" Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is

just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable,if there is any excellence and if thereis anything worthy of praise, think

about these things." - Philippians 4:8

Last Sunday night at The Bridge we were graced by amessage from Jimmy Wilferth, who is the President of Heartfor Africa. As you may know, our church has sent tenmissionaries to Swaziland with Heart for Africa over the lastfew years. Jimmy shared pictures and stories about the greatwork that is being done there and how Heart for Africa ischanging lives both in Swaziland and in our own country.

In addition to inspiring us with his testimony about Africa,Jimmy also talked about gratitude. He mentioned a recent

study which showed November is the most likely month forpeople to be diagnosed with depression due to the cold settingin and the sky getting dark so much earlier. How ironic that ina month devoted to giving thanks people are more likely to bedepressed! However, the same study found that peoplewho made a practice of gratitude by writing down five thingsthey are thankful each day were found to be 25% happier onaverage than people who did not. In other words, scientistshave found a link between being grateful and being content.

Coincidentally, in the same "Gratitude Attitude" worshipseries where Jimmy mentioned writing down things you are

thankful for, we have also been handing out "GratitudeJournals" at The Bridge each week. As a community we are

writing down things we are thankful for each day, and wewould love for you to join us in this endeavor. Swing by TheBridge on Sunday night and pick up a Gratitude Journal, or

join the conversation on our Facebook page.

In the mean time, take just a moment to write down 5

    things you are thankful for:

    1. ____________________________________________

    2. ____________________________________________

    3. ____________________________________________

    4. ____________________________________________

    5. ____________________________________________

Now, look at the list above. Offer these five things as both your prayer and your offering to God today. May weall make this a daily practice between now and Thanksgiving(and beyond!) as we become people with an attitude ofgratitude.

    Gratefully,

Count Your Blessings (Literally) by Rev. Trey Flowers, Minister of Youth & "The Bridge"

The fall and the weeks leading up toThanksgiving is my favorite time of year. Ilove watching the leaves change from a

bright green to red and orange, and when they fall they revealthe intricate tangle of tree limbs and branches that have beenhidden all spring and summer. I love the crisp autumn air andthe morning frost. But what I love the most is how thankful

people seem. People talk about being thankful for their familyand their friends. They talk about being thankful for warmhouses, food and things we so often take for granted.

One thing I am especially thankful for this year, isWoodmont. I am thankful for the friends it has given me. I

am thankful for the things I have learned here and how thischurch continues to nurture me spiritually. I am thankful thatthis church has become my family and my home. It is a placeI feel comfortable and a place I feel safe. I am thankful foreach one of you, and each unique quality and viewpoint you

bring to this congregation. Thank you for making this churchwhat is today and what it will be tomorrow.

Let us continue this feeling of thankfulness throughout theyear and not just the few weeks leading up to the holidayrush.

    ~Mary Clare

There's a song in our hymnal that wemight be singing in a few weeks in Advent. It's entitled, "I Wonder As I Wander." I like

that phrase because it describes something I love to do asoften as I can. And Autumn is the most wonderful time ofyear to "wonder as you wander" under the golden canopy of

    God's changing Maple leaves.

We all wonder, but what do we wonder about?

I wonder why God made giraffes with such long necks?

Being a cat lover, I've always wondered why cats like to play with and torture their prey?

As one who loves the nature channel on TV, I alwayswonder what a wildebeest thinks about in the jaws of acrocodile?

The longer I live in Nashville, the more I wonder aboutthings that puzzle me:

If the city believes in recycling, why do they collectgarbage every week but recycling material only once amonth?

Why does a city bus stop and sit every day during rushhour for at least ten to fifteen minutes in front of the BelleMeade Kroger thus backing up the rush house traffic andmaking the motorist less than happy?

Why do the police allow all these lawn and landscapingtrucks and trailers to block neighborhood streets, especially on blind hills and dangerous intersections?

There are certainly some deeper, far more important thingsto "wonder" about as far as our Christian faith is concerned. Many call them the "paradoxes of our faith" which we ashumans will never be able to understand:

How can Jesus be fully God and fully human divine and

human at one and the same time?

How can God be both one person and three persons at thesame time?

How can God be both near and far?

How can the first be last and the last first? (Matt. 20:16;Mark 9:35)

How can you lose your life by saving it and save your life by losing it? (Matt. 10:39)

How can the measure you give be the measure youreceive? (Matt. 7:2; Mark 4:24)

How can those who exalt themselves be humbled andthose who humble themselves be exalted? (Matt. 23:12;Luke 14:11)

Yes, I love to "wonder as I wander" or ponder so much oflife. What would it be like if we never wondered aboutanything? I guess we wouldn't need our minds. But somethings we will just have to wonder about until we can ask Godabout it face to face. And that's what faith is all about.

So, what do you wonder about?

Here's what you do: Purchase the frozen (unbaked) loaves of bread (5 to a pack at Kroger). Thaw (no need to let it rise) the breadand cut into 4 pieces, lengthwise. Roll each piece into a long snake and cut about 1-inch pieces from the snake.Place them on a tray and bake at 350 until light brown. Each loaf makes 80-100 pieces. Most bakers choose tobake 5 loaves. The baked bread pieces can be placed in Ziploc or grocery bags and then frozen. If you don'thave room in your freezer, please place the pieces in the large silver freezer in the downstairs WCC kitchen.
