The 1900m race, a pointer towards the season finale - the Gr1 P/A Qatar Arabian Trophée des Poulains in October at Saint- Cloud – was won by Hadi De Carrere (FR) (Nieshan x Viki De Carrere) in the colours of Sheail bin Khalifa Al Kuwari by a margin of four and a half lengths. Only four, of the six expected, runners started in this race reserved for colts, with H H Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani’s homebred Sir Monlau (FR) (Al Mamun Monlau x Al Anqa) and H H Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani’s homebred Fara’aj (FR) (Amer x Massamarie) declared non-runners. Hidalgo Du Croate (FR) (Al Mamun Monlau x Beanie Du Croate) set off in the lead with Hadi De Carrere in second, fol- lowed by Al Shaqab Racing’s homebred Alhafar (FR) (Al Mamun Monlau x Farh) and Ecuries Royales D’oman’s Mun- tasir (FR) (Josco Du Cayrou x Emeria Du Cayrou) closing the rear. The order remained the same until the end of the final turn. Hadi De Carrere, who is trained by Thomas Fourcy, was caught slightly off balance when Muntasir kicked for home, but once Hadi De Carrere found his stride, he, with Julien Augé in the saddle, fought back to take the lead and showed nice accel- eration inside the final 200 meters to put plenty of distance between him and his rivals. Alhafar finished in second for Al Shaqab Racing and trainer Mme JF. Bernard. He was ridden by Jean-Bernard Eyquem. Muntasir was a further short head in third under Mickael Forest for trainer F. Sanchez. The pacesetter Hildalgo Du Coate weakened in the straight, finishing 7 lengths back. “Sir Monlau, who was a non-runner, is a top class colt, and Hadi De Carrere, though not quite his class, is not far off. He’s won well here to prove that. He should continue to improve. I’m delighted with his behaviour and he has a nice future ahead of him. We will look at the Gr1 at Deauville and then Saint- Cloud," Fourcy commented after the race. Meanwhile, Alsaher (FR) (Mared Al Sahra x Assefa D’Aroco), a three-year-old Purebred Arabian colt, bred and owned by H H Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani, made a perfect debut at La Teste-de-Buch yesterday by winning the Prix Nez d’Or by a short head under jockey Val- entin Seguy. In second, was Muqla (FR) (Tabarak x Sarahmina) a homebred for H.H Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani. The grey filly is trained by Didier Guillemin and was ridden by Alexandre Gavilan. Al Shaqab Racing’s homebred Alhareth (FR) (Al Mamun Monlau x Tameemah) finished a further nose behind in third for the winning trainer. The bay colt was ridden by Julien Auge. Trained by François Rohaut, the eventual winner sat up on the pace in third position, with Alhareth leading the field. Coming together in the final turn, it was a closely fought finish between the first top three, with Alsaher just coming to snatch the win on the line. Alsaher is out of Assefa D’aroco (Tidjani). Group and listed stars on show in Gr1 Qatar Prix Jean Prat at Deauville today THE PENINSULA – DEAUVILLE As part of the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s (QREC) strategy to enhance Qatar’s presence at the world’s top racing events, the QREC-sponsored Qatar Prix Jean Prat will be run at Deauville, France, today. The 2020 renewal of the Gr1 race, reserved for three-year-olds over a seven- furlong trip will be the feature event of the QREC fully sponsored bumper nine-race card, which includes another group event and three listed races. The day will kick off at 2:25 pm and round off with the last race at 7:10 pm (Doha time). The Qatar Prix Jean Prat will start at 5:25 pm. Eleven group and listed winners have been declared in the Gr1 event and all of them have proved themselves over this trip. Al Shaqab Racing will be represented by the group winner and placed Wooded (IRE). The son of Wootton Bassett will be coming off a well-earned Gr3 victory, which was his first black-type success when he landed the Prix Texanita seeing off his nearest rival by three and a half lengths at Chantilly in May. The extra furlong at Deauville should not be a concern for the bay colt as four of his five career-starts have been over seven furlongs and he has not finished outside of the top three in all of them. Trained by Francis-Henri Graffard, Wooded will be taken to enhance his strike rate to three and gain his first Gr1 success for the silver and maroon colours. He will be partnered by Christophe Soumillon. André Fabre shares the title of the leading trainer of the Prix Jean Prat with François Mathet and François Boutin with five wins each. The master French trainer will be looking for his sixth success and holding the top spot with two group winners. Alson (GER) (Areion) won a Gr1 last October in his penultimate start. Tropbeau (GB) (Showcasing), who is the only filly among the boys, came fourth in a Gr1 last month following a Gr3 win in May. Charlie Appleby will have two runners. Pinatubo (IRE) (Shamardal) boasts an excellent strike rate with six wins in eight starts, including two Gr1s and a Gr2. Aidan O’Brien will be fielding two runners. Lope Y Fernandez (IRE) (Lope De Vega) will be ridden by Ioritz Mendizabal. Arizona (IRE) (No Nay Never), who will be steered by Ryan Moore, has a Gr2 win under his belt and that was in June last year. Molatham (GB) (Night Of Thunder), who won a Gr3 last month in his latest start will be representing Roger Varian and will be partnered by James Crowley. Kenway (FR) (Galiway), who is trained by Frederic Rossi, has won three races so far, including a listed and Gr 3. He will be ridden by Theo Bachelot. The Ralph Beckett-trained kinross (GB) (Kingman) has had two attempts at Gr 1 level and was mid-field in both of them and Pinatubo was third in the latest one in early June. It is interesting that Qatar Racing Limited’s Kameko (USA) (Kitten’s Joy) was the winner of both events. Harry Bentley will partner Kinross. Malotru (GB) (Casamento) will be seeking his first group success, for his trainer Marco Botti, following three attempts at this level rounding off with the second place in a Gr2 in early June. Andrea Atzeni will be in the saddle. In addition, the nine-race card will feature another group race and three listed runs. The Gr3 Qatar Prix de Ris-Orangis for three-year-old and older horses over six furlongs will start at 6:00 pm Doha time. The Listed Qatar Prix Kistena will be reserved for three-year-olds over six fur- longs and will start at 3:35 pm. The Listed Qatar Prix Amandine will be for three- year-olds over seven furlongs and will start at 4:50 pm. The Listed Qatar Prix De La Calonne - Fonds Europeen De L’elevage will start at 6:35 pm. The meeting will kick off at 2:25 pm (Doha time) with the Qatar Prix des Year- lings for two-year-olds over six furlongs. Seven runners have been declared in the Class 2 race, including Sheail bin Khalifa Al Kuwari’s Saqr (FR). Burnley draw ends Liverpool’s perfect home record AFP – LONDON Liverpool’s bid to set a new Premier League points record was rocked by a 1-1 draw against Burnley, while Norwich were relegated as Michail Antonio’s four-goal blitz fired West Ham to a thumping win yesterday. Jurgen Klopp’s side are chasing the record total of 100 points set by Manchester City in 2018, but the champions have no margin for error after being held at Anfield for the first time this season. They have 93 points and need to win their remaining three matches against Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle to break City’s record. They would tie the 100- point mark if they win two and draw one of those matches. “For moments it was Liv- erpool against (Nick) Pope. We did everything right and he made saves but we should have scored more, that’s on us,” Klopp said. Liverpool took the lead when Andrew Robertson met Fabinho’s lofted pass with a powerful header in the 34th minute. But they were made to pay for missed chances as Burnley equalised in the 69th minute. It was the first time Liv- erpool had failed to win a home league game since January 2019. At Carrow Road, a seventh successive league defeat con- demned Norwich to relegation as Antonio’s ruthless display boosted West Ham’s own sur- vival bid after a 4-0 victory. Troy Deeney scored two penalties as Watford improved their survival prospects with a 2-1 win against Newcastle at Vicarage Road. AP - SPIELBERG

Lewis Hamilton showed why he’s one of Formula One’s best ever in wet conditions, domi-nating on a rain-drenched track to take pole position for the Styrian Grand Prix yesterday.

It was the Mercedes driver’s record-extending 89th career pole and particularly impressive as he first beat Red Bull driver Max Verstappen’s mark and then his own leading mark on his final lap.

“ T h a t w a s awesome,” Hamilton said.

“Honestly it was a fantastic lap, that lap was as close to perfect as I could get it in those conditions.”

He placed 1.216 seconds ahead of Ver-stappen and 1.398 clear of McLaren driver Carlos Sainz Jr.

Despite the diffi-culty level, he kept going faster.

“I definitely had my heart in my mouth,” Hamilton said. “You have a cloud of spray ahead of you, and the same behind. You don’t know where anyone is, you don’t know what time it is. All you know is that you’re going super fast.”

It was arguably Hamilton’s best pole since Singapore two years ago. Although that lap was spectacularly quick, it was on a bone-dry track with searing heat, humidity and floodlights illuminating the circuit.

This was the polar opposite: A treacherous, slippery track with huge puddles and dark rolling clouds overhead elimi-nating much visibility.

“It was on the limit but that’s racing. I’m glad they didn’t take that away from us, it’s so special being out there, so difficult,” Hamilton said. “These are the hardest conditions we ever drive

in, just one small lapse in con-centration and you’re off (the track).. . an incredible challenge.”

Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas could not match him this time, qualifying in fourth place after taking pole and winning last Sunday’s Aus-trian GP.

Verstappen swerved a little on his final attempt at beating Hamilton’s time.

“It could have been better but I don’t think it was enough to beat Lewis,” the Dutch driver said.

It was the best career result in qualifying for Sainz Jr. and further evidence of McLaren’s improvement after Lando Norris finished last weekend’s race in third place.

“It feels amazing, especially that qualifying was one of the toughest I have done,” Sainz Jr. said. “There was so much aqua-planing it was crazy. We’re completely blind in the car, we don’t see what’s at the front, what’s at the back.”

Sainz. Jr is joining Ferrari next year and showed a coolness under pressure.

“I did enjoy myself but I must say it was quite stressful,” he said. But this was another dismal day for Ferrari, with Sebastian Vettel 10th and Charles Leclerc 11th.

“The main problem was we were just not quick enough,” Leclerc said. “We’re just too slow.”

Driving rain washed out the third and final practice at midday and threatened quali-

fying altogether. But the cars managed to finally get out onto the Red Bull Ring at around 3:45 p.m. local time (1345 GMT) even though rain was still lashing down.

With drivers told the rain would soon get heavier, they were advised to post a solid time quickly in order to get into the second part of qualifying.

Verstappen said “I can’t see a thing” and Romain Grosjean slid into gravel.

Some unexpected names popped up at the top of the leaderboard, before order was restored as Hamilton, Bottas and Verstappen swapped leading times.

“Leave me to it,” Ham-ilton snapped at his engineer over radio, trying

to keep his concentration. With two minutes left in Q1,

the first part of qualifying, Italian driver Antonio Giovinazzi lost control of his Alfa Romeo and it swerved sideways and then backward into a crash barrier. His car had to be lifted off the track.

The rain was so heavy throughout the morning that firefighters removed excess water from the roof of one empty hospitality building.

The race is being held without fans because of the coronavirus pandemic. It changed names from last week but is being held at the same track in Spielberg, surrounded by the Styrian mountains.

Golf: Morikawa tames stormy Muirfield to extend his leadREUTERS - DUBLIN

Collin Morikawa (pictured) had never played Muirfield Village Golf Club before this week but one would hardly know by looking at his scorecard as he moved into a three-shot, second-round lead at the Workday Charity Open in Dublin, Ohio on Friday.

Morikawa, who began the day with a one-shot lead, was four under after 15 holes when play was halted for 77 minutes due to dangerous weather. After the break he added two more birdies for a six-under 66 to reach 13 under on the week.

That left the world number 29 Morikawa, whose two-day

total marked the second lowest in course history, three shots clear of Justin Thomas (66) and Kevin Streelman (64), whose afternoon rounds were also interrupted by a weather delay.

Sam Burns (66) and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama (68) lurked four back of the rising 23-year-old Morikawa, who had made 22 consecutive cuts to start his

pro career before missing his first two weeks ago at t h e T r a v e l e r s Championship.

He has bounced back in a big way at Muirfield.

“We talk about the course, I think it does fit my eye,” Morikawa said of the Jack Nicklaus-designed layout.

“I’ve been able to leave myself some really good numbers into approach shots. I’ve been keeping myself in the fairway for the most part, and that obviously helps.”

Morikawa, who began his day on the back nine, reached the turn at one under after mixing three birdies with two bogeys. He caught fire at the par-four second when he made the first of four consec-utive birdies.

The American then needed four shots to reach the green at the par-four sixth hole, where

he went on to make a bogey before play was interrupted.

Among those likely to miss the cut in the round, which was called for darkness with a handful of players still in the field, were world No.6 Brooks Koepka and three-time major champion Jordan Spieth.

AFP – SOUTHAMPTON

Alzarri Joseph struck twice and West Indies captain Jason Holder removed England stand-in skipper Ben Stokes as the tourists regained the initiative in the first Test with a late flurry of wickets at Southampton yesterday,

England were 284-8 in their second innings at the close of the fourth day, a lead of 170 runs in a match that marks international cricket's return from lockdown.

England fought back during a fourth-wicket partnership of 98 between Zak Crawley and Stokes.

But their 249-4 was soon transformed into 279-8 as five wickets fell for just 30 runs inside the final hour.

No sooner had Stokes fallen, then Crawley was caught and bowled by paceman Joseph for a Test-best 76.

Suddenly, England's two batsmen at the crease - Pope and Jos Buttler -- were both on nought.

Buttler, who overturned being lbw to Holder for five, fell for nine when bowled through a huge gap between bat and pad by Joseph.

World Cup-winning wick-etkeeper Buttler has now made just one hundred in his 42 Tests.

And there was still time before the close for Windies spearhead quick Shannon Gabriel (3-62) to bowl both Dom Bess and Ollie Pope.

England were still one run behind West Indies' first innings 318 when Crawley came to the crease.

But the 22-year-old, in his fifth Test, completed a well-made fifty when he reverse-swept off-spinner Roston Chase for four.

Crawley topped his previous Test best of 66 against South Africa at Johannesburg in January.

Stokes, skippering the side in the absence of Joe Root,

continued to lead from the front by driving Gabriel for four.

The all-rounder had already top-scored with 43 in England's meagre first-innings 204 before the paceman was the pick of the hosts' attack with 4-49.

But for the second time in the match he fell to Holder.

The towering West Indies paceman squared Stokes up and had him caught by Shai Hope, cleverly positioned as the finer of two men in the gully for the left-handed batsman.

It was a tactical as well as personal triumph for Holder,

ranked ahead of Stokes as the world's leading Test all-rounder. There was more joy for the Windies when Crawley, aiming legside, was caught and bowled by Joseph.

England resumed on 15-0 in the first of a three-match behind closed doors series.

Although a batting all-rounder, Chase had taken a Test-best 8-60 when West Indies beat England at his Barbados home ground last year en route to a 2-1 series win.

Chase made the initial breakthrough on Saturday when

Rory Burns (42) carelessly cut him to backward point.

Fellow opener Dom Sibley made a painstaking fifty off 161 balls. The very next delivery saw Sibley play on to Gabriel only for third umpire Michael Gough to rule the bowler had been guilty of a marginal no-ball.

But, two balls later, Sibley - still on 50 -- glanced Gabriel to Dowrich as he was yet again caught down the legside in his fledgling Test career.

Joe Denly, potentially com-peting for a place with Sibley when Root returns following the

birth of his daughter for next week's second Test at Old Trafford, needed a big score to bolster a lowly Test average of under 30.

But instead he fell tamely for 29 when chipping Chase to Holder at short midwicket.

The West Indies had been on top for most of this match, with Holder taking a Test-best 6-42 after losing the toss.

Kraigg Brathwaite then made 65, the opener's first Test fifty in 22 innings, and Dowrich 61 as the tourists established a valuable first-innings lead of 114.

Football world mourns English and Irish icon Jack CharltonAFP – LONDON

Jack Charlton, a member of the England 1966 World Cup winning side who went on to become a cult hero as Republic of Ireland boss, has died aged 85, his family announced yesterday.

Charlton -- elder brother of his fellow World Cup winning team-mate Bobby -- was also an integral part of the Leeds side that won the 1969 League title and the 1972 FA Cup.

English football’s governing body the Football Association (FA) said they were “devastated” by the news.

Geoff Hurst, the hat-trick hero of the 1966 World Cup final against West Germany, saluted his former England team-mate.

“Jack was the type of player and person that you need in a team to win a World Cup,” Hurst tweeted.

“He was a great and lovable char-acter and he will be greatly missed. The world of football and the world beyond football has lost one of the greats. RIP old friend.”

The Premier League said players

would wear black armbands and hold a minute’s silence before kick-off during this weekend’s games in tribute.

Charlton enjoyed a storied spell as manager of Ireland guiding them to several major tournaments, including a memorable run to the 1990 World Cup quarter-finals.

Such was his achievement with Ireland that he was awarded the Republic’s most distinguished award, honorary Irish citizenship in 1996.

“He was an iconic figure on and off the pitch, in England and Ireland,” Irish prime minister Micheal Martin said.

“He came to personify a golden era in Irish football. The Italia ‘90 campaign was more than just a football tour-nament for us all, it was a time of unbridled joy and celebration throughout the nation.” Charlton’s family had earlier released a statement announcing his passing.

“Jack died peacefully on Friday, July 10 at the age of 85. He was at home in Northumberland, with his family by his side,” read a family statement.

Leeds issued their own tribute to

‘Big Jack’ whose uncom-promising style as a defender epitomised the r u g g e d a p p r o a c h demanded by the club’s legendary former boss Don Revie.

“Leeds United are deeply saddened to learn club legend Jack Charlton passed away last night at the age of 85 following a long-term illness,” read a Leeds statement.

“Charlton made a club record 773 appearances for Leeds United over a 23-year period as a player, becoming one of the all-time great central defenders in the game.”

Brother Bobby’s club Manchester United also paid tribute.

“Our deepest condolences go to all the Charlton family for their immensely sad loss,” United said.

The 35-times capped Charlton managed at club level with

Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle.

But it was turning Ireland from also-rans into a respected international side that Charlton will be remembered for.

A famous group stage win over England at Euro 1988 was followed by

Charlton leading Ireland to their first World Cup in 1990.

They emerged unbeaten from a group featuring England, Holland and Egypt, beat Romania on penalties in the last 16 and narrowly lost to hosts Italy in the last eight.

Ireland also reached the last 16 in the 1994 World Cup -- beating Italy in New York -- and the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) said he had “changed Irish football forever”.

Crucially, Charlton secured the likes of

Scotland-born Ray Houghton and England-born Andy Townsend and Liv-erpool great John Aldridge after unearthing some family links to Ireland.

“What a football man, loved and adored, especially in Ireland. The best manager I was lucky to play for,” said Aldridge.

Kolkata's Eden Gardens to be used forcoronavirus quarantine

AFP – KOLKATA

Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens cricket stadium is to be used as a quar-antine centre for Indian police who have the coronavirus, officials said yesterday.

With the city’s hos-pitals under growing pressure, hundreds of beds are to be set up in the 80,000 capacity stadium that was used for the 1987 World Cup final.

Nearly 550 Kolkata police have tested pos-itive for the coronavirus and two have died.

“It is our duty to help and support the admin-istration in this hour of crisis.

"The quarantine facility will be used for police personnel who are COVID-19 warriors,” said Cricket Association of Bengal president Avishek Dalmiya.

The beds will be put in galleries around the seating and not on the pitch that was last used by India for a day-night Test against Bangladesh last November.

“Such areas would be thoroughly segregated as a safety measure,” added Dalmiya.

The stadium is also used by the Kolkata Knight Riders Indian Premier League side but this year’s tournament has been repeatedly postponed because of the pandemic.

India’s nationwide coronavirus toll rose Sat-urday to 820,916 cases with 22,193 deaths.
