The Southern African Asset Management Association (SAAMA) will host its sixth physical asset management conference from 14 to 16 May 2019 at Spier Wine Farm, Stellenbosch. SAAMA2019 will focus on the development of physical asset management in Southern Africa.

An impressive cast of academic researchers, experts, local and international speakers will participate in this unprecedented event which will feature plenary sessions, practical workshops and special roundtables devoted to the most pressing issues relating to enterprise asset management. This year the content will focus on doing things smarter and how this will impact on the workforce, our assets and operations. Smarter approaches that will be unpacked at this year’s event include: digitalisation, IoT, mobile and technology, maturity principles and assessment, best practice in utilities and public sector, green/circular economy, competency and employee engagement and capital projects.

“The SAAMA conference remains the premier annual event where asset management professionals gather for meaningful discussions and unrivalled networking sessions with industry peers. The event is most relevant and offers delegates many reasons to attend. The first being the quality of the content. Papers are content driven, relevant to global matters and pitched at the highest standard. The second reason is that we ensure the conference delivers on the needs of our attendees. These include their desire to interact, share, learn and engage with the content and in addition, earning CPD points for attending the conference,” says Johannes Coetzee, President of SAAMA.

DR JASPER COETZEEREPRESENTING: University of PretoriaTOPIC: Improvement of the spare parts management business process using failure modes and effects analysis and Delphi methods

Jasper L. Coetzee, Pr.Eng., Ph.D., M.Eng. (Industrial), B.Sc. (Eng.) (Mechanical), B.Com., G.C.C. (Mines and Works), G.C.C. (Factories), S.A.I.I.E., I.C.M.E.E., S.A.M.A., I.F.R.I.M., M.E.S.A., Akad.SA., is actively involved in the maintenance field in industry for the last 40 years. He is a well-known world leader in the field of Maintenance Engineering, is a member of IFRIM (International Foundation for Research in Maintenance), and has more than 40 research journal and conference papers to his credit. His contribution to maintenance was acknowledged in 2005, when he received the individual President’s Award for Excellence in Maintenance from the Southern African Maintenance Association (SAMA).

He received an intense introduction to the realities of maintenance at the Thabazimbi Iron Ore Mine of Iscor, a mine that experienced a particularly intense period of crisis in the seventies due to poor mine planning. At the same time there was a severe shortage of engineers, leading to him carrying the responsibility of two to three engineers for extended periods over a span of six years. This experience built a particularly strong basis for his passion for excellence in maintenance management, and his awareness of the dangers involved in the neglect of prevention in the maintenance of assets.

During the first three years of the eighties dr. Coetzee filled the Engineering Manager post at Sasol’s Sigma Colliery at Sasolburg, where he was responsible for all maintenance of the then largest underground coal mine in the world. During this period the young management team acquired a reputation for excellent management, originating from several world production records, safety achievements, and culminating in becoming the first coal mine to win the National Productivity Award from the National Productivity Institute.

For the next two and a half years he was appointed as the Manager of the Mechanical Department of Sasol One, responsible for all

mechanical and civil maintenance of this petrochemical plant. This period was characterised by the development of the department to a particularly well-oiled example of excellent maintenance management. In 1985 he was seconded to Sasol’s Group Information Services to head a project to lead the maintenance fraternity in the Sasol Group of Companies towards a new dispensation in the use of maintenance information systems.

Dr Coetzee left Sasol in 1987 to establish a maintenance consulting practice. The main interest of his consulting work lies in the strategic management of maintenance, but he is also well known for his work in reliability and failure analysis. He is managing director of both M-Tech Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd and Maintenance Publishers (Pty) Ltd. Apart from its consulting emphasis, M-Tech is involved in maintenance knowledge development and transfer through the Terotechnica Maintenance College.

He joined the University of Pretoria in 1993 as the incumbent of the Chair in Maintenance Engineering. In this role he was responsible for the establishment and administration of a range of maintenance courses (including two full masters degree programmes). In February 2000 he left the university to devote his total attention to his practice again. He however kept his fingers in the academic world through an involvement on a part-time basis at the Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg) from 2001 to 2011, where he led a masters degree programme in Maintenance Engineering. Since 2011 he is a part-time Professor in the Centre for Asset Integrity Management (C-AIM) at the University of Pretoria.

He is the author of a widely used textbook ‘Maintenance’, which is a prescribed source at various universities, and used fairly widely in industry. He is also the author of ‘RCM ProAktiv: A proactive approach to Reliability Centered Maintenance - a complete view’, published in 2015, and ‘Maintenance Planning - a first course, published in 2017.

CHARLÉ HALGRYNREPRESENTING: King PriceKEYNOTE SESSION: What does games, morality, technology & insurance have to do with asset management?

‘Disruption’ has become quite a buzzword, with many companies and people claiming they’re shaking up how business is being done. But for King Price partner of business Charlé Halgryn, ‘disrupting’ is all in a day’s work – and has been every day for the past 30 years.

Charlé’s insurance industry career began in 1986 when she started as an apprentice at one of South Africa’s biggest independent brokers. It’s from these humble beginnings that she learned to dream big and imagine a very different future.

From day 1, Charlé has had a passion for innovation, and experience has taught her that if innovation is a company’s beating heart, then purpose is its soul. This link between passion and purpose means she’s totally at home in her newest role, at King Price, where the constant pursuit of innovation powers the insurer’s vision… Lower premiums: Higher purpose.

Charlé calls on Steve Jobs to verbalise what makes her soul smile: ‘If you’re working on something exciting that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. The vision pulls you.’

These insights have served her well in her professional journey that spans taking insurance start-ups from zero to hero, to implementing strategic projects for multinationals, to bringing King Price’s latest ground-breaking innovation to market. As head of King Price’s community insurance division, Charlé and her team are establishing a futuristic platform-driven ecosystem that’ll link the insurance industry with the property and asset management fraternities: ‘We aim to build one of the world’s biggest platform-centric ecosystems for the buildings and construction industry.’

And if that sounds like a lot of terminology to absorb, think of it this way: You know how Amazon transformed the way we shop? That’s the massive impact that Charlé and King Price want to have on every single person in the building value chain – from architects, engineers, quantity surveyors and builders; to financers, property and asset managers, bodies corporate and insurance brokers; to owners and tenants; to plumbers, painters, security services, contractors and the like.

In the past, Charlé relied on strategic thinking as she introduced and integrated tailored insurance products and services that added value to world-renowned motor and finance brands. Her latest challenge is no different. It’s not for nothing that she’s considered visionary… But seeing the future is 1 thing. Bringing it to life is another thing entirely. Watch this space!

Julia Phala is an improvement fanatic who started her career in 2008 as a trainee at Westinghouse Electric working on Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) project. She quickly realised that engineering design and nuclear was not her field and made a switch to process engineering, sales and applications in 2011 when she joined Hatch and Flowserve later on, before joining Pragma in 2015. She currently leads solutions and client relationship management teams.

Julia holds a Bachelor of Technology degree (Mechanical) and is currently studying Master’s in Engineering Management with University of Johannesburg, under supervision of Prof JH Pretorius and Dr E Ogbeifun.
