Evaluation, showcases the students’ innovative designs and concepts and I am sure the rest of the

Competitions such as BAJA SAEINDIA play an integral role in the persistent quest for better designs,

newer technology and more refined products. The platform is unique to tap the fertile, unbiased, all -

accepting mind of the youth, where students can learn from practical and true-life experiences working

under the guidance of industry representatives, while companies get a wealth of fresh, outsider per-

spective and, unique solutions from these aspiring youngsters. Ford India is glad to support BAJA

SAEINDIA as it is a true representation of innovation and creativity.

I was the one who was advocating that unless our boys are to that level where we can compete with the

international drivers, we should not invite them. But now I am very proud and I want our international

affairs to happen very soon, and may be next year. This is the best way, train yourself in your own envi-

ronment and then go and take on the world!

I think this kind of event is really good for the engineering students. They seem to have come a long way

from the last year and many more colleges have participated this year…....For them it’s a lot of practical

knowledge ……...what they study in theory, they put it into use and in many ways they are competing

with other colleges, so the element of sport is involved in it as well….

WELCOME GUEST

Welcome to The Conrods, a team of 25 dedicated and passionate engineering students from

SRM University, Chennai. It is the world of future leaders who have already marked their posi-

tion in motorsports. Welcome to the team which always targets engineering excellence in asso-

ciation with the Society of Automotive Engineers. The Conrods is a fast growing team which

seeks your support to accelerate its pace to win.

The team Conrods is under the guidance of proactive faculty advisor Prof. Leenus Jesu Martin,

with the support of SRM University in the form of complete laboratory facilities and partial fi-

nancial assistance. The primary objective of the team is to learn the skills required for designing

and fabricating an All-Terrain Vehicle that meets the legislation, is safe, comfortable, inexpen-

sive and aesthetically appealing (in order of priority).

The Conrods of SRM University was established in the year 2008 and since then it has partici-

pated in three BAJA SAE events, two in India and one in South Africa. BAJA SAE events give

an environment of healthy competition with chance to expand the knowledge base and techni-

cal skills, while having fun all along the way. Here, students are encouraged to use knowledge

gained in the classroom in order to come up with the creative and innovative designs. Hands-

on knowledge gained from this and other student projects give the students a competitive edge

The Vision of SRM is to advance knowledge and research, building leaders in technol-

ogy, medicine, management, science and other areas of scholarship that will best serve

the nation and the world in the 21st century.

SRM University has been ranked No.1 private engineering University in the country by

the Times of India by a GfK mode survey, Financial Express Survey 2009, ZEE news &

DNA 2010 survey and is also accredited by NAAC with a grade equivalent to 5 star rat-

ing which is seen as a reflection of the excellent educational system in place.

SRM has MoU with reputed foreign Universities enabling the students to widen up their

horizons.

Many Industry-University collaborations are done, which facilitates the overall develop-

ment of the students.

At present, nearly 10 foreign faculties are teaching at SRM University on long tenure.

Many more visit the campus for academic and research purposes on an on-going basis.

This gives both the students and the faculty greater opportunity for mutual interaction

and learning.

The department of automobile engineering has a team of highly qualified, dedicated and

experienced faculties. Research activities are in progress in the areas of alternative fuels,

vehicle dynamics and new trends in engine design.

The BAJA SAE INDIA Student Challenge is a feted student competition that presents the

undergraduate engineering students with a simulating task of designing, fabricating and

validating an All-Terrain Vehicle. The history of the event dates back to the mid 70’s when

it originated in USA and since then it is conducted annually at several locations across the

globe, including USA, Mexico, Canada, South Africa, Brazil and Korea, witnessing partici-

pation from prominent technical schools around the world.

The BAJA SAE INDIA was successfully held in 2007, 2009 and 2010 at the NATRAX

(National Test Tracks) facility of NATRIP (National Automotive Testing & R&D Infra-

structure Project) situated at Pithampur in Madhya Pardesh which has shown an exponen-

tial growth.

The project inculcates and channelizes the exuberance of the youth by providing them a

global platform to prove their worth, giving them a pragmatic exposure to the real world

challenges as faced in the industry. Making the students realize their talent through such an

experience fulfills the prime objective of bringing out the aptitude to serve the nation for

years to come, in continuation with the vision Automotive Mission Plan (AMP 2016), a

dream to make India an International Automotive hub.

Environmental concern is the key issue being faced by every industry. With the climate change be-

ing prominent one, every economy is actively involved in taking steps to curb the harmful effects of

industrialization and modernization, through knowledge sharing and use of advance technology.

BAJA SAE INDIA has taken a proactive stance towards environment sustainability through all of its

initiatives. Minimal waste of resources, emission control, and use of environment friendly materials

with the concept End of life Vehicles is the theme as chosen by BAJA SAE INDIA.

BAJA SAE INDIA pledges everybody’s cooperation for the same. The teams are encouraged to work

on the concept of ‚Go Green‛ and shall be awarded in appreciation and to work without any

bounds and letting the creative mind generate innovative ideas which would drive the future. All

ABOUT THE ATV

Vehicle design for 2011

2011 ATV

Let’s go through some of the features of The Conrods 2011 BAJA vehicle:

Weight Reduction:

Reducing the overall weight of the vehicle is our primary objective. We will incorporate light

weight components like aluminum wheel hubs and low density steel tubes to bring down the

kerb weight to a mere 210Kg.

Low Emissions:

We are developing an exhaust system to reduce the emissions in order to compete for the

‘GREEN VEHICLE AWARD’. It is an innovative design which utilizes a counter flow cooling

jacket and a preheated 3-way catalytic converter.

SRM University is scheduled to host the 98th Indian Science Congress in January 2011. It will

be inaugurated by Dr. Manmohan Singh; Prime Minister of India & will be attended by over

The purpose of this letter is to express that the Department of Automo-

bile Engineering at SRM University is committed to support The Con-

rods, which is organized through the SRM student chapter of Society of

Automotive Engineers (SAE).

This group of students has demonstrated, through extensive background

work and organizational efforts, that they will be a competitive entry in

the BAJA SAE INDIA competition. The team now counts 25 members,

including students from 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of various departments of

School of Mechanical Engineering, SRM University. The team has a

very comprehensive plan both for the vehicle design and for team ad-

ministration.

Our department is resolved to support The Conrods to our best ability.

We provide computing resources, both for technical purposes (CAD)

and for team administration. Students are allowed to access every labo-

ratory and workshops in the university. Finally we provide students a
