The Southern African Asset Management Association (SAAMA) will host its sixth physical asset management conference from 14 to 16 May 2019 at Spier Wine Farm, Stellenbosch. SAAMA2019 will focus on the development of physical asset management in Southern Africa.

OLUWAKEMI AGUNBIADEREPRESENTING: Sasol SynfuelsTOPIC: Data integration – Unlocking potential insights to improve equipment reliability

Oluwakemi started her 10 year reliability career in the open cast mining industry before transitioning to the petrochemical industry. She is currently a senior reliability engineer supporting the gas production business of Sasol Synfuels. She has extensive experience with plant data analysis across a fleet of equipment which is used to highlight potential areas for improvement and optimisation. She is also experienced in conducting root cause analyses, developing maintenance strategies, conducting risk based inspections for pressure equipment, and compiling detailed equipment integrity studies.

NEZAR AL SHAMMASIREPRESENTING: Gulf Society for Maintenance & Reliability TOPIC: Maintenance, reliability & asset management excellence journey

Nezar is a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from San Jose State University (USA). He has been working in the field of maintenance, reliability and asset management for 38 years, the majority of which (32 years) was in Saudi Aramco, the National Oil & Gas Company of Saudi Arabia. During the past 10 years in Saudi Aramco, Nezar was the Corporate Maintenance Services Director and Exec Secretary of Saudi Aramco Maintenance Council. The main task of that organization is to develop and implement uniform corporate enhancement programs to become Best-in-Class in maintenance and reliability.

Nezar is one of the founders and Chairman of Gulf Society for Maintenance and Reliability (GSMR) based in the Arabian Gulf Region. He was also the past Chair of the Global Forum on Maintenance and Asset Management (GFMAM).

Nezar was also awarded as CMRP by SMRP (USA) as the Veteran Professional of the year 2015.

VLAD BACALUREPRESENTING: AECOM TOPIC: Artificial intelligence increasing reliability of assets

Vlad Bacalu leads the technology strategy for AECOM’s Commercial Facilities Operations & Maintenance business.

Vlad has extensive hands-on experience in creating and implementing asset management strategies to support operation’s needs and improve corporate bottom line performance through driving reliability improvements. He has over 30 years of maintenance and reliability experience in manufacturing and process industry. Vlad is the Chair of the SMRP and he holds the CMRP, CRL, and CAMA certifications. He is also the Chair of GFMAM. Vlad has a MS in Electrical Engineering.


DARIUS BOOYENSREPRESENTING: PragmaTOPIC: AM sustainability: Links between energy management and asset management

As associate consultant Darius is passionate about the future of energy and renewables in South Africa. Before joining Pragma in August 2018 Darius was a design engineer with core focus in the telecommunications market. Darius designed sheetmetal products and sensible (free air) cooling units intended for a reduction in active cooling (HVAC) unit energy consumption. The energy reduction goal for such units were for a 30% site energy reduction. This goal was achieved and multiple units were sold. Since joining Pragma, Darius has been involved in a critical spares parts project for Kumba Iron Ore as well as the turnkey project for the AM Landscape for Exxaro Belfast Greenfields. Darius believes there are unexplored avenues in asset management pointing towards the future of energy in South Africa.

ARNOLD BOTHA REPRESENTING: PragmaTOPIC: What should a reliability engineer actually know and do?

After cutting his teeth as an industrial engineer in industry, Arnold has been in consulting for the past 28 years. He was a co-founder of Pragma, where he is currently heading up the Training Academy. Before that, he was the R&D Director for 9 years, responsible for the development of the On Key EAMS and Pragma’s internal methodologies, known as The Pragma Way. He also worked for 10 years as a WCM/TPM consultant with CCI, during which he undertook numerous international consulting assignments with blue chip clients and developed TRACC/DigiTRACC, a do-it-yourself WCM/TPM toolkit which is currently being used globally in 15 languages.

He successfully completed SAAMA’s SCPP exam, as well as the IAM’s Asset Management Certificate. He lectured part-time at the University of Pretoria for 6 years, being responsible for the post-graduate Maintenance Management course. He is married, has two sons and lives in Somerset West, near Cape Town.

LIZE BRINK REPRESENTING: EskomTOPIC: SAAMA risk-based inspection technical committee workshop

Lize Brink is a Professional Mechanical Engineer. She started her career in 2006 at Sasol Technology working on various major capital projects. In 2012 she moved to Chevron South Africa, now Astron Energy.

Here Lize joined the Tank Team Refurbishment Group responsible for maintaining the integrity of the large above ground storage tanks on the Refinery. After an internal restructuring she moved into the Long Cycle Planning Lead Role, where she was responsible for the On-stream Turn Around and Inspection of all pressure vessels and tanks, managing integrity treats and small projects. All in the aim to improve reliability of the Refinery.

Most recently Lize have been appointed as the Management Representative and Liaison for the Astron Energy RBI Management System.

DR JASPER COETZEEREPRESENTING: University of PretoriaTOPIC: Improvement of the spare parts management business process using failure modes and effects analysis and Delphi methods

Jasper L. Coetzee, Pr.Eng., Ph.D., M.Eng. (Industrial), B.Sc. (Eng.) (Mechanical), B.Com., G.C.C. (Mines and Works), G.C.C. (Factories), S.A.I.I.E., I.C.M.E.E., S.A.M.A., I.F.R.I.M., M.E.S.A., Akad.SA., is actively involved in the maintenance field in industry for the last 40 years. He is a well-known world leader in the field of Maintenance Engineering, is a member of IFRIM (International Foundation for Research in Maintenance), and has more than 40 research journal and conference papers to his credit. His contribution to maintenance was acknowledged in 2005, when he received the individual President’s Award for Excellence in Maintenance from the Southern African Maintenance Association (SAMA).

He received an intense introduction to the realities of maintenance at the Thabazimbi Iron Ore Mine of Iscor, a mine that experienced a particularly intense period of crisis in the seventies due to poor mine planning. At the same time there was a severe shortage of engineers, leading to him carrying the responsibility of two to three engineers for extended periods over a span of six years. This experience built a particularly strong basis for his passion for excellence in maintenance management, and his awareness of the dangers involved in the neglect of prevention in the maintenance of assets.

During the first three years of the eighties dr. Coetzee filled the Engineering Manager post at Sasol’s Sigma Colliery at Sasolburg, where he was responsible for all maintenance of the then largest underground coal mine in the world. During this period the young management team acquired a reputation for excellent management, originating from several world production records, safety achievements, and culminating in becoming the first coal mine to win the National Productivity Award from the National Productivity Institute.

For the next two and a half years he was appointed as the Manager of the Mechanical Department of Sasol One, responsible for all

mechanical and civil maintenance of this petrochemical plant. This period was characterised by the development of the department to a particularly well-oiled example of excellent maintenance management. In 1985 he was seconded to Sasol’s Group Information Services to head a project to lead the maintenance fraternity in the Sasol Group of Companies towards a new dispensation in the use of maintenance information systems.

Dr Coetzee left Sasol in 1987 to establish a maintenance consulting practice. The main interest of his consulting work lies in the strategic management of maintenance, but he is also well known for his work in reliability and failure analysis. He is managing director of both M-Tech Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd and Maintenance Publishers (Pty) Ltd. Apart from its consulting emphasis, M-Tech is involved in maintenance knowledge development and transfer through the Terotechnica Maintenance College.

He joined the University of Pretoria in 1993 as the incumbent of the Chair in Maintenance Engineering. In this role he was responsible for the establishment and administration of a range of maintenance courses (including two full masters degree programmes). In February 2000 he left the university to devote his total attention to his practice again. He however kept his fingers in the academic world through an involvement on a part-time basis at the Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg) from 2001 to 2011, where he led a masters degree programme in Maintenance Engineering. Since 2011 he is a part-time Professor in the Centre for Asset Integrity Management (C-AIM) at the University of Pretoria.

He is the author of a widely used textbook ‘Maintenance’, which is a prescribed source at various universities, and used fairly widely in industry. He is also the author of ‘RCM ProAktiv: A proactive approach to Reliability Centered Maintenance - a complete view’, published in 2015, and ‘Maintenance Planning - a first course, published in 2017.

Dean Fitt is a member of SAP’s global Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) solutions team. Dean is based at SAP Global Headquarters in Walldorf, Germany. Dean joined SAP in 1998 as a Plant Maintenance (PM) Consultant with SAP Africa, before moving to Germany in 2001. Dean joined SAP from a competitor ERP vendor where he worked as a Maintenance Consultant implementing their maintenance management system. Dean started his career as Mechanical Engineer in the power generation industry.

Craig has a Master Degree in Engineering (Engineering Management) and Mechanical Engineers Certificate of Competence (GCC), and registered as a Professional Engineer and Accredited Facilities Professional. He has over 30 years’ experience in production, infrastructure and built-environment asset management covering the asset lifecycle from applied research, engineering design, construction, operations, maintenance and repurposing; in diverse industry including energy, aviation, municipal infrastructure and property development and management; and has occupied positions in both public and private sector, as client and service provider; and in management and professional roles. Craig is recognised by industry and peers as an expert and leader in the industry through several voluntary roles including Past Vice President of South African Asset Management Association, Past President of South African Facilities Management Association and President-Elect of the Higher Education Facilities Management Association and lectures in the WITS Post Graduate Program in Facilities Management. He served as the first Chairperson of the South African Bureau of Standards Technical Committee for Facilities Management (SABS/TC 267) and was instrumental in the publication of the first Facility Management – Management System Standard in the world, and currently serves on the SABS Technical Committee for Asset Management and Facility Management.

Craig has the only known research to quantify the value of physical assets owned by public and private sector and the annualised operations cost associated with ownership and use. The 2014/2015 research data will be updated with the most current 2017/2018 financial data and will be insightful to any person wanting to have a substantiated basis for SA’s asset value and spend. This research will be complimented by experiences of travelling the perimeter of South Africa on motorbike over 12 days and 7 200 kilometres.

CAMRIN JANSE VAN RENSBURG REPRESENTING: PragmaTOPIC: Identifying critical spare parts for the JIG & DMS plants and recommending stock levels to be kept for Kumba Sishen Mine

Camrin has a particular interest in asset management with a strong focus on work management. She has over 11 years of practical experience as mechanical engineer in both the Power Generation and Mining industries, and thus has the practical experience of the implications of driving initiatives in the environments that she has worked.

DR WYHAN JOOSTEREPRESENTING: Asset Care Research Group, Stellenbosch UniversityTOPIC: Guideline for integrating lean tools and principles in support of ISO 55000

Wyhan is registered as a professional industrial engineer. He is currently the head of the Asset Care Research Group (ACRG) and a senior lecturer at the Department of Industrial Engineering at Stellenbosch University, where he supervises postgraduate research about various asset management related topics. Before following a career in academia he worked for a decade in industry involved in local and international consulting and research and development activities in the fields of asset- and maintenance management services.

KIRSTIN KÜSEL REPRESENTING: Cloud EstateTOPIC: A model based system engineering process for development of digital twins of real estate

Kirstin Küsel is the founder and managing architect of CloudEstate (https://cloudestate.co.za) – SA’s first digital twin of real estate consultancy and broker. She has 20 years’ experience as professional consulting architect and holds a B. Arch (Cum Laude) and MSc (Cum Laude), both from the University of Pretoria. She is presently a PhD student at the Stellenbosch Faculty of Engineering. She is a member of the Cape Town charter of the international Women President Organisation (WPO), the Women Property Network (WPN) and the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE).

She started her career as a research and development architect at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and has authored various articles and peer reviewed international technical papers. In 2001, she started her entrepreneurial journey when she won 15th place in the nationwide Mckinsey/National Institute of Business, business start-up competition. Her architectural consultancy, Homevision was established in 2005 and awarded 3rd place in the growth track in the 2011 Cape Town Entrepreneurship competition. In 2016 she won a Microsoft US disruptive business pitch session with a product idea, called Cloudhome® (a digital twin of a residential property) at the global Women President Organisation (WPO) conference in Baltimore, Washington.

ZENSUKE MATSUDAREPRESENTING: Japan Institute of Plant MaintenanceTOPIC: TPM with digital transformation

Zensuke Matsuda is the Senior Researcher of JIPM (Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance). He has B.E.and M.E. University degrees in electric engineering, in 1971 and 1973, respectively.

He has more than three decades of experience of semiconductor Industry. In 1978 he joined to NEC Corporation (NEC). In 2007, he became the Executive Vice President and Member of the Board of NEC Electronics. His Expertise is Production Engineering and Maintenance, Product Design and Development, Global Business deployment, Administration of Business Units.

She specializes in operational excellence with a strong focus on asset management and reliability strategy, cost effective lean maintenance programs, and continuous improvement. She brings over 25 years of practical experience to drive asset management, operations and maintenance business decisions and improvement opportunities. Susan currently serves as a National President for the Plant Engineering Maintenance Association of Canada (PEMAC) and teaches for the Maintenance Management Professional (MMP) and Asset Management Professional (CAMP) certification programs.

Stephen Minné studied Industrial Engineering and completed a Post Grad in Business at the NMMU Business school in Port Elizabeth. He worked extensively in an asset management consultancy capacity for 3,5 years in Port Elizabeth, before moving to Cape Town as a Project Engineer, servicing international clients. He then took up the role of Systems Engineer for Globeleq at the beginning of 2017 and has been a key driver in the main organisational project, the implementation of ISO 55000 across their 3 renewable power plants. In his spare time, you will find Stephen trail running on Table Mountain, fishing or watching sport.

BENNIE OOSTHUIZENREPRESENTING: PragmaTOPIC: What should a reliability engineer actually know and do?

Bennie started his professional career in 2001 as a Mechanical Engineer from where he got involved in in various roles ranging from Maintenance Engineer, Reliability Engineer, Maintenance Manager and Engineering Manager in the Pulp & Paper, Petrochemical and FMCG industries.

Following 11 years in heavy industry, he started pursuing a career in consulting as a Principal Reliability Engineer for ARMS Reliability before joining Pragma in 2015. As a consultant he has been involved in Maintenance & Reliability optimisation projects for various blue-chip clients across the globe. He has over 7 years’ consulting experience and is currently employed as an Associate Consultant with Pragma.

He successfully completed SAAMA’s SCPP exam, SMRP’s CMRP Exam as well as the Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) for Factories.

He is married, has three children and lives in Johannesburg.

Dr Calie Pistorius is the Director of DeltaHedron Ltd, a UK-based consultancy specialising in technology intelligence and decision support to assess the strategic business impact, opportunities and risks presented by emerging technologies.

He is a Chartered Engineer and an alumnus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard Business School, Ohio State University and the University of Pretoria; an extraordinary professor of Industrial Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch and a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hull in the UK and the University of Pretoria in South Africa, where he was the Director of the Institute for Technological Innovation and Chairman of the National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI). He has published widely on the management of technology and innovation, and delivered keynote addresses across the globe.

His consulting clients include companies in the telecommunications, construction, information technology, steel, energy, mining, chemical, electronics, food and beverage, paper and pulp, health and aerospace sectors.

Coenraad is an Energy Engineering Specialist for Anglo American where he is driving energy performance improvements and operational efficiency. Having ten years’ experience in the coal mining industry, he managed several projects, focussing on energy efficiency, renewable energy, advanced process control and an innovative mine closure concept, TheGreenEngine. He received his Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Stellenbosch in 2016 and is a registered Professional Engineer and a Certified Energy Manager (CEM). Since 2012, he has been involved as a National Energy Management System (EnMS) Expert in the Industrial Energy Efficiency Project, hosted by the CSIR and funded by UNIDO.

MARETHA PRICEREPRESENTING: SasolTOPIC: Practical use of OEE

Maretha Price (néé Scheepers) has been with Sasol since 2005, where she started her career in operations at Sasol Wax. Her responsibilities included ensuring plant integrity, stability and uptime. She combined her duties with engineering design and project management by ensuring that new and current designs were integrally safe and legal. Following her passion for asset management, she transferred to the reliability engineering department in 2008.

She is currently the Reliability Leader for the utilities environment where she manages a team of 4 reliability engineers and guides them to identify improvement and optimisation areas by using various reliability tools and techniques. She has facilitated several large incident investigations and is often requested to conduct incident investigations as an independent investigator in areas outside of her own working environment.

Maretha is registered as a professional engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa and is a Certified Maintenance & Reliability Practitioner (CMRP). She is a frequent speaker at conferences and has presented on reliability engineering at the Society for Maintenance & Reliability Professionals (SMRP) Conference in the USA in October 2018.

JULIA PHALA REPRESENTING: PragmaTOPIC: Maximising value through integration of facilities management and asset management strategies

Julia Phala is an improvement fanatic who started her career in 2008 as a trainee at Westinghouse Electric working on Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) project. She quickly realised that engineering design and nuclear was not her field and made a switch to process engineering, sales and applications in 2011 when she joined Hatch and Flowserve later on, before joining Pragma in 2015. She currently leads solutions and client relationship management teams.

Julia holds a Bachelor of Technology degree (Mechanical) and is currently studying Master’s in Engineering Management with University of Johannesburg, under supervision of Prof JH Pretorius and Dr E Ogbeifun. Through this research, she hopes to unlock maximum value by breaking the silos between physical asset management and facilities management. She is convinced that since both functions cut across all aspects of an organisation and have great influence on bottom line, there should be greater benefit if combined.

Allan Rienstra is the director of business development for SDT International, a Brussels based manufacture of ultrasound solutions comprised of hardware, software, training, and consulting. A 28-year commitment to ultrasound applications has seen Rienstra play a leading role in the deployment of ultrasound-based solutions in 5 continents. He is the co-author of “Hear More, A Guide to Using Ultrasound for Leak Detection and Condition Monitoring.”

A graduate of Simon Fraser University, Rienstra lives in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada with his wife and two sons.

JAN WILLEM RUSTENBURG REPRESENTING: Gordian Logistic ExpertsTOPIC: MRO/Spares optimization in the packaging industry – a case study

Jan Willem Rustenburg (1970) started his career at the Dutch navy. After finalizing the academy in 1994, he became a Main Engineering Officer and served in various operational deployments. During that period he found his passion for spare parts logistics. Not surprisingly, after that period, he became responsible for the logistics integration of all naval maintenance organizations. He combined these activities with a Ph.D. research on spare parts management. The specific challenge of this research was to develop direct relations between logistic costs and maintenance delay times.

In December 2005 Jan Willem started his own company, called Gordian Logistic Experts B.V. Gordian is an international consultancy firm with a focus on spare parts (MRO) management. The clients are typically capital extensive industries such as Defense, Rail, Aerospace, Multi-Utility and High-Tech. In 2015 he set up the operation in South Africa, together with Pragma as key-partner. The marriage between asset management and MRO management appears to be a very happy one.

Jan Willem enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience in different ways. He is an often invited speaker at seminars, is a guest lecturer at the University of Twente, publishes regularly in branch specific magazines and acts as a co-author of various scientific papers.

HERMAN SCHEEPERSREPRESENTING: IS3 (IS CUBED) TOPIC: Using AI and machine learning to protect physical assets

Herman is currently employed by IS3 as the African Asset Performance Management (APM) practice lead. His is responsible for the AVEVA asset performance management suite. The portfolio includes predictive and prescriptive analytics, as well as asset reliability analytics.

He is an experienced engineer and information systems professional with utilities, financial sector, telecommunication and public sector experience. He also recently has had exposure to oil and gas, food and beverage, mining, and general manufacturing This includes engineering, asset management, maintenance, software development, data analytics, consulting, management, business development, and services, software and equipment sales.

He enjoys solving problems using data. Some of his interest include the application of survival analysis, anomaly detection, and operations research techniques in the context of asset and maintenance management.

Herman is registered with ECSA and recently successfully completed the ISO 55000 certified asset management assessor exam and hopes to register professionally in the asset management discipline.

Dr Shanil Narain Singh obtained his Degree in Chemical Engineering in 2002 his Honours Degree in 2004 at the University of Pretoria and his MIng (Engineering Management) in 2011, at the University of Johannesburg and his Doctorate in Risk Based Inspection in 2016 at the University of Johannesburg.

Throughout his career, he has been involved in Process, Risk and Reliability engineering. He has worked for large multinational companies and in his current position as Chief Engineer at Eskom, Group Technology he is the Technical Specialist for Risk Based Inspection and Pressure Equipment Inspection. He is recognised internationally as a Specialist in Risk Based Inspection and regularly attends international forums to discuss topics related to Risk. He formed part of a European Union (EU) advisory board that dealt with issues surrounding ageing infrastructure. He currently sits on the EU advisory committee that deals with Resilience. He has advised on the new European Standard (EN16991) that deals with the creation of a Risk based inspection framework. He is professionally registered with ECSA.

Morné holds a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Stellenbosch. He is responsible for asset and facilities management services delivered to Pragma’s clients in the Western Cape. Being in a fortunate position to be involved with a large number of different companies endeavouring in various aspects and at different maturity levels of asset management, he has witnessed the impact it has on a business and the savings it realises. Morné is passionate about the effective use of technology in the field of asset management to produce tangible improvements. He is a keen sailor and lives in the Western Cape, where he can indulge in his passion for being on the water.

ANNE TERLOUW REPRESENTING: Gordian Logistic Experts TOPIC: MRO/Spares optimization in the packaging industry – a case study

Anne Terlouw (1990) graduated in 2014 for his Masters degree in Industrial Engineering at the Technical University of Eindhoven. During his study he performed his thesis at a third party logistics provider (Van Uden b.v.). He performed a research on the best setup for a big warehouse to reduce picking time. After graduating he started working for Gordian Logistics Experts B.V.

At Gordian, he became a logistics expert in the field of MRO supply chain management. During his career Anne contributed to various projects with topics like supply chain management, spare parts management, warehouse management and project management. Furthermore, he had assisted in product development e.g. features of the SPM studio and parts optimization services. Apart from developing he also applied these products in numerous project relating to spare parts management. In his projects he gained experience in various industries: manufacturing, rail, naval, military and gas transportation.

In December 2018, Anne moved to South Africa and is currently deployed as Business consultant for Gordian in cooperation Pragma as official partner. His activities in South Africa are focusing on project sales and project delivery.

Anne can be characterized as pragmatic, social, and gets energy from implementing solutions and sharing his knowledge and experience he gathered during his career.

Wout Theuws is known for his vast experience within maintenance, manufacturing, Physical Asset Management and HSE.

He has been involved within the automotive industry and over 20 plants for 35 years and has palmed in awards such at Maintencane manager of the year Belgium 2000, Duty of care award 2016 & 2018 and most recently Best presentation at Euromaintenance 4.0 Antwerp.

Wout is involved in numerous organisations improving, & growing and leading Assest Management and is currently the Chairman of the European Asset Management Committee.

He is also a member of jury for the Maintenance manager of the year award in Belgium.


ROB VAN AARLEREPRESENTING: Rand WaterTOPIC: Rand Water, using technology to maintain buried infrastructure

Started working at Rand Water in 1990 as a Fitter and Turner, quickly moved into a supervisory position. In 1994 moved to Operations as a Pump Station Superintendent in the Carltonville area. In 1996 moved back to Maintenance and started the Maintenance Planning section within the Distribution division of Rand Water. Introduced a Maintenance Management system (Maximo) for the Distribution division in 1997, studied Maintenance Management at TUK’s and later Project Management also at TUK’s. Rolled out Maximo to the rest of organization and then became the Senior Systems Support Analysis for Maximo in 1999. In 2017 did a major upgrade and enhancement project with ± 32 integration points between Maximo, SAP and SCADA. Started with Maximo version 3.2 (1997) and now use Maximo version 7.6.

Ark Wingrove is an experienced Asset Management Change Leader, ISO 55001 & 39 Subject Assessor and Trainer. He has worked in sectors including power generation, transmission & distribution, nuclear decommissioning, water & wastewater, aquaculture, gas transmission & distribution and rail across Europe, the Americas, Australia and Asia. Ark was a member of the Institute of Asset Management (IAM) Examinations Committee, establishing and improving the IAM Certificate and Diploma question banks and has personally trained over 2000 individuals.

Ark has just completed a two year assignment as Asset Management Strategy Manager at Ervia, the Irish semi-state owner for Water, Wastewater, Gas and Dark Fibre Assets based in Dublin. He is an active founding member of the newly formed Irish Chapter of the Institute.

JOHAN VAN DER WALTREPRESENTING: Sasol LimitedTOPIC: Utilizing user constructed, direct online, system simulation models to aid in intelligent maintenance and live performance assessment of process critical turbomachinery

Johan van der Walt is a turbomachinery engineer and is currently employed by Sasol Limited. His responsibilities include real time system simulations, machine optimization, reverse engineering and simulation, rotor-dynamic analysis, fault finding and project management. Mr van der Walt is also an active panel member on various Sasol Group Specification review committees relating to rotating equipment. Mr van der Walt obtained his B.Eng (Mechanical) degree from the North-West University and is currently studying toward completing his M.Eng from the same institution. Mr van der Walt obtained the Mechanical Engineer’s Certificate of Competency (GCC: Factories) as governed by the South African Department of Labor. Mr van der Walt’s current research interest relates to the computational fluid dynamic simulation and flow field optimization of turbomachinery.
