After such a successful 2010 Regional
Conference, hosted by the Purdue Uni-
versity Chapter, we at Ohio University
have our work cut out for us for 2011.
Although the events and activities associ-
ated with the conference are still tenta-
tive, plans include: student networking
activities; a trip to a manufacturing facil-
ity; inspirational and informal guest
speakers; school competitions, as well as
a technical paper competition; a potential
job fair; and more.
With a few new buildings to showcase, as
well as, the atmosphere that surrounds
Athens, OH, we simply hope that the rest
of the schools throughout the Great Lakes
Region are as excited as we are to join us
here at Ohio University for the 2011 I.I.E
Regional Conference.
Sincerely,
Anthony Sweetnich

The Greater Detroit Chapter of IIE kicked
off the 2010 year with the ―Local Techni-
cal Paper Competition‖. Students from
universities around Metro-Detroit submit-
ted technical papers discussing pro-
jects in healthcare workflow analysis and
wind turbine cost optimization. Recently,
the chapter hosted a presentation session
by process improvement leader, Khaled
Mabrouk. In attendance were both aca-
demic leaders and industry experts to learn
about how to wisely choose their next
improvement path. The chapter has al-
ready begun planning the ―8th Annual
Lean Six Sigma Symposium‖ to be hosted
at Crittenton Hospital Medical Center on
Friday, November 12th. This annual event
attracts over 100 professionals that gather
to share innovative ideas and learn about
applications of Lean, Six Sigma and Per-
formance Improvement. The chapter will
be collaborating with Society of Health
Systems and local universities to provide
participants with tracks that appeal to dif-
ferent industries. To read more about up-
coming programs and our award-winning

This past year both sections were very active.
Kettering B-Section took a tour of the Michigan
Brewing Company in the Fall, and A-Section
took a tour of the same facility early this year.
Both sections, including faculty, staff, and
alumni, had a great time on the tours. Jeff Golden and Yvonne Madrid, accompanied
Professor Terri Lynch-Caris to the Regional
Conference at Purdue University in February to
―Discover the PossibilitIEs‖. This was the first
regional conference where the Kettering chapter
has participated. They hope to make it to Ohio
University next year to the regional conference.
They also received a visit from their friends at the
University of Windsor with an invitation to their
IIE regional conference.

The Ohio State University chapter of IIE is
very involved around campus this year.
This spring they are competing in intramu-
ral softball and sand volleyball. Last year
they were the champion team in softball,
and hope to continue to make names for
themselves in both sports.
Every Sunday the group participates in the
Campus Clean-Up where volunteers help
clean up the trash on and around 5 blocks of
the OSU off-campus residential area. The
second IIE meeting of the quarter is May
6th where General Mills will be doing a
presentation.
The group plans to send 16 students to Cancún
for the Annual Conference this year. They are
very excited and looking forward to having
double the attendance from last years confer-
ence. A tour to Honda is also on their upcom-
ing list of events.

tour and social gathering.
Awards and Recognition OSU’s Arena Simulation Competition team deserves
congratulations. The team was comprised of IIE mem-
bers Johnny Carmona, Jake Miller, and Josephine
Jing. Last year they made it to the top five teams at
Annual Conference and competed in Miami, FL. Un-
fortunately, this year they did not make the top three
spots for a chance to compete in Cancún. However,
they put in a lot of hard work in and spent many hours
in the computer lab making sure their best work was
represented.

Ohio University has big upcoming plans for
the rest of this school year. The group will
be hosting their annual ISE Spring Banquet
where they provide cocktails and dinner to
ISE students, faculty, staff, and alumni with
entertainment from a guest speaker. During
the banquet they will also say farewell to
the graduating students and congratulate the
newly inducted IIE officers.
Later this spring the IIE group plans to
help out with the University’s annual Re-
lay For Life by raising money and partici-
pating in the big event. Also before the
end of the year they will be holding a IIE
student and faculty social to connect new
students with faculty and gain member-
ship. To help raise funds for the group
they will be designing IE t-shirts and then
selling them to other students throughout
the school.

Fellow Industrial Engineers,
Purdue Institute of Industrial Engineers is so more than your average club. Not only do we help develop our members profes-
sionally, we organize charity events, play intramural sports, and much more. The regional conference at Purdue this semester was a
great example of the creativity and talent of our members. The conference committee definitely set the bar high for future schools and
they did a fantastic job planning the weekend. The Crowe case study earlier this semester was also a great example of the work ethic of
our members and I appreciate every group’s hard work. The faculty luncheon was a success, and I hope that we can continue to in-
crease our relationship with the faculty in the future. I can’t believe the semester is over halfway over, yet we still have so much to look
forward to. I hope to see you all at the senior banquet and the charity flag football tournament, and let’s all cheer for our grand prix
team to win the race this year!
I believe IIE does a fantastic job fostering an atmosphere of teamwork and preparing our members for the opportunities and
challenges that they will meet in the future. I can’t stress enough that you get out of it what you put into it, so everyone, please keep up
the hard work for the rest of the semester. I am honored to have the opportunity to work with some of the brightest students and best
leaders that Purdue industrial engineering has to offer, and I look forward to the rest of 2010.
Thank you,
Stephanie Mathis

The University of Michigan has had a
great past year. As always, they provided
several activities for their Industrial and
Operations Engineering students to be
involved in.
Their past events this year have included
the IOE Barbeque this Spring, Tech Day,
and IOE Bowling Night.
The group has similar plans for events and
activities this Fall, including The Welcome
IOE Barbeque, University of Michigan
Tech Day, IOE Meet and Greet, and the
IOE Bowling Night.
These activities give a chance
for the Faculty and Students
to have out-of-classroom
social time, which promotes
membership and friendship
within the group.
On May 13th there will be a

During this past year, Wayne State's IIE
has served as a model student organization.
They organized events such as the College
of Engineering's Second Annual Movie
Night, Holiday Goods Drive, and the Engi-
neers' Mardi Gras Party. IIE has provided
students with events and resources such as
study nights, tutoring sessions, mock inter-
views and career workshops, social events
and most importantly a sense of affiliation.
In February of 2010, Wayne State’s IIE
chapter traveled to Purdue University for
the Great Lakes Regional Conference with
25+ undergraduate and graduate students.
The conference was not only used as a tool
to enlighten and exposure their students to
a professional conference experience, but
also serve as tool to generate interest in not
only the Department of Industrial Engi-
neering, but in Wayne State's IIE organiza-
tion. At the Great Lakes Regional Confer-
ence, Wayne State’s IIE chapter was hon-
ored as the 2010 Great Lakes Region Con-
ference Champs for their participation and
performance at the conference. Congratu-
lations.
