Tournament Report
Canbury Senior Netball Tournament 2010 This year we were blessed with good weather for netball. Unfortunately only 2 other schools took up the invitation to play in the tournament. However the competition was still fierce and lots of goals were scored. To make it a challenge all teams played each other twice and they also had to play several games back to back. This was quite a test for their fitness and highlighted the quality of netball skills.
Canbury Sports reports Spring 2010
38
Tournament Report
Each game was 15 mins, and Canbury were drawn to play the first two games back-to-back. Our first opponents were Hampton Court House. Their girls were well drilled and their two shooters were hungry for the ball and they proved to be very accurate with their shooting. With only a 2min break we had to face a second ‘fresh’ team from Thames Christian College. Similarly their GA and GS had a very high % of shots on target. Their team was very athletic and their training session with us earlier in the term was paying off as they had improved their understanding of the more advanced rules of the game.
Canbury Sports reports Spring 2010
39
Tournament Report
The Canbury squad was made up of girls from Yr 7 through to Yr 11. This was our main disadvantage as we do not train together. Never-the-less, everybody worked hard and we maintained possession of the ball well in the central part of the court. Our weakness was passing the ball in the shooting circle to get a more advantageous position to shoot from. This meant that the girls had to shoot from a long distance and their conversion rate fell. The speed of the opposition attack soon began to show as our defence in the circle depleted allowing the occasional free shot on goal.
Canbury Sports reports Spring 2010
40
Despite our lack of goals and the success rate of the opposition, this did not have a defeating effect on our girls. They kept their heads up and in the ‘return’ matches we fought hard, showing greater netball skill and being more energy efficient with their movement around the court. This paid off and reduced the final score margins. With more girls in the lower half of the school, our squad should grow again next year.. The final positioning of the three teams was a reflection of the accuracy of the shooters. All teams played very well and the atmosphere throughout the competition was very positive.

This term, won 1 lost 2…We would have liked to have played more – same story – not many other small schools seem to want to play matches – we miss Stowford College, but are pleased to have played HSW again.

Senior matches –
Yr 11 v TCC (A) lost 16-21A game that was for the taking but Canbury seemed unable to convert possession into points.Sen v HSW B (A) won 28-10Finally Canbury managed to hit the baskets – only a couple of days after the TCC defeat, it would seem that our Seniors finally got a feel for the rigid Sports Hall backboards.
Player of the season: Dylan L
Canbury Sports reports Spring 2010
45
Jun v Rokeby (H) lost 14-16Less close than the final score suggests, as Canbury failed to score points – again plenty of chances but an excellent and talented Rokeby team proved to be too much of a handful. In the end a late run of points from Kiya (who scored all but 12 of the Canbury total) but in the end this proved not to quite be good enough.

Table Tennis
This year has seen a considerable rise in the standard of table-tennis at Canbury. As well as the annual fixture against Rokeby, won for the second year in succession, there have been several matches played against other schools. These schools have been considerably larger than ours and have a history of playing table-tennis at county and national levels.
Canbury Sports reports Spring 2010

Table Tennis
We have played Wilsons Grammar School twice, once in the Surrey Cup and once as a friendly. We lost the first match 6 sets to 2 and the second one played on the 24th March by just 11 – 9, with the last doubles pair having a match point which would have squared the match 10 all.We had a very similar game against Hampton School losing the match 6 – 4 with the final doubles lost 16-14 in the fifth game.We obviously need to develop a killer instinct, when we have the opportunity to win a match, and stop being so gracious to our opponents.
Canbury Sports reports Spring 2010

Table Tennis
We also played Ernest Bevin school in Tooting earlier in the year. Although we lost 8 –0, this is a school with a full time professional coach who have just reached the final three for the Finals of the English Schools Team Competition.Although these schools do not usually put out their strongest teams against us, the matches have provided ideal experience for us.

Table Tennis
James E, Turkay, Angus and Pouya have played regularly. James in particular has proved to be a really useful player, winning most of his recent matches, often ably assisted by Angus or Turkay in the doubles. Pouya has had an unlucky streak , losing several matches in extra points in the fifth game, but shows a determination which is bound to bring success in the long run. Dylan L, Will B, Mazigh and Kamiar also played in the recent match against Wilsons with Dylan succeeding in winning all his matches, as did James. It has also been good to see the interest in year 9 from Christo, Dong Ju and Robert P as well as Mazigh. Hopefully they will successfully replace the year 11 players next year.
Many thanks to Mr Williams for this report – and for his hard work organising the matches this winter. NB. Senior Inter House Tournament yet to be finished.

Yr 11 match v TCC (A) lostWe took a Year 11 team to play against an option group at Battersea – our lack of practise showed, but the majority came away thinking they ought to give badminton a chance. We also took the Juniors to Roehampton Leisure Centre at the end of the term – and will make more timefor badminton next winter.

SwimmingOnce again the high point of the Canbury Swimming calendar was
the Inter House Gala – full details on next page. In the past we have managed to swim against Hampton Court House, and The
Moat School – there is still a possibility that we might swim as part of a Sports Weekend with Moor House School, Oxted in the
summer. The Gala was dominated by newcomer Alice F, an outstanding club
swimmer – who despite having been unable to get to the pool for quite some time, rewrote most of the records

SwimmingDylan M in the 25m freestyle was the only individual who stopped Alice from taking a clean sweep of all the events
– something that hasn’t happened for a while. The one swimmer who dominated this Gala in the past was
Daniela Milroy who was unbeaten in every race for all 3 years 2001-2-3… although James Etchelles was until Alice
the strongest swimmer of the past decade at Canbury.

New Records then for Alice in 50m free style and 50m backstroke, and a new best by the Noble relay team.
Using the ASA School’s Speed Swim Awards as a guide – it was good to see quite a few swimmers achieve Gold,
Silver or Bronze for their hard work during the course of the winter. Mentions to Robert P and Simon A who gained Gold in 25m freestyle – joining Alice and Dylan of course.

ISA West MeetMost encouraging was the size of the team that we took to Sherfield School – I certainly hope we can fill a minibus again next year. The standard of runners at the meeting is very high but I think it is important that Canbury runners are exposed to such quality.

Junior Girls race won for Noble House by Yasmeen – who was also 5th Canbury runner home.

Inter House winners - Campbell
Despite having so many well placed runners at the front of the races – it was Campbell – by a very narrow margin who won the Inter-House Competition – proving that it is important to get as many runners as you can to finish.
