Motivation

• There is a wide gap between theoretical/numerical and observational seismology

• Computational power is now such that 3D numerical approaches to wave propagation will enter routine data fitting procedures (e.g. source or structural imaging) or monitoring

• The scientific value of 3D simulation data is continuously increasing (e.g. earthquake scenario simulations, global wave propagation)

• There is little or no infrastructure supporting software development and large data volume handling in the Earth science community

• The community in computational seismology is fragmented

What is (was) missing? What is (was) missing?

- Earth Sciences curriculae usually do not provide training in numerical methods and/or parallel programming.

- There is little interaction between the more applied side of wave propagation (exploration) and the more general seismology (even though methodologies are very similar)

- We envisage substantial increase in the use of 3D methods in all fields of wave propagation

- Seismologists need a toolbox with verified open-source codes for 3D wave propagation
