Delivering Maximum Downhole Performance and ReliabilitySperryDrill® Positive Displacement Motors

Drilling conventional, horizontal and complex wells safely, efficiently and economically in today’s drilling environment requires the utmost in expertise and technology. Sperry Drilling services has applied its extensive engineering capability and decades of downhole experience to the development of the SperryDrill® fleet of positive displacement motors.

SperryDrill motors provide downhole torque and horsepower directly to the drill bit for drilling directional wells, improving rate of penetration and making corrections when drilling vertical wells. Based on the Moineau progressive cavity concept, these motors convert hydraulic power (pressure and flow) into mechanical power (torque and rotation). Using rig pump flow to create bit rotation allows the drillstring to remain stationary, so that the small bend near the lower end of the motor can be held in the desired orientation to drill a directional well. To drill straight, the motor can be safely rotated with the drill string (within limits) because the motor bent housing offset is so small. Rotating the motor nullifies the effect of the bend while adding additional torque and speed to the drill bit for faster rate of penetration (ROP) when drilling straight intervals.

Right Tool For The Job

A range of modular power sections is available to match the motor output to the specific requirements of each project and the style of bit. Sperry offers high-speed motors for drilling in harder formations, where diamond impregnated bits are preferred. For drilling in softer formations, where roller cone bits perform well, Sperry has slower speed motors that provide torque while minimizing the number of rotations on the bit bearings for longer life. When drilling with polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bits, Sperry recommends low and medium speed motors with very high torque output for maximum rate of penetration and long life downhole. Power units are available to address a wide range of speed, torque and fluid requirements, including conventional drilling muds, foam and air.

SperryDrill motors can be equipped with fixed or adjustable bent housings and rig-adjustable sleeve stabilizers for controlling the amount of curvature, or “dogleg”, that the motor produces down hole. The motors can be outfitted with a jetted rotor to increase the flow rate capabilities, as well as special bearing assemblies for high drillstring rotation rates and high bit pressure drops.

The SperryDrill motor can be configured for maximum performance in higher temperature environments by varying the amount of clearance or “fit” between the rotor and stator. Special elastomer formulations further enhance durability.

The SperryDrill® GeoForce® motor sets a new standard in motor performance. The GeoForce motor utilizes a machined stator with a consistent thickness of elastomer, which makes it extremely efficient and capable of 50-100% more torque and horsepower than standard motors. The GeoForce motor is capable of operating at temperatures up to 350 °F / 175 °C.

Tailored Technology

For tight TVD control applications, SperryDrill motors can be configured with an ABI™ At-Bit Inclination sensor within 0.6 meters / 2 feet of the drill bit (for most sizes) to give immediate feedback on inclination trends.

For geosteering applications, a GABI™ Gamma/At-Bit Inclination sensor adds azimuthal gamma readings. The GABI sensor is most useful when drilling long horizontal reservoir sections. The azimuthal detectors look up, down, and around the borehole to detect approaching bed boundaries so the wellbore can be steered to stay in the reservoir.

For extremely high build rate applications, the SperryFlex® and articulated Short Radius motors provide the required curvature and flexibility.

Real-time Optimization

SperryDrill motor performance can be monitored in real time using the innovative Max3Di™ drilling optimization software. This unique system accurately simulates the SperryDrill motor output based on the motor configuration, rig pump rate, weight on bit and other inputs. As drilling parameters change, the resulting motor performance is instantly presented. This provides directional drillers with a powerful “heads up” display that enables the SperryDrill motor to deliver maximum performance under all conditions. Motor life is greatly extended through this visual display as well as the use of audible alarms that are triggered when the motor’s limits have been exceeded.

Global Support and Quality Control

The SperryDrill motor is supported by an extensive network of service centers around the world, with access to local and global reliability databases, all connected to our SAP-integrated tracking system. Our comprehensive quality management system helps ensure that every motor receives the same consistent repair and maintenance process no matter where in the world the motor is serviced. An automated system of mandatory upgrade notifications helps ensure tight control of the entire global fleet. This results in reliable and predictable motor performance globally.

In addition, these motors undergo rigorous testing and modeling at our World Class Test Facility located in Nisku, Canada. This facility provides a realistic simulation of drilling conditions and is used to validate new motor designs and individual component upgrades before these new components are ever run downhole.

SperryDrill motors deliver maximum torque and horsepower while performing with excellent reliability under a wide range of environments. With configurations suitable for everything from conventional fluid drilling to air drilling, from standard to high temperature and high pressure environments, from long to short radius, the SperryDrill fleet of motors delivers maximum performance in every application.

The Max3Di™ software helps to maximize performance and reliability, while extending motor life. The software is also capable of monitoring our Geo-Pilot GXT rotary steerable system with integrated GeoForce motor.
