Dear Parents and Caregivers, Our staff and the Positive Behaviour Team are developing five rules for all staff to use to ensure we have an orderly environment. This is just one strategy to improve school operations. When adopted, all classes will start with an orderly welcome, hats off/bags off, ear phones away, good manners and be prepared for learning. To help us it would be great if all parents could make sure their child has a pen and paper as we have a few students who are not prepared for class, which is not ideal. Our Student Services team are developing a number of reward systems aimed at encouraging good attendance, better behaviour and a general focus on well-being for both students and staff. We will be adopting a House Points database system which is used at Greenwood College, Perth Modern and Applecross. Earning house points will lead to students attending a range of rewards including sausage sizzles, movies etc. We really want to focus on the good things students do. We must do more to improve the poor behaviour of a minority of students. We are putting a number of strategies in place and think they will have positive outcomes. The data below indicates N2 and N3 accounted for more than half of our suspensions.

Suspensions Semester One

The staff have agreed to the new structure in the school for 2019. We have advertised one of the Student Support Officer positions and it will close near the end of the school holidays. At last we have filled the maths position Mr Seatter left at the end of term two. Mr Joseph Lister will be joining us in term four. The Year 6/7 transition program is underway with our feeder primary schools and the program is aimed at making the transition to Senior High School a positive experience. Greenwood College is working with us as a Sister School relationship. To date three staff members have visited them. Their History teacher will be delivering Modern History via video conference and visits to us. ATAR students will visit Greenwood next year. Katanning’s Got Talent was held on Saturday night 15 September. A number of staff and students were very involved behind stage and on it. A lot of effort has gone in to the night by Ms Moffat and other staff. Also a huge thank you to the Katanning SHS P&C and the members of the community who support the night.

A new Public School Review process has been launched and is now operational. Information can be entered on a continuing basis as the system is all online and I have already started to use it. The Electronic School Assessment Tool (ESAT) appears fairly easy to use. It will be a three-year cycle for collecting and presenting data for School Improvement and Accountability.

School Survey 2018 This is a bi-annual survey and the results are now available. From 2016 to 2018 parent dissatisfaction has significantly reduced in all areas of the School Survey

except behaviour management, which is still regarded as of concern by parents. More parents are in the

neutral bracket (neither agree or disagree) than in 2016, which suggests we might move them towards

being happier about the school before the next School Survey, but there are more parents agreeing with

the statements in most areas, which also suggests we are on the right track.

Most questions on the survey were answered by parents, students and staff, but a few were specific to one group. For example: number 12 in the right had chart – “This school takes staff opinions seriously”, was clearly not on the parent or student survey as “My child feels safe at this school “, was not a staff question.

Dissatisfaction levels are low for most questions compared to 2016 except behaviour management. This is an area the school is working on and know we must improve. Overall the percentage of students, parents and staff who responded positively to the questions is generally quite high. It is interesting to note the different perceptions the three groups have of the same question. As we come rapidly towards the end of term three I have encouraged all Year 12’s to work hard so they pass their courses and achieve WACE. Valediction preparation is well underway. Prize donors have been contacted, the venue has been booked (Town Hall), photographer and caterer are organised, invitations have been sent and Mrs Garrity and Mr Gaudin are working on Certificates and prizes for the night. The school is very honoured to receive the WA State Final—Outstanding Support for the Apex Australia Teenage Fashion & Arts Youth Festival Award. Congratulations to Mrs Sushila Malik and Ms Melanie LeGuin for all the hard work and support they provide to our students for these awards. Reminder - Term 4 - Staff and students return to school on Monday 8 October. Have a safe and happy holiday and we will see you next term. Carolyn Cook Principal

The three graphs, above and opposite show the relationship between how parents, students and staff responded to the questions in the 2018 School Survey. Some questions were the same for all three groups and some were group specific.

Katanning’s Got Talent was presented to the Katanning community on Saturday night. The audience of a 178 people were entertained by

singers, dancers, comedians, gymnasts and variety acts.

Travis Menghini was the MC for the evening and he created an atmosphere of family fun from the beginning to the end of the night. Travis and Sarah Watson

involved the audience during the evening, lucky door prizes and some amazing humour that made us all laugh the evening away. The P&C, led by Carmen Anderson cooked up a storm to create a brilliant medley of food for the hungry audience, that included beef and gravy roles, quiche and salad, soup, and multiple sweets and drinks. All the food was donated by generous members of the community leading to the P&C raising over $1300 in food and drink sales and another $900 was donated by Katanning SHS from entry ticket and raffle ticket sales.

The community support for this event was beyond belief, through the donations by local businesses for prizes for the performers to door prizes and the food and drinks. Thank you to the Shire of Katanning who donated the use of the town Hall, Travis Menghini our MC who donated his time and Stephen Barrett and Regan Pontillo who did all the sound on the night.

Our amazing acts who took to the stage with gusto and entertained us all are what truly made this night so amazing. Performers such as Mia Hamon, Dylan Sutherland and Joseph Rose were our runners up and Grand prize winners for the Junior section. The Senior runner up was Andy Bradshaw and The Grand prize winner was Lucy Fernandez from Albany. The junior section had some very proud category winners, Jovinia Kubwimana for her beautiful singing and Isabel Collis for her freestyle

Poomsae. Then from the senior section the beautiful Karen dancers took out the award for group act.

Year 12 Food Science and Technology: The past three weeks has seen Year 12 students learn about different preservation methods, and why foods are preserved. Students have had the opportunity to produce Sweet Mustard Pickle and Lemon Curd as well as Pickled Vegetables. The students were initially not very interested in the Sweet Mustard Pickle process; however, a lot of the students have enjoyed eating it and liked the taste of it. The vegetables used to produce the Sweet Mustard Pickle were used from the Home Economics garden which Syd and Tyron (gardeners) tend to and enable the garden to grow amazing produce for us to use amongst the Home Economics classes. A massive thank you to the gardeners! The Lemon Curd has been a hit, the students enjoy eating it on toast, in cakes and other baked goods. Well done to all year 12 Food Science students who produce these delicious creations.

Year 7 Home Economics: The Year 7 students have been learning about how to make a loom, and the difference between the warp and weft threads in a loom. The weft threads go across, and the warp threads go up and down the loom. Students created their own loom for their hot drink coaster for themselves or their parents to use, they used a variety of colours to create unique patterns. The students are currently producing their own emoji face out of felt and other materials. Stay tuned for final results. Well done to the year seven students on their wonderful creations.

Year 8 Home Economics: As part of the Home Economics course, students are required to learn about healthy eating, the importance nutrients play in your body and why having a balanced diet is important for your body. As part of their assessment, students were asked to create their own unique and healthy wrap. Students were responsible for getting their food order in on time, preparing their ingredients, cooking and putting together their ingredients to produce their version of a ‘Healthy Wrap’. Students used a range of vegetables and meats to create some delicious and appealing meals. Well done Year 8 students.

Year 10 food Technology: The Year 10 Food Technology students have been using every day food commodities to produce their chosen product. These past two weeks’ have seen students brainstorm, researching, costing and producing recipes involving the ingredient cheese. This is an everyday food which many people enjoy and use in numerous amounts of recipes. Students should be proud of their final products, which included cheese and parmesan biscuits, pasta bake and stuffed potatoes amongst other delicious and appealing food products. Well done to all Year 10 food technology students.

Apex Australia Teenage Fashion and Arts Youth Festival (AATFA): Apex Australia Teenage Fashion and Arts Youth Festival (AATFA) provides an opportunity for all teenage students undertaking secondary studies in Western Australia to design, manufacture, and model their own fashion garments. There were four categories, which saw six Home Economics students from Katanning Senior High School participate in this regional heat of the competition. A select number of students, including Asiylah Imran, Ty Duong, Tackly Aung entered the casual wear category, with Chloe Why, Charlotte Why, and Bethany Wells entering the Formal Wear category. We had two winners from Home Economics within the categories which included Tackly Aung as the winner of the Casual Wear, and Chloe Why as the winner of the Formal Wear. These two

students now have a state heat in Mandurah to compete against other state finalists, and if they are successful, they will have the opportunity to attend and compete in the national finals later this year in Melbourne. Well done to all entrants, on their fantastic designs. A big thank you to the Home Economics students who produced the wonderful food for the evening.

Year 9 Cooking: Year 9 Cooking class are proud of themselves in using local produce. The broccoli & chives, and kale are from Home Economics vegetable garden. Thank you to Syd and Tyron for maintaining the garden, and for harvesting the produce.

Year 9 Home Economics: In year 9 Home Economics, students successfully completed the sewing machine revision test and made a cute little chicken pin cushion. Now they are extremely busy making their aprons. Stay tuned for the final results.

Year 11 Food Science and Technology: The Year 11 Food Science & Technology students excitedly finished the Big Bake Off Task. Students are tasked with focusing on a staple food product like wheat flour, and use different methods of cooking to produce their product for judging against the sensory properties. This includes being judged on taste, texture, appearance and aroma. Students have had a great competition in making Scones, Pancakes, Cupcakes and Mini muffins. We have invited different judges to judge the products every week.

Year 11 Children Family & Community are quite busy making a large patch work quilt for Royal Flying Doctors’ Services. This will be used in their fundraiser, where raffle tickets are sold and it will become one of the winning prizes. Stay tuned for the final result in a few weeks’ time. Year 12 Children Family & Community are also extremely busy showing their professional skills in sewing making the Days for Girls project. Well done to all who have contributed to this project. The Year 7 students sat a School Readiness Test on Friday 31 August to help the school evaluate whether our bandwidth is going to be suitable for the introduction of NAPLAN Online in 2019. All students did extremely well with the new format – which asks them to drag and drop objects on screen, use screen calculators and rulers and other computer related skills. The Year 7 and Year 9 students will complete the NAPLAN test online from the 14 – 24 May 2019. Student results for the 2018 tests will be mailed home once received by the school.

Both Year 7 and Year 8 students have spent the last 3 weeks building their coding skills. The Year 8 students used “Hour of code” to ‘play’ their way through a series of activities, using code to safely navigate their character. Using computational thinking steps they then applied code features to CodeBugs to complete different tasks. Different students programmed the CodeBug to do a variety of things including wearable name badges, fortune teller devices and as a tool for testing conductivity. Through this process students had to identify the problem that their new device was solving, identify the features and purpose of their code and then evaluate the solution and project success. The Year 7 students have been using Edison robots to introduce them to coding. The had to complete 5 tasks to get to know all of the features of Edison and then they put their coding skills to the ultimate test in a Jousting Competition. In groups students had to design how they were going to mount their knight (a balloon) and lance (a kebab stick) onto their horse (the robot). Then they had to select a code they had used or design a new code to control their robot during the tournament. This was a great application of the coding they had been learning and saw a variety of code styles being used from continually turning right, to staying inside the lines, to robots being controlled by old TV remotes. Year 12 students are concluding their placements in Week 8 of Term 3, and have done a brilliant job of representing our school within the community. A big thank you to all the employers that have hosted our Year 12’s and Year 11’s throughout the year, without the generosity of the community we would not have such a successful program! The Katanning Regional Business Awards are being held in conjunction with Rotary this year, and the two school categories of Workplace Learning Student of the Year and School Based Trainee of the Year will be again awarded to top achievers. Nominations have closed, and finalists have been selected, with a total of 11 students nominated. Employers nominated their students for the award categories, thank you for the effort that went into the nomination forms. The award ceremony will be held on Saturday 29 September at the Katanning Country Club, finalists have been notified by mail. This year we have been fortunate enough to have two new prize donations for our awards. ATC WorkSmart Albany have donated the prize money for ATC School Based Traineeship of the Year, and Maxima have donated the prize money for the Maxima Workplace Learning Student of the Year. A big thank you to both organisations for not only supporting our students throughout the year with School Based Traineeship opportunities, but also jumping on board to ensure our students are recognised for their hard work! A massive congratulations to all the nominees for the 2018 Awards, an outstanding group of young people have achieved amazing things with their Workplace Learning employers. ENGLISH/HASS

8.4 HASS/English On Monday 10 September the 8.4 HASS/English class presented work they have recently completed to a group of students, teachers and parents. The work they presented included dioramas they made on a chosen landform or landscape and letters they have written to the Minister for Agriculture, Alannah MacTiernan, about the impact of banning live export. Students also discussed the recent farm excursion and gave out a flyer created to summarise the day.

Guests were invited to stay to view other pieces of student work and for a morning tea cooked by the students, which included toasted sandwiches, biscuits and tea or Milo. The 8.4 dioramas will be on display in the front office for the next 2 weeks, so if you’d like to have a look, pop in and check them out. A special mention should go to Courtaney Woods who presented the Welcome to Country for the first time. These students should all be very proud of themselves and the work they have completed. Well done!

10 ACE HASS Year 10 students have been studying WW2 this term. The 10 ACE class completed a timeline of key events from the war. Everything was carefully measured and it turned out amazing. Well done. Mrs Carmen Anderson HASS/English Teacher

Earlier this year we were successful in receiving a grant from LotteryWest of $13000 to purchase 25 Fuji Trailbikes and accessories. We have had fun the last few weeks riding the bikes around near the school and getting to know the features. At the end of Week 8 we went on a camp to Shannon National Park where we visited the Mt Frankland Wilderness Lookout and fire tower, rode 15km along the Munda Biddi bike trial, saw the Fernhook Falls, went geocaching, had a campfire, rode another 4.5km around the Shannon Campground and visited Lake Muir. The riding was through very scenic bush and grassland, with quite a few uphills (but then the fun downs as well), and a bit of rain but that didn’t dampen our spirits. There were a few sore legs and glutes but we had lots of fun and thank LotteryWest very much for the bikes and look forward to many more riding adventures. Sarah Watson Unit Leader

Year 12 Automotive and Engineering Students have been working on their own technology projects for personal use. Jordan Crouch made an adjustable warning sign for their families working vehicle and Jesse McGill customised a frame to use on his “Pajero”, well done. All other students actively engineered a product to use in their chosen vocation.

Year 8 Materials Students were busy making a “fathers day plaque” activity using metal and wood. Their focus of the activity was “aesthetics”. Each student used the design process to plan and produce a personalised plaque, which they all enjoyed making.

Pedal Prix Team – after school club A team of students have committed themselves to participate in pedal prix and this is finally up and running on Thursdays. The Pedalprix challenge is an annual event that attracts other Schools state-wide to enter in a pedalprix bike race in Busselton. The club involves the development of building a human powered trike and team building skills. Participating in the club requires that your child commits to attending weekly until the weekend of the race and is committed to participate as a race rider in the Busselton Pedalprix in August 2019. This would entail that parents would plan, organise and arrange transport, meals and overnight accommodation if required. All of these are the responsibility of the child’s parents/caregivers.

The theme of Spirit Day this year was Cartoons and on Thursday, the school was bursting with characters, from Alice in Wonderland to Doctor Who! The staff were dressed up too and I was more than surprised to find the cast of Sponge Bob sitting in the staff room for morning meeting. The event started with the students heading into Advocacy classes to set up their stalls. Each Advocacy class, from Years 7 to 12, devised their own fund raising idea and the stalls were very creative. There was plenty of fantastic food to eat; Massaman curry and milkshakes with caramel popcorn being just some of the delights. There was a variety of creative stalls, with ideas ranging from cupcake challenges and voo-roo dolls to can-throw and donut eating competitions (Boyd Woods being the champion at 14 seconds!). There were also competitions to win, such as guess the jar of lollipops and freckle for a farmer with bubble blowing for the more relaxed spirited student. Once the set up was complete, an impromptu assembly in the gym was held to judge the costumes. The Student Leaders and Edna Mode from ‘The Incredibles’ (aka me!) had a tough job, particularly in the lower school where there were many costumes from which to choose a winner. With much deliberation, the decisions were made and the winners were: 1

2nd Prize: Adam Jolly- Doctor Who 3rd Prize: Sam Sloan- Melman the giraffe 4th Prize: Slade Green- Evil clown 5th Prize: Sarah Buckley- Marty the zebra 6th Prize: Zara Thompson- Unicorn After the assembly, Spirit day was launched and the students proceeded to bounce, launch, hurl, slide and race their way through the various inflatables available for the students. The bronco bull was a challenge for the most determined student, although Cameron McPherson proved to be a champion (future career in Rodeo perhaps?). The obstacle course and the slam dunk were great fun and the dunking tank saw some sharp shooters in action. The sumo suits were a massive hit and provided bundles of stomach slapping hilarity. There were plenty of smiling, happy faces and there seems to be a general agreement from staff and students alike that the day was a resounding success. Thanks to everyone who helped to make the day such a fantastic event. KATY STEED Spirit Day organiser

ACADEMIC TASK FORCE

The Year 8’s have been learning about the physics concept of energy efficiency and applying it to car and house design and features. This has been developed through group activities that have involved researching factors affecting efficiency, determining inquiry questions and experiments to test them, conducting experiments and then applying these principles to designs using ‘Sketch Up’ or by building models.

Some of the Year 9’s have moved on from electrical conduction to exploring heat conduction and sound

and light waves. Heat conduction experiments saw students taking measurements and graphing their

results. To further explore the concept of sound, students researched and built musical instruments.

Year 10 LEAD Camp Sponsorship and Fundraising At the start of Term 4 the year 10 LEAD students are headed to Perth to experience a variety of sporting venues and training facilities. We will be getting a Tour of ECU Joondalup, Optus Stadium, the Western Australian Institute of Sport, the West Coast Fever’s facilities at the state netball centre and Jacobs Ladder. The trip had the potential to be very expensive but thanks to sponsorship from the Katanning Shell Truck Stop and fundraising, the 3-day excursion has been kept below $100. A huge thankyou to the Shell Truck Stop for sponsoring the fuel for the trip. All the fuel that is used during the camp has been sponsored by the Shell Truck Stop. Katanning Senior High School and our students greatly appreciate the generosity as it has helped to reduce the cost of the camp significantly.

Another contributing factor that has kept the cost of the camp down is that the students have had the opportunity to do multiple sausage sizzle fundraisers outside the BKW Co-Op. Students have manned the barbeque, interacted with the public and managed money in order to raise an impressive total of just under $520. A big thankyou to the BKW Co-Op for allowing us to use their barbeque and venue. Well done to the students for their hard work and time during the fundraisers. Mr Gardiner LEAD Coordinator
