The Devils included three Eagles players so that they could field a full team of 15 players. Trevor Presley, Zeb Pomare and Jono Kells were the players ‘traded’ to the Devils and Presley had an impact, keeping the Devils well in the contest at half time where just 10 points separated the teams with the Eagles in front. In perhaps the turning point of the match, Presley suffered a nasty broken forearm and was rushed to hospital. Stand-in Eagles coach Stephen Ariston said it was a competitive match. ‘‘It was a great game but TP was unlucky with his broken arm,’’ Ariston said. ‘‘He played with great heart and it’s also great to have Zeb (Pamore) and Jono Kells help- ing the Devils out . . . we just wanted to see four teams.’’ Ariston said Haider Sakhra also played under duress with a cut head from two head clashes during the match. Jared Torres, Dustin Briscoe and Mark Mitchell were influ- ential for the Eagles. Devils caretaker coach Steve Smith was proud of his ‘‘patched up’’ team. ‘‘We’re ecstatic to get a side on the field and want to em- phasise our gratitude to CARU for helping us out,’’ Smith said. Dave Thomas played su- perbly along with Presley be- fore his injury and Phil Childs was effective off the back. ‘‘Everyone dug deep to come together to put in the effort that they did,’’ Smith said. Demons do enough to top Venom BASEBALL Nick Kossatch DEMONS had a fighting 6-2 win against an improving Venom in round five of baseball at Lyle Kempster Field on Friday night. Venom fought back after being behind 5-0 to outscore the Demons in the latter stages. A solid hit from the Demons’ Wes Tohi managed to penetrate the field set by the Venom team. Most of the hits by the Demons batters went straight to the Venom fielders and Demons co-coach Alan Bell said it was something the team had to work on. ‘‘We didn’t set the world on fire and didn’t capitalise with our batting,’’ Bell said. ‘‘Venom played well but we did what we had to do and get a win.’’ Scott Arnold pitched well and was largely responsible for keeping Venom down to just two runs. Demons had two late changes before the match with Luke Wilkinson and Stuart Sexton not playing. Venom coach Rashad Tomlin said his team played well defensively. ‘‘We were more consistent on the field and to just hold the Demons to just six runs was a huge effort,’’ Tomlin said. ‘‘Very pleased from that point of view, but we’ve just got to get better at the plate.’’ Starting pitcher Brian Odell and closing pitcher Han Sangwoo were impressive in limiting the Demons batters, who have the ability to hit the ball well. Panthers produced a stirring 7-6 win against Norths in the late game in a thrilling contest. Panthers player/coach David Kerrin said the clash was always close. ‘‘The game was a tight affair from the start and both teams came out firing,’’ Kerrin said. ‘‘We were able to capitalise on a couple of errors from Norths to get runs on the board.’’ Kerrin said Adam Erickson, in his final match for Panthers before joining the army, had an outstanding game in left field. Corey Sutton was solid at second base as was Stacy Richards playing at short stop, the coach said. Panthers led 7-4 going into the bottom of the sixth but then opposition batters got on top with big hitting from Cyril Dixon, Ricky Mentha and Nathan Bell almost getting Norths a win. Hybrid fever helping kids CHARITY RUGBY LEAGUE SOME local players will be playing for a great cause tomorrow from 6pm at Anzac Oval. A team representing the Coast to Coast for Kids Adventure Challenge will take on an Alice Springs-based side in a hybrid-type match between Oztag and rugby league. Spokesperson Nathan Coelli said two local stars may feature in the event where donations will go toward the Women’s and Children’s Hospital Foundation in conjunction with the Alice Springs Hospital. ‘‘We’re hoping McKeowen Medal- list Toby Barr and Keegan Medallist Chaz Solomon are going to play for the local team,’’ Coelli said. ‘‘It’s good for rugby here for this to happen.’’ Coelli hopes for a big crowd and weather conditions are expected to be perfect tomorrow night. Fitness wins in end as Cubs team take bite out of Warriors RUGBY UNION Nick Kossatch CUBS overcame a sluggish start to run away with a 29-12 win against the War- riors in the second rugby game at Anzac Oval on Saturday night. The match was tight but gradually the superior fitness of the Cubs wore down a tiring Warriors outfit. Cubs captain Joel Plummer again was instrumental in the win while Jake McDonald found space to be a dangerous player who used his pace to great effect. Both he and Junior Saena scythed through the Warriors’ defence for tries that extended the Cubs’ lead late in the second half. Cubs’ Sharali Mohummed played well until he was stretchered off with suspected concussion. Cubs’ coach Junior Po-Ching said some decisions by the referees frustrated him but added his team got the job done. ‘‘Joel Plummer our captain led from the front and he always plays well,’’ Po-Ching said. ‘‘Jake McDonald was good as was Sharali Mohummed until he got hurt.’’ Warriors’ player/president James Nolan said the team started well. ‘‘We held them out for the most part but we’re missing a few blokes and fitness is a bit down,’ Nolan said. ‘‘Lindsay Hereora, Isaac Salei, Jethro Campbell and Adrian Shelford played well for us whenever they had the ball in their hands.’’

Cubs captain Joel Plummer again wasinstrumental in the win while JakeMcDonald found space to be a dangerousplayer who used his pace to great effect.

Both he and Junior Saena scythedthrough the Warriors’ defence for triesthat extended the Cubs’ lead late in thesecond half.

Cubs’ Sharali Mohummed played welluntil he was stretchered off withsuspected concussion.

Cubs’ coach Junior Po-Ching said somedecisions by the referees frustrated himbut added his team got the job done.

Warriors’ player/president JamesNolan said the team started well.
