Pat: Yeah,absolutely.I’mreallyexcitedtotalktoyoubecauseIhave

twokidsmyself.They’reonlysixandthree,butthey’regoingtobe

teenagersonedayandthat’sreallywhoyouspeakto.Youhelp

teenagerslearnentrepreneurshipandIthinkthat’ssocool.Youalso

talktotheparentsofteenagersandkidstohelpthemencourage

theirkidstopursueentrepreneurship,too.Beforewegetintoall

thatandtalkaboutthatwholeworld,I’dlovetoknowmoreabout

yourstory.Whendidyoustarttogetinvolvedinentrepreneurship?

I’mthinkingaboutmyjourney,Ididn’tevenconsidermyselftobean

entrepreneuruntilalmostmylate20s.Hereyouare,startingoutas

ateenageralreadydoingthat.Why?What’syouroriginstory?

Eva: Myfamily,meandmybrother,wewerehomeschooledgrowing

upandandformyjuniorandsenioryearofhighschool,mymom

wantedmetocompletesomekindofmeaningfulproject,something

tojustgrowlifeskillsandcommunicationskills,andallofthatgood

stuff.Ihadtodoaproject,butIgottochoosewhatitwasabout.I

hadabsolutelynoideawhatIwantedtodomyprojecton,because

maybeIdidn’treallywanttodoaschoolproject,butIhadto.

Aroundthattime,myparentsweregoingthroughadivorceandmy

momwasjusttryingtogetbackonherfeetfinancially.Shewanted

toreadTheTotalMoneyMakeoverbyDaveRamsey,butshedidn’t

wanttospendthemoneybuyingthebook,sowewenttothelibrary

andtheyonlyhaditonaudiotape.At15,Ihadtolistentoitwith

herinthecar,whichwasnotthrillingatall.AsIwaslistening,Iwas

reallyunderstandingwhathewassaying.Moneyhadneverbeen

somethingthatwastabooinourfamily.Myparentshaddonethe

envelopesystemwithmeandmybrothersinceIwasfive,andhad

alwaysbeenveryopenwithusabouttheirbudgetandveryhands

onintryingtoeducateusinthosekindsofthings.

AsIwaslisteningtohim,toDave,andhe’stalkingaboutthese

babystepsthatyoucantaketogetyourselfoutofdebtandtostart

savingforyourretirement.Ijuststartedthinking,Idon’twantto

havetoeverfollowthisplanandtakethesesteps.Idon’teverwant

tohavedebtinthefirstplace.

OfcourseIhadbeenfortunateenoughthatmyparentshad

educatedmesomewhatonbudgeting.Istartedlookingonline,just

tofindsomemoreeducationandthere’sreallynotalotoutthere

forteens.Ofcoursethere’ssomanygreatresourcesforadultsto

helpthemmakeabudget,helpthemgetthemselvesoutofdebt,

helpthemsavefortheirretirement.There’sreallynoeducationfor

teensonlineandit’snothappeninginschools.Alotofparentsdon’t

feelqualifiedtogivethatkindofeducation,sokidsgrowupandwe

goofftocollegeandwegetamassiveamountofstudentloandebt

andcreditcarddebt,becausewedon’tknowanybetter.Noone

taughtushowtohandleourmoney.

AsIrealizedthosethings,IdecidedwhatIwantedmyprojectto

beandIlaunchedmywebsite,TeensGotCents.com,whereIblog

aboutthingslikehowtogetgooddealswhenyou’reshoppingand

howtosaveyourmoney,howtobudget,justbasicbudgetingskills,

howtogotocollegedebtfree,howtogetagreatpart-timejob,all

ofthosekindsofthings.AsI’vebeengrowingupandboughtmy

firstcar,goingtocollege,justsharingthoseexperiencesinhopesof

givingteensthatbasicknowledgeofhowtohandlemoneywisely,

becauseIbelievethatthesooneryoucandothat,thesooneryou

canstartreachingyourgoals.

Pat: Thatwasfortheschoolproject.You’vesincethen,justkeptitgoing.

Howmuchhasitgrownsincethen?

Eva: Ithasgrownalot.Ijustexpectedtobedoingthisfortwoyears,

untilIgraduatedandeveryyearitjustgrewandgrewandisnow

myfull-timebusiness.Iabsolutelyloveit.Oneoftheopportunities

thatI’vehadbecauseofthewebsiteisgettingtoattendFinCon,

whichiswhereImetyou,whichisofcourseaconferencethatisall

forpersonalfinancebloggers.Iwas17thefirsttimeIwent,coming

tothisveryprofessionalconference.Ihadneverbeentoanykind

ofconferencelikethatbefore.Ihadnoideahowthesepeoplewere

goingtoacceptmeorwhattheyweregoingtothinkofthis17year

oldwhohadbeenbloggingfortwomonths.

IwentandIwassoamazedwiththepeoplethatIfoundthere.Itis

suchagreatcommunityofbusinessownerswhoalthoughwe’reall

inthesamemarket,we’reallcompetitorsinsomeway.Everyone

justcomestogethertoencourageandsupporteachotherinwhat

Ithinkisabeautifulway.IhavetoattributealotofthesuccessI’ve

hadwithTeensGotCentstotheFinConcommunityhelpingmeout

andteachingmeeverythingIdidn’tknowwhenIwasfirststarting

andallowingmetoguestpostandbeontheirpodcastsandallof

thosekindsofthings.It’sbeenagreatcommunitytobeapartof

thatI’veabsolutelyloved.

Becauseofthat,goingtothisconference,Ithoughttomyself,hey,

IwouldbereallycoolifIhostedaconferenceforteens.IthoughtI

hadareallygoodideaatthetimethatIwouldhostaconferenceall

aboutpersonalfinancewhereteenscouldcomeandlearnhowto

avoidstudentloandebtandlearnhowtobudgetandallofthisstuff.

Ithoughtitwasgoingtobegreat,andthenIwokeuponemorning.

Iwasstillinthebeginningstagesofplanningthatandrealizedthat’s

themostboringconferenceever.Noone’sgoingtowanttocome

that.Noteenisgoingtowanttocometothatconference.

IputthatonthebackburnerandlastyearatFinConasIwas

sittingaroundalloftheseamazingotherentrepreneursand

businessowners,Ijust,itreallygotmethinkingthatIwishIhada

waytoconnectwithpeoplemyownageonthatkindofleveland

experiencethecamaraderiethatIwasexperiencingwitheveryone

atFinCon,withotherteens.Thatgavemetheideatohosta

conferenceforteenentrepreneurs,sothatiswhatIhavebeen

workingonforthepast,about10months,planningthisconference.

It’sTheTeenpreneurConference.It’sforteenswhohavetheirown

businessorwhoareinterestedinstartingone,orteenswhoarejust

interestedinentrepreneurshipingeneralcancome.We’regoing

tohaveclasseslikehowtowriteoutabusinessmodelandhowto

usesocialmediaeffectively,howtocommunicatewellwithyour

customers,allofthesetypesofthingsthatyouneedtoknowwhen

runningabusiness.

canexperiencethekindofatmospherethatI’dexperiencedatFin

Con,teenswhoaregettingbehindeachotherinarealway,and

supportingoneanotherandhavingfuntogether,andpromoting

oneanother.Thatismydream,andtheconferenceiscomingup

verysoonandI’mreallyexcitedaboutit.

Pat: Yeah,I’mexcitedtohearaboutit,too.Bythetimethisepisode

comesout,theconferencewillhavealreadyhappened.Bestofluck

toyouonthat.I’mreallyexcitedabouthearingaboutallthenews.

Peoplearegoingtolovejustthecontent.Iwishitwassomething

thatwasavailablewhenIwasinterestedinentrepreneurship,but

ofcourseIwasn’tinterestedinentrepreneurshipwhenIwasa

teenager.WhenIwasteenagerIwasintoplayingvideogamesand

hangingoutwithfriendsangoingtomoviesandstuff.You’renotthe

typicalteenager,Eva,Ithink.I’dlovetoknowfromyourownwords,

whydoyoufeelthatyouhaveallthisenergytodothesethingsthat

you’redoing?Whereisthisinspirationcomingfrom?

Eva: WhenIgottheideatohostthisconferenceforotherteen

entrepreneurs,Istartedjustrandomlycallingotherteenbusiness

ownersthatIwasfindingonlineandjusthavingconversationswith

themabouttheirbusiness.Itwassonicetotalktootherteenswho

arerunningabusinesslikeIam.Wehadsomuchincommon.One

ofthecommonthemesintheconversationsIwashavingwithall

ofthesedifferentteens,nomatterwhattheirbusinesswas,this

isolationthatwefeel,thatwefeellikewe’retheonlypersonour

ageinourcommunitydoingwhatwe’redoing.

Inasensethatisolationisveryreal,butit’snotnecessarilytrue.

Teenentrepreneurshipisbecomingmoreandmorepopular.There

areacrazyamountofteensouttherewhoareinsomewayrunning

theirownbusiness.Mygoalistocreateawaywherewecanfinally

allconnectwitheachotherandnotfeelsoaloneanymore,thatwe

canallsupporteachothertogether.

Eva: Idon’tthinkthatIdid,andIdon’tthinkthatitreallyhitmeuntil

maybeabouthalfwayintomysecondyearrunningTeensGotCents,

ofwhatIwasactuallydoingandthepossibilitythatIactuallyhad

ofwhereitcouldgoandthatIwasactuallyanentrepreneurand

thatthiswasabusinessandsomethingthatIcould,ifIworked

reallyhardat,Icouldgrowalot.Ithinkittookmeawhiletogetto

thatpointofjustfinallyrealizingthat.Ialsothinkmymomisahuge

supporterofeverythingthatI’mdoing,ismybusinesspartner,and

Ithinkthatifitwasn’tforhergivingmethosenudgesthatIneeded

todothethingsthatIhadbeendoing,itwouldn’thappenatall.I

thinkit’sreallyimportantfornotjustteens,buteveryonetohave

someonetosupportthemandtogivethemthosenudgeswhen

theyneedthem.

Pat: Yourmom’sverysupportive.IcouldseeheronTheTeenpreneur.

com.There’sanotefromhertootherparentsactually,underthe

parentstabifyouwanttocheckitout.There’sanicepictureof

bothofyouthere.Inthereitsays,“Tobehonest,Ican’treallythink

ofabetterwayforateentodaytolearnaboutlifeandsuccessand

whattheycanachievethroughhardwork,thanforthemtodevelop

theirownbusiness.”Ifullyagreewiththat.That’swhyI’malready

imploringtheseentrepreneurshipskillsintomyownkids,and

they’reonlysixandthree.TheseskillsthatI’velearnedinmylate

20sandearly30sarethingsthatIwishIknewalongtimeago.It’s

awesomethatyou’realreadyexperiencingthat.

IalsoknowthatIfeellikeifmyparentscametomeandthey’re

like,“Pat,youshouldstartabusiness,”I’dbevery,whenIwas

ateenagerI’dprobablypushback,becauseIpushedbackon

everythingtheysaidanyway.Howcouldaparentencouragetheir

kidstogetinvolvedwithentrepreneurshiporlearnalotoftheselife

changingskillsthattheycanlearnthroughbusiness?

Eva: Ithinksometimesthatyeah,there’scomingoutandsaying,“Hey,

youshouldstartabusiness,”canbehardbecauseasyouknow,

youcan’tjuststartabusiness.Ifit’snotsomethingyoucareabout

andnotsomethingyou’repassionateabout,it’snotgoingtowork.

Ifit’ssomethingthatisboringtoyou,thenyou’renevergoingtoput

everythingyouhaveintoit.Ithinkthatit’simportantasaparentto

justtobeencouragingtoyourteenandjustfostergrowthinthem

towheretheycancomeintoitthemselves.Oncetheyfindwhat

they’repassionateaboutandfindwhattheylove,thenmaybestart

givingthose,talkingtothemabout,“Hey,youcouldturnthisintoa

businessthisway,”or,“Wouldyoubeinterestedindoingthat?”That

kindofthing,butIthinkifit’ssomethingthatyou’regoingtotryto

force,Idon’tthinkthat’sgoingtoworkaswell.

Pat: Isthereanythingaparentcandotogivetheirsonordaughtera

tasteofentrepreneurshipwithoutactuallygoingfullyintoactually

startingabusinessallout?Istheresomethingonecandoto

actuallyintroducetheminasmallway,toseeifit’ssomething

they’reinterestedin?

Eva: Ithinkthatobviouslyifyou’reaparentandyou’reanentrepreneur

yourself,thatisthebestwaytodoit,butasfarasintroducingitto

theminsmallways,Ithinkjustmaybehavingthem,ifyoucould

justfindagroupofentrepreneurs,orifyouhadafriendwho’san

entrepreneurandmaybeyoujustwantyourchildtospendsome

timewiththem,justtoseewhatthey’relikeandheartheadvicethat

theyhavetogive,Ithinkthatwouldbeanincredibleopportunity.

Pat: Yeah,that’sawesome.There’sgoingtobeteenswhoarelistening

tothis,Eva.I’dloveforyoutotalktothemaboutwhattheycould

dotoactuallygetoutthere,getconnected.Obviouslythere’sthe

conferencewhichwillhavealreadyhappened.Maybe,hopefully

therewillbeanotheronenextyear,butevenbetweenthen,how

couldateenagergetinvolvedwithbusiness?Whataretheirfirst

steps?Howcantheyactuallystartthisthing?

Eva: Ithinkthemostimportantthingis,isjustthatyou’vegottoget

started.Sometimesit’sreallyhardtotakethatfirststep,butyou’ve

justgottodoit.Ithinkthatgoingoutintoyourcommunityand

networking,andwhatevergroupsandbusinesscirclesthatyou

can.IknowherelocalinJacksonvillewhereI’mfrom,thereisan

entrepreneurialmeetupthathappenseveryMonday.Idon’tgo

everyweek,butit’sbeenamazing.There’salwaysaninspirational

speakerandjustincrediblepeoplefromthecommunitythatIhad

gottentomakeawesomeconnectionswith.Ithinkifyoucanfind

somekindofgrouplikethattobeapartof,thatisanexcellent

placetostart.

Pat: Whatifateenisthinkingnobody’sgoingtotakemeseriously

becauseI’monlyateenager.Howwouldyourespondtothat?

Eva: Ithinkthat’saverydifficultthingtoovercome.That’swherethis

getshardandyouhavetobewillingtoputyourselfoutthere,which

issodifficult.It’sstilldifficultformetodoiteventhoughI’dhada

goodamountofpracticeatit.You’vejustgottobewillingtowalk

rightuptopeopleandshaketheirhandsandtellthemyourstory.

It’sahardthingtogetusedto,butit’sdefinitelyaskillthatyouneed

tolearn.

Pat: Whataresomeoftheskillsthatyoufeellikeactuallyaretoyour

advantageasateenager,oversomebodywho’solder?

Eva: There’stwosidestothis,becauseIdoseealotofpeoplenottaking

teensseriously,andIthinkthat’sahugeissue,butthenalso,if

you’reateenwho’srunningabusiness,who’sreallytryingtomake

adifferenceandtryingtomeetthisgoalofbeinganawesome

entrepreneur,that’salsogoingtocatchpeople’sattention.They’re

goingtowanttohearfromyou.Theyaregoingtobeimpressedby

you.Actuallysometimesbeingyoungerreallydoesplaystraightto

youradvantageanddoorsgetthrownopenforyouthatwouldn’tif

youwereanadult.

Pat: Right,asitdidwithyou.That’swhywe’rehereontheshowtalking

aboutteenagerrelatedthings,whichisreallycool.Whataresome

ofthebigmotivatorsforteensthatactuallydorunabusiness?

BecauseIknowforme,Ihaveafamilytotakecareof,andthat’s

reallywhat’sdrivingme.Whataresomeofheaspirationsthatyou

haveforexample,andotherteensmighthave?Becausealotof

teens,theydon’tnecessarilyknowwhattheywanttodowiththe

restoftheirlivesyet.That’sokay,butwhatarethosemotivators,

whicharereallyimportanttoactuallymotivateoneselftotakethe

actionrequiredtobuildasuccessfulbusiness?

Eva: Absolutely.OnebigmotivatorthatIthinkisimportantrightnow

isthatit’sreallyhardtogetapart-timejobasateen.Ispenttwo

monthslastsummerlookingforajob.Itwasextremelydifficult.

I’veheardseveralstoriesofteenswhohavetriedtogooutand

getajob,andcan’tfindone.Theystarttheirownbusinessinstead,

becausetheywanttobeearningmoney,andtheywanttobe

savingforcollegeorwhatever.Theyneedthatincome,butthey’re

justgoingaboutitadifferentwaythanthetraditionalgettingapart-

timejoboverthesummer.

Pat: Withyourwebsite,TeensGotCents,whichIthinkisareallysmart

position,becauseyou’reright,nobodyteachesthisstufftokids,let

aloneadultswhoarejustfiguringitoutalongtheway.Whathave

beensomeofthebiggeststrugglesthatyou’vehadwiththatsite

sinceyoustarted?Iknowyoustartedforaproject,andnowit’syour

full-timething,butasmostentrepreneursknow,it’snotallunicorns

andrainbows,thereisalotoftoughtimesandwhatweresomeof

thosetoughtimesforyouwhilehavingthissite?

Eva: Ithinksomeofthemostdifficulttimesweresometimesseveral

monthswouldgobywhereIwasseeingnogrowth,nothingreally

washappening,Iwashavingnoopportunitiescomingmyway,and

IwasdoingeverythingthatIcould,butjustnogrowth,notgaining

anynewreadersoranythinglikethat.Ithinkthosetimesarealways

reallyhard,becausethoseweredefinitelythetimeswhereI’mlike,

“Okay,I’mreadytobedonewiththisnow.Nothing’shappening.”

I’mreallygladthatIstuckthatout,justbecausesometimesyou

gottogetthroughacoupleofdryspellsbeforethingsreallystart

pickingup.

Ithinkanotherstruggleisjustfindingagoodwaytoconnectwith

youraudienceandwantingtobe,asateenespecially,youlook

atalloftheseotheramazingbloggers.Youandabunchofother

reallybigpeople,andyou’rejustlike,“Oh,Isowantthat,andI

wantitrightnow.Idon’twanttohavetodoanyoftheworkforit.

Ijustwantittohappen.”Ithinkformeinmymind,thathasbeena

struggleofjustknowingthatit’sgoingtobeaprocess.It’sgoingto

beajourney.It’sgoingtotaketimeandhardwork,andI’vegotto

bewillingtoputitinforthattohappen.

Pat: Yeah,that’sreallyimportant.Iknowthatkidsaregrowingupat

anagenow,orinerawherethingsarehappeningreallyfast.The

resultscanhappenmuchfaster,sobusiness,it’sstillgoingtotake

sometimetoseethoseresults.Ifyouhadtostartover,ifmaybe

yougoingbackinthepastandstartingfromscratchagain,whatare

someofthosethingsthatyouwoulddodifferentlysinceyoustarted

whatIwasdoing.Beforeitwasjustaschoolproject.Iwasputting

inthetime.Iwasworkingonit,andIreallyenjoyedit,butuntilIhad

thismomentof,“Oh,Icoulddothisfull-time.Icoulddothislong

term.Icouldgrowthisintosomethingreally,reallyawesome,it

wasn’tuntilthatmomentthatitreallyclickedforme.

Pat: Whendidthatmomenthappen?

Eva: IthinkitwasafterFinCon2014,maybe.ThatwasinNewOrleans.

IthinkIcameawayfromthat,Ihadsomeawesomementorsgive

mesomeadviceandhelpmeunderstandsomethingsthatIcould

dototakeittothenextlevel.Icameawayfromthatwiththese

specificstepsofthingsthatIcoulddotogrowTeensGotCentsand

that’swhenIrealized.Iwaslike,oh,thiscanbemorethanwhatit

isrightnow.

somakingsureI’mfulfillingalloftheobligationsthatIhavetoallof

thosepeople.Yeah,alotofwriting.

Pat: Atthattime,didyouhaveanyurgetodootherthings?Forexample,

IknowthatifIwasintoentrepreneurshipbackinmyteenageyears,

I’dbesotemptedtojustputthatasideandjustgooutwithmy

friends,becausethat’swhatIreallywantedtodo.Howdoesateen,

oranyonereally,balancethatorjustdofunthingsversusputting

downtheeffortweneedtotogetworkdone?

Eva: Thatishard,andthatwasdefinitelyastruggle.I’mjustlike,“Ugh,

I’mreallytiredofwriting.Idon’twanttodothisanymore.I’drather

bedoingothernormalteenagerthings.”Ithinkthat’swhereagain,

havingasupportsystemoffriendsorfamilyaroundyou,ismost

important.Forme,that’smymomjustremindingmewhyI’mdoing

thisandhowimportantitis,andcanholdmeaccountableto

actuallyfulfillthecommitmentsthatIhavetothisblogandtosome

ofmyotherclients.

Pat: Whatcanateendoiftheydon’thaveasupportsystemclosebylike

youdid?

Eva: Ithinkthatyou’vegottogetreallypracticalandyou’vegotto,

ifyouneedto,thenyouneedtomakeaplanandhaveatime

managementsysteminplacetomakesurethatyouaregettingall

ofyourworkdoneandeverythingthatneedstobeaccomplishedto

growyourbusinessbeforeyoucandothoseotherfunthings.Ithink

thattherecanbebalancethere.Idon’tthinkthatifyou’reateen

runningabusinessyoucan’teverhavefun,butIthinkit’simportant

foryoutohavethemindsetoffinishingyourwork,andthenmaybe

hangingoutwithyourfriendsordoingwhateveritisthatyouwant.
