TRANSCRIPT

  • Vision StatementWe are a vibrant, loving community and an inspirational resource for spiritual awakening and personal growth.

Mission StatementThe purpose of this Church shall be to serve as a Spiritual Development Center by making available the knowledge and practiceof Science of Mind to all people, and especially to its members, and to foster their spiritual, cultural and general well-being and to

provide facilities for education, fellowship and public worship.

When I was in the School of Ministryone of the Ministers who was facilitatinga weekend retreat for us shared about thepower of the images we hold in mindabout our ministry. While there is avision that overarches the entirety of ourlives, there are also images of the day today living of it. These images maysupport or sabotage our vision. I believethis is also true for everyone's life. So,using my life and ministry as an illustra-tion, please consider the principles atwork and images you hold for your ownlife, remembering you can trade them infor higher, newer and more sparklingmodels at any time.

My vision is to live a passionate, dedi-cated and committed life that shinesthrough my ministry. Here are possibleimages for my daily life:

Minister (person) as juggler: Rushingfrom one plate spinning on top of a longflexible pole to another attempting tokeep them all in play without breaking adish. Personally this is way too hard anddemanding for me.

Minister (person) as train wreck: Highdrama and reacting to it all by being over-whelmed, taking things personally and

playing victim. Personally this does notmatch the way I want to experience theenergy of life.

Minister (person) as puppet: Pulled byeveryone else's need and drama, nopersonal life or control over my hours ordays. Personally, this doesn't match myview of good physical, mental, emotionalor spiritual health.

Minister (person) as star: Having to bethe center of attention in every activity.Personally, way to much pressure toalways be on! Always be lovable andalways be put together physically, thereare just days when I am not going to puton makeup!

Minister (person) as spiritual partner:This is one of the images I love. It lookslike being in partnership with the peoplearound me that I do life with. It speaksof respect for each other, of everyonedoing what is needed to allow the highestand best to happen through our work. Itmeans we are centered in prayer andactive in life. It also means we each havegood boundaries and as equals we speakhonestly about what we can say yes toand acknowledge that life is about choice,

  • FROM THE BOARDWilvesta Morgan Jr., President

I have often stated in my articles thatwhen I prepare to write this article, I sitin silence and allow my mind to justdrift with many thoughts. During thistime, I never have any particularthought that I am dwelling on. In mydeepest thought process emerges the

topic of my article. How startled I am to be led to what Iwant to say.

Recently I wrote that Rev. Kris, Rev. Carol or one of thePractitioners will say something that just sticks with me.Most of the time, they are unaware of how powerful thestatements are that they have said. I listen very carefully andmake a mental note of what they have said.

To illustrate my point, as I prepared to start drafting thisarticle, for some unknown reason I picked up an old copyof the Daily Word. I flipped it open and low and behold, there were some of the quotes that I heard from our lecternin Sunday Service. Havent you heard this? "In the sanctuaryof Gods love, I open my heart to infinite peace." "God ismy source of wisdom." "I am divinely guided in all thingsthat I do." And last, "In prosperity and trusting in God, Ilive in peace and plenty."

Now doesnt this sound just like we hear from ourmagnificent group of speakers? I dont usually speak on thesesubjects but I do practice all of them.

My heart just overflows with joy when I read these words. It is an honor for me to express my gratitude to our Boardof Trustees. The Board is made up of all women, with mebeing the only man. This is only because the ladies werethe only ones to come forward and run for the Board inOctober. We certainly encourage the men to step forwardand run for a position. We need your voices and your talents. In the meantime it is my pleasure to thank this fabulousgroup of women consisting of Rev. Kris, Kellie Mulhern-Davis, Teresa Day, Victoria Del Aguila, Peggy Huber and KimWeathers. This is a fabulously super-talented group ofwomen. They are so full of excellent ideas and they are somuch fun to work with. Men, you are missing all of the deli-cious treats that they bring into the meeting as we take careof church business. Our community is so blessed to have allof our women serving our family in such a magnificent way.

On behalf of our Board, Rev. Kris, Rev. Carol and all ofour Practitioners, we applaud all of our extraordinary familyfor participating in all of the many activities that are givenhere at our facility. It would be impossible to be as successfulas we are as a church, without your support. We salute all ofyou and thank you again and again.

Our vision statement continues to demonstrate what weare all about. The statement reminds us that we are a vibrant, loving community and an inspirational resource for spiri-tual awakening and personal growth.

Our facilities are used for many purposes. For exampleour church is used by the county to be a polling place forthree precincts to vote during elections. Jim Montgomeryopens our doors and sets up everything throughout the day.

In addition to all of the classes that we are constantlygiving, outside organizations request to use our facilities. Weserve our community very well. We realize that as events aregiven, our church is seen by new people. They come to anevent, they become impressed by our church and what theysee. Realizing how friendly we are, so often they will return.

On behalf of the Board, Rev. Kris and Rev. Carol, we areso grateful to our fantastic congregation for supporting our

Youth and Family Ministry in their car wash on May 18. Itwas a complete success and they raised over $1,000 to beused to send our teens to camp. What an inspiring way thatis to have our youth earn their expenses, rather than for itto have been given to them. It was hard work and they gotwet but we are all so proud of them. Words cannot expressour heartfelt gratitude to Scott McDermitt and Jill Robertsfor the magnificent work that you are teaching our youthto plan together, play together and most of all to worktogether. The values you are teaching them now will moldtheir lives forever. Thank you to all of the teens, children, parents and adults who helped make this a success (MonicaWatson, Steve Bosserman, and Jim Montgomery). Ourcommunity adores all of you and will always be there toassist you in any way that we can. May God continue to blessand direct your lives to be whatever you want them to be.Your church applauds all of you.

It is with joy in my heart that I shine my spotlight onour Sound Department in this article. This is the reason. Each Sunday morning as I arrive, usually at 10:15, I alwayssee Steve Bosserman or Linda Cullerton already here andsetting up the sound system. Often Mike Gallagher andTeresa Day will also join them. They check everything so themusicians can practice and then the Practitioner of the Daywill begin the meditation. It is a thing of beauty to observehow every movement that they make is necessary to providethe clearest sounds that they can get. So often as we enterthe sanctuary, we take for granted that everything is readyfor us, however, for everything that happens here, there isa person behind the scenes making it so. Our excellent soundcrew sits in the balcony, operating the sound system. Itrequires deep concentration and team work with the speakersand musicians, to do the work that is required.

The Board has a Trustee in contact with the Steve, so wereceive feedback about any equipment repair or replacement,or volunteer opening they may have. We support them inrunning an effective and essential department of our church. There is a need for more volunteers to learn to operate thesound. They will train you and work with you until you areready to operate it alone. If you are interested, you cancontact Steve Bosserman or call Terri Thayer in the churchoffice 626-332-6838.

With our deepest appreciation, it is with great honor thatwe stand in awe to thank all of you in the Sound Departmentfor the extraordinary service that you give to us every Sundayand Wednesday night as well as many other events like ourMGM Musical Concert, Memorial Services and WeddingCeremonies, where you lend your talents.

In closing, from the Board, Rev. Kris, Rev. Carol and ourentire church community, we are so proud and honored tocongratulate our super special Practitioner Graduates; MarthaBass, Leri Smith, and Terri Thayer. On June 1, their gradu-ating exercise was held at our church. The service was terrificand each graduate was well prepared to make their speeches.Rev. Kris and Rev. Carol gave excellent remarks. Tina Meekswas a show stopper with her voice and David Cohen wasgreat on the piano. We are so grateful for all Practitionerswho participated. The Candlelight Ceremony at the closeof the service was inspiring! A reception followed the grad-uation and the day ended with joy and happiness foreveryone. It is with great joy that I let you know that theyhave successfully completed their written examinations andwill be proceeding to their Licensing Panels on July 12.

With a joyous heart, Wilvesta Morgan, Jr.

  • BLISSFUL LIVINGRev. Dr. Carol Bliss

Navigating ChangeSometimes life is filled with change. We may feel like were on a rockingship, far from the familiar, frightenedand alone. Now is the time to pray,

to allow our beloved spiritual community to surround uswith love and support. Jesus said, "Fear not, little flock, forit is your Fathers good pleasure to give you the kingdom."When we find ourselves in unknown territory, when we feellonely, when we dont know where to turn or cant seem tofind answers, we place our lives in the hands of God. Changecan be an opportunity to allow others to love and supportus. We live in a supportive universe and we can rely on somuch more than just ourselves. The beautiful hymn, "HisEye is on the Sparrow" reminds us that the loving Presenceof an all-powerful, all-loving God watches over us, and is

always leading us in the direction of higher good."Why should I feel discouragedWhy should my heart be lonelyHis tender word I hear, and resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears."

Often, a simple mantra can calm our minds, remindingus of the real truth of our being. I love Louise Hays beau-tiful affirmation, "I am safe. All is well." God always showsus the way.

We are never alone. As Ernest Holmes taught, we cannever be hurt, harmed or endangered. We are Gods belovedand are always cradled safely in the arms of a God who knowsonly good.

    With Gratitude AboundingRev. Dr. Carol

therefore, sometimes we will say no.Minister (person) in a raft floating smoothly on a beau-

tiful river: Years ago I did a midnight raft float on RushCreek at June Lake. We got into the rafts at midnight at agentle bend in the river that was by the road. It was a fullmoon and we lay on our backs looking up. The river wassmooth and easy moving our raft along turning it so thatwe would see a different view in each moment. The moonwas full and the stars were bright. The cliffs of the moun-tains were amazing, shining with the reflected light of themoon. The trees and rushes of the creek were gentle cover-ings of leaves and brush. I remember being fully present toeach turning of the raft. It was like being in an extendedmeditation fully alive and amazed by the beauty of life. This

Visions & Values cont. from page 1is how I see my ministry (life). I am blessed to be fullypresent in each moment which offers a new view of lifeitself as it moves through the events in our church and thelives of each of you. I am blessed to bear witness to thegreatness of your lives. Yes, sometimes there is much todo, and it is possible to be fully in each piece of it from theoffice work to the sacred ceremony. Life is holy, I am sograteful to see it. This image allows me to be peaceful, poisedand positive in each situation and to bring forward whatis mine to be and do. It makes my daily walk with yousacred and a meditation of the highest form.

There are many more possibilities. Consider what arethe images you hold for your life, because they are makingyour conditions, right now.

From my heart to yours, Rev. Kris

  • WHAT IS AN ENDOWMENT?From Your SSL Endowment Committee

Our Sanctuary for Spiritual Living Endowment wascreated by our Board of Trustees as a separate fund meant tosustain long-term financial stability for our Sanctuary forSpiritual Living. This fund is designed to be kept in tack, while the income from it is to be used by future generationsof our congregation to support the teaching of the Scienceof Mind, the upkeep of our facilities, and the good of ourcongregation.

A GOOD IDEAIts a good idea for everyone reading this article to have

a will. Through years of your hard work you have accumu-lated a lifetime of assets and it takes a properly drawn willfor the distribution of those assets to reflect your exactwishes. To help you accomplish exactly that, here are somegood ideas!

    1. Have a Will It sounds simple, but without a will youmay as well give all youve worked for to the state to giveaway for you. If you die without a will, the state must followvery specific rules for distributing your assets and it maynot be what or who you had in mind.

    2. Reflect What You Value Today The emphasis is ontoday. Suppose you wrote a will ten years ago and since thattime your life circumstances have changed. Its a good idea

to review your will periodically to ensure your ultimatewishes for family, friends and treasured values are reflected. Its a good time to consider the spiritual legacy you can createfor the world as you remember our Sanctuary in your plans.

    3. Its 10 p.m., Do you know Where Your Will Is? Quick, where is the original of your will? Who else knows where itis? How fast can it be located? If your will cant be found, its as if you never had one. Where ever you keep your will, make certain those most likely to be contacted in the eventof death are fully informed and can locate your will.

    4. Call Us to Let Us Know We would like to thank youpersonally for your generosity and vision for including usin your plans. And, we would welcome the opportunity todiscuss any aspect of your bequest to ensure we understandexactly how you want your wishes carried out.

There are other ways to remember our Sanctuary in yourplans. You can simply name the Sanctuary for Spiritual Livingas a beneficiary of your retirement accounts or as benefi-ciary/owner of a life insurance policy you no longer need. Ifwe can answer any questions, please contact the church office(626) 332-6838 or any member of the EndowmentCommittee, Wilvesta Morgan, James Kilgore, Victoria DelAguila, Rev. all of our classes is to open our thought to the possibility thatwe can create a better world a better world in our rela-tionships, our families, our work places, our churches, ourcommunities, our nation, and our planet.

Looking at this transcendent purpose, we begin to see thatits possibility rests on the foundation of what goes on in ourown inner lives. . . in the discovery and exploration of thepower of our thought. . . in the awakening, enrichment, andexpansion of our individual consciousness. . . so that eachof us is fully open to being all we can be, fully aware of thePresence within and the Unity of all life.

As this life-enrichment process unfolds in each of us, itpours into the Universal Consciousness, a vital force forchange in the world.

The two-fold goal for this class:1. To continue and expand our individual life-enrichment

process, building on the understanding and practice of spir-itual principles that was begun in the Foundation Class, and

    2. To consciously allow these life-enrichment processesto integrate in the creation of a personal vision for a betterworld.
