I can’t believe I’ve been employed one year already at Spiva! Really, a dozen

years considering my years of volunteer service through the board, various

committees, curriculum and program design, and work on exhibitions.

Looking back on my first year of “work”, I am so thankful to the Spiva

community for their encouragement of me and my mostly new staff, and

open-mindedness and excitement for new programs and exhibits. Time does fly

when you’re having FUN. We have several new members, individuals, families and businesses that are

partnering with us in various innovative ways. In addition, it’s been an honor to sit with many regular

donors, board members, and trustees who are invested financially and voluntarily with Spiva, and

have been for many decades. I take seriously my stewardship of Spiva, and all that has come before

me. I truly believe we need to widen the circle, though, as we grow and push: MORE memberships,

MORE volunteers, MORE cash, MORE time and talent shared in a mutually beneficial relationship. If

passion for the arts is your thing, let’s talk. Even if it’s just one hour or ten bucks a month, how can

we make each other happy? Are you strapped for time but can give a bit more money? Let’s talk.

No money but a bit of time? Let’s talk. Ready to exhibit your art work? Let’s talk. Want to take a class

you’re not seeing offered yet? Let’s talk. See you at Spiva!

REGIONAL GALLERYMAY 13-JULY 16TIM CHERRY: HEWN FROM NATURESPONSORED BY DR. LANCE AND SHARON BESHORE

“I started over 26 years ago on a path to discover my expression in art as it is related to my first love, wildlife, I continue that journey every day. My work depicts wildlife through the simplest lines, shapes and designs that I can create without losing representation, gesture or attitude.

I push the limits of anatomical accuracies in order to emphasize a stronger design, finding myself interpreting representational shapes and pushing them to boundaries of near abstraction.

I cast primarily in bronze, but feel my simplest and sometimes strongest designs are achieved when I am sculpting for high polish stainless steel and carving stone. My lines and shapes are kept to a minimum in order to draw in the viewer, causing them to become more involved in the interpretation of my work. I find this connection to be very inspiring.

I am constantly humbled by the awesome affects that are created in nature and the creatures that I observe there on a daily basis. I find an unlimited supply of ideas within the natural world. I continue to explore those inspirations through my art every day.

I hope to create the best possible sculpture that I can by building strong designs through shape, line, texture and color. Always pushing my artistic boundaries to achieve what has not been done before, reaching out and experimenting with new designs and gestures. Creating sculptures that are well orchestrated, balanced, emotionally interesting, stimulating and lyrical.”

James T. NguyenDescribe the work you have been doing at Spiva.I have been working on the re-organization of membership files, as well as getting Spiva's PastPerfect database program started. This program helps keep track of our membership data, and during my work I moved Spiva's membership data from Microsoft Excel into this program. As of now, I am almost finished with this project.

How often do you volunteer? How many hours have you contributed?I have been volunteering here at least once a week since mid-February for an average of three hours. So far, I have contributed about 27 hours of volunteering.

Why did you choose Spiva to spend your volunteer time?To make a long story short: I am taking this class called Service Learning at Missouri Southern State University, and the main objective of the class is to create and work on a project with an organization. One of my friends recommended Spiva, since I heard that they usually need help and is a great place to do service learning work. I did have other options in mind, but after meeting with the other organizations and Spiva, Spiva was the first to reach out to me. And so here I am!

What’s your favorite part of Spiva volunteerism?I really enjoy volunteering over here, and my favorite part of it is the people I work with! Also, getting to look at the art gallery from time to time is a bonus!

What would people be surprised to know about you? This is always a tough question to answer, but I have never been outside the United States, and would love to travel around to different parts of the world someday! I'm in my second year at MSSU, and have made so many wonderful friends of different cultures by getting myself to join in the MSSU International Club this school year and participating with the events! Learning more about them and their cultures have broadened my aspirations to travel someday!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Do Good, Feel GoodWe’re reaching out to our members and the community to ask that you help make Spiva yours by volunteering with us throughout the year. We know your time is valuable so why not spend an evening with us mingling with friends, eating Joplin’s best food, and drinking your favorite beverage during special events like Art on Tap, Art Night Out, or exhibit openings. You could also share an inspiring conversation with artists, writers, musicians, community leaders, and families while at the reception desk. We’re always looking for help with setting up events, door greeters, and hosts for our events. You can commit to as little as a couple of hours a month or join us weekly at Spiva Center for the Arts. Here are specific ways you can help:

CLASSROOM ASSISTANTSYou or you and a friend to assist the art instructor in a preschool-middle school class, typically 3:30-5 or weekends.

EXHIBIT OPENINGS5-10 people to greet and clean up on opening nights: your family and friends, civic groups such as book clubs, Bible studies, Rotary, Kiwanis, PEO, etc.

GREETERS FOR SPECIAL EVENTS2-3 people to greet and clean up during special events such as artist talks, Art Night Out, family workshops, etc.

FRONT DESKYou or you and a friend can be an art ambassador at our front desk once a week or once a month on a consistent schedule. You’ll get training.

If you’re interested in donating your time please contact, Aaron Skapik, via email at [email protected]
