1. First step on the long term 'Player development'

Active start - 0 - 6 years (Junior/ Senior infants) Learning to Train - 6 - 8 years ( 1st/ 2nd class) Training to Train - 8 - 12 years (2nd - 6th class) FUNdamental movement skills, Motor skills, Conditioning

2. What Skills should a U10 have when moving onto the U12 grade?

Kicking (Both feet) Bounce with either hand Solo (2 Feet) Evasion skills with ball Pick-Up (2 Feet) Movement Skills with Speed off both sides

3. Incorporate' FUNdamental Movement Skills', 'Motor skills' and 'Conditioning' into the session (Does not have to be Specific to Gaelic Football)These can be introduced into Fun routine, Warm up and a Fitness Exercise

Session PlanWarm up

1. Warm up

Players run around and explore Boundaries. Players are to keep changing direction at all times

Bring in different Movements & Movement Patterns mimicking What is done during a Football game

React to coaches call/ action Create a relationship with team mates - 'High Five, Low Five' Fun conditioning exercises - walking plank, walking lunge, glass ceiling Fun game - Numbers game

2. Fundamental Movement Skills

Agility - Create a side to side scenario using cones to introduce and develop agility.

- Shorten cones as the drill goes on to introduce the 'side step'

Balance & Co Ordination - Create a scenario where the player has to go into awkward positions and their balance and Co Ordination is challenged

- E.G. on one leg, side lunge, front lunge, hands extended in all positions

Sharks and Fishes

Rules The coach is the shark. The players are the fish. The players run from one side of the square across to the

other side. If tagged they become a shark. Keep playing until one fish is left, that player is the winner!

Purpose:

The purpose of this game is to warm up all players. They are always on the move and don’t even realise it.

Rules The players jog inside the cones. ¼ of the players are given a ball. The players with the ball have to solo to move. The players with the ball knock the runners out by hand

passing the ball below the waist. When the ball is on ground it has to be picked up correctly. If the ball is caught, the person that hand passed it is out. Keep playing until one player is left.

Purpose

All players have to move into space. They also use the hand pass, solo, pick up and catching skills.

Rules Make a square with four cones all different colours. Cone in the middle. Balls are scattered around the square. Players gather around the middle cone. Coach calls out colour players have to run to that cone. Players pick up ball as they run to cone. Players drop the ball as they jog back to middle cone

Purpose

This improves players’ reaction. This game could be used as a warm up.

Ship/Shore/Deck

Rules The ship is to the left, deck is in the middle and shore is to the

right. To start get all players at deck. Coach call out ship, shore or deck. Players run as fast as they can to that position and pick up ball

as they run. To make it harder the coach points at shore but calls deck etc. Last person to place is out. Two people will end up in the final.

PurposeThis improves players reaction and gets them to run faster if they

want to stay in the game longer.

Rats and RabbitsRATS RABBITS

Rules Coach makes two groups. One group is rats and the other is

rabbits. Have two feet between the two groups. Coach calls out rats or rabbits. If rabbits are called they run to their cone strike the sliotar on

the ground as the rats try to catch them before they get there. If coach calls out rats the do the same. Whoever catches there partner first three times wins.

Purpose

To get away from your opponent as fast as possible

Rules Between 2 - 6 players act as taggers depending on number of

children playing. If tagged that player freezes. To become free another player must crawl through the tagged

player’s legs.

Purpose

All players are playing all the time. It gets players moving in different directions. It also gets the players that are crawling under

the legs getting up faster.

Reaction Game

Rules A ball between two players Each player same distance from ball. Coach call out body part e.g. (head, toes, knees etc) and the

players puts hands there. When the coach calls out ball the first person to pick up the

ball wins.

Purpose

Improves the player’s reaction time.

Flick game

Rules All players inside the square have a ball. Players move around the square dribbling the ball. Try to keep possession of the ball while trying to knock other

players ball out of square. If the ball is knocked out of square that player is out. There will be two players in the final.

Purpose

Dribbling under pressure and trying to keep possession.

Rules Players run around picking up and dropping the ball. When the coach blows the whistle the players have to sit on

the ball. Players that don’t have a ball are out. Coach takes a ball away for each round. There will be two players in final with just one ball.

Purpose

You have to pick up the ball properly therefore the pickup will improve.

Concentration

Rules All players gather in a circle and coach goes in the middle. All players must put free hands behind there back. Coach hand passes to player. If they drop the ball they are out or if they throw it back to you

they are out. Coach tries to trick players by looking at one player but

passing to another. Coach can also pretend to pass it to a player and if they move

out there hand to catch it they are out. Last person standing wins.

Purpose

This game improves the technique in the hand pass, as every player will get individual feedback.

Circle speed X X

Rules All players gather in a circle. Coach puts 5 balls in the middle of the circle or less depending

on numbers. Coach then gives a number to each player ranging from 1 - 5. Coach calls out a number e.g. number 1, all the number ones

run around the circle in the same direction and come back where they left from and run in and pick up a ball.

If they get a ball they stay in game if not they sit down in their space in the circle.

Each round a ball will be taken away and the winners in the groups will race for the last ball.

PurposePlayers have to run as fast as they can and use the correct

technique to pickup the ball.

Rules Two teams on opposite sides. Every player has a number. Coach calls a number. Players run out contest the ball and try and score. Coach can call 2 numbers and they work as a team to try score.

Purpose

Playing against another player(s) just like a match situation.
