From the ex President

Currently the Lease of the land where the clubrooms sits will expire on 31 January 2016 and the conditions for a new Lease are being met. Until the Lease is settled the terms allow roll-over on a month by month basis during negotiation. A council Community Lease advisor will visit the clubrooms later this month. On Thursday 25 February we will make a presentation to the Puketepapa Local Board at their business meeting. To this end there will be an Open Day at the club rooms on Saturday 13 February where the Trading Table will be open from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm to members of all clubs in the area. While this is going on there will be a clear out, re-organise and clean up at the club rooms. There will be a skip that visitors will be invited to peruse and take home the Treasures that the VHF Group is unable to find room for in preparation for the Council visit. We discovered at the AGM in November a clause in the Constitution preventing amendments being made without three months notice being given to the members. The February meeting

is now here for the SGM to consider the changes. See the December or February Spectrum for a full list of the proposed changes. At the AGM there were no applicants for the position of president. It is likely that the ma-jor workload to set the club on a stable course will have been completed once the Lease discussed above has been settled. The next incumbent should not have to face the many issues of the past three years. The secretary retired due to ill health and the vice president will be working in Canada for several years. At each meeting of the club nominations for these positions must be sought until they are filled. Please consider giving something back to the club for the benefits that it has helped provide for you.

At the first committee meeting in January the committee discussed how to organise the year. If the vacant positions cannot be filled the constitution clause 10(e) of the VHF Group requires that the committee appoint one of its members to fill the position on a temporary basis. Clause 8(a) requires that no member shall hold more than one position. There will be a supper provided to follow the SGM to make up for the weather conditions that prevailed at the annual day of the Social BBQ which normally begins the club year. The ZL1BQ call sign took to the field at a conveniently close site to the city near Puhoi. The weather was relatively kind with brief showers overnight and only gentle wind. It was

obstructed to the north by Moir’s Hill but late on Sunday it did not prevent a brief opening to VK4 being pursued. The team was composed of Vaughan ZL1VH, Peter ZL1UKG, Ross ZL1EME and Simon ZL1SWW with his collection of microwave equipment. See the results elsewhere in Spectrum. ZL1BQ was clearly ahead of the field. The Lease application to the Council made out contesting to be one of our virtues by stating that when we go out in the contest the club offers its members the opportunity to make contacts and to test the performance of their equipment over long distances. The AREC section is very valuable for this purpose as well. It is one of the justifications for the privilege of having spectrum available to use by amateurs. “The New Zealand amateur radio licence refers specifically to Article 25 of the International Radio Regulations where Amateur operators are encouraged to prepare for and meet communication needs in support of disas-ter relief” was quoted in our application. The program for the year is being investigated with invitations to speakers being sent out. More details in the next issue. Also coming up is the start of the Klondyke maintenance sea-son. Vaughan ZL1VH expects a date in early March to be announced for the annual health check and maintenance program. Details will be circulated by email to give members enough notice to take part. This will include the type of work to be done. There is nothing like a breath of slat air blowing off the Tasman to give you a sense of wellbeing.

From the Editor

Spectrum won’t be as colourful as it was in Stephen Hayman’s hands if pictures of current ac-tivities are not offered to the Editor for use in Spectrum. While the editor has a collection de-veloped when he had time to do amateur radio himself, they may not represent your current interests. When there is an activity you would like to share please send the picture files along with captions to the Editor (For contact details see page 2). The role of the editor was to assemble the material supplied into the format you received in your Inbox. In this case the news was supplied by the President and occasionally the mem-bers. Stephen researched the pictures which fitted topical events. Being the editor doesn’t mean writing all of the copy. There has already been an email suggesting what the editor might do to make Spectrum more interesting. If the copy is available the editor can use it, otherwise he may have to interview his typewriter when time permits to come up with opin-ion which may differ from the facts as you know them. Operator comments

Very pleased to work ZL2BRG on 10 GHz for the first time in a contest

Conditions were well below average this year. It was a real struggle to work some of the dis-tance stations

Conditions seem very flat over the weekend and signals really only seemed to be favouring the high site portable stations. I wish more stations would see the benefits of using decent pre-amps too…

One Field station consistently calling CQ on 50.110 and moving the answering stations to 50.150 to exchange contest numbers. That consistent CQing on 50.110 seems to be "contest activity" which is contrary to Clause 15 (and the intention of it)

One Field station making numerous contest contacts on 50.110 for the next 2 hours so I was unable to work non-contest SI and VK stations seen on VK logger at this time.

A pretty average contest, No DX on 6, miserable condx, 30-40 knots and horizontal freezing rain

As always, a most enjoyable contest, despite the very poor propagation! Many thanks to the field stations who braved the wet, wind and cold! The highlights for me were the 2 m meteor scatter contact with Errol ZL2IT and also the booming SSB signal just for a few minutes of Bob ZL1RS on 6 metres. That may have been a meteor too?

Well I had my first go on the contest using the old TS700 & it went as good as expected, but the 2 meter band didn’t seem too good

Unfortunately pointing beam south increases noise to S7, which is a recent thing, probably from Aucklanders shifting down here with a plasma, so as a result could hear Ray in the noise only, & unreadable

ZL2TC operated from Mt Curl, West of Hunterville; Weather was rubbish, too windy to erect antennas on Saturday, Sunday cold and raining. Best DX was ZL3NW in Christchurch on 2 me-tres. Nothing heard from upper Nth. Is

It was a great that I was able to work on 6 bands, but it would have been even better if there would have been more than 2 stations on 32 cm, 6 cm and 3 cm

Conditions where the worst I’ve experienced for a while and all sigs where way down. It was raining from around noon on Saturday and didn't stop till around midday Sunday

Surplus parabolic dish clearance Auckland VHF Group, Inc.

The Auckland VHF Group had an opportunity to assist a company that was about to write off some old stock that had never been used in the field. The dishes were mostly made by RFS of France and have size SU2 corresponding to a nominal diameter of 0.6 m. Rim to rim it is 0.75 diameter. Some of the dishes have feeds but they are not on Amateur bands. Weight is of the order of 8 – 12 kg. The awkward shape makes it desirable to pick them up from the club-rooms. This size is ideal for 6 cm and 3 cm bands and acceptable for 9 cm. F/d is not specified for these dishes but measurement to the centre of the dipole of a “splash plate” feed is approx 19.6 cm above the surface (SU2 35AN). Where there is an existing feed the position can be recorded. Mounting hardware to a pole is available for several of the dishes for pointing in fixed directions as point to point links. The plate which mounts the feeds could be modified to support a feed built to match the dish or a new circular plate could be cut or turned from sheet aluminium if starting from scratch. The asking price is NZ$ 50 each. The SU2 35AN dish has a feed for 3.4 – 3.6 GHz with an N connector and should be usable at 9 cm (3.3 – 3.41 GHz). The price for this model is $60 each.

sume later in the year so keep an eye out for announcements in Spectrum.

NEW – NEW - NEW

culators, patch panels, power supplies, cabinets. Too much to list individually, so come along

to the clubrooms and have a look

And there’s

Motorola Oncore VP GPS Receivers

The VP Oncore is Motorola’s original credit card-sized 8-channel GPS receiver. It

measures just 2” x 3 1/4” x 1/2”, has very low power requirements, and is well suited

for embedded applications. The VP Oncore has the capability of acting as a DGPS reference

station for greater position accuracy.

The units on offer have been in storage for some time, and the tinplate screen covers show some

signs of corrosion – see photo. Most of the units have a sticker attached saying “Prog NMEA”

and are likely to output data in NMEA V2.0 serial format.

Interface is via a 10-pin board header – see reference below for pinout details. Power supply is

5.0v +/-0.25V. Module requires an external active GPS antenna (5V power supplied by re-

ceiver module). GPS connector is a snap-on type OSX. Output data includes a 1PPS (one

pulse per second) output and TTL level Tx and Rx data lines.

More details can be found at : ftp://ftp.tapr.org/gps/motorola/oncore.eng.notes.pdf

$20.00 each – limited quantity.
