A range of AF modes are available to suit the requirements of any situation. In Single AF mode, only one of the 11 focal points is selected. Group Area mode selects the three or four adjacent points. In All Points mode, sharpness is calculated on the basis of an evaluation of all 11 points.
The layout of the 11-point AF sensor system was determined by astatistical analysis of the position of primary subjects in thousandsof photographs. Interviews with countless professional photogra-phers were also conducted.

sensor that was developed as a component for the aero-space industry sends information about the tiniest vibrationsto supersonic motors that compensate for the vibrations bycounteracting their effects. This makes a tripod less impor-tant. Positioning the image stabiliser in the camera body rather than in the lens has a number of advantages: theimage quality that can be achieved at this location avoidscompromises caused by optical factors, lens design can bemore compact, and the image stabilisation effect works forall Four Thirds lenses. This even applies to fisheye and ex-treme wide-angle lenses, and holds for all manufacturersparticipating in the standard.

The most effective dust protection system available safeguards against imperfections in images.
It is almost impossible to prevent dust from getting in-side a camera body while lenses are being changed. Yet just one particle of dust on a sensitive sensor surface can lead to serious adverse effects for image quality. Olympus’ Supersonic Wave Filter (SSWF) was the world’s first dust protection system. Thanks to con-tinual improvements, it is still the most effective. Positionedin front of the sensor, the Supersonic Wave Filter removesdust at lightning speeds with the help of supersonic vibra-tions at more than 30,000Hz. This powerful technologyfunctions at a molecular level where shaking motions andstatic charges are no longer effective.
Solid magnesium body with all-round protectionagainst dust and moisture.
In order to be ready for any challenge at any time and under any conditions, the E-3’s body is constructed to beextremely robust as well as dust and water resistant. Allimportant components including the built-in flash and LCDscreen are sealed against the effects of sand, dust, rain andwater drops. Made of a “thixomold” magnesium alloy, thebody is exceptionally durable, solid and lightweight.
A wide selection of ZUIKO DIGITAL Pro and Top Pro lensesalso includes models that are protected against water anddust. As with the E-3 itself, these lenses are sealed to pro-tect the camera at all times.

Even before shooting begins, the Olympus E-3 can determine the way that colours aremanaged in an image. The Colour Spacefunction allows you to define the colour spaceof an image (Adobe RGB or sRGB) in ad-vance, so that image files are optimised foruse with devices such as printers, monitorsand image editing software at a later date.It is also possible to preset RGB saturation (forall three channels), as well as saturation levels for single channels and skin tones.

A comprehensive suite of settings and functi ocontrol and assurance for every shot.
Colour spaces. ISO Settings.
In both automatic and manual modes, light sensitivity settings range fromISO 100 to ISO 3200 in 1/3 EV. Image artefacts at high ISO values are dramatically reduced by the new TruePic III processing engine. The parameters for automatic ISO settings can be individually set, while thebracketing function of the E-3 automatically shoots three frames at differentISO settings.
Noise reduction.
This function reduces noise in the form of coloured pixels that can appearduring long exposures. Noise reduction automatically reduces noise to pro-duce clearer images. Two images are captured: one “normal” picture andone with the same exposure settings but a closed aperture. Noise is identi-fied in the “dark” picture and then processed out of the entire image file.
Preselect from five image modes.
Preselected and adjusted image toneparameters are available as five separatepicture effect modes: Vivid, Natural,Muted, Portrait and Monotone. Valuesand settings for contrast, sharpness andsaturation are able to be adjusted in fivesteps and can be saved as customisedpicture modes. The Monotone modealso offers a selection of filters and toneeffects.
Two sensors for precise white balance.
White balance is automatically calculated from data provided by a whitebalance sensor and the image sensor – the camera then automaticallydetects white in images and adjusts the colour balance accordingly. Foroptimal shooting in most common situations, eight different values rangingfrom 3000K to 7500K are available as white balance presets. In addition, aone-touch white balance function allows photographers to save up to fouroptimal white balance settings to suit conditions. Both settings can beadjusted to ±7 steps (1 step = 2 mired steps). The bracketing function isalso especially helpful in difficult lighting conditions. It automatically shootsa series of three versions of an image with different colour temperatures atintervals of 2, 4 or 6 steps.

There are three options for light metering: ESP (Electro Selective Pattern),centre-weighted averaging metering, and spot metering. With digital ESPmetering the camera measures light levels to calculate differences in 49 separate areas of the image. This takes various scene elements such as backlighting into consideration. Centre-weighted averaging meteringperforms average metering between the subject and background lighting, placing more emphasis on the subject at the centre. With spot metering, the camera measures a very small area around the centre of the subject. This area is defined by the spot metering area mark in the viewfinder, and
comprises around 2% of the totalimage area. An additional highlightcontrol function automatically cor-rects the exposure of light areas inthe centre of the image againstbright backgrounds, while shadowcontrol performs the reverse functionby improving dark objects in thecentre of an image with dark back-ground tones.
Under normal conditions the exposure (AE) and focus (AF) settingsare retained from the moment the shutter button is depressed halfway until the shutter is actually released. These settings can also
be saved using the AEL/AFL button (AE Lock and AF Lock).

The Tatsuno Philosophy. The quality of an image is determined by the quality of thelens used to produce it. The development of lenses whichmeet the stringent optical requirements of digital SLR pho-tography is a particular conceptual challenge. Not only mustcommunication with the camera body and processor bemastered, but technologies key to the subsequent proces-sing of images must also be considered – all the way to theprinter. Due to the strict standards that Olympus set for itsZUIKO DIGITAL lenses, there was never any doubt that thedevelopment and manufacture of these vital componentswould take place in-house. Since the days of Olympus’ OMseries of analogue SLR cameras, the Tatsuno facility in the
mountainous, high-tech Kami-ina region of Japan’s Naganoprefecture has assumed this responsibility. This is whereOlympus’ esteemed specialists practice their fine technicaland craft skills while sharing their experience, knowledgeand passion for the field of imaging. In an atmosphere ofutmost concentration, the latest automated production facilities exist alongside traditional work stations where individual pieces are hand-crafted, inspected and polished. This principle forms the foundation of Olympus’ renownedreputation in the field of optics and guides all future devel-opments.

A future-proof system you can depend on.
The Olympus E-3 is based on the Four Thirds System – an open standard that ensures inter-compatibility betweenmanufacturers. This allows the bodies and lenses of variousbrands to be mixed and matched in any number of combi-nations. The Four Thirds System was specifically developedfor the unique requirements of digital photography. This entails achieving the highest image quality possible byensuring a direct optical path to the image sensor, intelligentcommunication between the camera body and lens, light-
ness and compactness, and cost-effective, future-proofdesign. In addition, the type, size and mount of the lens hasbeen standardised, and distances between the lens mount, image plane and last lens element were precisely defined. The standard also prescribes the exact size of the imagecircle, with the lens mount being approximately twice thesize of the diagonal of the sensor. This allows for the construction of bright, near telecentric lenses that achieveoutstanding image quality.
The new ZUIKO DIGITAL SWD lenses join an already-extensive range.

The FL-50R electronic flash unit was specially developed for use in digital photography and utilises RC Data TransferTechnology. Boasting multiple adjustment modes, high-speed synchronisation and a large selection of accessories, this flash unit is the ideal complement to the Olympus E-3. It has a very powerful GN50 at a focal length of 42mm(equivalent to 85mm on a 35mm camera; ISO 100), andGN28 at a focal length of 12mm (equivalent to 24mm on a 35mm camera; ISO 100).
• The reflector can be tilted and swivelled.
• The Olympus E-3 enables flash synchronisation at all shutter speeds – 1/8000th sec. in FP mode.
• Flash coverage is automatically adjusted in several steps to corre-

spond to the focal length of the lens when zooming.
• In addition to manual settings, fast recycle intervals of as little as 1.3 seconds are possible (in combination with an external power source).
• The FLBA-1 bounce adapter can be mounted on the flash head to diffuse shadows, while the FLRA-1 reflector adapter softens the effects of bounce lighting. The FL-50R comes with both items, as well as the FLST-1 flash stand.
Olympus’ new RC Data Transfer Systemenables wireless communication betweenthe camera and special external flash unitssuch as the new FL-50R and FL-36R. No separate commander unit is requiredbecause all functions are triggered andcontrolled directly from the E-3’s integrat -ed flash. Depending on what lighting set-up you require, up to three separate flashgroups can be controlled directly from thecamera at one time. Settings and adjust-ments can be controlled from the SuperControl Panel on the LCD. Now it’s simpleand convenient to experiment with variouslighting options without having to worryabout cable clutter.
