11.3 NORTHERN SPECIALTY – 04/11/02 FABRICATED FITTINGS There is no ASTM for fabricated fitting dimensions. However, the pipe used to fabricate Northern Specialty’s fittings comply with AWWA C906-90 and ASTM D-1 248 requirements for Type III, Class C, Category 5, Grade P3408 polyethylene material. Other reference specifications include: ASTM 714, ASTM D-3350, ASTM D-3035. Mitered fittings are manufac- tured from angular cut pipe segments. Due to this configuration, stresses are greater than those imposed on pipe of the same size and DR. In order to sup- ply mitered fittings that will meet or exceed the design pressure of the pip- ing system, Northern Specialty will man- ufacture the fittings(s) from heavier wall pipe 25% greater than that of the pipe. The fitting outlet ends may be machined to the desired DR. Fabricated fittings intended for use in industrial non-pressure and/or low pressure services shall be manufactured from the same diameter and DR rating as used in the piping system. The pressure rating of these fittings is approximately 75% of straight pipe of the same DR. Fabricated fittings can be sup- plied with either flanged, screwed, grooved and/or plain end for field butt fusion to the piping system. Northern Specialty can also fiberglass wrap the fitting(s) and/or remove the internal bead when needed. INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS Fabricated fittings require that certain precautions be taken when installing them into a piping system. Northern Specialty recommends that the installer use spreader bars or nylon straps to help prevent damaging mitered fittings. It is strongly recom- mended that for installations involving long sections of butt fused pipe, the fittings should have at least one end flanged on the main, to allow for post assembly alignment. TESTING AWWA When needed for AWWA, fittings shall be prepared and tested according to ASTM D1598 test method. The fitting shall survive, without failure, a test pressure of four (4) times the pipe pressure class when the test pressure is applied for five (5) seconds. Fittings will comply with AWWA C901, C906, and AWWA Section 4.5.1, 4.5.2., 2.2.9., 2.2.1.. The first fitting of a par- ticular size and configuration made during a production run, and thereafter every fiftieth fitting, will be subjected to the five-second pressure test. Custom testing required by end user. Northern Specialty will test fittings as needed by the end user. SPECIFICATIONS FOR HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE FITTINGS

FABRICATED FITTINGS

There is no ASTM for fabricated fittingdimensions. However, the pipe used tofabricate Northern Specialty’s fittingscomply with AWWA C906-90 andASTM D-1 248 requirements for TypeIII, Class C, Category 5, Grade P3408polyethylene material. Other referencespecifications include: ASTM 714,ASTM D-3350, ASTM D-3035.

Mitered fittings are manufac-tured from angular cut pipe segments.Due to this configuration, stresses aregreater than those imposed on pipe ofthe same size and DR. In order to sup-ply mitered fittings that will meet orexceed the design pressure of the pip-ing system, Northern Specialty will man-ufacture the fittings(s) from heavier wallpipe 25% greater than that of the pipe. The fitting outlet ends may bemachined to the desired DR.

Fabricated fittings intendedfor use in industrial non-pressureand/or low pressure services shall bemanufactured from the same diameterand DR rating as used in the pipingsystem. The pressure rating of thesefittings is approximately 75% ofstraight pipe of the same DR.

Fabricated fittings can be sup-plied with either flanged, screwed, grooved and/or plain end for field buttfusion to the piping system. NorthernSpecialty can also fiberglass wrap thefitting(s) and/or remove the internalbead when needed.

INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS

Fabricated fittings require that certainprecautions be taken when installingthem into a piping system.

Northern Specialty recommendsthat the installer use spreader bars ornylon straps to help prevent damagingmitered fittings. It is strongly recom-mended that for installations involvinglong sections of butt fused pipe, thefittings should have at least one endflanged on the main, to allow for postassembly alignment.

TESTING

AWWAWhen needed for AWWA, fittings shallbe prepared and tested according toASTM D1598 test method. The fittingshall survive, without failure, a testpressure of four (4) times the pipepressure class when the test pressure isapplied for five (5) seconds. Fittingswill comply with AWWA C901, C906,and AWWA Section 4.5.1, 4.5.2.,2.2.9., 2.2.1.. The first fitting of a par-ticular size and configuration madeduring a production run, and thereafterevery fiftieth fitting, will be subjectedto the five-second pressure test.

Custom testing required by end user.Northern Specialty will test fittings asneeded by the end user.

Quality Assurance.Northern Specialty will comply withfusion procedures set forth by the pipemanufacturer(s), fusion equipmentmanufacturer(s), Title 49, Code ofFederal Regulations 192.283, PlasticPipe Institute TR-33, AWWA Section2.4.2., and ASTM D3261. The use ofMcElroy DataLoggers for fusion moni-toring shall be used in production runsfor 6” - 63” fittings.

Northern Specialty shall takeadequate measures in the checking ofincoming pipe to ensure the pipe isfree of cuts, scratches and other dam-ages. Each fitting shall be visuallychecked inside and outside for defects.Any presence of defects shall be causeto reject the fitting. .

MARKING REQUIREMENTS

Marking on the fitting shall include thefollowing whenever possible:

a. Nominal size and OD base(such as 12 in. IPS)

b. Standard material code designation (such as PE3408)

c. Dimension ratio (such as SDR-17)

d. Pressure class (such as PC40)

e. AWWA designation number (AWWA C906-90)

f. NSS production code
