1 BEST HOME FROM HOMEFor its prime location, The

Knightsbridge Hotel is unbeatable.

However, its real charm lies in its

rooms and suites, where owner and

interior designer Kit Kemp has created

a beautiful balance between luxury

and domesticity via a careful selection

of furnishings and fabrics. Service will

provide for your every need – or, if

you prefer, be altogether invisible.

a thoroughfare for horse riders for

centuries. Follow in their hoof-steps

with the help of Hyde Park Stables,

which offers individual and group

lessons as well as intensive courses.

Lessons take place either in an outdoor

arena or in Hyde Park itself, so you can

trot alongside the Serpentine or take

in the sights. The stables cater for

riders of all abilities, from the

4 BEST FINE ARTTucked away among the boutiques of

Walton Street is this quiet, estimable

showcase of modern art. Open for just

a few years, the Stephanie Hoppen

Gallery has established itself as a place

for those with an eye for the latest and

most exciting work by artists from all

over the world. Hoppen, who is also

an interior designer, has created a

welcoming space; her philosophy is that

buying a work of art should be a “love

WHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD DO YOU FEEL AT HOME?There are two other places where

I feel at home. As well as our house

in the country, we have a home

in Scotland – and that’s where

my heart is. I also love a place in

Colorado where we had a house.

When we lived there, we went skiing

in the mountains. I’m completely

outdoorsy and my husband is a

professional tennis player, so he’s

very sporty too. I shouldn’t be in

the city at all, really – I should be

in the country.

WHY I LOVE KNIGHTSBRIDGEHomewares designer Katharine Pooley loves to travel, but she also relishes the sense of community, the diversity and the hidden gems that can be found in this exclusive area of London By Amy Broomfield / Photographer Derrick Santini

WHAT’S YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY OF THE AREA?1ZWVQKITTaUaÅZ[\RWJ_I[_Q\P

Harrods one Christmas. I must have

been about 18 – so, quite young – and

it was intimidating. It’s a huge shop,

and some people had been there

for years, so I was the newest member

of staff. But I loved it. It was one of

\PMJM[\RWJ[1¼̂ MM^MZPIL

WHAT IS IT ABOUT LONDON THAT INSPIRES YOU? I know I’m British, but I believe that

4WVLWVQ[\PMÅVM[\KQ\aQV\PM_WZTL

With all the time she

spends travelling the

world in search of

inspiration for her

designs, it’s easy to be envious of

Katharine Pooley’s adventurous

lifestyle. Her homewares are typically

eclectic, with materials and patterns

inspired by Africa, the Middle East and

)[QI*]\_PMV[PM¼[VW\RM\[M\\QVO[PM

domestic life with her husband, two

kids and four dogs in her Knightsbridge

mews home. And, although the area

is perhaps best known for Harrods

and the homes of the rich and

famous, Pooley says that, with its

UIVaNIUQTaZ]VJ][QVM[[M[IVL

ZMO]TIZVMQOPJW]ZTaUMM\]X[

Knightsbridge still manages to

maintain a community feel.

DO YOU LIVE HERE ALL YEAR ROUND?Yes and no. Yes, in that our lives

are consistent because the kids

go to school in London. No,

because I travel a lot for work.

I’m probably away three days

out of every month.

Page 15: Spring 2013 Editing

It has a lot to offer: history; culture;

parks – we have lots of hidden parks

– and most of the museums are free.

It’s also a cosmopolitan city, and easy

to get around with the Underground

and buses, although I like to walk or

use the Boris bikes.

WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU GET HOME FROM WORK? My life is full on, with two kids to take

care of. Bath time, dinner time, story

time. My life doesn’t stop until they

have gone to bed at 8 o’clock. I don’t

watch a lot of television, so I try to

sit and read to switch off.

WHERE DO YOU GO TO ESCAPE THE CROWDS?I have four dogs, so I head to

Hyde Park. Richmond Park is

incredible too. We’re also members

of Cadogan Gardens, which are

really beautiful.

WHY IS KNIGHTSBRIDGE SO SPECIAL?To me, Knightsbridge is a village;

it’s still safe, and has a sense of

community – well, certainly on my

street. They all know us at Jago’s, the

TWKITJ]\KPMZIVLI\\PMÅ[PUWVOMZ

too. I like being a regular. Many of

the local restaurants are family-run, so

we tend to go back to them. I love the

area’s diversity, too.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL GALLERY/MUSEUM?That’s a hard one, because my son

dictates that. The National Army

Museum is great; we go there a lot.

The Science Museum is incredible,

and so is the V&A.

WHAT ARE THE AREA’S HIDDEN GEMS?The Grenadier on Wilton Row.

It’s tiny – one of the oldest pubs in

England – and a real hidden treasure.

Gardens like Cadogan and St Luke’s

are great too. The area also has some

of the best old sweet shops. And

everybody in Knightsbridge knows the

Pie Man; plus there’s Jak’s Café, which

has some of the best salads and juices.

the evening’s cultural event.

5 BEST TEMPLE OF SCIENCEThere’s no hint from the outside, but

21 Albemarle Street is where the

modern world was shaped; it was here

that, in the 19th century, the English

scientist and inventor Michael

career that ultimately led to the

electrical devices we use today. The

Royal Institution is renowned for its

annual Christmas lectures given by

science’s great names; its Faraday

London. I’m often in Warsaw [where

in the South of France. But wherever

I am, I call it home; I just need my

time here about eight years ago. I fell

city – very open and international.

It creates a special, warm atmosphere.

WHY I LOVE MAYFAIR?Q\PPMZ_WUMV[_MIZKWTTMK\QWV[JI[MLWVIZ\IVLIZKPQ\MK\]ZMLM[QOVMZ2WIVVI8ZbM\ISQM_QKbÅVL[QV[XQZI\QWV QV\PMIZMI¼[OITTMZQM[U][M]U[[WXPQ[\QKI\MLZM[\I]ZIV\[IVL[PWX[By Laura Jordan / Photographer Derrick Santini

London is an energetic city, but in a

completely different way to New York,

which can be tiring. There’s a special

crowd in London.

WHY DO YOU LOVE MAYFAIR?This is the heart of London. Mayfair

is alive culturally, because everything

is here: art galleries, restaurants,

shopping. Most chic London life is

based in Mayfair now.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANTS IN MAYFAIR? I like going to Cecconi’s for lunch –

Any jet-setters worth their

monogrammed Louis

Vuitton luggage know

that when it comes to

glamorous London locales, Mayfair is

hard to beat. After all, the area plays

host to world-class galleries and

Michelin-starred restaurants, intimate

private members’ clubs and luxury

hotels, and is bordered by some of

the capital’s grandest green spaces.

It’s no wonder the glitterati choose

to work and play in Mayfair. Joining

that group of W1 devotees is Polish

designer Joanna Przetakiewicz. As the

founder of La Mania – the

womenswear label that is causing

a stir with its architectural

LZM[[M[_Q\PINMUQVQVMÆW]ZQ[P

– Przetakiewicz is no stranger to

sophisticated style. What else

would you expect from someone

who counts Karl Lagerfeld as a

friend and mentor? Here, she

explains why she has adopted

Mayfair as her London home.

WHERE IS HOME FOR YOU?I’m based in St Moritz, but I

spend around 60 days a year in

it’s always buzzing there – and to

Harry’s Bar at night. And I also love

the Arts Club in Dover Street – I’m

addicted. The Connaught Hotel is

very popular for tea, too, and I love

their hot toddy.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE GALLERIES IN MAYFAIR?The Royal Academy of Arts and

White Cube are my favourites.

I base my collections very much

on art and architecture; I love the

work of Zaha Hadid, Anish Kapoor

and Jeff Koons.

WHICH LONDON HOTELS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND?Brown’s Hotel or the Berkeley.

WHAT’S THE BEST-KEPT SECRET IN MAYFAIR?1TW^M5W]V\;\ZMM\<PMÅZ[\

place I became familiar with there

was Michael Charalambous’ salon,

Nyumba. All my friends go there,

so it’s a bit of a meeting point for

us. They love Michael, and they visit

his salon at least once a week.

Downstairs there’s a spa where you

can get a facial or a massage.

AS A FASHION DESIGNER, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF LONDON STYLE?Fifteen years ago, London style was

a lot more rock’n’roll. Now it’s much

more chic, thanks to people like Kate

Middleton and Victoria Beckham.

London style is elegant, very feminine.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE BUILDING IN LONDON? The Natural History Museum is my

absolute favourite. And Harrods is

an iconic building too; when I think

of London, a picture of Harrods

Bond Street is the most beautiful street

in London. It’s a 10-minute walk from

my house. We used to walk there at

night to look at all the wonderful

window displays.

THE HIGH LIFEHarrods’ interior-design team The Studio has worked its magic on

By Ann Havisham / Photographer Tom Sullam

Since 2009, The Studio at Harrods has offered a

world-class interior design service. The interior

architects, designers and operations specialists

at The Studio have undertaken a vast range of

projects for a variety of clients. The team’s

speciality is turning the aspirations of each

client brief into a reality, building on ideas

using a range of visual tools and resources

available from Harrods and beyond. The team

recently refurbished a luxury apartment in

Knightsbridge. Sara Cosgrove, Head of The

Studio, reveals the details of the project.

The best thing about buying a show

apartment is that the hard work of

choosing everything is already done.

There is a pristine state-of-the-art fridge,

the multimedia system works in every

room, the curtains have a satisfyingly

silky swish. The worst thing about buying a show

apartment is the big question: what if it’s not furnished

to your taste?

1\¼[M`\ZMUMTaLQNÅK]T\VW\\WTM\ÅZ[\QUXZM[[QWV[OM\

the better of you, especially when it comes to

something as personal as your home. When our clients

arrived for a viewing of what was to become their

home, they fell in love. The area was perfect. The

accommodation size suited their needs and they loved

the fact that it was new. Fortunately, they could see

beyond the interior design, which just didn’t add up to

what they wanted. It wasn’t just that the colour scheme

WZÅ`\]ZM[IVLÅ\\QVO[_MZMVW\_PI\\PMa_W]TLPI^M

chosen – the couple had a young family and some of

\PMTIZOMZXQMKM[_W]TLJMLIVOMZW][NWZTQ\\TMÅVOMZ[

and all-consuming curiosity. For example, there were

particularly large doors on all the wardrobes, and some X

of the fabrics didn’t look like they would react well to

KPQTLZMV¼[[\QKSaÅVOMZ[

We love it when clients present us with a challenge. It’s

really important for us to fully understand their desires

and requirements. Sometimes – if they’re not sure

themselves what they want – we arrive at a creative brief

by a process of eliminating the things they don’t want. It

can be easier that way.

We discovered, for example, that the home would be

used just a few times a year as a London residence, but

that they still wanted it to be comfortable and homely.

The couple felt that the hall was too dark for a young

NIUQTaJ]\I\\PM[IUM\QUM\PMaLMÅVQ\MTa_IV\ML

something glamorous. Their favourite brand is Fendi and

they love sparkle, but they also wanted a streamlined

TWWS_Q\PM^MZa\PQVOÅ\\QVOXMZNMK\TaQV\W\PM[XIKM

Once we had presented our mood boards, the clients

let us get on with it. This is when the real magic begins.

We started with the entrance hall. Originally, the central

structure was timber clad, making everything a bit

gloomy. We removed this and clad it in mirror instead,

both inside and out, so we created the feeling of a

jewellery box.

In the sitting room, the client had suggested a Fendi

TV unit, but it was rather too small for the space. So

our bespoke team took over, and created a unit that

perfectly suited the room, incorporating everything the

clients needed for multimedia entertainment. In the

master bedroom, we included Swarovski crystal strips

around the edges of the doors and along the internal

drawer fronts for a touch of glamour. We even put

crystals on the headboard of the bed. We also

completely redesigned the lighting layout. Lighting is

all-too-often underestimated – it makes such a

difference if it has been carefully thought through.

Additionally, with the children in mind, we installed

blackout blinds so everyone can get to sleep easily.

Were the clients happy? They loved it all. But it’s the

little details that always impress people the most. A big

<>]VQ\\PI\XMZNMK\TaÅ\[\PM[XIKMQ[\PMSQVLWN \PQVO

that’s expected. But a drawer that sparkles when it

opens – that’s the magical bit. HMN

The May Fair, which took place in this leafy area of London for a fortnight every year from 1686

to 1764, gave the neighbourhood its famous name. Today, modern luxury buildings mix with

period properties to contribute to Mayfair’s distinctive character.

Mayfair has always been an exceedingly popular place to live. With a wealth of beautiful

properties, excellent restaurants and boutique shops, its popularity continues to grow, and

residences in the neighbourhood are highly sought after.

The area’s distinctive charm and village atmosphere have been preserved through the

decades, thanks in part to the picturesque greenery of neighbouring Hyde Park and Green Park.
