From the President
Greetings All,
I must admit first off, that I am not much of a writer, keyboards and the like tend to scare me. It is the "one finger" process that gets me. The brain overruns the fingers all the time. So, if anyone knows of a voice to text programme that is happy with Linux, Libre Office or Abiword, please let me know.
There are a number of thank you's I would like to make on your behalf, to those who have "retired" from office with the Group. Peter, Adam and Grant, thank you for your efforts.
Over the last weeks we have had some contact with Auckland Council regarding the ground lease for the club rooms, all of them appearing to be favourable. I am hoping that we will have more news for our April meeting.
Other short notice activities have appeared since our last General Meeting
Firstly, St Pats Parade Sunday 13th March. Contact Laurie ZL1ICU.
Then two others, both on March 19th with more details at the monthly meeting.
Working Bee at Klondike. Some elevated, more at ground level. Contact Vaughan ZL1VH.
“Meet the Neighbours” at the Clubrooms, is an Auckland Council sponsored event. Finan-cial support is available.
Contact Dave ZL1TIA
I am looking forward to seeing you at the Meeting and also hearing ideas for speakers and ac-tivities for the Club.

Minutes of General Meeting and Special General Meeting held
Monday 8 February 2015
Present: 10 Members as per attendance book.
Apologies: ZL1JD, ZL1SK, ZL1EME, ZL1UEX
The meeting was chaired by Peter ZL1UKG. Peter opened the meeting saying that we would first have
a General Meeting to handle a number of items of general business, and this would be followed by the
Special General Meeting to amend various sections of our Constitution.
General Business:
1. Letter from NZART re pledge to assist with costs of Unitary Plan legal assistance. Spectrum
November 2015 Page 9 records the minutes of the VHF Group October 2015 General Meeting
where approval was given for the payment of $1000. ZL1TTE advised that he would need an
invoice for this amount from NZART before making payment.
2. Renewal of Clubrooms Lease: ZL1UKG reported on progress. Our application to renew was
lodged prior to the due date. Since then, he has received advice from Ron Johnson, Auckland
Council Community Lease Advisor, that he would like to visit the clubrooms. Peter advised
that in the absence of any feedback from the Committee, he had selected a date of Tuesday 16
February at 7.30pm for this visit and that other Branch members may wish to be present at that
time.
Arising from this visit was a need to tidy up inside the clubrooms. To help with this, there will
be a working bee on Saturday 13 February. Peter ZL1UKG will arrange the hire of a rubbish
skip. Ross ZL1EME will bring a trailer for scrap metal. It was noted that the current graffiti on
the clubrooms and container will need to be painted out.
3. Presentation to Puketapapa Community Board. The VHF Group has received and invitation to
address the next Board meeting, on Thursday 25 February. Those attending are Peter ZL1UKG,
Laurie ZL1ICU, Marlene ZL1MYL (WARO) and Doug ZL1TTE. The presentation will be on
more than we are just a club with a building.
SPECTRUM http://www.qsl.net/zl1bq 5 Vol 53 March 2016
4. From the AGM: Club has vacancies for President, Vice-President and Secretary. Acting chair-
man Peter ZL1UKG asked the meeting for nominations for the vacant positions.
ZL1ICU nominated Dave Dingley ZL1TIA for the position of President. Seconded ZL1TTE.
There being no further nominations, ZL1UKG moved / ZL1VH seconded that nominations be
closed. The motion that ZL1TIA be elected President was carried unanimously.
ZL1TIA advised that he would need to attend the meeting with the Council Community Advi-
sor.
Peter ZL1UKG then called for any nominations for the position of Vice-President and Secretary.
ZL1TIA proposed Peter ZL1UKG for the position of Immediate Past President. Some discus-
sion followed. Peter declined to accept the position as he plans to move out of central Auck-
land.
ZL1TIA nominated Marlene ZL1MYL for the position of Secretary. Seconded ZL1TTE. It was
noted that this would create a vacancy on the committee which would need to be filled. Moved
ZL1TIA, seconded ZL1UKG that nominations be closed. Carried. The motion that ZL1MYL
be elected Secretary was carried unanimously.
5. Klondyke Lighting Strike – on Monday 1 February “something” happened at the Klondyke
Road repeater site – most probably a near lightning strike and by Wednesday 3 Feb it was estab-
lished that neither battery charger was working and the D-Star Gateway was not working. All
other repeaters and link equipment at the site were working OK. New battery chargers were
ordered and Laurie ZL1ICU made a site visit to check the D-Star gateway computer. He was
also able to confirm that both battery chargers had no output. On Saturday 6 February Vaughan
ZL1VH visited the site and fitted two new 80A battery chargers. Both chargers ran at maximum
output (84A) for about three hours to bring the batteries back up to float voltage.
ZL1ICU reported on his activity to get the D-Star Gateway operational again. Contact was lost
with the gateway at 4 seconds past 2pm on Sunday 31 Jan. The UPS did not send a battery
backup status message. Also found that he could not ping the D-Star equipment. He contacted
Compass Communications who advised that did not have a problem. They had sent a technician
to site to reset their equipment – the 230V AC circuit breaker had tripped. While at site he
noted that one of the battery chargers had no 230V AC supply and on checking, found that the
circuit breaker had tripped but was not showing as being in the “off” position. Resetting the
circuit breaker restored power to the battery charger but there was still no output. The D-Star
Gateway computer power supply was working but the motherboard was dead. A new computer
supplied to restore the gateway.
ZL1VH gave an explanation re the cost of the new chargers, that he wanted to get two identical
models, that the existing 60A versions were out of stock, and in order to get the site back up and
running, had to purchase two of the next size up, the Victron Centaur 80A chargers.
One of the two original chargers was on display at the meeting and showed significant energy
between the negative output and ground had blown the wire leads off two 1nF 1000V disc ce-
ramic capacitors. Discussion followed on improving the protection using devices such as varis-
tors and gas discharge tubes with contributions from ZL1GSG and ZL1TOF. ZL1VH will in-
vestigate options and report back.
SPECTRUM http://www.qsl.net/zl1bq 6 Vol 53 March 2016
Discussion followed on the need to upgrade the old switchboard/circuit breaker panel at
Klondyke. The meeting agreed that this should be done as the existing panel is over 20 years
old and was not new when originally installed. ZL1VH will cost up a replacement and report
back. An electrical inspector will be needed to certify the repair work.
ZL1TTE moved, ZL1MYL seconded that ZL1VH be reimbursed for the purchase of the two
new battery chargers, total cost $3061.50. Carried. If repaired, we would use one of the old
battery chargers as a back-up at Klondyke. ZL1VH will attempt to repair when time permits.
6. The meeting received a visitor – Graham, a neighbour and member of the local tennis club. He
advised that they were about to renew their lease on the tennis court building and asked if we
were aware of the need to renew. Peter ZL1KG said yes, we were well on the way with our re-
newal and offered to help with any information we had.
The General Meeting closed at 2058.
Peter ZL1UKG then opened the Special General Meeting.Special General Meeting held Mon-
day 8 February 2016 at 2100.
Peter ZL1UKG introduced the Special General Meeting which was called to update the Auck-
land VHF Group Constitution. Specifically, the Constitution amendments were:
In Section 3(b) update the reference to the NZART Constitution Part 2.1 (c) (ii)
In Section 3(j) update Junior Member to be under the age of 18 years
In Section 10(c) add wording to allow the committee to pay the annual Insurance Pre-
mium in excess of the amount approved by the Annual General Meeting.
In Section 12(a) update the Treasurer’s duties to produce duly reviewed accounts to the
Annual General Meeting.
In Section 16(a) update the reference to the NZART Constitution Part 9.1 c, d.
Peter ZL1UKG explained that the updates to the VHF Group Constitution were to bring the ref-
erences into line with the current NZART Constitution which had been updated and various
paragraph references had been re-numbered. Moved ZL1TIA, Seconded ZL1TTE that items 1
and 5 to bring the NZART and VHF Group constitutions into line be approved. Carried.
Item 2 – Age of Junior Member. Peter ZL1UKG introduced this - Our current constitution has
this set at 15 years. It was felt that making this 18 years of age could encourage younger mem-
bers to join the club. Some discussion followed. Moved ZL1UKG, seconded ZL1TIA that we
make the age for a Junior Member 18 years. Carried.
SPECTRUM http://www.qsl.net/zl1bq 7 Vol 53 March 2016
Item 4 – update the Treasurer’s duties to produce duly reviewed accounts instead of the current
“duly audited” accounts. ZL1UKG explained that this was being introduced due to changes in
the audit procedure introduced by the New Zealand Society of Accountants. An “audit” now
required a much more stringent process with associated costs. A review is a lesser process and
better suits our type of organisation. Peter ZL1UKG noted that there was another clause in our
Constitution which also needed to be amended in conjunction with this – clause 5(e) also calls
for an audited financial statement. The meeting agreed that this would need to be amended at a
later date and could not be done at this Special General Meeting as our members had not re-
ceived that required notice.
“Moved ZL1TIA, Seconded ZL1UKG that Clause 12(a) of the VHF Group constitution be
amended to read ‘duly reviewed’.” Carried.
Item 3 – special approval to pay the annual insurance premium. Discussion on the need for this
followed the introduction of this item. After explanations from ZL1UKG and ZL1VH, the
meeting agreed to add the following sentence to paragraph 10(c) of the constitution:
“An exception to the ratification by a General Meeting is made for the payment of the annual
insurance premium”. Moved ZL1UKG, Seconded ZL1VH, Carried.
The Special General Meeting closed at 2124. This was followed by a supper provided by
Marlene ZL1MYL.

VHF DX weekend Contest report I’m sure the mainland of New Zealand saw better weather and tropo conditions during the contest compared to the rest of the country. One noteworthy spot on the VK-Logger was with Mark ZL3TKI from CHCH hearing the ZL2WHO/b 1296.271 MHz beacon from Waipuna at 505 km. The path distance indicated enhanced tropospheric ducting. Up in the far north the weather and light rain was blowing from the east and not pleasant. Despite that Nick ZL1IU worked Simon ZL2BRG at Mount Climie at 660 km. Wayne ZL2BKC operated portable from Grenada Rise and Hawkins Hill and Simon ZL2FAE ventured out in the field and tested the radio path into the south Island. Two contacts of note were with Simon ZL2BRG to Greq ZL1GSG on 70 cm at 469 km (Wellington to Auckland) and Simon ZL2BRG to Roger ZL3RC at 345 km on 23 cm (Wellington to Christchurch). We thank those Wellington stations for activating high hills around the Wellington region. Wellington is mid path central New Zealand and this gives excellent coverage to both the north and south. From the far south David ZL4DK and Adam ZL4ASC teamed together and operated Otago Branch 30 for NZART, ZL4AA, from Mount Cargill Dunedin. They easily worked into the flats of Christchurch on 70 and 23 cm and further north on lower bands. On a final note Ken ZL3OZ operated portable from Mount Horrible and by looking at logs also operated mobile from different locations. No station needs to be fixed to one particular location and this is en-couraged. An added feature; A suggestion was received from a ZL2 operator from the Wellington region that it would be good to list the “Top Home Stations” in the results which will highlight that you can do well if operating all periods of the contest from home. From the hill topping perspective home stations play an integral part, without home stations we won’t have much of a contest. I would have to agree. This has been included and will be presented in future results. Thanks to all those that participated and enjoyed the contest weekend! Stephen Hayman - ZL1TPH

Surplus parabolic dish clearance Auckland VHF Group, Inc.
The Auckland VHF Group had an opportunity to assist a company that was about to write off some old stock that had never been used in the field. The dishes were mostly made by RFS of France and have size SU2 corresponding to a nominal diameter of 0.6 m. Rim to rim it is 0.75 diameter. Some of the dishes have feeds but they are not on Amateur bands. Weight is of the order of 8 – 12 kg. The awkward shape makes it desirable to pick them up from the club-rooms. This size is ideal for 6 cm and 3 cm bands and acceptable for 9 cm. F/d is not specified for these dishes but measurement to the centre of the dipole of a “splash plate” feed is approx 19.6 cm above the surface (SU2 35AN). Where there is an existing feed the position can be recorded. Mounting hardware to a pole is available for several of the dishes for pointing in fixed directions as point to point links. The plate which mounts the feeds could be modified to support a feed built to match the dish or a new circular plate could be cut or turned from sheet aluminium if starting from scratch. The asking price is NZ$ 50 each. The SU2 35AN dish has a feed for 3.4 – 3.6 GHz with an N connector and should be usable at 9 cm (3.3 – 3.41 GHz). The price for this model is $60 each.

We have heaps of parts from dismantled commercial analog TV gear – transmitters, filters, cir-
culators, patch panels, power supplies, cabinets. Too much to list individually, so come along
to the clubrooms and have a look
And there’s
more….

Motorola Oncore VP GPS Receivers
The VP Oncore is Motorola’s original credit card-sized 8-channel GPS receiver. It
measures just 2” x 3 1/4” x 1/2”, has very low power requirements, and is well suited
for embedded applications. The VP Oncore has the capability of acting as a DGPS reference
station for greater position accuracy.
The units on offer have been in storage for some time, and the tinplate screen covers show some
signs of corrosion – see photo. Most of the units have a sticker attached saying “Prog NMEA”
and are likely to output data in NMEA V2.0 serial format.
Interface is via a 10-pin board header – see reference below for pinout details. Power supply is
5.0v +/-0.25V. Module requires an external active GPS antenna (5V power supplied by re-
ceiver module). GPS connector is a snap-on type OSX. Output data includes a 1PPS (one
pulse per second) output and TTL level Tx and Rx data lines.
More details can be found at : ftp://ftp.tapr.org/gps/motorola/oncore.eng.notes.pdf
