk cargoes, e.g. pit coal (and most mineral ores), liquefy at hightemperatures. This can result in a liquid substance with drastic impacts on distributionof weight potentially leading to instability and listing of the ship. Timely moisturedetection in the bulk cargo can help to prevent this extremely dangerous situation.

Remote-controlled systemsEconosto has developed a high-quality hydraulic actuator for operating butterfly and ball valves. Thanks to their quarter-turnconstruction and ISO5211-standard top flanges, butterfly valves and ball valves can easily be fitted with an actuator. Theseactuators can be mounted and adjusted in our well-equipped workshop.

Hydraulische SystemenHydraulic actuators convert hydraulic energy into a 90-degree output rotation or linear movement, suitable for the actuationof all quarter-turn valves, globe valves and distribution boxes. The high signal pressure gives this compact actuator a highoutput torque. And the sturdy construction guarantees a high level of operational reliability.

The actuators are suitable for indoor and outdoor installation, and optionally for submerged use. The maritime sector, amongothers, applies these actuators in:

• ballast systems• fuel systems• loading systems• bilge systems• firefighting systems

IntroductionSignal horns for ocean-going ships must comply with the technical requirements described in the "International Regulationsfor Collision Prevention at Sea" (Colregs 1972).

In Annex III of these regulations, in order to ensure a wide variation in the characteristics of horn signals, it is proposed thattheir basic frequencies should lie within the following limits:

1) 70-200 Hz for a ship with a length of 200 metres or more;2) 130-350 Hz for a ship with a length of 75 to 200 metres;3) 250-700 Hz for a ship with a length of 20 to 75 metres;4) 250-700 Hz for a ship with a length of less than 20 metres.

Sound receptioninstallations• fig. SRD 414/2

• SRD 414/2 Elephant Ears• Digital techniques• Easy to install• Effective noise suppression• Easy to operate• For instant connection to VDR• Complies with Solas

IntroductionElephant Ears is a sound reception system that allows the officer on watch to hearsignals from outside and to locate approaching ships within a totally enclosed bridge. In this way the officer of the watch complies with the "look-out" regulation as requiredby the Colregs 1972, Part B, Rule 5.

Sound reception systems installed on or after 1 July 2002 must comply with therequirements of the Performance Standards for Navigation Equipment - ResolutionMSC 86(79. The Zöllner Sound signal reception system SRD414 - referred to as"Elephant Ears" - complies with this standard, and carries type approval numberBSH/49/40P/96, already since 29 May 1996. The unit is registered under type approvalno. BSH/49/40P/96

Extract from the revised text of the 1974 Solas UN Convention, Chapter V:

At all times, every ship must maintain both good visibility and ability to hear sound. This is essential for the ability to judge the situation properly in all conditions and fullyassess the risk.

The revised chapter of the 1974 SOLAS convention relating to this topic came intoforce on 1 July 2002. Regulations 18 and 19 of chapter V are the rules that relate to thesound reception systems.

Regulation 18A) DescriptionSound reception systems are acoustic electrical navigational aid systems that allow theofficer of the watch to perceive sounds from outside in a totally enclosed bridge inorder to comply with the required "Crow's-nest" regulations of the InternationalRegulations to prevent Collisions at Sea. This system should comply with therequirements that are summarised in Resolution A694 (17) and should at least have thefollowing functions.

B) Function requirementsSound reception systems must be able to detect sound signals from all directions in anaudio range of 70 Hz to 820Hz, and to reproduce these incoming signals acousticallyinside the bridge. Besides this, the approximate direction of the incoming signal willhave to be indicated, at least forward or aft, or port or starboard and the backgroundnoise should be suppressed to eliminate any unwanted sounds.

C) Method of presentationIncoming signals must be reproduced on the bridge by means of at least oneloudspeaker. The volume should be operated by only a single control. The volume control must be adjusted in such a way that at all times the incomingsignal is at least 10dB(A) higher than the sound level on the bridge. There must be adisplay that renders a visual indication for at least three sec. of the incoming signalsand their direction.

D) InstallationThe microphones should be installed in such a way that they are as far away fromsound sources on the ship as practically possible. Sounds caused by the wind and theship's mechanical vibrations should be reduced as much as possible. The microphones should be installed on the bridge in such a way that the soundsignals are observable from all positions on the bridge.

Regulation 19Requirements for navigational systems and equipment for newly built ships

Summary: It is mandatory that all ships built on or after 1 July 2002 are equipped witha navigational system which is constructed in accordance with sections 2.1 through 2.9of regulation 19. The amendments with regard to the sound signalling system aredescribed in section 2.1.8, which states that all ships of the stated dimensions with anenclosed bridge must be equipped with a sound reception system. In other words, theofficer on watch, responsible for navigation, must be able to hear the sound signalsand to determine their direction.

The sound reception systems SRD 414 ELEPHANT EARS comply entirely with theseIMO standards.

P/V valves• fig. DE/S

• Compact design• Large capacity• High quality

High-velocity P/V valves are explosion-proof overpressure and underpressure valvesthat will allow gases to escape from a cargo tank only after sufficient overpressure hasbuilt up. Due to a flame arrestor in the suction section of the valve and the high speedof the escaping gas, flames will not propagate into the tank in case of a fire. In thecase of underpressure - e.g. during unloading - the valve will let air into the tank.High-velocity P/V valves are used on tankers for both inland and seagoing vessels.

ClassificationApproval: GL no.: 15 589 - 00 Lux, IMO MSC/Circ. 677, MSC/Circ. 1009

Specific marine systemsPlate heat exchangers

Maritime products CB-17-001 page 488

2008

Design and functionPlate heat exchangers consist of a frame with a number of plates. This frame is assembled as specified with the requirednumber of plates.

Each plate is fitted with a gasket, so that the plates form a single closed system of parallel channels. The medium flowsaround the other plate in an opposing direction. Very efficient heat transfer is accomplished by this means.

Benefits

InletThe construction of the inlet features diagonal grooves. This brings about an even distribution of the liquid. At the same time, maximum use is made of the entire plate surface.

Plate patternThe plate is constructed in a herringbone pattern. Even with the liquid flowing at low speed, maximum turbulence is obtainedwhich leads to a very good heat transfer. The plates are available in two versions: thermally short and thermally long. Both versions differ in their individual thermalcharacteristics, pressure loss and thermal yield.

ReinforcementTo reinforce the gasket, a deep groove has been pressed into the plate. This design guarantees that the plate is adequatelysupported and that the gasket is effectively clamped.

The gasketThe design of the gasket ensures it will stay flexible even after a long period. The inlet gasket has a second layer, with aso-called "drain" area, which makes it impossible for the two liquids to mix.

Plate slotsThe plates are designed with a lock which prevents movements caused by great fluctuations in pressure. This design also guarantees that the plates are fitted in the correct way.

Differential pressureThe supporting points on every plate ensure high stability even at high differential pressures.

Installation and serviceThe Sondex plate heat exchangers for marine service are designed in such a way that all the connections are fitted on oneside (the head) of the heat exchanger. This means that the heat exchanger can be opened for maintenance or repairs withoutdismantling the pipework. The heat exchanger frames have been designed to be easily opened and closed. Only a minimumnumber of bolts are used, and the rearmost press-on plate is equipped with a guide roller.

FlexibilityThe plate heat exchangers are assembled from a number of standard components which allows for great flexibility. Plates andgaskets are designed to be used for both left and right-handed plates, simply by rotating the plates 180°. A potential increaseor decrease in the capacity requires only a very simple modification. This is in contrast to conventional heat exchangers, whichcannot be modified for other capacities and so have to be entirely replaced. The plate heat exchangers can also be designed as multi-coolers: with the aid of a single medium, another two media can becooled. Example: seawater as a cooling medium for drinking water and lubricating oil within one and the same plate heatexchanger.

Specific marine systemsFresh water makers

Maritime products CB-18-001 page 490

PrincipleEconosto fresh water makers make use of the heated cooling water of diesel engines to produce pure drinking water. Byvaporising seawater under high vacuum, this is even possible at temperatures of below 48 °C.Of course, steam can also be used as a heat source.

ConstructionThe distillation process is based on two titanium plate heat exchangers, with one functioning as a vaporiser, and the other asa condenser.

Fresh waterThe pure, distilled water is pumped out with an integrated fresh water pump andis continuously checked using a salinometer. The salinometer checks that the preset reading of between 1 and 10 ppm is notexceeded. If the reading is exceeded, the water will be automatically returned to the salt water inlet pipe.

CapacitiesThe fresh water makers are available in several models with capacities of between 1 and 150 tons/24 hours. These models, SFD3,5 to SFD245, are shown in the drawings.

Ordering information• Water temperature of the diesel engine cooling water or other source• Quantity of cooling water available• Required capacity in tons/24hours.• Options such as water softening, chemical additives and filters• Voltage of the pump 24VDC or 110/220/380/440 VAC
