Dear Friends of Free Spirit:

Spring is always such an uplifting time, especially for Minnesotans like me. It brings more sunny days, warmer weather, melting snow, the very welcome color green—and the release of new titles. This spring we’re pleased to announce 13 new offerings that we’re sure will capture the interest of your customers.

For young children (and their parents and caregivers) we have new additions to our popular Laugh & Learn™, Learning to Get Along®, and Being the Best Me! series. We’re particularly excited about a boy-centric book authored and illustrated by the creators of the Weird series: Nobody! A Story About Overcoming Bullying in Schools. And be sure to check out the board book and paperback editions of Voices Are Not for Yelling, the newest titles in our top-selling Best Behavior® series.

We’re continuing to grow our respected line of resources for administrators, teachers, and counselors, too. Educators will welcome the practical strategies and “from-the-trenches” advice in The Principal’s Survival Guide, Teaching Smarter, and the revised edition of When Gifted Kids Don’t Have All the Answers.

Don’t hesitate to contact us with questions. We look forward to hearing from you.

P.S. For information about how our titles align with Common Core State Standards and other educational standards, visit freespirit.com/standards.

“There is a long list of organizations that will sing the praises of Free Spirit’s work from the American Library Association to Learning magazine. As this niche publisher continues their good work there’s little doubt that the accolades will continue, not only

from the professionals but also more importantly from the kids—their readers.”

We all feel many different emotions every day. For young children, those feelings can be extra strong. And sometimes, children need help finding the words to describe how they’re feeling. This friendly and positive alphabet book gives children those “feeling words,” and explores the idea that while some feelings are more comfortable than others, all are natural and important. F Is for Feelings invites children to share, express, and embrace their emotions—every day! Stand Up to Bullying!by Phyllis Kaufman Goodstein and Elizabeth Verdick

Who has the most power to stop and prevent bullying? Teachers? Parents? The Principal of the Universe? No, no, and no way! When it comes to changing bullying behavior, nobody has more power than upstanders—all the people who see bullying or know it’s happening . . . and decide to do something about it. How strong are upstanders? Stronger than a snarling seventh grader. More powerful than a petty put-down. Able to delete Internet rumors with a single click. When Bystanders choose to act as UPstanders, they are real superheroes!

With full-color cartoons and humorous, kid-friendly text, Stand Up to Bullying! teaches kids how to safely take a stand against bullying, support kids who are targeted, and spread the word that bullying is not cool—it’s cruel. The power to end bullying starts with one person: you.

The Survival Guide for Making and Being Friendsby James J. Crist, Ph.D.

Whether kids find socializing as natural as smiling or as hard as learning a foreign language, this book can help them improve their social skills so they can better enjoy the benefits of friendship. Practical advice covers everything from breaking the ice to developing friendships to overcoming problems. True-to-life vignettes, “what would you do?” scenarios, voluminous examples, quizzes to test learning, “Try This” assignments for practicing techniques, and advice from real kids make this an accessible life-skills handbook.

The Survival Guide for School Successby Ron Shumsky, Psy.D., Susan M. Islascox, M.A., and Rob Bell, M.Ed.

From struggling students to academic all-stars, everyone can do better in school. Research shows that executive functions such as focus and organization are more valuable to school performance than intelligence or talent. Fortunately, these functions are skills, so students can learn them. This book provides ten tools to improve executive functioning, described as “mental apps” that will appeal to digital natives. Featuring plenty of examples, practice assignments, and a playful tone, this book can provide an academic boost to any student.

APP 8Your Mind’s SpeedometerGoing 80 down the highway and 8 down the alley (not vice versa)

School is a marathon, not a 100-yard dash. To run it and win it, you have to pace yourself and go at the right speed. The App for controlling speed is Your Mind’s Speedometer. It lets you match your speed to the road conditions—or in this case to the school conditions.

When work is easy and clear, you speed up and zoom straight ahead. When the going gets tricky and curvy, you go more slowly. In other words, with easy problems you can race right through. But with harder problems, you need to slow down and proceed with caution.

If you don’t use Your Mind’s Speedometer well, you may end up working too quickly or too slowly. Either can lead to a major malfunction.

MAJOR MALFUNCTION: ACCIDENTS

By far the most common problem is speeding—working too quickly. If we drive down a narrow side street at 70 mph (the same speed we drive down an interstate highway), we’ll probably get in an accident or get a speeding ticket.

It’s the same thing with schoolwork. If you try to do 3697 ÷ 261.3 at the same speed as 36 ÷ 2, you’ll probably make careless errors—mistakes you wouldn’t have made if you were working at the right speed.

MAJOR MALFUNCTION: PERFECTIONISM

A slightly less common but still nasty speed problem is perfectionism—working super-slowly in order to avoid mistakes and get everything right. If we drive down the highway at 15 mph (the same speed we drive down a narrow side street), it will take forever to get where we’re going.
