Dear Au Gres-Sims Community,
On Tuesday, August 7, 2018 registered voters re-siding within the boundaries of the Au Gres-Sims School District will vote on an $8.1 million bond pro-posal. Voter approval of the bond proposal will not change the current tax rate. The primary purpose of the bond election is to re-model and upgrade Au Gres-Sims schools and school facilities. The bond proposal on the August 7 ballot was designed to provide funding for a learning envi-ronment that is safe, secure, and up-to-date. The bond proposal was also designed to protect the community’s investment in its schools and to reflect positively on homeowner property values. If approved by voters, projects funded through the bond proposal will affect every Au Gres-Sims student and every building on campus. History tells us that real estate values tend to be higher in communities where school districts that are perceived to offer a quality education program and have modern school
facilities. All Au Gres-Sims bond proposal projects were designed to reflect positively on homeowner property values and the school district’s positive reputation. This comprehensive bond proposal project will provide the necessary reinvestment into our school district’s learning environment and will help ensure we remain a “Destination District” for this generation and the next. For detailed information about the August 7 elec-tion and bond proposal, including basic facts and fre-quently asked questions, please visit our Au Gres-Sims website at: www.ags-schools.org and click on the “School Election Information” tab on the main page. And, please remember to vote on August 7th ,or by absentee ballot between June 23rd and Au-gust 6th . Yours in Education,

AU GRES-SIMS SCHOOL DISTRICT
RECEIVES multiple GRANT awards
Captain Planet Foundation Awards an Environmental Education Grant to
Au Gres-Sims School District
The Captain Planet Foundation, an organization dedicated to
funding educational programs that give students hands-on, pro-
ject-driven learning experiences with real environmental out-
comes, is proud to announce that Au Gres-Sims School District
was recently awarded an Environmental Education Grant in the
amount of $2,500. Au Gres-Sims will use these funds towards
facilitating dynamic fieldwork within the Schoolyard Habitats
pillar of their unique Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Math (STEM) Curriculum Overlay. These studies provide stu-
dents immersive lessons with threatened plant greenhouse propa-
gation and invasive species on Big Charity Island in the Saginaw
Bay.
CPF is a grant-making foundation that has funded over 2,000
hands-on environmental education projects with schools and non-
profits that serve children in all 50 U.S. states and in 25 countries
internationally. More than 1.4 million children have directly par-
ticipated in and benefited from these educational projects. In
addition to its Small Grants Program, the Captain Planet Founda-
tion also operates the following programs: Project Learning Gar-
den, Project Hero, ecoStem kits, the Leadership Center, SAGES,
Planeteer Clubs, and a number of other science education initia-
tives that promote the intersections between technology, innova-
tion, the environment, and personal action. For more informa-

Au Gres-Sims Receives $20,000 Grant Rebate Through the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency’s Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) Funding Program
On February 15, 2018, the Au Gres-Sims School District was
awarded $20,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency’s (EPA) National Clean Diesel Rebate Program under
the applicable 2017 School Bus Replacement and Retrofit Fund-
ing Opportunity. In February, the EPA awarded more than $8.7
million to replace or retrofit 452 older diesel school buses across
the country. The funds were disbursed to 141 school bus fleets in
32 states, each of which received rebates through EPA's Diesel
Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) funding. The new and retro-
fitted buses will reduce pollutants that are linked to health prob-
lems such as asthma and lung damage. EPA has implemented standards to make newer diesel engines
more than 90 percent cleaner, but many older diesel school buses
are still operating. These older diesel engines emit large amounts
of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter,
which are linked to instances of aggravated asthma, lung damage,
and other serious health problems. Since 2008, the DERA pro-
gram has funded more than 700 clean diesel projects across the
country, reducing emissions in more than 70,000 engines.
For more information about EPA's National Clean Diesel cam-
paign and DERA program, visit www.epa.gov/cleandiesel.
Au Gres-Sims School District Receives $5,000 Grant from Lowe’s for an Advanced School Yard Habitat
STEM Greenhouse Program
The Au Gres-Sims School District has received a $5,000
Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant for an advanced School
Yard Habitat STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and
Math) Greenhouse Program.
Lowe’s is thrilled to announce that Au Gres-Sims was awarded
funding for their advanced School Yard Habitat STEM Green-
house Program. The grant application was based on the goal of
increasing environmental stewardship while supporting dynamic
and multi-faceted STEM studies at Au Gres-Sims. In partnership
with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a 60’x40’ cold-storage
greenhouse has been transferred to the Au Gres-Sims campus.
Lowe’s donated monies will help supply water lines and faucets,
ventilators and exhaust fans, planting tools and implements,
trays, pots, and soil. Au Gres-Sims looks forward to sharing the
advanced School Yard Habitat STEM Greenhouse Program with
the greater Au Gres community. This project was worthy of fund-
ing because of the environmental significance it can have now
and far into the future. The addition of a greenhouse on the Au
Gres-Sims School District’s campus will be a benefit to the com-
munity by providing creative 21st century Place-based Education
(PBE) and hands-on learning opportunities for students.
Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network Awards
Au Gres-Sims a Community Action Mini-Grant
Au Gres-Sims School District has received a $1,000 Commu-
nity Action Mini-Grant from the Saginaw Bay Watershed Initia-
tive Network (WIN). The grant, awarded in December as part of
WIN’s 2017 grant program, was collaboratively authored in part-
nership between Au Gres-Sims, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
and Heart of the Lakes.
The WIN Community Action Mini-Grant Program offers fund-
ing opportunities to organizations who are working to make im-
provements in their neighborhoods, communities, and watersheds
within the framework of “sustainability.” This grant helps fund a
joint organizational project that will create an eight to ten minute
film highlighting key components of the unique STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math) Curriculum Overlay and
Place-based Education (PBE) programs established and designed
for sustained experiential education opportunities for students at
Au Gres-Sims School District. A key focus of this project is cap-
turing the dynamic and diverse aspects of STEM programming
that have been embedded into curricular projects at Au Gres-
Sims. These longitudinal studies and partnerships are located on
campus, in riparian zones, and on Big Charity Island, highlight-
ing water quality studies, invasive species, and greenhouse propa-
gation of the threatened and federally protected Pitcher’s Thistle
plant. Big Charity Island, located within the school district’s
boundaries, is part of the Michigan Islands National Wildlife
Refuge.
