Our area has long been a gateway to London and we hope that whether you are coming to us from around the corner or around the world, you will enjoy this Festival hosted by the most dynamic and varied part of the city. As always, Spitalfields sits at the heart of our programming; its people and its places, its past and its present together inspire a Festival designed for locals and visitors to enjoy together, celebrating and discovering this unique place.

In 2012 we are pleased to welcome a new group of Associate Artists: the Gabrieli Consort & Players, who this year celebrate their 30th anniversary, innovative cellist Matthew Barley and tabla player, producer and composer Talvin Singh. Each Associate Artist has designed a series which captures and champions the spirit of Spitalfields. Alongside these strands we have some Dutch visitors, including the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Ton Koopman to open the Festival, and a mini-series of staged events in Village Underground and Shoreditch Town Hall bringing some of the UK’s most innovative theatre companies together with Festival regulars such as The Sixteen, London Sinfonietta and La Nuova Musica.

In and among these are our well-known assortment of world-class artists and local talent, performing in some of the most distinctive and characterful venues in London. There are also numerous opportunities to participate and create. The festivities culminate on 23 June in the streets of Spitalfields with a community party. All are welcome, whether you live here or are visiting, for a day of music, dance and activity for all the family. And as every good street party should, it will end with a performance of a new piece of music written for 200 voices, four horns and fire!

Matthew Barley is a cellist who has performed in over 50 countries. Whilst cello playing is at the centre of his career, his musical world has virtually no geographical, social or stylistic boundaries. Founded by the prolific Ton Koopman, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra is internationally famous for its commitment to authentic early music performance. Opening the Festival with a rare London appearance they will perform some of JS Bach’s greatest works, composed in Germany in the same decade that Nicholas Hawksmoor was building his masterpiece Christ Church in Spitalfields.

Music is one of the most extraordinary phenomena conjured from the human imagination. It is certainly one of the most entertaining things we have managed to create, but, looking deeper, what is it actually for? Why do all cultures from all periods of history create music?

Opening his series as Associate Artist, cellist Matthew Barley explores these questions in an ear-and-mind-expanding event that combines performance with talk, improvisation, recorded examples and discussion.

The Fairy Queen is one of Purcell’s most glorious scores, brimming with invention, in lively dances and songs ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, via every emotion in between. The bittersweet and erotic undertones of Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream have rarely been as beautifully captured as they are in this wonderful exploration.

Our neighbours from Allen & Overy make their Festival debut! Having participated in a number of performances including The City Sings at the Barbican and Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) at Glyndebourne opera house, The A&O Singers now perform a programme in the spirit of Spitalfields, spanning baroque to modern works, together with instrumentalists from the firm.

The Night of the Unexpected has established cult status in Dutch cultural life and throughout Europe, and now makes its London debut. The idea is simple: an evening of short, sharp performances in swift succession, with a programme which cross-cuts through styles and genres, varying from experimental beats, electronics and improvised jazz to composed repertoire and conceptual pop music. Alongside these performances onedotzero will present an audiovisual installation of transporting, immersive and contemplative moving image work.

Talvin Singh is a Tabla player, electronic musician, music theorist, record producer and DJ. Widely considered the father of modern Asian electronic music, Singh is known for creating an innovative fusion of classical Indian music, drum and bass, and experimental sounds.

In the wake of their successful musical pilgrimages (Bach Cantata Pilgrimage, Pilgrimage to Santiago), the Monteverdi Choir and Sir John Eliot Gardiner prepare to celebrate their 50th birthday in style in 2014 with a pilgrimage along the ancient via francigena road from Canterbury to Rome. Retracing the steps of the original pilgrims, they will bring back to life exceptionally beautiful Renaissance polyphony in some of the continent’s most spectacular churches and cathedrals.

Set in some of Spitalfields’ most secluded and little-known venues including Dennis Severs’ House and our local masonic temple, Undiscovered Spitalfields explores the diverse sonic capabilities of the bell, reflecting on the various roles and guises of this often underestimated instrument.

John Tavener The Protecting Veil

Since its premiere by Steven Isserlis and the BBC Symphony Orchestra nearly 25 years ago at the BBC Proms, John Tavener’s The Protecting Veil has enjoyed huge success worldwide with cellists and audiences alike. It is a monumental prayer – an “icon in sound” to quote Tavener – that brings out the supreme singing qualities of the cello. Matthew Barley concludes his series with this late night performance alongside some of the best of the next generation of string players.

From its earliest inception as the Hydraulis to the latest in organ technology, the organ has had incredible influence on the history of music and sound. Spire celebrates this ‘Emperor of Instruments’ with live performances for organ, electronics, piano and voice, contrasting digital and analogue to create a rich sonic journey unique to each performance location. Since 2002 Ashley Solomon and Florilegium have been involved in sharing a little-known archive of music in collaboration with Bolivian musicians, unveiling a programme of 17th- and 18th-century works that lay hidden away for two centuries after the Jesuit missions in Bolivia were closed around 1767. This concert launches their 2012 European tour, in which they are performing more sacred and secular works from the Moxos and Chiquitos archives as well as from La Plata.

Insight: 6.30pm Father Piotr Nawrot, the Jesuit Polish priest responsible for discovering and editing much of this music, talks about the programme with Florilegium director Ashley Solomon.

2012 sees the centenary of one of the most influential and innovative creative minds in 20th-century music, John Cage. In this magical late-night concert, EXAUDI introduce Cage as a creator of ravishingly beautiful, mysterious music, from a spatial performance of Four² to the “plain harmony” of Hymns and Variations.

Our third and final Festival commission comes from English composer Nicola LeFanu, commissioned specifically for the Heath Quartet and performed with young bassoonist Bram van Sambeek. Complimented by Isang Yun’s 1983 Monologue for solo bassoon and Tchaikovsky’s third string quartet, this poignant new work reflects on the life of a Shoreditch wood-turner and kicks off a compact programme from some of the most exciting and original young players on the international chamber music scene.

Supported by Stephen Massil, the Britten–Pears Foundation and Spitalfields Music’s New Music Commission Fund. Commissioned in memory of Bill Massil, born 100 years ago and resident of Shoreditch.
