Rugby

First XV

On Saturday, the First XV squad was split into two teams to play a trial game.

It was good to see the young and upcoming boys display their skills alongside

the more experienced players. Fitness and the quality of the rugby was

awesome, particularly for the first game.

It was great to see the boys playing after such a long period. The squad will

be narrowed down for the Palmerston North Boys’ High game on Saturday. It

was great to see everybody out from the Rathkeale community supporting

the boys and enjoying the post-match BBQ! See you out there!

First XI

The First XI played a preseason game away at HIBS on Saturday. Although

losing the game 3-1 Mr Lindsay was very happy with the performance. Young

year 10 Liam Gale made his starting debut and impressed from the start

never shying away from a challenge and showing great composure on the

ball. Wills Vincent and Alexander Hill also made their debuts while Jonty

Roubos demonstrated his prowess in front of goal, netting twice.

Development

The Development side played some good football at times, however

struggled to complete with the sheer physicality of WaiCol. Ben Lake made

several good saves, Charlie Mathews had some strong runs and was

unfortunate not to score. Sam Jonas enjoyed a good debut while Samson

Jensen Middleton impressed both in defence and midfield. There were

plenty of positives to build on moving forward.

Rathkeale Junior Derby

The Rathkeale Junior derby kicked off our football season. Both teams

played well in a goal studied match which saw Rathkeale Junior White

emerged victorious 6-4. Michael Chapman’s work rate was impressive for the

Whites and the goal of the game came curtesy of Freddy Cohr; a fabulous

header from a pinpoint Sam Leask cross.

Badminton

The first round of competitive badminton took place on Wednesday 3rd June.

The boys split themselves into pairs and a round robin event took place.

There were 6 teams, and each played 4 games of 10-minute duration. The

final saw the two unbeaten teams – Henry Lo and Ben Liu, Sam Leask, and

Harvey Masters – battle out for the honours, with Henry and Ben winning a

match worthy of a final 20-17.

Week two of competition saw twelve players grace the courts, some new

players and many regulars.

The boys played doubles matches again this week with a full 5 match round

robin competition being completed.

There were some very close matches (and some one-sided ones!) with one

team going through unbeaten.

1st: Gavin Tse/Pound Leelapatchara (5 wins)

2nd: Puwit Sila/Ben Liu (4 wins)

3rd: Thomas Farman/Harvey Masters (3 wins)

Trap Shooting

Sixteen boys headed to the Wairarapa Gun Club for practice last week. It was

wonderful to see them in action, particularly the exceptional leadership skills

shown by Henry Borthwick. Great to see our numbers growing in this sport.

The boys had good start to the competitive season with some new shooters

stepping up for their first time behind the trap house.

Congratulations to Eddie Harris won the points score and Henry Borthwick

who was third in the single rise.

Practice continues Wednesday 17th and 24th with a trip to Patangata on

Sunday 28th for the second round of competition.

The overall standings after Week Three

Hillary 100 Points Halberg 84 Points

Blake 77 Points

Hillary top the Football competition with a significant lead; however, the

other events are all extremely tight:

Hillary are only 1 point in front of Blake in the Touch Competition; Halberg

and Hillary are tied in Volleyball; Halberg lead in the Basketball, 3 points

ahead of Blake and Halberg also lead the Ki-o-rahi, ahead of Hillary by 3

points!

When you remember that 3 points are awarded for a win … a potential 6

point swing – you can see just how close the competition really is!

As the saying goes … there is everything to play for… and every point counts!

Interestingly after three weeks of competition, Blake have won 10 events,

with 4 overall wins; Halberg have the least number of event wins with 9, but

the most overall wins – 7! Hillary are the most consistent House with 13

event wins and 6 overall wins.

Michael Buick on the ball Ki-o-rahi is proving a real favourite!
