Board of Directors

Mike Schoedel

President’s Letter

Greetings Clayton Chamber of Commerce Members,On behalf of our talented staff and motivated Board of Direc-tors, I hope you are enjoying Fall and are having a great busi-ness year.

Congrats to our Parties in the Park team as they just completed one of the best seasons we’ve had in more than 10 years. We want to thank Laura McCarthy-Jarman for her leadership of the Committee, Brad Beracha for providing the furniture, the City of Clayton for managing the street closure and our many sponsors for their support. This was truly a team effort!

Welcome to those new businesses in the area or to those businesses who may have relocated to another quality Clayton location. Special greetings to The Gathering, Insight Title and Savile Row for joining our community. Congrats to CBRE for staying in Clayton with their recent office move and to SSM St. Mary’s for continuing to expand and update their quality facilities.

Thank you to Brown Shoe, Huntleigh McGehee, Charter Business, Centene Corp., University College at Washington University, Pulaski Bank and SSM St. Mary’s Health Center for your continued sponsorship of many of our quality events. We say it all the time, but our success is directly related to the wonderful support we get from our members.

The Chamber is working with the City of Clayton to help identify opportunities for increasing economic activity in the area. The Chamber Board of Directors recently expressed our concerns to the City about potential future property tax rate and fee increases. A group of Chamber representatives met with the City to discuss ideas for improved communication and partnerships. Both the City and Chamber recognize that we need to work together more closely to find ways to strengthen the commercial activity in Clayton. Please contact us if you have an idea or question about this effort. We have been so fortunate to be able to partner with such quality governmental organizations like the City of Clayton, the School District of Clayton and St. Louis County.

We were thrilled to recently host another high-profile political debate. For the second time in just a few years, the Chamber was chosen as the entity to coordinate a key debate between the candidates running for U.S. Senate in Missouri. Many thanks to Joan Berkman for her tireless efforts in managing this opportunity and to Husch Blackwell for its sponsorship.

We continue to be amazed by the dizzying number of events and activities that our staff coordinates. Thank you Ellen, Mary-Ellen, Trish and Mary.

If you have any ideas or comments about our programs or our efforts in advocating for business-friendly government activities, please contact us. Continued success to all our members as we finish out the final quarter of 2012!

News From Our Members

We all know what a great place Clayton is. Each of us was drawn to Clayton for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the bustling business community. While we enjoy walking to the charming shops and restaurants that make up our five vibrant retails districts, proximity to residential neighborhoods and the robust daytime population is one of the reasons many business owners decided on Clayton locations.

Most of these businesses are independently owned; many are long-standing members of our business community. Besides stiff competition, we understand that they continue to feel the fallout of the recession and need our support. Not only will our support help them prosper, it will maintain the ambiance and aesthetics of the neighborhood and downtown retail districts and the appealing environment we all enjoy.

You can help maintain the elements of this community that ultimately brought us here. Please join me in supporting Clayton’s retail businesses and restaurants.

Clayton’s retail business owners and restaurateurs understand the importance of building relationships with us, their patrons. Through these relationships, they help establish the strong bonds that unite this community.

The only thing hotter than the summer temperatures was the 2012 season of Parties in the Park. Clayton restaurants prospered from the added business as Parties kept the business crowd in town after hours and drew people from all over the metro-area. It was a season of outstanding bands, a visit from a Clydesdale, a Secret Style Team from Town & Style and live artist from the St. Louis Artists’ Guild at each party, plus a performance by the 2012 Clayton Idol.
