SPORTS NEWSLETTER

Another term of success …..

The Spring term saw RSA sports teams participate in a number of County and sports partnership competitions. In total RSA took part in 7 county finals last term alone.

In rugby, the U16 and U18 teams were County plate winners (U18 joint) and the U16 Girls Futsal team were crowned county champions completing a 100% record in the process. In addition the U15 and U16 netball teams remain unbeaten and on course to receive the county league titles once again.

In addition RSA teams also won partnership competi-tions in Indoor Rowing (team and individual) and Indoor cricket, and is progressing to the School Games Champi-onships in April to represent Blaby and Harborough Schools in 6 competitions.

In terms of sports leadership, a number of successful events took place last term including the Mini Paralympics day, a Year 3/4 TAG Rugby afternoon, 3 basketball tournaments and a uni hoc tournament. 2 students were also selected to join Leicestershire's ELITE sports leadership acade-my and our entry for national leadership academy of the year was completed!

HOUSE RESULTS

House fixtures have continued throughout the term with the current standings as follows:

1. Wartnaby 420

LOCK IN 2015

On February 12th—13th over 150 students attended the 8th annual “Lock in” event. The theme of this year’s event was the Rugby World Cup with teams designing banners and team names with a rugby theme. Each team was also given a country competing in this year’s World Cup. The winners of this year’s event were “Scrum n Coke”, with “Scrum-believable tekkers” in second and “Maul me May-be” in third. The students were invited to ask questions to special guests (and former RSA students!) Martin Johnson and George Atkins, along with inspirational speaker (and link to the charity for this year) Claire Lomas. Well done to all students and staff whom participated in the event.

SPORTS RESULTS

U15 and U16 Netball

Both the U15 and U16 netball teams have remained unbeaten in the county league throughout the term meaning that they are both closing in on regaining the titles that RSA teams secured last year. Well done to all the students whom have represented both these netball teams and the U18s throughout the season.

U15 Boys Football

The U15 boys have successfully progressed through to the County Cup Quarter Finals after win-ning the Blaby and Harborough section of the Partnership League. A recent 2-0 win over Lutter-worth helped secure their passage.

U16 Boys Football

After a much improved season where the team won the Blaby and Harborough league and re-mained unbeaten throughout unfortunately came to an end when the team lost 2-0 to John Ferneley in the Quarter Final. Well done to the team and thank you to Mr Davies for his efforts.

U18 Boys Football

The U18 boys gave a valiant second half perfor-mance in the county cup final against Groby but after cutting the deficit with a Sam Ashton goal they were unable to find the equaliser meaning the U18s are county cup runners up for the second year in succession.

U16 Girls Football and Futsal

The U16 girls performed extremely well last term, remaining unbeaten in fixtures indoor and out-doors. In Futsal the team were crowned county champions following a comprehensive display where they won every game and conceded only 1 goal throughout the competition. Outdoors Lizzie Stocks has been in fine form, scoring 5 goals in 2 separate games as part of 7-0 and 5-1 wins. The girls have now progressed to the County Cup Quarter Finals.

U15 Boys Rugby

The U15 boys rugby team have performed extremely well this year but unfortunately fell just short in the county cup final. After wins over Leicester Grammar and Ratcliffe College in the Quarter and Semi Finals, RSA faced Lutterworth in the final but a below par performance saw RSA slip to defeat.

U16 Boys Rugby

The U16 boys rugby team secured the county plate title following an excellent season. A quarter final win 8-5 over Bosworth was followed up by a 55-0 demoli-tion of De Lisle. In the final, RSA overcame Groby Col-lege 22-19. Well done to all the team for their efforts and commitment over the two years.

Individual Success

A special mention to Tom Sanderson, a key member of the U16 and U18 teams, who has been accepted into the Tigers Academy next year. Tom has also been representing the Midlands this year, including participating in a week long tournament over Easter —well done Tom on this excellent achievement.

U18 Rugby

The U18 team comfortably beat Welbeck College in the plate quarter finals before scoring over 60 points against Bosworth in the semi final. In the final RSA were up against a strong Lutter-worth side and with the referee outlining it was the last play RSA kept possession of the ball and held their nerve to see Ciaran McMillan-O’Brien crash over to level the scores and ensure that both teams shared the trophy with the score at 8-8. Girls U15 Rugby

Over 45 year 10 girls have been receiving free coaching sessions from Leicester Tigers coaches as part of a new initiative. The sessions then cul-minated in a touch rugby event at Welford Road where RSA sent three teams. Well done to all the girls for their enthusiasm and endeavour

Individual Success

Well done to Georgina Watson and Tabitha Copson who have been have been selected for the Midlands this year. A fantastic achievement.

U15 Indoor Cricket

The U15 indoor cricket team were successful in the Blaby and Harborough competition enabling them to progress to the county competition. Unfortunately though after win-ning their first game RSA fell short against eventual win-ners Babington.

Cross Country

Well done to all the students who have represented RSA this season. Isaac Akers and Martha Clapp were selected to represent Leicester-shire at English Schools with Isaac going on to represent England and win the SIAB international event in Dublin, an outstanding achieve-ment—well done Isaac on this fantastic achievement!

Indoor Rowing

The Year 10/11 Mixed indoor rowing team comfortably beat all oppo-sition in the partnership finals and now progress to compete at Loughborough University. Henry Povoas and Georgina Watson won the individual titles despite only being in Year 10 and the boys (Henry, Will Hallam, Harry Wells, Tom Sanderson) and girls (Georgina, Charlotte Sykes, Hannah Cufflin and Tilly Johnson) took the team titles.

Robert Smyth Academy Sports Leadership Academy

The Spring term saw RSA students lead and support a number of events and activities. RSA host-ed a Mini Paralympics day for 10 schools where primary school students played boccia, goalball, sitting volleyball, table cricket and polybat. RSA leaders from all four year groups and award schemes led the activities throughout the day.

In March RSA Rugby Ambassadors, Sports Ambassadors and Qualified TAG Rugby leaders led a TAG rugby event for Year 3/4 children from 12 different schools. The schools played some fun rugby drills before playing competitive games against other schools. 20 Year 10 sports leaders have recently been trained to officiate TAG Rugby meaning that we now have over 40 qualified officials.

Throughout the term sports ambassadors and rugby ambassadors have been leading primary school assemblies promoting the rugby world cup and participation in sport.

In addition to the above events RSA hosted two local basketball tournaments and the partner-ship finals for Year 5 and 6. RSA students also led a uni hoc tournament and supported the small schools’ gala. In addition a group of students visited Church Langton Primary school and led a Easter Egg Hunt for the Year 1 pupils.

Student led competitions

As part of the leadership awards students are undertaking at RSA all leaders are involved in lead-ing or supporting competitions. So far this term we have seen activities including “RSA quid-ditch” “Inter-staff volleyball”, Year 10 indoor football, Year 11 Indoor Cricket and Year 10 core PE Handball, Volleyball, Sitting Volleyball, “Rugball” and “Roundball”. In addition some Year 13 lead-ers ran a Uni hoc tournament for Church Langton Year 5. Well done to all the students involved in these events. Next term events include inter house rounders, the “Sixth form Grand National” and “we’re going on a bear hunt”.

There are also a number of local school sports days that RSA students are supporting as well as other events such as the annual Kwik cricket tournament at Kibworth CC.

Rugby Ambassadors

In the last issue it was highlighted that rugby ambassador Abi York was attending a conference at Twickenham. Abi was selected as one of only 4 ambassadors nationally to attend to discuss the rugby world cup and trophy tour, and the ambassador programme, along-side the Rugby Youth Council.

Elite Sports Leadership Academy

Well done to Jonny Nicholson (Year 12) and Lily Mills (Year 10) who have been selected to join the Leicestershire ELITE sports leadership academy where they will work with students from across Leicestershire.

Current ELITE academy member Elli Randon has been chosen as the only sports leader from across Leicestershire to speak at a sports dinner at County Hall alongside Baroness Sue Campbell. Well done to Elli for being selected!

Summer Sports Clubs

In addition to finishing off the U15 boys and U16 girls football season the summer term will see RSA entering a number of competitions in a variety of sports.

RSA will be running Year 10 teams in Athletics, Rounders, Tennis, Cricket and Softball. If you are interested in participating in these teams please ensure you look out for further information re-garding trials and practices.

We are also attending the school games spring championships and taking part in the indoor row-ing, boys and girls volleyball, dodgeball, wheelchair basketball and boccia. Good luck to all our participants!!
