An Idea Whose Time Has Come! The TELCO campaign for a Community Land Trust (CLT) on the Olympic Legacy Park enters is entering its tenth year. TELCO has come a long way since then, when it was just an idea. On the back of the success at St Clements Hospital, we stand poised to persuade those in power once and for all that 100 of the first 1000 homes to be built should be CLT homes. Leaders across our boroughs have been working hard to make this a reality, ahead of our Spring Assembly this year, where we hope to receive our final answer on the issue. On the night, each of the ‘brick tickets’ that have been distributed within members institutions will be brought up on the stage and used to help build a house, demonstrating our support for the campaign. On the 24th April we will hear on the progress of this campaign from the LLDC. The TELCO Spring Assembly will be taking place on 24th of April, 7pm to 9pm, Stratford Town Hall. On Friday April 5th the East London Community Land Trust (ELCLT) hosted a visit by a delegation from the London Legacy Development Company (LLDC) led by its Chief Executive Officer, Dennis Hone. The site visit was organised as one of a number of agreed meetings between TELCO and the LLDC in the run-up to the Spring Assembly. The delegation were very impressed with the plans for St Clements and came away with a strong understanding of how Land Trusts function. This will form part of their planning for proposed Land Trusts on the Olympic site. Picture above - Dave Smith (Housing Organiser), centre left with Dennis Hone (LLDC CEO), centre right. An Idea Whose Time Has Come! The TELCO campaign for a Community Land Trust (CLT) on the Olympic Legacy

Park enters is entering its tenth year. TELCO has come a long way since then, when it was just an idea. On the

back of the success at St Clements Hospital, we stand poised to persuade those in power once and for all that 100

of the first 1000 homes to be built should be CLT homes.

Leaders across our boroughs have been working hard to make this a reality,

ahead of our Spring Assembly this year, where we hope to receive our final answer on the issue.

On the night, each of the ‘brick tickets’ that have been distributed within members institutions will be brought up

on the stage and used to help build a house, demonstrating our support for the campaign.

On the 24th April we will hear on the

progress of this campaign from the LLDC.

The TELCO Spring Assembly will be

taking place on 24th of April, 7pm to 9pm, Stratford Town Hall.

On Friday April 5th the East London Community Land Trust (ELCLT) hosted a visit by a

TELCO Leaders in Waltham Forest met on Tuesday 28th February, at the site of the former Waltham Oak Pub to run a house meeting and local action around building stronger relationships in the community.

Borough Co –Chairs Cliff D Souza (Our Lady and St George’s) accompanied by parishioner Paul Dowling and Sister Josephine Canny (Holy Family College) met with

Sheikh Ghulam Rabbani (Faizan E Islam) and other worshippers at Faizan E Islam and enjoyed food and fellowship as they shared their vision for East London.

Faizan E Islam bought the Waltham Oak building and applied for planning permission to use the space for a mosque and community centre for all. TELCO leaders were invited to

see the building and share ideas of how the community could benefit from the space. That same day, officers from the council came to view the building and coincidently

TELCO leaders who were on a tour were able to express their support for the application and their commitment to work together.

E13 Learning Community - At the Heart of Change in East London

Over the last 12 months young leaders from the E13 Learning Community joint School Council  have been at the heart of making change in Plaistow.

Through a listening campaign, building relationships with local Councillors, Police and shop-keepers students have made significant changes in their neighbourhood. With the help of

Lyn Brown MP and Councillor Forhad Hussain, students have managed to win a major restructuring of roads around 3 schools to make the area safer.

Students have also been thinking creatively about the use of the Olympic stadium and have initiated a petition which

includes use of the stadium for schools and community groups. Students have also planned a Litter Pick Day with local Councillors. There is no stopping these young leaders!

Alif Academy students CitySafe Action

On Thur sday 14 th March , a t eam o f enthusiastic students

from Alif Academy, Forest Gate took part in a CitySafe action with McDonald’s Head

o f S e c u r i t y, P a u l Donlevy. The action took part in Stratford

Mall which was launched as a CitySafe Zone on June 9th 2012, and is part of a three-month pilot.

Before setting out to talk to shop-keepers and shoppers in the Mall, students confidently answered questions from Paul Donlevy about their involvement in CitySafe, and also met the Store Manager, Amjad.

Alif Academy is an independent Islamic primary school and one of the newest members of TELCO. Students

have been involved in CitySafe walks on Katherine Road and the trip to Stratford showed whats possible for their local area.

Students enjoyed the action and promised to go back to Stratford to hold a training workshop with the Police and shop-keepers.

TELCO leaders and organisers have continued to pursue with energy a range of employment and training

opportunities for its members across some of the key development hotspots in East London.

As an outcome of the Olympic Games

and its Legacy a number of strategic partners who are key to the delivery and development of the Queen

Elizabeth Park have been offering some of the first post-games opportunities to our young people.

Atkins Engineering, responsible for designing the Olympic stadium, has delivered its first successful cohort of

TELCO apprentices during Autumn 2012.

Seven young people joined the new

internship programme for a three month period and have an academic experience of studying technology, engineering and maths at college or

university.

Alongside the work experience TELCO has also helped to deliver

employability seminars to assist the interns with their wider pursuits in the job market.

As a result of this success one of the TELCO interns, Jishan Ahmed, has been offered a position as an Assistant

Telecoms Engineer and will be completing a short period of work in the North of England. Congratulations

Jishan!

Atkins Global will be attending the TELCO Spring Assembly to announce further commitments to working in

partnership.

Job success for TELCO young people

Health is Wealth in Tower HamletsTELCO leaders met with the Director of Human Resources at Barts Trust on Tuesday 12th March to build a relationship with the largest local health employer in Tower Hamlets.

The Barts Trust is a merger of three

hospitals in East London; Royal London, Newham General and Whipps Cross and has plans for expansion of

i t s w o r k f o r c e i n j o b s a n d apprenticeships. They currently employ about 15,000 people.

Nurul Ullah (Darul Ummah; Tower Hamlets); Abdullah Tariq (Darul Ummah ); Bernadette Harris (St

Thomas of Canterbury; Redbridge) Sr Josephine Canny (Holy Family College; Waltham Forest) met with Director Michael Pantl in to discuss the

opportunity for local recruitment similar to the TELCO model used in the Olympics.

Barts Trust was positive regarding the proposals and mentioned that a

strategic aim of the hospital is to contribute to wealth generation in the

area. Research has found that local people who are in work, are likely to be healthier and have better wellbeing

and therefore in the long run need the health services less.

TELCO jobs team is putting a proposal

together on local based recruitment as we too believe health is wealth and would like to hear from our members

who want to be a part of this.

of the jobs team please email: [email protected]
